Jojo’s Bangkra ‘Sow your

Passion’

At Jojo’s Bangkra we create the most stylish fabric tote bags and accessories for all life’s adventures … so you can ‘Sow your Passion’. The idea for Jojo’s Bangkra was born out of a desire to see more handcrafted fabric bags in the leisure market that incorporated some of the traditional craft methods used in the past. We are passionate about our craft and lovers of ‘fabric bags’. We love weaving and mixing different fabric colours, textures, sewing methods, painting techniques and fashioning them into wearable works of art. Our designs are influenced by the beauty and complexity of the islands as we explore picturesque countryside and comb craggy shorelines cataloging their unique elements to then represent them in our products. We believe in sustainable practices and support the preservation of traditional craft methods handed down through the ages. We are happy to be able to offer such a product to you our fellow ‘fabric bag’ lovers to express your passion. Life offers endless possibilities, ‘Sow your Passion’ whatever it may be and soar! 2

Psychosis of Whiteness:

The Celluloid Hallucinations of Amazing Grace and Belle

T

he final screening of Psychosis of Whiteness was scheduled for May in Leicester. This has been postponed because of COVID-19. Dr. Kehinde Andrews and Dr. Eugene Nulman from Birmingham City University produced this film to support a paper written by Dr. Andrews. In his abstract, he writes, critical Whiteness studies has emerged as an academic discipline that has produced a lot of work and garnered attention in the last two decades. Central to this project is the idea that if the processes of Whiteness can be uncovered, then they can be reasoned with and overcome, through rationale dialogue. This article will argue, however, that Whiteness is a process rooted in the social structure, one that induces a form of psychosis framed by its irrationality, which is beyond any rational engagement. Drawing on a critical discourse analysis of the two only British big budget movies about transatlantic slavery, Amazing Grace and Belle, the article argues that such films serve as the celluloid hallucinations that reinforce the psychosis of Whiteness. The features of this discourse that arose from the analysis included the lack of Black agency, distancing Britain from the horrors of slavery, and downplaying the role of racism. Join us next issue to read the article.

HAIR LOVE

“Animation-A place to tell a story” Karen Rupert Toliver As we celebrated the Black British successes at the recent awards; Cynthia Erivo’s Oscar nomination as Leading Actress, in Harriet and Micheal Ward’s Bafta win as Rising Star, we also join hands to congratulate Matthew A Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver, for winning the Best Animated Short Award at the Oscars for Hair Love. Matthew, a former NFL player, has written a book by the same name, that compliments the film. With the help of Vashti Harrison, a freelance picture-book illustrator, the book encourages people to get involved in animation and the effectiveness of the short film. It is a superb story about a Black father struggling to comb his daughter’s thick, curly hair for the first time. Most Black women can relate the journey they had getting their own hair combed. The grimace as the hair is pulled tightly, or the clip around the head with the comb along with 14

the words, ‘Keep yu head still’. Not to mention the vow... to never put your own daughter through the same torture, oh and the horror when you hear yourself repeating the same words ‘keep yu head still!’. It is timely, as more instances are occurring in the news, on both sides of the Atlantic, of children challenged at school solely on the basis that their hair does not conform to a reality that is not ours. If our varied and wonderful hairstyles were seen on television on a regular basis, it would educate and enlighten those persons who are offended and it would become the norm and our schools could focus on the matter at hand –teaching. The tender message at the end of the short film is a tearjerker.

Reading Between The Lines by David Clarke

A long time ago in a galaxy far away … sound familiar? can be likened to that of ‘sin’. Once you have it, it’s hard to let go. Avengers: Endgame – Thanos attempts to disintegrate the entire universe, leading to the Avengers assembling to restore balance and order. Oh, and there’s the sacrifice of Tony Starks (Iron Man) who saves humanity. Last, but not least, the Disney classic, The Lion King. Born to one day give his people new hope, Simba is guided by the voice of his father speaking to him from the heavens. These are just a fraction of the many great films that are much more than meets the eye. Now this doesn’t mean that I am a movie cynic – I absolutely love movies! Nothing beats a Saturday night with your partner, family or friends (or a combination of all); bowls full of popcorn and munchies and your favourite takeaway. But unlike most, I’m able to explore the stories, messages and deeper meanings that are being played out below the surface. So many people would be surprised to learn that these box office hits are actually based on scriptures in the Bible and have Christian themes. Fortunately, good always wins – well, almost in the movie world - and in the real world, the same narrative is true. So, next time you decide to cosy up and watch one of the above-mentioned movies or your ‘must-see’ film, be on the lookout for the Christian parables and analogies. And remember, don’t watch with your eyes wide shut!

I

t’s a trademark saying that opens the stage on an epic movie and associates itself on the centre stage of Hollywood Boulevard and Disney Studios. It’s the beginning of an end and the end of a beginning. The Alpha and Omega. A time factor in a story consisting of a thousand words. Then there’s the battle between good and evil, gods and kings, villains and superheroes; which again, has an all-too familiar connotation to the ultimate script(ures) of all-time – The Bible. God is always being depicted in some way or another; whether it be on the big screen or in our books and it’s high time people started reading between the lines – literally. Whoever came up with the saying, ‘If you want to hide information from the black man, put it in a book’ also forgot to mention, ‘If you want to hide the truth from the world, put it in a movie.’ Unfortunately, not all of us are film guru discerners and therefore won’t spot a subliminal message even when shown one. However, there’s ‘good news’ … and the good news is that you can find the truth in a lie, but you can’t find a lie in the truth. In other words, with all the lies we see on our big screens, you can discover that these hit movies have hidden Christian themes. For example, Superman – a hero with special abilities who’s sent down to earth by his father to save mankind. Lord of the Rings – the power of the ring and its effect on the beholder

uring crises and great times of change, visionaries thrive. To go forward, the past and the lessons learned need to be considered, the current situation needs to be assessed and then step into the

History is evident that Black people when faced with unimaginable trials, thrive. Some have faith, others the resilience of their ancestors, but all have the capacity to create, or to do, that thing they were told could not be done. It’s the same for Black people and the television industry in the United Kingdom.

Many institutions are going through major changes and British televison is no exception – it’s now going through a period of instability and times are a-changing, and visionaries are sought.

Since 1953 television sets have been inviting the whole world into front rooms. We have been fed an intermittent, but consistent diet of Black television shows that existed solely at the behest and approval of the mainstream broadcasters, now called gatekeepers, who were, and are in many cases today, White.

uncertain future.

One thing is for sure though, the future now looks brighter for Black TV, an industry whose ability to create spectacular programs with limited resources now needs to be demonstrated. There are so many Black people in the UK with the skills to create and produce exceptional television shows. Some handle a camera with such precision, that the concluding shot blows your mind. Then there’s the sound engineer who can replicate the ‘scupt scupt’ sound of Grandma doing laundry in such a way, it floods the mind with memories. And the lighting... in the hands of the right person, the one who sees so much more than just the light and the dark creating atmospheres that draw the very being into the scene.

Much credit must be given to the Black TV, film and media fraternity such as Sir Lenny Henry CBE, Norman Beaton, Carmen Munroe OBE, Sir Steven McQueen CBE, Trix Worrell, Angie Le Mar, Simone Pennant MBE, Leo Pennant, Neil Kenlock, Tony Douglas (Deceased), (West Indian World Newspaper) and TV broadcaster George Pennant (Deceased), to name but a few, whose zeal to make Black media work inspired, and in the face of bitter opposition, excelled.

However, today, in 2020 there are more opportunities for Black people in the television industry but they are still limited. There have been countless academic studies carried out to examine the cause, which all invariably arrive at the same conclusion... barriers of subtle, and sometimes, not so subtle, institutional racism, which exists even in the presence of stringent diversity policies. The truth is that the will to disturb the status quo and relinquish power is not there. Black people are innovative and creative and able to make something out of nothing. The time to use those skills is now. Matthew Griffin, Futurologist, speaks about the effects of disruption, which means destroying old industries by providing popular, cheaper alternatives. Brian Chesky, Co-founder of Airbnb, and the other tech gods in Silicon Valley – e.g. Apple, Google, Tesler, Facebook, Uber, and Twitter are all Disruptors. They continue to create systems that change the world and the lives of millions of people. Griffin maintains that disintermediation (which means cutting out the middleman) is an effective and profitable business model. This is the opportunity to change the face of Black television by disrupting television, as we know it, with strategic disintermediation. The collective skills and unbridled talent will stir up the latent energy, create a myriad of opportunities, unleash shared prosperity, and interconnectivity that Black people have not experienced since the days of Mansa Musa.

Letitia Wright

Nevertheless, steadily, over the years, some actors have broken through and their ability to perform at an outstanding level is not in question, e.g. David Oyelowo OBE in Les Miserables (2018) . Idris Elba OBE, Sophie Okonado CBE/OSCAR nominee, Letitia Wright and Micheal Ward, BAFTA winners, Cynthia Erivo OSCAR nominee for best leading actress in her portrayal of Harriet Tubman, in ‘Harriet’ (2019), and so many more. Producers such as Noel Clarke’s company, Unstoppable Film and Television, is certainly making waves with Bulletproof 2 (2020), where Clarke teams up with Top Boy’s (2011) Ashley Walters and landing its first Channel 5 television commission, so opportunities are starting to appear

The rejection faced by Debra Odutuyo, producer of Meet the Adebanjos (2012), which is now showing on Netflix, spurred her on to do it alone. Likewise, Samuell Benta, actor/producer put his sitcom, All About The McKenzies (2012) on YouTube for a successful three seasons.

Black Panther (2018) Credit: imdb.com

During a very recent panel discussion on “The Future of TV” at The Royal Television Society, a survey showed there was an average of 22 screens in each home. The television and other screens are much more than hardware or devices; they are created for a purpose - these devices and their content subliminally feed our subconscious with values and opinions that are not necessarily our own but those of an imagined community. The time has come to reclaim our values. Drama is one of the most effective mediums to create imagined communities, such as Eastenders and Hollyoaks, where we find ourselves relating to every move these engaging characters make. Or period dramas such as Downton Abbey which engages in a world in which Black people have been excluded but because the format works, it sells around the world, so why change it?

Marvel’s Black Panther written by Joe Robert Cole and Ryan Coogler created a superhero Black kids can look up to and raised the bar for screewriters, everywhere.

On the other hand, the highly acclaimed Top Boy (2011) and the new Noughts and Crosses (2020) keep us rooted in our current reality, no matter how negative that may be, so our language changes, our values shift, we follow fashion, our morals decline, and we forget who we really are, or maybe that’s because the truth has not been outed. Drama, although constructed, is often based on reality, and creative licence allows the truth to be veiled.

The tech moguls of Silicon Valley believe that within 30 years half of humanity will not have a job and will need to be entertained by spending endless hours supporting the gaming industry (which has actually literally occurred now, in April 2020, as a result of the coronavirus). Looking towards this future, the Black television industry has a plethora of stories to draw upon which can be both entertaining and educational. This will also support a Black gaming industry with the intention of keeping the wealth predominately within the Black community. Fortunately, more and more people accept that a change is long overdue and will embrace a collective action. Black people have history and have stories; great, exciting stories that are never told, that remain hidden in plain sight. Without a writer there is no story or show; an idea that would not go away, an idea that nagged at them night after night, until they got it down on paper and brought the characters to life. When the writer shared the idea, the music started to play in the mind of the composer, the music that had laid dormant for so many years, and they all rejoiced because their idea’s time had finally come.

The future of Black television is an exciting prospect and is bubbling over with challenges and opportunities: brave visionaries are now needed to step forward as change makers, disintermediators, and innovators. In the UK, Black churches already have a strong online presence. In the light of this pandemic they raised the bar, immediately putting all services and teaching on livestream. They urged their congregation to abide by Government instructions to stay at home and encouraged them to take special care of their neighbours and the vulnerable. All of them stressed that now is the time for the church to shine.

ising Stars draws in large audiences because the focus of the shows is music. Music always gets the attention of the Jamaican people. Rising Stars is in its 16th season and people still tune in to see ordinary Jamaicans achieve the goal of stardom. It started out as the Jamaican version of American Idol but overtime took on more Jamaican features; back up singers from Ashe, Group acts and campaigning. Today it is the premier talent show in Jamaica. It has produced stars like Christopher Martin, Romaine Virgo and Dalton Harris who later went on to win the X factor 2019. The latest winner Sherlon Campbell has parleyed his win on Rising Stars into a career in gospel music.

n 13 March 2020, the Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, ordered a nation-wide closure of all schools in an effort to combat the spread of Covid-19 - known as the Coronavirus globally. Jamaica recorded its first case of the virus on 10 March. Since the closure of schools - parents, students, teachers and all stakeholders in Jamaica’s education system have been hard at work creating online learning platforms to suit the needs of the country’s students. Television Jamaica has taken the initiative to generate a format that all students can benefit from. The #schoolsnotout initiative started on Thursday, 19 March 2020 and runs for three hours from 09:00 to 12:00, Mondays to Fridays. The programme provides live and recorded teaching covering Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) content.

Gran Gran is proud of her Saint Lucian heritage and teaches JoJo about the Caribbean island’s culture. Gran Gran (voiced by Cathy Tyson) and JoJo (Taiya Samuel) are based on characters created by Laura Henry-Allain, a multi-talented author who drew on the inspiration she gained from her grandmother.

Saint Lucia is just over 238 square miles – 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. The capital city of Saint Lucia is Castries. Laura Henry-Allain Initially named the Island of the Iguanas by early Carib settlers, its name was only changed later on. Its name makes it the first country to be named after a woman. Saint Lucia is the second largest island of the Windward Islands “The Land, The People, The Light” became a motto after Saint Lucia became free from British rule. The Saint Lucia Parrot, or Jacquot, cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and quite fittingly is the island’s national bird. Credit: https://www.thefactsite.com/saint-lucia-facts/

atthew Hypolite the owner, was born on the cusp of Virgo and Libra, in the Spice Island of Grenada during its worst ever hurricane, hence his nickname Stormy. He came to England in his early years and grew up in SW6 Fulham. He is very creative, with a “just do it” can-do attitude. His studies and working life have revolved around the arts, music, property and community development. He discovered Gambia in 2005 and purchased what is now HYPOLINK Village, during his first two weeks on holiday. He was overwhelmed by the beauty of the location. It had been closed for many years and therefore developed wonderful vegetation in a natural manner. The resort was fully developed, designed and built by Matthew, alongside local workers, and a learning experience was had by everyone. They all acquired new skills and working techniques, using new materials and building in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. HYPOLINKs policy has always been to develop and maintain the site’s wonderful tranquillity and environment in order to share this harmonious feeling with others. For Matthew, this has been an epic grand design, a Labour of Love, and a great learning experience in a testing climate - all for which, he is continually giving thanks to the Almighty. Thank you for taking the time to understand.

Redevelopment of existing accommodation to provide three floors. 2. Matthew’s visit to India to study Adobe blocks and building techniques. 3. Design and build of 9 shop units, utilising the side entrance to the beach road. 4. Building of a Dome restaurant, stage, venue and bars. 5. Completion of accommodation to use. 6. Design and build of swim-up bar swimming pool. 7. Staffing, training and opening of all facilities in 2017.

Gambia is just what you need after months of self isolation, quarantine and utter boredom. Well, one thing is certain, this too must pass and when it does please consider The Gambia. Interesting Facts about The Gambia. The Gambia is a very liberal Muslim country. Not only is alcohol widely available, they even brew their own beer, the popular and ubiquitous Julbrew. The national and most popular sport in Gambia is wrestling. Association football and basketball arealso popular. The name “Gambia” is derived from the Mandinka term Kambra/Kambaa, meaning Gambia river. The Gambia is one of only two countries whose self-standing short name for official use should begin with the word “The” (the other one being The Bahamas). 50

In 1964, the prime minister of The Gambia said that one of the reasons they like to have “The” in their name is to avoid confusion with Zambia. In comparative terms, the Gambia has a total area slightly less than that of the island of Jamaica.

ports Arrow’s mission is to showcase Black sportsmen and women from Africa or the Caribbean who are excelling in their field but we won’t see on our British sports channels. We start with the Jamaican Ice Hockey Team who made an impressive showing on their first international match last year. The Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, was quick to congratulate them. He said on Instagram: ‘A nation without ice brings sunlight to the cold’. The Jamaican ice hockey team won the LATAM cup after beating Colombia in overtime 3-2 at the Florida Panthers IceDen stadium in Coral Springs, Florida. This is an amazing achievement for a team that is only seven years old and played their first match in September 2019. They’re now looking to go on to bigger things and hopefully compete in the Olympics. Sports Arrow is following reports that a Canadian investor wants to fund Jamaica’s first ice rink. We will let you know when contracts are signed. Huge congratulations go out to the team, including head coach Cyril Bollers.

Members of the team are Andrew Marshall, Solomon Smith, D’Andre John, Southon Thammachack, Marlon Williams, Christian Nichols, Donovan Tait, Jaiden Lindo, Addison Tkaczyk, Ethan Finlason, Dayne Habbib, Kristoff Malcolm, Quinn CheversWhorms, Teegan Moore, Sean Murphy, Carter Thornton, Kolby Johnson Anson Thornton Sports Arrow hopes Jamaica’s success in ice hockey continues. Hoyantaan: The Making of

the King of Gambia’s Wrestling Arena It’s not difficult to figure out why Abdoulie Ndow alias Hoyantaan chose wrestling over other professions. Wrestling runs in his DNA. His father was a local wrestling champion and his stepfather, Alieu Gaye is still remembered as one of the greatest wrestlers in his home village of Balangharr in the North Bank Region in the 80’s. Though Hoyantaan was inspired by his father and stepfather to pursue wrestling, his family sent him to an auto garage to learn driving because of his hot-headedness as a kid. After acquiring his driving license, he became a commercial vehicle driver. After a while, Hoyantaan left driving and went into bakery. That new adventure lasted just a few months. 58

“I couldn’t stay long at the bakery. The job was slow for me and I always argued with my bosses,” he says.

Young Hoyantaan as a rookie wrestler Hoyantaan had set his eye on wrestling. His uncle, Ndongo Ceesay noticed his love for the sport and decided to guide him to become a professional wrestler. After an intensive training supervised by Ndongo, Hoyantaa triumphed in his first bout as a rookie wrestler. Wrestling fans noticed from that fight that he was a star that was meant to rise.

“I knew he would be a great wrestler,” says Alagie Cham, a wrestling commentator at West Coast Radio. “I’ve covered most of his bouts in the provinces. He’s a technical wrestler.”

the fight and was crowned the King of the Gambian Arena. “That was a great fight for me. Leket was a champion and facing him for the crown demanded special preparations.” Hoyantaan crowned the King of the Arena His manager Ousman Jobe described him as a dedicated and talented wrestler. “Since I started managing him some years ago, he has proven to be a warrior. He is respectful and he’s always hungry for success.” Today, Hoyantaan is not only winning inside the arena, but he’s also winning the financial battle outside the arena. He has become one of the highest paid wrestlers in the history of Gambian wrestling. His last fight earned him a fee of D120,000. He’s also enjoying sponsorship and endorsement deals from private companies. Earlier this year, the 29-year-old was named the best local athlete of the year by the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia. Hoyantaan asserted his superiority in a ten-wrestler competition which he won. In his home village of Balangharr, he struggled his way out as an underdog in a starstudded championship to win the hearts and minds of the villagers.

“He was always the center of attention. Whenever he appeared, he impressed the crowd,” Alagie says. Slowly but steadily, Hoyantaan began attracting more attention and a huge following. Victories over Mboran, Tass Sa-Yaram, Gambien and Yaya Jammeh set the pace for his national stardom.
