THE
DEVELOPMENT OF THE CROSSING THEATRE
T
• 1997 - there was considerable conflict in the community regarding the Centre, with the key issues being the need for such a Centre, whether Council / Narrabri could afford it and the proposed site.
• Narrabri Town Hall provided the Civic Centre function from 1893 until 1971, when it was demolished.
• 1998 - The Project was known as the Cultural Centre and Council resolved in principal to develop the Centre in 2001.
• 1977 - The concept of developing a Community Hall was proposed and supported by the Community.
• 1999-2000 - Architectural plans, construction cost estimates and reports on the Centre were prepared and evaluated. Council then undertook an assessment of its financial position and ability to service debt.
he history of the development of The Crossing Theatre is summarised below. This information is taken from Council files, newspaper cuttings, Minutes from Council meetings and the reports prepared for the Centre.
• 1988 - Council resolved to develop a Community Hall over the next 10 years. • 1989 - By this stage the project had become a ‘Town Hall / Civic Centre’ rather than a Community Hall. • 1990 - An Investigative Committee was established to explore the need for a Centre. • 1991 - The Investigative Committee Report recommended the development of a ‘Narrabri Community and Entertainment Centre’. • 1993 - The need for a cinema was identified, with a cinema added to the development concept. • 1996 - The project was revived, with Council talking about a Town Hall / Civic Centre, while the community was talking about a Cultural Centre / Community Hall. A new committee was established and reports prepared. • 1997 - Reports recommended a Cultural Centre with the key components being an auditorium and cinema. The Tibbereena Street site was also identified as the preferred site.
4
• 2000 - Following lobbying from the Narrabri Arts Society, Council requested that the architect include space in the Centre for the Civic Art Collection. • 2001 - Cultural Centre Committee started to explore options for operating the Centre. (ESPM), with ESPM submitting to Council a proposal to operate the Centre. • 2003 - The Crossing Theatre opens, named after an historical crossing of the Namoi Creek near the location of the venue. The venue operates under a management contract for almost eight years. • 2011 - Narrabri Shire Council internalises the Management of the venue to achieve the Community’s Vision for the venue.

n 1959 Sweden, young Ingemar (Anton Glanzelius) lives with his dying mother and his nasty older brother. He survives all of life’s knocks by comparing himself to those who are worse off -such as Laika, the little Russian space dog who was rocketed to his death and had nothing to say in the matter. Ingemar begins to identify with Laika more and more as his mother’s health deteriorates, at times dropping to all fours and baying at the moon. When his mother is advised to get some peace and quiet away from her children, Ingemar is sent to live with his loveable uncle and aunt. For the first time, the boy is surrounded by relatives and classmates who pose no threat and who genuinely like him. When his mother dies, he no longer rationalizes his misfortunes by comparing himself to those less fortunate.

The Music Menuhin didn’t just play the violin. Rather, he seemed to regard music as a kind of prayer made audible and mellifluous. Nothing in the world was so natural or so pleasurable. Nothing was more indispensable.

nspired by the beloved New York Times bestseller, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barbery, The Hedgehog is the timely story of Paloma (Garance Le Guillermic) a young girl bent on ending it all on her upcoming 12th birthday. Using her father’s old camcorder to chronicle the hypocrisy she sees in adults, Paloma begins to learn about life from the grumpy building concierge, Renée Michel (Josiane Balasko). When Paloma’s camera reveals the extensive secret library in Renée’s back room, and that the often gruff matron reads Tolstoy to her cat, Paloma begins to understand that there are allies to be found beneath the prickliest of exteriors. As the unlikely friendship deepens, Paloma’s own coming of age becomes a much less pessimistic prospect.

THE
HIGHWAYMEN Tribute Show T he music of country supergroupTheHighwaymen continues to echo down the halls of time thanks in part to Australia’s No. 1 salute to the Outlaws of Country – Dail Platz’s Highwaymen Tribute Show. Since the recent resurgence in popularity of Johnny Cash, audiences haven’t been able to get enough of the Man in Black. What a bonus to be able to catch up with his best buddies as well – Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Cash’s lifelong friend, Waylon Jennings – all sharing the stage together, reliving the music that defined an era.
The Highwaymen towered like giants over the country music scene well into the nineties and enjoyed probably their pinnacle moment at their magical concert at Long Island’s Nassau Stadium in 1990. Now Dail Platz, along with Brent Lillie and Paul Mostyn, have re-created The Highwaymen experience. “This is a tribute in the true sense of the word”, producer Dail Platz states. “Putting the show together, we had an almost overwhelming amount of great material to choose from. The Highwaymen also recorded songs by other artists like Steve Earle and Bob Seger, and we have included these in the show as well”. Hailing from Canada, Dail Platz has toured extensively throughout that country and the United States. At home on fiddle, banjo, mandolin or guitar, he features all these instruments in the show. As well as producing the Highwaymen Tribute Show, Dail takes on the roles of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, successfully capturing the mannerisms, vocal styles and character of both, to the point where his fellow band members now refer to him as ‘Johnny Nelson’. “Brent and Paul were first choices when I was searching for artists to play Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings” Dail says. “Visually and vocally, both manage to emulate the personas of Kris and Waylon while still maintaining their own individuality”. Sold out audiences everywhere have already been hooting, clapping and singing along to Highwaymen favourites like ‘Highwayman’, ‘Silver Stallion’ and ‘Desperadoes Waiting for a Train’ – 40 fantastic songs in all. All the individual classics are there as well, ‘Ring of Fire’, ‘On the Road Again’, ‘Luchenbach Texas’, ‘Bobby McGee’ – no fillers, no false promises. The Highwaymen Tribute Show pays homage to a Golden Era, to the passionate and powerful music of four great legends who, combined, became the biggest country supergroup of all time.

n April 2009, 2 weeks short of his nineteenth birthday Toowoomba teenager Kristjan Terauds died due to complications from illicit drug use. ward-winning Australian playwright David Williamson’s play has been described as part Romeo and Juliet, part Meet the Parents. David Williamson’s satirical comedy Let the Sunshine is set in Noosa. Toby and Ros are retired left wing radicals who flee to the upmarket Sunshine Coast seaside town to escape scandal in Sydney. Ros meets an old school friend Natasha, who is married to Ron, a hugely wealthy property developer. The connection between the two couples seems destined to be brief and acrimonious except for one thing. When their children find romance together, the patter of tiny feet brings on the clashing of egos and then, in typical Williamson fashion, it’s on for young and old. “...highly enjoyable and humorous... Williamson’s ‘Let the Sunshine’ engages the audience and keeps it laughing ... one of our most iconic playwrights”, Elizabeth Emanuel - Media Culture.

ver 30 years ago Abba played eleven dates in Australia. This trip was accompanied by mass hysteria and was captured on film in Abba – the movie. Today, Abba is considered one of the three largest selling recording artists in music history, alongside The Beatles & Elvis. FABBA has been established since 1996, initially as the FABBA girls. Then in 2000 auditions were held to find Benny, Bjorn and a drummer and bass player. In September 2000 FABBA was reformed as a live 6-piece show band. FABBA is now a popular corporate and international act comprising of professional musicians and musical theatre performers. While we are dedicated to replicating the Abba sound, we have also added the theatrics and modern style to the songs as seen in the musical/movie “Mamma Mia”. The FABBA show has an entire wardrobe designed to capture the complete look of Abba – from the 70’s to now. Every FABBA show is tailored to suit each individual event and function from costumes, scripting through to the song list. In 2009, FABBA went into the Wiggles studio and recorded all the songs they perform in the show. As a result, they now can do 4-piece shows for smaller functions and for their regular overseas bookings. FABBA promises to deliver a show that is highly energetic, visually captivating, musically brilliant, audience engaging and always totally entertaining. FABBA will take your audience on a fantastic journey to places even the Priscilla bus hasn’t been!
