FROM THE PUBLISHER Cristina E. Martinez I am pleased to present to you the sixth edition of the Gay & Lesbian Rainbow Pages.

As a locally owned, privately held company, we are part of the community, as such, we experience the highs and lows of our local events like Hurricane Ike. In 2008, the economy took a plunge and we feel the best way to serve our advertisers is to continue offering the most cost effective advertising vehicle for area businesses to reach the gay and lesbian market.

We have listened to our customers and our readers who have expressed how they value the amount of money and time we give back to the community. We want you to know that we consider it a privilege to be able to support our non profits and different events that happen year round in our community. Continuing our tradition of giving back to the community, we are pleased to announce the launching of the Rainbow Pages Foundation. The Rainbow Pages Foundation will serve the GLBT community in different ways, with different programs. Some future plans include a GLBT Youth Center, a scholarship program and other programs to be announced later.

AssistHers is dedicated to creating a community of caregivers who: 1) Educate ourselves about important health issues, with particular emphasis on lesbian-related health issues.

AssistHers is a volunteer organization formed in 1996 to provide nonmedical inhome support and care to lesbian women with illnesses such as cancer, fibromyalgia, HIV/AIDS and multiple sclerosis. Volunteers work together to provide transportation and care to help clients remain in their own homes. Half of our clients live alone. The other half have friends or partners who are struggling as the caregiver and sole breadwinner. Naturally, support and friendship is extended to our clients' partners, caregivers, children and other family members.

AssistHers is a lesbian-based organization which uses the Care Team model, provides ongoing health-related education to its volunteers and is willing to take clients affected by illnesses other than cancer.

Good health is a blessing which affects our relationships, financial stability and every day quality of life. AssistHers is committed to promoting good health and helping women in need.

Statement of Purpose Bunnies on the Bayou, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to raising and distributing funds for various educational and cultural programs. The primary fundraising event is Easter Sunday, and is organized by a group of volunteers which host and underwrite the cost of the event, and with help of valued community sponsors. A service of Montrose Counseling Center Founded in 1987, H.A.T.C.H. creates a safe social environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth ages 13-20s, offers role models and sponsors educational and community outreach opportunities. It is the goal of H.A.T.C.H. to enable youth to be positive contributors to the gay and lesbian community and to society as a whole. Weekly meetings on Fridays and Sundays provide peer support, esteem-building activities, educational and motivational speakers, social and recreational opportunities, small group discussions and HIV/STD information. All meetings and events are supervised by professionally trained adult volunteers. Youth interested in joining H.A.T.C.H., or adults wishing to serve on one of the committees or assist the organization in any way are encouraged to contact H.A.T.C.H.

(Ryan White Planning Council) Mission Statement: The Houston Area HIV Services Ryan White Planning Council will improve the quality of life and advocate for those infected with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS by taking a leadership role in the planning and assessment of HIV resources.

Vision Statement: We envision an educated community where the needs of all HIV/AIDS-infected and/or affected individuals are met by accessible, effective and culturally sensitive health and psychosocial services that are part of a fully coordinated system. The community will continue to intervene responsibly until the end of the epidemic. Goals: Collaborate with and utilize information from all constituencies to plan and deliver high-quality and costeffective care. Identify and provide services to unserved and underserved populations. Promote the dissemination of information on HIV prevention, treatment and resources.

Center first opened its doors, it has served to fortify and enrich Houston's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The Houston Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center provides a home for the birth, nurture and celebration of our organizations, institutions and culture. The Center cares for GLBT groups in need. The Center educates the public and our community.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE AT HOUSTON BUYERS CLUB: • Houston Buyers Club – This program was started twelve years ago to help people with chronic health conditions gain access to affordable or free nutritional supplements.

• Ellen’s Hand – In 2008, we distributed $160,000 in free nutrition supplements to those in need.

• Nutritional Counseling – Nutritional counseling by a registered dietitian (R.D.). An R.D. can guide a client towards safe choices regarding diet and nutritional supplements.

• Education Events – HBC hosts both large and small education events throughout the year.

PFLAG Houston's members are families and friends of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders, sexual minorities themselves, and allies. PFLAG's mission is to support families, educate the public and advocate for equality.

PFLAG has a monthly newsletter, a speakers bureau, a library and an e-mail list. Everyone is welcome at all general and support group meetings, which include groups for spouses and Spanish speakers. Social activities of some of the many “sub-groups” include” Daytimers, the group gathers weekly for lunch at a Montrose area eatery; Multiple monthly informal dining events; “PT-Cruisers”, is a travel group, often joining other GLBT groups for travel; “Hombres De Costa Rica” a targeted travel group with members regularly taking trips to Costa Rica and other Latin Countries; “Camera Bugs”, picture taking and outings; “Bridge Group”, for card playing; “Movie Night”, monthly movies at member homes; “Special Events”, of plays, opera, theater, etc.; and one of our newest groups “Prime Youth”, for those both young and young-at-heart, camping, hiking, etc.

THE LAZARUS HOUSE Revitalizing the community.......

The Lazarus House, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization, provides a complete, low cost program of wellness to individuals suffering from cachexia, a loss of muscle caused by chronic illness. Clasically associated with cancer, and chronic illness like MS and HIV/AIDS, cachexia has also been identified with traumatic injury, and aging persons with failure to thrive syndrome.

(NIH, 2001)The Lazarus House offers life improving skills in a comfortable, home style enviroment, easing fears and discomfort that may be experienced in commercial settings. The Wellness Program offers a non-clinical approach to cachexia by concentrating on body, mind & spirit.
