From the Editor

Hello and Welcome to our very first public online issue of El Girasol! Our team is so excited to be opening our magazine up to new readers and hope that you enjoy the content!

Selina Hernandez

Alpha Beta, Fall 1999 Alpha Beta Chapter President

So much has happened in the past few years and things are continuing to evolve--we offically turned into an online magazine on January 2011 and now in October 2012 are inviting a new audience. We hope that El Girasol not only provides you with creative and interesting content but can also serve as a resource to you.

The overall theme of this issue is She-roism and Heroism. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, a NALFO organization member, is a Latina-oriented sorority founded on March 15, 1989, at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Seventeen women of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds came together to defy the injustices suffered by women, particularly women of color, in the academic, professional and political arenas. The purpose of OPBSI is to serve and educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. As positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors. Shero- Blend of She and Hero. A hero for women’s rights or a woman regarded as a hero. Heroine- A woman admired and emulated for her achievements and qualities.* October is a month chock full of events for our organization especially as it relates to spreading awareness of violence against women in the hopes that one day it won’t be a prevalent issue. Whether it is for this very important philanthropic effort, important social views, highlighting Hispanic Heritage month or highlighting issues concerning mothers and so much more, this issue is overflowing with Sheros. The sheros I speak of are not like that in a novel or film but real woman of diverse backgrounds that are striving to be better and make a difference in their community. These women are mothers, doctors, teachers, social workers, lawyers, writers, students--role models (whether they know it or not) and yes Sheros! Please enjoy this issue and pass it on to your friends! Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Serving and educating through our diversity *www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary

National Conference “Remember(ing) Your Roots” By Desiree Henry, Theta Chapter, Fall 2000

Sorors from across the nation came together to attend OPBSI’s National Conference. The sisterhood filled weekend took place from October 5 - October 7, 2012 at Theta Chapter in Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY. The “Remember Your Roots” theme resonated throughout the entire weekend where sorors had many opportunities to bond and connect with the very women that inspired them to be a part of this organization and continue help them grow professionally and personally. Over 35 Sisters arrived on Friday evening to a Welcome Reception hosted by Theta Chapter. They spent time catching up and playing “Beta Bingo,” an interactive game where sisters get to know each other by asking questions about their lives, such as who “Pledged more than 10 years ago” and who “Speaks three languages.” Winners of the game received gift cards and Diversity Mugs that were donated by Theta Chapter alumnae and Stony Brook University’s Diversity and Affirmative Action office.

After the conference, the Alumnae Association celebrated its 10 year anniversary by hosting an After Conference Alumnae Affair in the Brooks Alumni Room, that was attended by over 70 sisters! Alumnae Sisters enjoyed a delicious Italian buffet and open bar

while catching up and reminiscing about about their favorite sisterhood memories. Even sisters who were unable to attend the morning meetings, joined us for the event, many of them remembering the days they used to attend Stony Brook as undergrads.

After the Alumnae Affair, Theta Chapter undergrads hosted “Beta Fest” a Step, Stroll and Dance Exhibition where they invited organizations from from campus and the local Stony Brook community to perform. Soror Jessica “Remo” Saul was the Mistress of Ceremonies and she did an amazing job. There were performaces by various organizations and a local dance group. The evening was full of fun, strolling and lots of laughter. The National meeting culmunated on Sunday afternoon where chapters were awarded for outstanding

programming achievments. After which sisters enjoyed some additonal bonding time, enjoying the remainder of the weekend. On behalf of Theta Chapter, thank you for allowing us to host this year’s conference. It truly was a wonderful experience to see so many of our sisters on our campus. Spending time with sisters at a place I called home for four years brough many warm memories to light again. As an alumnae of Theta Chapter, I was extremely proud and humbled to be a part of this National Conference. Until the next time...Soleil!

B ringing S isterhood T o T he F orefront By C laribel Crews, Rhode Island Colony, Fall 2003

Many times as sisters we forget that being a “Beta” is not all about business. This summer sisters from the New England Region decided to take a vacation together. We traveled to Saint Maarten and Curacao. Both islands were very beautiful and we had tons of fun at each. Most importantly we were able to be “Betas” without the business. Since we had such a great time, we are planning to go on vacation again next year! If you have any questions about either of the islands feel free to contact alphaepsilon@omegaphibeta.org

She is the first Latina recognition of lifetime commitment to be selected for this honor. and achievements in serving the Hispanic Community from the Hispanic Professional Women’s Association at the 4th Annual

By Nora de Hoyos Comstock, PH.D. Las Comadres is a culturally-based group because I was painfully aware that my cultural roots were slipping away and that I was dangerously close to losing my cultural identity. I felt a deep desire to connect on a close personal level with other Latinas in the community to build and maintain my cultural heritage. Initially I thought I was unique in my need to connect to my cultural past but when an article about me was published in the local paper, the response from Latinas was so overwhelming that I quickly realized that the desire for connection was immense. The word spread quickly from Austin to other cities and the requests for group formation is rapidly outstripping my capacity to meet the demand. In our website we identify what is happening as a “movement” because we really think that is what it is...and it is sweeping us along with it. Las Comadres is for Latinas to build and grow personal relationships. Non- Latino spouses of

Latinos are welcome to join our group, their children are Latino and we will help the family feed the cultural soul. The monthly comadrazos™ are an informal professional networking and support gatherings. There are no dues, no officers, no meetings, no commitment, everything we do is by a self selection process. We send out information and each one of us decides what to do with it. Mostly we email information about things happening in the community, regionally, nationally and internationally. Our information covers jobs, special events, happenings, our National Book club and cultural issues. Las Comadres create workshops or seminars to meet gaps in needs within our communities. From Austin, Texas to New York City, NY Las Comadres are making an impact! For more information visit the website: http://www.lascomadres.org

Beta Cookin’

By Jane Vega, Founder

R ice :

Turkey K ielbasa with Green Peppers and Onions, served with C ilantro R ice (serves 3-4)

K iel basa

1 link of Turkey Kielbasa 1 medium green pepper julienned 1 medium onion julienned 1 small red onion julienned 1-2 cups of chicken stock 1-2 clove of garlic finely chopped 1 tablespoon oil 1.5 tablespoon of Italian seasonings Salt pepper to taste

C i la nt ro R ice

1.5 cups of white medium or long grain white rice 2.75 cups of water 1 tablespoon oil Salt and pepper to taste Large hand full of cilantro rolled up and chopped (cut cilantro just before adding to rice)

P ots N eeded

Medium Sauce pan Large Sautee pan

In medium sauce pan add rice, oil, salt and pepper. I usually add a teaspoon of each right now. Stir until rice is completely coated with oil. Let this sit for 10 seconds. Slowly add water, stir gently. Put on a medium high flame and bring to a boil. Once the rice water is boiling cover pot tightly, lower the flame to low and cook until water is absorbed, 1217 minutes. Once rice is done take ¾ of your cilantro and stir it into the white rice. Add remaining cilantro as a garnish for each plate once rice is served.

K ielbasa :

Heat sauté pan, add oil. Place whole turkey kielbasa link in pan and brown on all sides (if you need to cut it in half to properly brown on all sides that is fine). Set aside on a clean plate. Add green pepper, onion, red onion and garlic to pan. Sauté peppers and onion until they begin to become translucent. Add one cup of chicken stock to deglaze pan. Add remaining stock and reduce just a few minutes. Take kielbasa and slice into 1/8” slices. Add kielbasa back to pan and simmer with vegetables until vegetables become fully translucent. Add Italian seasonings to pan. Reduce liquid in pan until it starts getting a little thick and begins to coat kielbasa and vegetables. Remove from heat. Serve while hot. Feel free to add any other vegetables you love. Sometimes I will add carrots and mushrooms. Add a little extra chicken stock if you add more vegetables. You want that slight coating of great flavor from the liquid reduction.

Empowering Women : (S)heroism Happens Everyday By Jane Vega, Founder It took me a while to consider how to write this. Even after thinking about it I felt, “Who am I to talk about heroism or “sheroism”? When you hear words like these you think grand gestures and grandiose moments. I am a mother of a 5 year old who apparently knows everything (lol), so I decided to ask Jacob about it. Now I was ready to hear about Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the like – and I did hear about them, but what followed caught me off guard. After describing all the things that Superheroes do; he snuggles in and says, “But you do know Mom – not all heroes wear costumes.” Intrigued, I inched in closer. “Really?”I inquired. He responds, “Yes Mommy, I have heroes in my class. They are my friends, they play with me, they don’t hit me, they are nice to me, they share with me and they always get greens (accolades for good behavior in class). Well not always greens but they try to do a good job.” WOW!! Talk about an epiphany moment. I heard hero or shero and pumped the idea of the word up so large that the basics of the words almost escaped me.

A hero behaves in a way that isn’t just good: their actions inspire others to be good. Being friendly or polite, just because. Heroes play nicely with others, they are respectful, they look out for those that can’t do it for themselves. Even my son recognizes that no one get greens for good behavior every day, so let’s not be so judgmental with ourselves or anyone else. Perfection does not exist. It is in the little acts of kindness, support and encouragement that we build trust, self-esteem and confidence. “Do unto others…” We have

22 *El Girasol * October 2012

all heard it before, we all want it that in our lives, but we all have dispositions that occasionally prevent us from showcasing our heroic or sheroic attributes. It is not easy to be open-minded and heroic when we have bills to pay, we are late for work, or our partner got us miffed. Maybe you woke up today and encountered every contrary or difficult person in your neighborhood on the way to work or school. Needless to say it would be difficult to dig deep and pull out love for our fellow man. But you never know where that other person is coming from. Their life experiences have led them down a different, darker road that they are choosing to continue traveling. Sometimes other people’s bad attitudes are not because they are terrible people but rather because they have no idea what happiness or peace is.

The Dalai Lama says, “Be the change you want to see.” This is a heroic/sheroic statement. The implication is, in the face of adversity, in your hour of discontent, in your inability to understand how certain things operate, be the change you want to see. Be the force that moves the mountain. Be the water that perseveres through any obstacle. Be the heat that melts away the drama. So if you really want to be a hero or a shero - push forward – align yourself with what should be happening – be kind to someone – be open to helping – be proactive in your community – and above all else challenge yourself to be open hearted, open minded and full of love. Your one action could be the catalyst that makes all the difference and starts to change everything.

Empowering Women : Our Editor’s (S)heroes’

We asked each of our editors to share who the (s)heros in their lives are.... Ever since I played her in my Pre-K Black History play, I have been continually impressed with the legacy left by Rosa Parks’ life of advocacy and resilience. Despite simply being known for the historic stand against discrimination on public transportation, Rosa lived a life of self-determination and giving back to her community, to ensure that all citizens were given access to equal representation and rights in American society. She was a strong advocate for all minorities, women and other marginalized groups. Her determination and her strong sense of purpose impacted my life greatly and have inspired me to always use my influence in order to give a voice to the needs of the voiceless. She is my ultimate shero!

Marielys Garcia It is hard to pinpoint one person that I looked up to in my life. I have to say that I have been very lucky to have some very stong and independent women who have nutured me and helped me become the woman I am today. From my mom, to my aunts, some of my closests friends and family, the women who are around me have been through so many obstacles and challenges in their lives. Being able to overcome those challenges and continue on with a smile on their face is something I truly admire and try to carry out in my everyday life. I feel blessed to be a part of a family and circle of friends who are sheroes in their everyday lives.

Desiree Henry

24 *El Girasol * October 2012

There are plenty of people I admire and look up to, especially my own family, but I find my true inspiration comes from many people, not just one. My hero is anyone who is willing to stand up for what they believe in, no matter what their “support” network or society may say. Anyone who approaches life with such tenacity and vigor that they follow their passion, take risks, and follow their heart and soul because in the end they have found what it means to truly live.

Amanda Crane My grandmother, Guillermina Davila has lived on this earth for over 94 years and is still a fiery and vibrant woman. She has experienced the harshness and the joys of life and is a living history that I cherish. Mai (what we all call her) has lived through her mother dying when she was only in the second grade, raised her siblings and experienced one die in her arms before reaching adolescence, given birth to 5 children in her house--one of which died before the age of 6, migrated to New York City without knowing the English language, outlived all her siblings, buried her husband, my handsome grandfather Ventura Hernandez, outlived a naïve doctors premature death diagnosis, has become a great grand mother and a great great grandmother! She has lived this all while keeping her uplifting spirit, realistic attitude on life, inner peace, inner strength and her amazing love for people. She is a rock and although her education doesn’t surpass elementary school she has a world of wisdom and knowledge to offer. She is my belove dbeautiful “Abuelita Linda”, my Shero!

Know Your Rights The Great Booby Debate By Yvette Lopez-Colgan, Theta, Spring 1998 The Great Booby Debate: Bloomberg Proposes Restrictions on Baby Formula The Internet and media are all abuzz over NYC mayor, Michael Bloomberg’s, proposed restriction on baby formula in NYC hospitals. This is a topic near and dear to my heart as I breastfed my first child for 13 months and am now 36 weeks pregnant with my second child and plan to exclusively breastfeed.

First, here are the facts: Under the organization “Latch on NYC”, Bloomberg is asking NYC hospitals to voluntarily restrict access to formula and provide education and support to breastfeeding moms. By joining this voluntary initiative for NYC maternity hospitals to support mother’s decision to breastfeed participating hospitals have agreed to enforce the NY state hospital regulation to not supplement breastfeeding infants with formula feeding unless medically indicated and documented on the infant’s medical chart, restrict access to infant formula by hospital staff, tracking infant formula distribution and sharing data on formula distribution with the Health Department, discontinue the distribution of promotional or free infant formula and prohibit the display and distribution of infant formula promotional materials in any hospital location. Despite all the media propaganda to the contrary, the initiative itself seems quite positive and will protect those moms who have chosen to breastfeed exclusively, while still respecting the rights of those women who choose not to. So why all the debate and controversy? In a society where a woman’s breasts are viewed as sexual objects as opposed to natural sources of nutrition for a baby, and where most of our mamis and abuelas bottle fed and find it somewhat disgusting to breastfeed, it’s easy to see why there is such debate. The reality is that breast milk is the number one best source of nutrition for a human baby, not cow’s milk, which is where formula is derived. Breast milk has numerous health benefits for mommy and baby, including but not limited to preventing

26 *El Girasol * October 2012

obesity, asthma, allergies, diarrhea, ear infections in the baby and preventing ovarian and breast cancer in the mom. It should be a no-brainer, right? Yet, in our overly commercialized, capitalistic society, big formula companies have made many believe that formula is cleaner and easier and more “civilized”, but let’s wake up here sistas! Would you put your baby to a cow’s utters and allow them to suckle? Of course not! Just this week alone I found on my doorstep, unsolicited, a 3 pound box from Similac which included a bottle, a free sample of Similac Advance and Similac sensitive and about $30 worth of coupons for the products should I decide to buy it. For those moms on the fence about breastfeeding or having a hard time (which is the majority), it is so easy to open

that box, fill that bottle, mix up that white powder and shove it in their baby’s mouth, but the consequences can be disastrous for the health of that child. I respect every woman’s right to choose what is right for her and her baby but what’s wrong with preventing free and unrestricted access to formula in hospitals? Maybe if it weren’t such an easy option more moms would stick with breastfeeding. Formula is pushed on moms even before the baby is out and at times the nurses in the hospitals will give the baby formula without permission. If it were an illegal or prescription drug, such soliciting would shock the conscience, but the long-term consequences for a mom who is trying to breastfeed can be nearly the same. Once any bit of formula is introduced or supplemented it changes the flora of the baby’s stomach and will also act to reduce the mom’s supply, since the baby will sleep longer (because formula is heavier) and not nurse as often, not to mention other dangers like nipple confusion or adverse reactions to the formula. Most women’s biggest fear is that they are not producing enough. Since we have no hash marks on our breasts with the amount of ounces like a bottle, it is impossible to tell what’s coming out. Formula companies pray on that insecurity when the reality is there are very few women who cannot produce enough milk for a child who is exclusively breastfeeding. We have to learn to trust ourselves and just because the baby cries doesn’t mean they are still hungry. Bloomberg may be a smart and wealthy man but his plan is not a novel idea. We are far behind even many underdeveloped countries when it comes to breastfeeding and most European (like the U.K.) and South American countries (like Brazil) have long ago banned formula from hospital and clinics in order to encourage and promote breastfeeding. The truth is breastfeeding is not easy or as natural as you might think when you attempt it because our culture has strayed so far from what is the natural course of things. Women who are attempting to breastfeed may have little to no support system. We may not have grown up seeing our moms and aunts

do it and since they didn’t do it, it is often hard for them to help or relate. Even my mom repeated over and over, “Ella tiene hambre, por eso esta llorando. Tu no le’ sta dando na” (“she is crying because she is hungry, you’re not giving her anything”). My mom, Grandma, husband and even pediatrician were telling me to “just give her formula”. Luckily I am as stubborn as a mule and I found an angel, by way of a lactation consultant who came and gave me the support and encouragement I needed to go on for over 13 months (I also found a new pediatrician who supported my choices). What’s the result? My child has only been ill a handful of times in over 3 years, has no allergies, never had an ear infection or needed antibiotics for any reason and is a happy, healthy, extremely smart child. Is it all from breastfeeding? Probably not, but I would like to think that it helped. So ladies, never forget that breast is best! If you have a sister, cousin or friend who is pregnant or post-partum and is considering or in the midst of breastfeeding, give her a hug and tell her she can do it and is doing a good job; it could make all the difference.

Facing F earlessness By Dr. Cassandra St. Vil , Mu Chapter, Spring 2002

What a privilege it is to live your life exactly how you choose. I make choices I can live by and take actions that I am proud of, and attribute this learning to one of the most frustrating periods of my life. Just over a year ago, I felt trapped in my existence, attached to a job I hated within an organization I formerly loved. Mission had long since left its practice, and I felt warped and disappointed to the point where getting out of bed was a daunting task.

It took me a whole year to finally resign. When I finally took the leap, I quit without necessarily knowing what was ahead (and oddly enough, without having secured another job). I needed the opportunity to breathe positive energy back into my life and rediscover the sense of self I had lost in the time I spent whining and complaining. I made the choice to leave. I also made the choice to cut off my hair into a short new style that I loved, pick up an interest in walking and running, leisurely read whatever I chose, redecorated my home just how I wanted and dated just as much as I had hoped. What a season! It felt great to become me again! The highlight of it all was that I invited my friends and family to celebrate my “renewal” with me. Together, we breathed new life into each other, our families, our careers, and more.

With my newfound freedom, I started on a new career path . At age 29, I reset and restarted. I took an odd job in between my earlier career in the nonprofit sector and my new one in education. I knew I had much to learn, and chose a position as a community

organizer during my gap year. Although challenging, it gave me just the insight I needed in education policy and reform to prepare for the classroom. I met my 9th graders just one year later, and have loved them from the start. I am a high school teacher now. I teach high-need students in a brilliant academic environment where I am challenged, supported and inspired. I still love walking long distances and choose to do so to and from my new school. My short haircut looks great, and I still date who I choose. My home is a comfortable reflection of my recharged energy, and I couldn’t be happier. Earlier this week, I learned that my former boss (also the cause of much angst in my previous role) was recently let go for poor performance. I volunteer at my old organization, choosing how I continue to stay involved in ways that fulfill me personally and professionally.

I am happier now. I choose me. In every moment there is an opportunity for new learning. As adults we settle into routines, for better or worse, often because they are familiar or comfortable. I chose to take a course that was fulfilling, and it has kickstarted my life in ways I never thought imaginable. My mindset has changed. I have removed any reserve, fear or selfdoubt I once allowed to block my path, and couldn’t be happier for it. Choose to renew yourself, your relationships, your career, your life. Use fear as a launch pad to fully live the life you were meant to. It is easier to keep still because you are afraid, but it is something powerful, riveting, enlightening and amazing to be and keep FEARLESS knowing that you and your life deserve more than your present.

Choose you. To your own Renewal... October 2012 *El Girasol * 29

Sunshine Corner Embracing Change By Desiree Henry, Theta Chapter, Fall 2000

Change is inevitable. It happens every day around us, from the weather to our jobs, friendships, loved ones...the list can go on and on. This year has been quite interesting with many of those around me experiencing major changes in their lives. It made me start thinking about the many times in my life where I have experienced major change and how I was able to overcome the anxiety that sometimes comes with change. I always prided myself on not getting easily frazzled by unexpected occurrences. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I lost my father at a very young age to cancer. I developed an attitude of...

“Sometimes bad things happen, but life goes on.” I understood how difficult these types of situations could be, but I also knew that it wasn’t the end of the world. That attitude helped me get through many of my own challenges. We are all challenged at various points in our lives. Think about how well do you handle change? If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. ~Mary Engelbreit If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies. ~Author Unknown God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference ~Author Unknown If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire, then you got a problem. Everything else is inconvenience. ~Robert Fulghum The only disability in life is a bad attitude. ~Scott Hamilton

30 *El Girasol * October 2012

You will eventually start to realize that you can either worry about what’s going to happen or take control and embrace the change that is about to happen. Regardless of how you deal with change, both ways require your time and energy, neither of which you should waste. Being able to roll with the punches and maintain a positive attitude in the face of change can help throughout many aspects of your life. If there is one thing I have learned in the last couple of years, its that you never know what unexected life alterering situation may be thrown your way.

Enjoy your life to the fullest and enjoy each day. You never know what may happen in the next week, month or even year, but be ready for it all and keep a positive attitude! Learn to readjust your attitude constantly. I used to have a quote above my desk at work that said, “Attitude is the little thing that makes a big difference.” Having the right attitude and embracing the change before you, will make all the difference on whether that change will help you grow or keep you where you are. We can’t be afraid of what is to come because “life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” Embrace the change and embrace the life that is to come!

Empowering Women : To the woman who had a hand in my success By Sherlene Ayala, Sigma Chapter, Fall 2001

First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at the Democratic National Convention on September 4, 2012. I, along with millions of other women, clinged to our tissues and listened intently as she spoke about the values of our nation. Paying special tribute to the critical role of parents and grandparents, her words made me reflect on the people who had a hand in my success. I lived in a community where the educational system did not invest the best of resources, but I had teachers and mentors who taught me about dignity and humility, as well as honesty and integrity. I had a supportive community of neighbors and family friends who would encourage me when they saw me walking to and from school. I also had my number one cheerleader push me everyday, and that was my grandmother. Wela was and still is the driving force in my life. I have never told her how much she means to me, but after hearing Michelle Obama speak, I knew I needed to acknowledge what she has done for me. As her birthday approaches, I thought I’d write her a letter and share with her that she has played a role in my success.

32 *El Girasol * October 2012

Ma-

As you approach your 65th birthday, I wanted to give you the biggest gift I could think of to show you my sincere gratitude for what you have done for me. In 1993 when my mom died, I remember the overwhelming feeling of confusion, sadness and anger. As a teenager, I couldn’t understand why my life had taken this change of course. I know the years following were tough, and at the time I didn’t know how to accept my new life changes, and while spending so much time on me-me-me, I had failed to realize that you had lost your daughter. Our lives changed. You raised me like I was your own, and you made sure that I had everything I needed, within our means. You attended parent teacher orientation, went on school trips, and dropped me off at the bus on the first day at my summer youth job. You gave me a once in a lifetime sweet 16, taught me how to cook rice and beans, and drove 12 hours to attend my college graduation. When I got my first job out of college, you bought me a mattress set, and when I bought my first house, you came over and gave it your blessing. When I got accepted to my doctoral program, your words meant more to me than anything. You said, “Neca, I am so proud of you.” In the 30 years of my life, you have selflessly given me your time, energy, money and your love to ensure I grew up to be a great woman. I know it was not easy, and you faced many challenges, but you have done a remarkable job, and I only wish to be the woman you are today. You are a woman of dedication and perseverance. I haven’t seen you give up on any of your grandchildren despite the ups and downs, and that is something I wish to continue. You are a woman of character. You have taught me to hold myself with a certain level of prestige and elegance. You are a woman of integrity and faith. Your love for God is

impressive and one day I hope to find that connection in spirituality. You are a woman who placed high standards on education knowing that without it, I would be nobody. You are a woman that is respected and well liked, not to mention sarcastic and sometimes sassy. When I consider that you are a mother of 4, and singlehandley raised all 4 kids, plus grandchildren, I am impressed with your courage to keep the family going. You have lost many people in your life, including all of your siblings, one of your daughters and friends. I am in awe when I see that you keep going. I wish I had that courage and stability to do that. I could never be the woman you are today. You are a great mother and grandmother, and more importantly my friend. In the course of my adult life, I have transitioned my selfish ways of thinking, and recognized that you are a gem and the day I become a mom, I will instill the values you have instilled in me – faith, love, honesty, integrity and dedication. As I bring this letter to a close, I have that feeling in my throat that’s telling me to let the tears flow down my cheek. There is no way for me to show you or tell you how much I love you. How grateful I am to you. How much you inspire me. I want to thank you for loving me and listening to me, and being there for every step of my life. For letting me discover my path in life, and allowing me to make my mistakes. I could not imagine what my life would be like without your influence and passion for my growth. You are my role model, my best friend, and more importantly my mom. I love you more than you know.

Empowering Women : The (S)hero in All of Us By Amanda Crane, Iota Chapter, Spring 2000 As a child I vividly remember watching She-ra and Thundercats (my favorite was Lionel) and thinking they were my heros. Why? Because they were powerful, they stood for what was right, they demonstrated great strength, and they had cool costumes and weapons. Who didn’t want to defeat the bad guys every time?

I’m sure if you flashed back to your childhood and who your (s)hero was, it may have been a cartoon character or your local civil servant. It’s funny to see how simple life was and how we enjoyed life day by day without any pressure or looming self-doubts about oneself.

As we grow older, we learn the true definition of what a hero is and let our own personal experiences help mold who, or what that may look like. As I grew to be an older…ahem I meant wiser… person, I realized that although some of the reasons I looked up to those cartoon characters were rather superficial, at its core it helped define what I believed in and valued- strength, standing for what is right, assisting and defending their community, and enjoying life with gusto. Throughout time there have been many public and local figures who have fit the bill for me and as is true to my nature, who my hero was always changed because I refused to settle on just one. The funny thing is I never articulated

34 *El Girasol * October 2012

this to anyone and especially not to the “lesser known” people because I thought it would be awkward to say it to them (and on occasion for fear of sounding like a Mariah Carey or Enrique Iglesias song). As I reflect on this topic I am reminded of a time in middle school where in class we had to write about who our hero was and one of my classmates wrote about me! I was taken aback and didn’t know how to respond. I was honored but then thought, why me? I’m a nobody. I’m just a plain old kid who didn’t even run with the popular crowd! It is now that I realize that we are all hero’s in our own respect. We don’t have to leap over buildings in a single bound, call out to the Power of Grayskull, or anything like that!

By being true to ourselves and tapping into our inner greatness, we can and will have a great impact on others and who knows… maybe today, maybe tomorrow, or maybe next week someone will come up to you and say “Hey, I just want you to know, you’re my hero.”
