Observer wins 11 APA Media Awards By Opelika Observer Staff The 2020 Alabama Press Association Media Awards list of winners was released last Friday afternoon via press releases for all three segments of the contest. COVID-19 forced the APA to cancel the annual summer event in Orange Beach. The Observer won 10 awards in this year’s editorial contest with the most significant award being a first place win for the 2019 Veteran’s Tribute publication which was published and inserted into the newspaper last November. The publication also won a third place award in the advertising segment of the competition. The 2019 publication was the third annual veteran’s tribute for the Observer and focused on veterans who are serving the Lee County community as independent business owners.

Owner and publisher of the Observer Michelle Key was excited to see this publication receive recognition. As the wife of a retired Navy chief, she has a passion for honoring the veterans of this community. “Having been a navy wife for more than 20 years, I know first hand the toll that service can have on families. Veterans and their families deserve the community’s support and honor. This is just one small way that we here at the Observer can give them that honor,” Key said. “I’m
so incredibly proud of the people who have given so much of their time and energy to the Observer. Everyone deserves much respect for the hard work and effort that went into every single entry. I am so humbled by their willingness to not only work with me but to continue to teach me and help the Observer grow and thrive.” The Observer also won second place for their division in the See AWARDS, page A3
