OPELIKA MAYOR GARY FULLER WINS FIFTH TERM By Opelika Observer Staff Opelika’s Mayor for the last 16 years, Gary Fuller, re-won his seat on Tuesday. Fuller received 66% of the votes, 4,800, and Tiffany Gibson-Pitts received 34%. Fuller was originally elected in 2004 and was a council member before that. Over his last several years as mayor, Fuller worked with a council that recruited jobs to the city, created new homes for the area, expanded the high school, created the Opelika Sportsplex, created a new police department and municipal court facility, among other things. During the Opelika Chamber of Council Forum for candidates on Aug. 12, Fuller said that he will continue to recruit new jobs to the city, in addition to the more than 4,000 he has already. “My business experience, knowledge and relationships are what set me apart from my opponent,” he said. Recently, the city approved a new library and created the community relations special services division for the Opelika Police Department, Fuller said. He said he also wants

to focus on bringing more Pre-K programs to the area. Fuller said he believes that lowering crime starts at home and in school. “That’s why this firstclass Pre-K is so important that we start these kids very, very young,” he said. “And then we need programs for the children." Fuller beat Tiffany Gibson-Pitts for the mayoral position. Gibson-Pitts currently serves as the Opelika Ward 2 council member but will vacate that seat when Councilwoman-elect Erica Norris takes office in November. "I deeply appreciate the confidence our citizens expressed today with their vote," Fuller said. "My campaign team, led by Barry Whatley, did an amazing job! It was certainly a different campaign because of COVID-19. We didn’t do the citywide door to door out of respect and concern for our citizens and my wonderful volunteers. I believe we were able to successfully communicate our message with local radio and newspaper advertising, direct mail and social media.
