Deadline to sponsor wreaths for Fort Mitchell Nov. 30 By Will Fairless Associate Editor This year, although the annual event will look different because of COVID-19, there will still be wreaths laid on the headstones at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Wreaths Across America (WAA) will be laying wreaths at Fort Mitchell on Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. During that time, the cemetery will be closed to the public; the

wreath-laying ceremony will be recorded. Wreaths Across America’s annual trip from Harrington, Maine to Arlington has become known as the world’s largest veterans parade, including stops at schools, monuments and veterans’ homes to further the organization’s mission to “remember, honor and teach,” according to its website. Fort Mitchell National Cemetery is one of thousands of locations

that participate in the wreath-laying every year. There has been a wreath-laying ceremony at Fort Mitchell annually since 2006. “[Our veterans] sacrificed themselves and gave their lives for our country,” said Karrie Schwerin, the location coordinator for WAA at Fort Mitchell. “The least we can do is honor them with a wreath.” Every wreath that the organization lays to honor those who have See WREATHS, page A2

Longtime Opelika business Southern Crossing was awarded the 2020 Downtown Business of the Year award Friday at the Opelika Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. Selected each year by the Opelika Main Street Board of Directors, the award honors an exceptional business that has contributed to the growth and prosperity of downtown Opelika.

“Southern Crossing has been a staple of downtown for well over 20 years,” said Opelika Main Street Executive Director Ken Ward. “This business invested in downtown at the start of our rebirth and has served thousands of customers while also creating dozens of new jobs.” Previous recipients of the award include Mama Mocha’s Bodega and Taylor Made Designs.

Journals offer affirmation on front, outlet inside By Will Fairless Associate Editor Khadijah Torbert, an Opelika native now living in Tuscaloosa, started a business this year that she hopes will affect more than just her wallet. Made Worthy Journal Notebooks LLC was started by Torbert in June 2020, four years after she was divinely inspired to create such a line of journals. “The idea to have my own journal notebook came to me in a dream,” Torbert said.

“I truly believe God was pushing me into creating this journal line in 2015-2016 after a terrible breakup.” She kept on journaling in other brands’

notebooks until she got serious about starting her own business in 2019. The next year, Torbert thought it was the perfect time to introduce the world to her line of affirming notebooks. “With everything that has gone on from a global pandemic to racial injustice to other things that just happen in life, I felt the time was now, this year, to create the journal in order for people to release in a safe manner,” she said.
