Forecast Calls For "Snow" in Downtown Opelika There is a chance for snow in Opelika next week, but not the cold, frozen kind that can disrupt travel and leave a mess on the roadways. Rather, next week’s snowfall is expected to bring nothing but laughter to the downtown area. On Tuesday, Nov. 30 the Opelika Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual community Christmas event Snopelika at Courthouse Square. Snopelika will be a winter wonderland festival from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Artificial

Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller announced last week that an existing Opelika manufacturing company will be expanding. Cumberland Plastic Systems will be expanding its existing facility and investing more capital to build and expand its current facility. “Our continued growth has come from both new customers and existing customers,” said Cumberland Chief Financial Officer Tim Kling. “Currently Cumberland employs 170 employees and this expansion will create 25 new team member positions which will fill

warehousing, production and technical positions within the company.” Cumberland Plastic Systems is located in Opelika’s Northeast Industrial Park along the I-85 corridor. The current facility has 155,000 square feet for injection molding and value-add assembly, housing 33 injection machines from 40 tons to 1,500 tons, as well as many assembly operations for varied customer applications. The planned $5.7 million expansion is for an additional 60,000 square feet of warehouse space and additional manufacturing equipment. “We are delighted at the commitment Cumberland Plas-

tic is making in our community,” Fuller said. “The success that warrants additional investment and the creation of additional jobs is proof that the company has outstanding leaders and staff in place.” For more information, please contact John Sweatman, Economic Development Project Manager for the City of Opelika, at 334-7055115. “Cumberland Plastic Systems is a great community partner,” said city of Opelika Economic Development Director Lori Huguley. “It is a great testament to their workforce and the business climate in Opelika that they continue to invest and grow here.”

The Shinhwa Auto USA Corporation announced last week that it will grow its manufacturing operation in Auburn, Alabama, through the addition of high-pressure aluminum die casting and associated post-processing. This substantial invest-

ment will enhance Shinhwa’s capabilities in Auburn while maintaining its commitment to highly automated, technology-driven manufacturing. “Shinhwa has been a great addition to Auburn’s high-tech manufacturing base since they chose Auburn for their first U.S. operation in 2019,” said Auburn

Mayor Ron Anders. “We are excited they have decided to invest an additional $70 million and create some 48 jobs over the next two years. This is just another example of the impact a strong, diversified industrial base has on our local economy now and for years to come.” See SHINHWA, page A2
