Christmas is an especially fun time for children and the Opelika Pubic Library has events planned for families to spend time together this season. There are the annual events, like the movie marathon and the Fa La La Festival, and a new event for this year — A Very Merry Stroll.

“At our new library, we have a walking path,” said Rosanna McGinnis, library director. “We are going to line that walking path with live Christmas trees. Businesses can sponsor those trees and decorate them which will make a festive atmosphere for people to walk through.”

A tree lighting occured on Dec. 3 and the trees will stay up and lit until Dec. 31, McGinnis said.

One local resident, Kristin Mayes, took the idea for the Very Merry Stroll in Huntsville, where the idea is dubbed the ‘Tinsel Trail’. “She really wanted to see it happen here so she has been spearheading it for us,” McGinnis said.

Visiting Huntsville, which is home for Mayes, involves a visit each holiday season to the Tinsel Trail, she said.

“Christmas is my absolute favorite time of the year,” Mayes said. “So, for me personally, it’s not about the gifts, it’s about the memories being made with family and friends.

I wanted to bring this to Opelika because when I moved here seven years ago from a much larger city in North Alabama, I immediately fell in love with city of Opelika and I refer to it as ‘Mayberry’ like from the Andy Griffith show.

“I love how supportive and tight knit this community is. Opelika is so welcoming of ideas, so I took a chance and decided why not and presented the ‘Tinsel Trail’ idea from my hometown of Huntsville. I thought this idea would bring a lot more people into the beautiful downtown area of Opelika and help promote community.”

Mayes takes her daughter to Huntsville’s Tinsel Trail and she said she believes Opelika’s version will be a fun, free, family event.

“The amount of joy it brings is indescribably, it’s truly magical,” she said. “My favorite memories about the Tinsel Trail are seeing my daughter’s eyes light up, hearing all the families ‘oohs and ahhs’ over the creativity of the deco-

rations on the trees and watching families and friends take photo after photo by their favorite trees. I feel like when I am visiting the Tinsel Trail, I am getting a second chance to be a kid all over again.”

It did not have to be only businesses that participated, however, McGinnis said, families and organizations were also allowed to sponsor trees.

The fee to sponsor a tree was based on the size of the tree. Six-to-sevenfoot trees cost $250 while 10-foot trees were $400.

“All money raised is going, after the cost of the tree and all the things associated with that are deducted, are going toward, the Library Friends are trying to purchase a musical garden for our out-door space, as well as a dinosaur bone playground structure,” McGinnis said.

The new library opened in October at 1100 Glenn St. “We’re super fortunate in our new building to have green space attached to it,” McGinnis said.

“We have a walking trail that we have put in out there and within that walking trail, there are big open areas. Both of the play pieces that we’ve selected are not your

traditional playground equipment. It’s more inclusive equipment where, like a musical garden, all ages and abilities can make music and play on.

“So think percussion instruments where you just bang on the drums and there’s a [xylophone] … Then the dinosaur structure is like a T-Rex skeleton that’s sort of in the ground. It’s not as gruesome as it sounds, but it’s just to climb on and jump off of and play around.”

McGinnis said that this is one way to help children be able to have an active place to play at the library and get out their energy.

“Families were coming for story time and then leaving to go play somewhere else,” she said. “So we want to have that as an amenity as well, with our parking and our convenience, it’s nice to have it all in one spot. You can come inside, read a book,

come to story time, then go outside, have lunch at the pavilion and play at the park for a while.”

The annual Christmas Movie Marathon will be held on Dec. 23 beginning at 9 a.m. with movies continuing through the library’s closing at 4 p.m.

“We’re going to have a lot of decorations that fall in line with the city’s decor,” McGinnis said. “So there will be some new things to look out [for], which is always fun, a lot of beautiful photo opportunities.

“But it’s a great way to spend time together without the expectation of spending money. So, nothing that we’re doing, outside of fundraisers, is charged. So, our movie marathon, we have popcorn at that, that’s available for free. Our Fa La La Festival, all of the crafts and games are for free. We know that it’s an expensive time of year

and we don’t want to be one more place that you have to spend money.”

McGinnis said she enjoys watching families come together with multiple generations.

“Grandparents might come in town and the kids are excited to show off their space to their families,” she said. “So maybe parents who are typically at work have more vacation time or grand-parents, or aunts and uncles are in town, and they come to the library and they say, ‘look at my place.’

“Kids really see the library as their space, and we encourage that and it’s just wonderful and very heartwarming for me to see the ownership that our families have over the library.”

The Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch has set up a memorial to honor the eight victims who died in a car crash in June. Four ranch girls lost their lives, along with Director Candice Gulley’s two children and two nephews. Gulley was the only survivor of the van involved in the accident. The display includes a cross and eight obelisks.

The city of Opelika reminds rental property owners that registration of rental properties is due no later than Jan. 1, 2022.

On Sept. 21, 2021, the city of Opelika approved an ordinance adopting a registration and inspection program for residential properties being

rented within the city of Opelika. Registration began on Oct. 1, 2021.

The city is developing an app where landlords will be able to register properties. It will be available in the coming months.

Opelika Environmental Services Department Announces Recycling Changes CONTRIBUTED BY CITY OF OPELIKA

Beginning last week, the city of Opelika Environmental Services (OES) Department is no longer taking batteries at either recycling center. In addition, there are some changes at the 8th Avenue

center regarding where to put materials.

Due to processing issues, OES will no longer be able to accept batteries at the 8th Avenue or Jeter Avenue Recycling Centers. The following three stores in the Tiger Town area currently accept batteries for recycling.

Battery Source takes all types of batteries.

Home Depot takes power tool batteries.

Lowe’s takes batteries in general. Please contact these stores for battery recycling details.

In order to get some of our recycling items out of the weather, we

have placed a refurbished shipping container at the 8th Avenue Recycling Center. This container will handle electronics, shredded paper, aluminum cans, paint and cooking oil.

The only electronics we take for recycling are flat-screen monitors, laptop comput-

ers, smartphones and gaming systems. Please place all other electronics in your trash.

Shredded paper and aluminum cans must be in plastic bags.

The center can only accept 1-gallon cans of paint, no 5-gallon buckets. Used cooking oil may be brought in

its original container or you may call our office at 334-705-5480 for a 1-gallon recycling jug.

wish I could give you a hug right now. I really do.

I’d reach through this screen and squeeze you so firmly that your eardrums would pop.

I would hold you for a long time, too. I would hug you for five, ten or thirty minutes. Long enough for everything to start getting a little weird.

Then I’d hug you some more.

Because people need hugs. We need them in a biological way.

Oh, sure, you probably think you’re doing all right in a hugless world. You think you’re surviving just fine without all that sappy Oprah Winfrey business.

You’re tough. You’re

self-sufficient. You’re smart. You’re intelligent.

You drink V8.

But you’re wrong, pal.

You need hugs. You need someone to embrace you, for your own health, and you need it right this moment.

You see, when two people hug, their hearts are squished together, only separated by inches of bone, adipose and muscle. During a hug, the two cardiac pumps actually start beating together like two kettle drums making perfect music.

Sort of like two violinists, playing Strauss. Or like two clarinetists in junior-high, playing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” simultaneously, but in

t’s that time of year again. I love Christmas and the whole month from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve – all the planning and buying and parties and food! But, the other day, when someone asked me what I wanted most from Santa, I responded without even thinking – “Quiet. I want a whole lot of quiet.”

Maybe it’s the state of the political climate; maybe it’s the after effects of a world-altering pandemic; or maybe it’s just that I’m getting old. But everything seems so … noisy! Traffic is at an all-time high in our city, and with that comes the constant blaring of horns and road-rage-fueled yells from open windows.

Shoppers in Walmart and the grocery store seem to be speaking at full volume, and my ears are constantly ringing. Every time money comes out of my bank account, my phone bleeps loudly at me — and it happens frighteningly often! Even the Christmas music I love so much has

become irritating. It loops constantly in my office, every day from 7:30 to 5 p.m.

If I hear Englebert Humperdinck sing ‘Blue Christmas’ one more time, I just may take to drinking.

I’ve never been a Scrooge. I tend to be more like Buddy the Elf, all excited and giddy at the thought of all this Christmas noise. But not this year. This year I am channeling Ebenezer quite brilliantly.

Maybe I just need a day off to lay in bed and listen to nothing but my own breathing.

This morning, after my shower spent wondering how likely it would be that I could win the lottery and plan my solitary day of quiet, I turned on the news … on mute, because there’s nothing louder than talking news heads in the morning.

And there it was, filling the screen — a snapshot. Slightly blurry and off center, the photo was of three little girls. Their gap-toothed grins and curly blond hair left no doubt they were sisters. Two of the girls were lying in the bathtub, snuggled together, in sweatshirts and ponytails. One of the girls held a doll tightly in her arms.

The third girl was leaning against the edge of the tub. All three were locking eyes with whoever took the picture.

I wish I’d turned off the television right

You probably know this already, but hugs release a chemical in the brain called oxytocin, which is what most neurologists refer to as the body’s “Woodstock” hormone.

Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that makes you feel, quite literally, loved. It is the body’s own love drug.

When you give or get a hug, your body is flooded with oxytocin, your “love” hormone levels go through the stratosphere.

Your blood pressure goes down, your immune system improves and your mammary glands begin producing more milk. Which is nothing short of a miracle, especially if you’re male.

In short, a hug can save a person’s life.

When I was a boy, at our church there was a volunteer program called the Baby Savers. The idea was simple. Anyone could sign up to cuddle and hug premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit at the local hospital.

Church ladies did this because cuddling was medically proven

to improve a preemie’s chance of survival.

Physical touch stimulates a newborn’s immune system, circulatory system, central nervous system and all the other systems. Simply put, babies who are not touched will die.

Well, there was this man in our church who I am going to call Clyde. That wasn’t his real name, Clyde isn’t anyone’s real name.

Clyde was a large Black man with cotton white hair and a quiet disposition. In fact, he rarely spoke. Clyde’s wife did all his talking for him.

His wife was wonderful. Everyone loved her. She was an outgoing, animated woman, with a powerful voice. She sang soprano in the choir and could belt out hymns loud enough to crack the glass above the baptismal.

When Clyde’s wife died, he almost died with her. The poor man was a wreck. He was stuck inside his house for almost a year. He lost his job, his gumption and he became famously depressed.

People from the church would stop by his home to deliver cheese-laden casseroles, enormous dinners, and spend time with him.

But truthfully, nothing could bring Clyde out of his funk.

That’s when my aunt added Clyde’s name to the Baby Savers sign-up sheet.

My aunt tells the story better than I do, but she recalls watching this six-foot-nine man, with shoulders wider than a Buick Roadmaster, walk into the NICU and lift a premature baby in his herculean hands.

Clyde sat in a rocking chair and cradled infants until the night shift nurses had to send him home. He was back the next morning even though he wasn’t on the schedule. He hugged babies again the following day, too. And the day after that.

My aunt says one afternoon Clyde started crying when he was holding a preemie. He started heaving and quivering so badly they had to take the baby from his arms.

Then, all the little-

old-lady volunteers surrounded Clyde and group-hugged him until they practically smothered him. My aunt said she had never seen a grown man cry that hard before. She also said that hugging babies is what eventually brought the old man back to life.

Years later, I saw that man in a grocery store. He was stocking the shelves when he recognized me. The first thing he did was come at me with his arms open. It was a colossal hug.

We held each other in the middle of the supermarket and I was lost in his embrace.

Clyde slapped my back and I slapped his, as Christmas music played over the intercom.

And, even if only for a moment, I felt the profound weight of love. Real love. Biologically transforming love. The same love that made this universe. The same love that is saving this selfish and tired human race, even as we speak.

Then I came directly home and wrote this.

Plum Cake then. I could have just carried that sweet image in my head today. But the caption appeared underneath the photograph — “PHOTO TAKEN MOMENTS BEFORE TORNADO KILLS CHILD.” And so I reached for the remote and tapped the volume key. The words rolled over me while I stood there. You’ve probably heard their story by now.

The girls lived in Kentucky with their parents. Like we all have been told to do, they were sheltering in the bathroom while tornados sliced through their county.

Their mom took that picture to send to relatives to assure them that they were all safe.

Just minutes later, none of them were safe.

When nature was through with them, they found themselves in a field not far from the remains of their house. One of the girls lay there with a broken back and now faces major surgery.

Another of the three girls is in a coma with severe brain damage and more than likely will never wake up.

And the third will never wake up again at all. She was still holding her doll when they found her body.

Relatives spoke for the parents on the news because I imagine the last thing on the parents’ mind right now is what the See HODGE, page A5

appy Christmas everyone. Can you believe it is here?

Another year gone by and another day we each draw closer to heaven.

I’m sharing something a little different with you each today, a piece of my past that I hope may serve you and yours.

One piece of Gods puzzle that I adore is the gathering of people and family at a table. Food to nourish our bodies and fellowship to nourish the soul. The reminder of breaking bread, that Jesus himself will fill us up.

I grew up always gathering around a table somewhere, but especially at Christmas.

We gathered much and often around our table or seated at counter tops or a fireplace hearth. We cooked a lot and ate a lot, and all these actions kept us together.

This is the heart of tradition; the act of doing something, over and over again, so that what is embedded in our hearts will not be forgotten.

What traditions do you carry on today? Or perhaps what do you remember from your childhood that you still hold dear in your heart?

One of my favorite traditions from my childhood was our family making the long, dark drive out to our church on Christmas Eve in rural Tuskegee.

My mother would serve us a lovely dinner and we would load up way past dark, for the 30-minute drive, to sing and light candles for Christ.

I remember it being quiet and kind and humble. All the hugs from the lovely old ladies at church and all the smiles, the faces of Christmas. The best part was always the candles, the beauty of the light filling the night sanctuary, the passing of the light of Christ and carrying it into the dark, country night.

Besides church Christmas candles, delicious food and drinks were a tradition in our home.

My mother would spend hours with us making peanut butter balls covered in chocolate.

Of which we would drive around Auburn and deliver to our local businesses, like the pediatrician and even our car mechanic.

My mother also made a Shrimp Ball, a tasty dip for crackers that was always a highlight for Christmas company, but my favorite taste of all the season was my mothers Plum Cake.

Baked in a bunt, it was a beautiful shade of plum purple, and the aroma of clove and cinnamon could not keep me away.

Still today, having a Plum Cake on my counter at Christmas is a must.

On this Christmas

Eve Eve, I’m sharing with you our Plum Cake along with a prayer; a Christmas blessing that your hearts will be filled with the light of Christ to carry us into the new year.

PLUM CAKE: 2 cups sugar 3 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 1 teaspoon each cinnamon & clove 2 baby food plums 2 cups self-rising flour.

Blend well and pour into a greased bundt pan.

Bake 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes.

Icing: Juice of 1 lemon mixed with 1 cup of powdered sugar When cake has cooled, flip out of bundt pan and drizzle with icing.

CHRISTMAS BLESSING: May the Lord hold you each, this fine Christmas Day, May He bring peace and hope and show you the way.

May the light in your heart, shine for others to see, Just as stars high above, shine for you and for me.

For a Son was laid down, a life given to us, Who dwelt and felt the world, but returned not as dust.

The heart of God is real, it is true, And His Love carries on Earth in me and in you.

Shine forever dear friends, shine bright as the sun, So that Christ will never go dim, till His kingdom come.

Bill Schwenk and Robbie Hughes once were ranger roommates. Now, the two co-own a barbecue business, “Bill and Robbie’s Excellent BBQ Adventure.”

In October 2020, Schwenk was newly out of the military and Hughes was out of work. Hughes randomly called up Schwenk one autumn afternoon and said, “What are we doing tomorrow? I quit my job.”

Before the call, Schwenk had gone to appraise a house in his area. At the house, Schwenk was met with a kind mother, a disabled father and a son on the Autism spectrum.

The mother expressed that she was heartbroken that they could not visit their grandparents up north that holiday season, due to COVID. Perhaps the most heartbroken member, however, was her son. Each year, his grandparents hung up Christmas lights, which was his favorite thing to look forward to.

Without hesitating, Schwenk offered to hang up the lights for them, accompanied

by Hughes. After the lights had been strung, Hughes hurried to find Schwenk. The son was outside, marveling with “extreme joy,” as Schwenk put it, at his new lights.

“Did you see that?”

Hughes asked, with tears in his eyes.

“We can’t charge them for this. That was enough.”

Thus, the “Excellent Christmas Adventure” was born. Following its creation, Hughes came up with a name for their barbecue food truck business, as well: “Bill and Robbie’s Excellent BBQ Adventure.”

Hughes was proud of the name; Schwenk found it ridiculous.

Nevertheless, it stuck.

“Everybody loves it,” Schwenk said.

For Bill and Robbie’s Excellent BBQ Adventure, Schwenk handles the business and Hughes handles the barbecue. Schwenk said that Hughes can make anything taste good. Hughes’ love for cooking — particularly barbecue — comes from the backyard, and his talent comes from his mom.

This year, the business has been serving veterans in the community, as well as providing meals for the East Alabama Food Bank and a local Down Syndrome fundraiser.

Through partnerships with local Autism and Down Syndrome foundations, the Excellent Christmas Adventure has been able to gear up for its second year.

“The autism/down syndrome community is so much more vast than I anticipated,” Schwenk said.

Additionally, Schwenk said that he

has noticed just how tight-knit of a community the special needs groups are here in Auburn-Opelika. Though Schwenk himself has few familial connections to those with disabilities, both he and Hughes have had their hearts touched by the need they see in Auburn-Lee County.

Schwenk said that in “God’s economy,” everyone is created equal.

“I don’t think God sees disabilities,” Schwenk said. “The way I see it is that my problems just aren’t for everybody to see. I could be labeled with three other things. But I hide them … But because theirs are on display for everybody, we deem them to have disabilities.”

For the month of December, the Excellent Christmas Adventure is dedicated to working with local organizations focused on people with disabilities to identify needs in the community. Schwenk and Hughes have been primarily focused on hanging up lights to bring visual joy to those they are serving.

“The point is to make that person feel loved, even for a moment,” Schwenk said.

While their target audience remains veterans and those on the spectrum, or with Down Syndrome, Schwenk said that he does not want to “pigeon-hole” their ministry or “put God on a shelf.” Schwenk and Hughes are dedicated to serving anyone who needs it.

Any money will go toward buying lights, as well as helping pay for the power bill of the houses they decorate. Anything less than this would be “short-sighted,” Schwenk said.

Currently, the group is working on constructing a permanent foundation to gather funds for the Excellent Christmas Adventure, to meet the needs of the community. The Foundation is named after Kim Epperson, former children’s minister at Trinity Church in Auburn. Epperson recently passed away due to COVID and health complications.

Schwenk said naming the foundation after her felt right. The love that Excellent Christmas Adventure strives to show to the community is a reflection of the same affection that Epperson bestowed upon the children she cared for.

rest of us in the world think of their story.

I imagine they are struggling to merely survive each second as it comes. I imagine the grief they are buried in must weigh more than any human being should ever have to bear.

The family’s neighbor said that when the tornado touched down on their street there was no noise at all. Only a deathly quiet.

Looking at the photo that’s still on the screen of three precious girls, I can almost hear the giggles that must have echoed in that room as they crowded together, waiting out the storm and ready to run free in the house once again. I bet they talked about Christmas and their friends and what was for dinner. I can almost hear their mom saying, “Only a few more minutes” and their dad reassuring them “Everything’s fine.”

But then it all got quiet. And now their house will forever be the worst kind of quiet there is — that empty quiet when someone who once talked and laughed and sighed and sang is no longer there to make a sound at all.

And I am so ashamed. How dare I resent one noisy moment I have when

I am so abundantly blessed with sounds I love and the people who make them. I’ve been in a house where the silence of loss is a palpable thing, and I should have learned the lesson of gratitude better than I have.

So today, and every day that is left of this year, I will not turn down the volume on the television or the radio or life itself.

I will soak it all in, because every second I’m breathing and listening is a gift. An irreplaceable gift, that you can never replenish.

The dogs are at the front window barking at the neighbor’s inflatable snowman.

The brakes on the garbage truck at the corner are squealing.

The alarm on my phone is ringing.

WHATLEY The coffee maker is beeping because it’s low on water. And my phone just bleeped as my last dollar drained out of the bank.

And I’m smiling through my tears. It’s a Jimmy Stewart — Wonderful Life kind of moment.

“What’s wrong?”

Tim asks.

“Absolutely nothing,” I answer.

He smiles and shakes his head at me. He’s wise enough to know the ways a woman’s mind works will forever be a mystery.

Since I still haven’t won the lottery, I will head to work. And maybe I’ll even sing along with Englebert Humperdinck.

s Christmas approaches this week, the days get busier with last minute shopping, wrapping gifts and getting ready for breakfast and dinner on Christmas Day. Plan an easy supper with soup, sandwiches and cookies on Christmas Eve. Serve hot chocolate as the story of Jesus’s birth is read, and send little ones to bed with the true meaning of the celebration.

While you are in the kitchen cooking this week, double a few recipes to have extra to share as last minute gifts. Cheese straws are a favorite with almost everyone. Mary Alsobrook Carl had a cottage business called The Last

Straw for many years.

In one year she would use over 400 pounds of cheese in making the crispy straws, as their popularity grew.

After she went to work full time and gave up the cottage business, she graciously shared her famous recipe. If you don’t have a cookie press for making cheese straws, you can roll the dough into logs, chill, then slice and bake following directions. Wafers will take about ten minutes or a little longer for desired crispness.

Mary’s recipe for the cheese straws came from Mrs. H. F. Finch, known to Mary as “Miss Dollie Mae.” While Mary knew Mrs. Finch, she did not discover her

cheese straw recipe until later when she found it in an old cookbook at her mother’s home.

Over the years, Mary perfected the method.

When making cheese straws, be sure to grate the cheese and not use packaged shredded cheese. The packaged cheese has an ingredient to prevent the cheese from sticking together that doesn’t work well in making cheese straws or wafers.

Hunters Can Help Fight Hunger The Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association is urging hunters to donate to Hunters Helping the Hungry during the current deer season.

A program coordinated by the Alabama Conservation and Natural Resources Foundation, the Hunters Helping the Hungry program began in 1999 and has donated about half a million pounds of venison to food banks across the state since the program’s inception.

“We want to encourage sportsmen and women to utilize this free program to support the areas in which they go afield,” said Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association Director Pam Swanner.

“Providing healthy, organic and ground venison to families in need in Alabama, and especially in the Black Belt, is a powerful way to give back to our communities.”

Donated deer meat is processed into ground venison, packaged and frozen, ready to be distributed to the food banks. There is no

charge to the hunter for processing the deer.

Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Chris Blankenship, who chairs the ACNR Foundation, is a believer in the HHH program.

“While this program has been a mainstay for wildlife managers for more than two decades, it also fills a critical need in communities all over the state,” Blankenship said. “We’re proud to fund this program and we’re especially grateful to the participating

processors. As I’ve said in the past, this is such a rewarding way for hunters to help manage our abundant deer population and take advantage of Alabama’s months-long season and liberal bag limits to provide meat for their own freezer and also help families in need.

“All a hunter has to do is drop the deer off at one of the participating processors with a Game Check confirmation number, and the processor takes care of the deer and sends it to See HUNTER, page A8

Children will enjoy helping, and let them go with you to deliver the cookies. It is a good way to teach them to think of others and share.

If you have to work on Christmas Eve, getting ready for the big day can be more difficult. When I worked full time as an editor

at a newspaper, Christmas Eve was always a busy day. Since the Christmas Day paper was one of the largest of the year, there were articles to finish and more pages than usual to layout. When I got home, I was generally exhausted, and there were gifts to wrap and lots of cooking.

We almost always had out-of-town company from Don’s family coming in on Christmas Eve, which meant serving a nice meal. I remember one

year after getting home from work, making a shrimp stroganoff that I thought would be an elegant supper. When I served it, a new spouse for one of our guests said he couldn’t eat shrimp. I had to quickly scramble to make another dish too.

Over the years, I have learned that Christmas Eve calls for an easy supper, such as soup and sandwiches with a plate of cookies for dessert. If you need an See CIPPERLY, page A10

Located along a popular route for Auburn students and transits alike, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, or the Jule, brings the entire community together to experience visual arts.

Open since 2003, the museum provides a creative perspective that can be influential, especially in a child’s school years.

The Jule is all about innovation and encouraging collaboration among students, faculty and local citizens. Because the university is a public research institution that takes pride in object-based research, the Jule embodies this motto. The museum allows its guests to learn about different artistic modes while developing their cultural sense and relationships with one another.

Charlotte Hendrix is the Jule’s senior communications and marketing specialist. She said that, at its core, the museum showcases diversity, community and accessibility.

“We are often working on the next exhibition, as well as public programs that will engage the public,” Hendrix said. “There is also time spent dedicated to the exhibitions on-view and the accompanying engagements.”

There are three exhibitions currently on view through Jan. 2: “Anila Quayyum

Agha: The Weight of Black,” “The Joy Fields” and “Outside In.” The “Outside In” exhibit features the Auburn’s Museum of Natural History seasonal specimens along with some of the Louise Hauss and David Brent Miller Audobon Collection selections. The specimens are showcased next to their corresponding artwork representations that quite accurately display the 19th-century components.

Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar. Thanks to the Good Lord and my sweet family and friends who prayed for me, my heart cath was normal. Since I had to take it easy for a few days after the procedure, Mike and I waited several days to visit Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar. The plan was to be there when it opened at 11 a.m.

However, that morning, we got off to a late start, eating breakfast while watching not just a Leave it to Beaver episode but also a classic one from The Andy Griffith Show. Have I mentioned that retirement is great?

Anyway, instead of getting to Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar at 11 a.m., we arrived at 12:10 p.m.

Oh, my. There was quite a crowd; we had to park next door.

Thankfully, there were two lines for orders.

Also, we didn’t wait long at all, so kudos to Mrs. Story’s employees for working so hard.

While we were in line, I chatted with several other customers. Miss Ora, a sweet lady, who knew Miss Cora, said she had been coming to Mrs. Story’s for 20 years.

“I was so sad when it closed,” she said. Also,

ast month, many people in Lee County were filled with joy. Why? Because Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar, Opelika’s iconic and much-loved hot dog/ ice cream restaurant reopened after having closed for several months because of COVID-19.

Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar, which will celebrate its 70th birthday in May 2022, announced its closing late last August. People took to social media to express their dismay and sorrow.

As I’ve previously mentioned, my sister-inlaw Sandi was born and raised in Opelika, graduating from Beauregard High School. She and my much older brother Mike now live in Texas, and Sandi works at a college. However, she will retire in May 2022, joining her husband in the ranks of the retired.

She was particularly distraught over Mrs. Story’s closing. Sandi has been a big fan of Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar for as long as she can

remember. She told me, “If I could, I would come and work at Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar for free.”

She was elated when I told her that Mrs. Story’s had reopened. She, my brother, my niece Brittney and my nephew Tyler will make a run to Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar when they come home to Alabama for Christmas, as they always do.

I’m so delighted that this tradition will continue for them.

On the very same day that Mrs. Story’s grand reopening occurred, I was facing a scary procedure: a heart catheter at East Alabama Medical Center, our marvelous hospital in Lee County. Now, for 30 years, I faced 3,000 to 4,000 middle school students, with God’s help, of course.

But I am a big coward when it comes to serious medical procedures, especially one involving my heart. You only get one heart, after all.

While I was waiting in my room at EAMC with Mike, we heard a nurse say, “Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar reopens today.” This proclamation was met with a chorus of: “Yeas, hurrahs and all rights!”

Mike stepped out and told the nurses that we go to church at Central Baptist of Opelika with Mrs. Cora Reames, Mrs. Story’s granddaughter.

Miss Cora bought the business from Mrs. Story and ran the restaurant in the 1970s. Her grandson now owns and runs

Susan, who is from Opelika, said that she had been coming to Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar for almost 60 years. “Oh, I love this place. Love it!” she said.

Mike and I happily took home our two short chili cheese dogs and chips. I took my first bite. Oh, my two times.

My only regret was that I hadn’t ordered a FOOTLONG. I was sad when I finished it.

Mike loved his, too. He used to come with his parents from West Point,

Georgia, to Mrs. Story’s while he was in single digits. The then Georgia boy knew a great hot dog when he tasted one.

Besides outstanding chili cheese dogs, Miss Cora told me that their milkshakes are made one at a time to order and are the BEST in the area. I want one next time. And there will DEFINITELY be a next time, the Good Lord willing. Miss Cora Reames, this review was for you, with much love.

“Many schoolaged children begin a lifelong love of museums by visiting as a part of a program or tour,” Hendrix said.

“I’ve also observed people enjoying the grounds for recreation and relaxation, as there are several outdoor sculptures on view.”

The Jule provides children and university students with a level of art exposure that goes beyond classroom learning.

This museum was one of the first in Alabama to reopen with limited occupancy in August 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To facilitate a safer start, the Jule implemented guidelines from Auburn’s “A

Healthier U,” which is the university’s way to combat the virus while keeping the school open. For example, on Aug. 3, Auburn reinstalled the indoor mask policy, regardless of vaccination status. The Jule followed suit.

Hendrix said that visiting the museum is a suitable activity for many, partly because one can go alone or in a small group. Therefore, museum guests can still visit the museum while keeping in mind social distancing and other health precautions.

The Jule will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2023 with celebrations, including bringing back the juried outdoor sculpture exhibition. While

observing all that the museum has to offer, guests can stop by to browse in the museum shop while there. The shop provides unique gifts that are curated from museum collections and exhibits. Works are affordable and created by local and regional artists.

Purchases in the shop go toward developing the museum’s program. Museum guests, as well as Auburn University students, faculty and staff, [can] receive discounts on the regular merchandise also. The Jule accepts charitable gifts and donations. There is no fee for admission to the museum. However, those who donate can help preserve the

museum’s collections, as well as contribute to the engagement opportunities held with school-aged children and college students.

The Jule is located at 901 S. College St. and is available via the Tiger Transit using the Fine Arts line.

The museum’s hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an extension until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. It is closed every Monday. The wide-ranging hours give both students and community members flexibility in visiting the museum at their own convenience.

A pot of potato soup with assorted toppings will appeal to all ages.

In the recipes, there are two options. One recipe is a classic version that can be prepared in a slow cooker or on the stove top. Lorna Roberts’ recipe is a quick and easy version using

Hot Chocolate ½ cup sugar ¼ cup cocoa (Hershey’s) Pinch of salt, optional 1/3 cup hot water 4 cups milk 1 tsp. vanilla In a saucepan, mix sugar, cocoa and salt (if using); stir in water.

Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly and boil for two minutes.

Stir in milk and heat until hot, but do not boil.

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Makes about six servings.

Hot Dark Chocolate Prepare as above using dark cocoa and add more sugar if needed.

Hot White Chocolate 4 cups milk (can use 1 cup half and half for 1 cup of the milk) 1 cup quality white chocolate chips or chopped bar 1 tsp. vanilla Place milk, white chocolate and vanilla in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir or whisk constantly until chocolate is melted. Do not boil. Serve warm.

Hot Mocha White Chocolate 12 oz. quality white chocolate 1½ cups half and half or milk 6 cups hot coffee, regular or decaf Whipped Cream Combine white chocolate and half and half or milk in saucepan; heat while stirring, until melted. Pour mixture into hot coffee. Top with whipped cream. Serves six to eight.

2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. cayenne red pepper 1 stick salted butter, softened 1 lb. extra sharp cheese, grated Combine flour, salt and red pepper in a

frozen hash brown potatoes. Both versions are delicious served with assorted toppings.

If you can find ripe avocadoes, the bacon and avocado sandwiches are easy to assemble and tasty. You can also add bacon and avocado in a grilled cheese sandwich. If you have a picky family with everyone wanting something different, then arrange a sandwich bar for everyone making their own.

A favorite at our

house is Judy’s Curried Cheese Spread on English Muffins. I always think of Judy Gullage, who was an amazing, sweet lady, when I make these, as she would serve them at meetings in her home for the Muses Study Club.

If your family likes pimento cheese sandwiches, offer it as a rolled sandwich or spread melted butter on the outside and toast them. One afternoon when I need a quick

appetizer, all I had was pimento cheese and bread and decided to spread the cheese on a slice of bread and roll it up, then spread with melted butter and bake them. Since they were popular, I make them now to serve with tomato soup.

Look over the recipes and see which recipes work best for your family. Make it a tradition to read the Christmas story after supper and serve warm cups of hot chocolate. You can

arrange a hot chocolate bar with candy canes, peppermint sticks, mini marshmallows and whipped cream. Some people like to include chocolate chips and caramels, but keep it simple for children, not adding too much chocolate, which can keep them awake.

As you prepare for Christmas this week, maybe your house isn’t decorated like those in glossy magazines, and there is not much under the tree, but you

food processor. Add softened butter. Add grated cheese a little at a time. Allow dough to mix thoroughly in the food processor. Place cheese dough into cookie press with star tip. Press onto a lightly greased cookie sheet.

Cut into desired length.

Bake at 350 until crisp.

4 cups pecans, whole or chopped ½ cup butter, melted Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Beat egg whites until foamy; gradually add sugar.

Beat until stiff peaks form. Fold in pecans.

Pour butter into a rimmed cookie sheet.

Spread pecan mixture over butter.

Bake 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Store in airtight container.

chocolate 2 tsp. shortening Gradually add sugar to softened butter with a mixer. When creamy, add egg yolk, vanilla and flour. Beat well. Make dough into balls and put on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten dough into round circles and press nuts into tops of cookies. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 13 minutes.

While cookies cool, place shortening and chocolate into a double broiler, stirring constantly until melted.

Spread chocolate mixture over the top of the cookies. Let cool until chocolate hardens. Makes 2 dozen cookies.

chopped ½ lb. thinly sliced Havarti cheese (I shredded mine) Slice party rolls in half, horizontally. (Do not separate rolls.)

Spread top half of rolls with preservers, and sprinkle with walnuts. Spread bottom half of rolls with mustard/mayonnaise blend.

Top bottom half with roast beef and cheese.

Cover with top half.

Cover with foil.

Can freeze at this point. To heat, let thaw overnight in refrigerator. If cooking immediately, cook at 325 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

Let sit for a few minutes before cutting into individual rolls.

3 cups Honey Corn Chex cereal 3 cups Rice Chex cereal 3 cups Wheat Chex cereal 1 cup mixed nuts or pecans 1 cup Bugles 12 Tbsp. butter or margarine 4 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1½ tsp. seasoned salt ¾ tsp. minced garlic ½ tsp. onion powder 1 Tbsp. Thai Chili Roasted Garlic Dipping Sauce from Wild Thyme, optional Melt butter and mix with all ingredients and pour over cereal and nuts. Pour into a large rectangle metal pan and cook at 250 degrees for 1 hour, mixing every 15 minutes.

HOUSE SPECIALTY CHEX MIX WITH NUTS

Ellen Canada takes this delicious mix to family gets together for the holidays. It is also a popular gift for friends.

6 Tbsp. butter or margarine 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 3 tsp. Jane’s Krazy salt (seasoned salt) ¼ tsp. ground red pepper ¼ tsp. chili powder 2-3 dashes Tabasco sauce (to taste) 3 cups each: Wheat Chex, Corn Chex and Rice Chex 1 ½ cups mixed nuts Melt butter in large roasting pan in 250-degree oven. Stir in seasonings until mixed well. Then add cereals and mixed nuts.

Bake at 250 degrees for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Spread out to cool on paper towels. Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks (it probably won’t last that long).

CANDIED PECANS 2 egg whites 1 cup sugar

EASY BUTTERSCOTCH PECAN LOG

Goes together quickly and nice for gifts.

12 oz. pkg. butterscotch flavored morsels 2/3 cup sweetened condensed milk 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans Pecan halves Melt butterscotch morsels; stir in sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and chopped pecans. Chill until firm enough to shape.

Roll into one large or two smaller logs. Press pecan halves into sides to completely cover.

Wrap in plastic wrap.

Chill until ready to slice and serve.

SNOW COVERED ALMOND CRESCENTS WITH OATMEAL

Janet Barlett 1 cup butter, room temperature ¾ cup confectioners’ sugar ½ tsp. vanilla 2 cup plain flour ¼ tsp. salt (optional) 1 cup oatmeal ½ cup finely chopped almond or pecans Extra confectioners’ sugar Heat oven to 325 degrees. Beat butter, sugar and vanilla. Add flour and salt and mix well until blended. Stir in oats and nuts. Use a level measuring tablespoon and shape into crescents.

Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 14 to 17 minutes or until bottoms are light golden brown. Cool on wire rack. Sift confectioners’ sugar over warm cookies.

NUTTY TURTLE COOKIES

½ cup sugar ¾ cup butter 1 egg yolk 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1½ cup all-purpose flour 11 oz. can mixed nuts or chopped pecans 1½ cups semisweet

Lucinda Samford Cannon 1 stick butter 12 oz. chocolate chips 1 tsp. vanilla 12 oz. colored mini marshmallows 1 cup pecans, minced Melt butter in large saucepan and add chocolate chips. Stir constantly over low heat. Add vanilla, pecans and marshmallows. Mix well. Place on wax paper. Makes 4 logs. Refrigerate.

When ready to serve, slice rolls about ¼-inch thick.

CURRIED CHEESE AND OLIVE TOPPED ENGLISH MUFFINS

Judy Gullage was a gracious lady and would made these for the Muses Study Club.

3 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese 1 can black olives, sliced 1 cup mayonnaise ½ cup green onions, chopped 1 tsp. curry powder English muffins, split and toasted Blend first five ingredients together.

Can be made ahead.

Pile cheese spread on toasted English muffins halves. Broil until cheese melts. Cut into quarters.

ROAST BEEF ROLLS

Pam Hope ½ cup finely chopped walnuts, toasted 2 pkgs. party dinner rolls 2/3 cup peach preserves ½ cup mustard/mayonnaise blend (Dijonnaise) ¾ lb. deli roast beef,

2 avocados Lime or lemon juice 4 oz cream cheese 8 slices fried bacon Mayonnaise 8 slices sandwich or sourdough bread Salt and pepper to taste Mash 1 avocado and mix with softened cream cheese, a small amount of mayonnaise and salt and pepper to taste.

Slice other avocado and squeeze a little lime or lemon juice to prevent darkening.

Spread avocado mixture on sandwich bread, then add bacon and sliced avocado.

TOASTED ROLLED CHEDDAR PECAN SANDWICHES

You can also pimento cheese spread to make these rolled sandwiches.

1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted, or small jar pimentos, drained 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 Tbsp. mayonnaise or more Thin sandwich bread, white or wheat Butter, melted Combine first three ingredients.

Remove crust from thin sliced bread. Flatten with a rolling pin.

Spread 2 teaspoon of filling on bread slice; roll up. Spread with melted butter. Rim edges of rolls if needed and cut in halves.

Chill or place on baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly brown. Cam freeze ahead.

HAM , SHRIMP OR CHICKEN CHOWDER

Mary Ann Swanson 2 cups diced potatoes ½ cup sliced carrots ½ cup sliced celery ¼ cup or more chopped onion 1½ tsp. salt Two 14 oz. cans chicken stock or water ¼ cup butter or margarine ¼ cup flour 2 cups milk 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese 1 lb. can (2 cups) cream style corn 2-3 cups diced ham, cooked chicken or 1 lb. shrimp Combine potatoes, carrots, celery, onion and salt; cover with chicken broth or just enough water to cover, about 2 cups.

Cover, bring to a boil and simmer 10 minutes; do not drain.

In a large pan, melt butter; add flour and blend.

Stir in milk and cook until mixture comes to a boil, stirring constantly until mixture is thickened. Add cheese, corn and potato mixture with liquid.

Stir in ham or shrimp; cook until well heated.

Can use cooked or fresh shrimp. If using fresh, cook three minutes until shrimp are pink.

SHRIMP BISQUE PATRICIA FOX 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 lb. raw shrimp, shelled and deveined 4 Roma tomatoes, chopped 4 cups seafood or chicken stock ½ cup fine breadcrumbs 1/2 cup or more heavy cream 2 Tbsp. dry sherry Salt to taste Pinch of cayenne pepper 3 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh parsley Melt butter in skillet; add onion and garlic. Sauté until slightly softened.

Add tomatoes and stock; cook until tomatoes are softened, about 5 minutes.

Set aside half of shrimp.

Add remaining shrimp to broth with breadcrumbs.

Cook over medium heat until shrimp turn pink, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Puree soup mixture in processor or blender until smooth.

Return mixture to pan; add cream, sherry, salt and pepper.

Slice reserved shrimp into one-inch pieces. Just before serving; add shrimp and cook until pink. Garnish with parsley. Makes 6 to 8 servings. Better prepared a day or two ahead.

CIPPERLY RECIPES >> STOVETOP OR SLOW COOKER POTATO SOUP WITH TOPPINGS

Adapted from Pat Wingfield’s recipe 6 large russet potatoes (can use Yukon Gold) , peeled, cut into ½-inch pieces 1 large onion, chopped Three 14 oz. cans chicken broth 3 tsp. minced garlic 2½ tsp. salt Pepper to taste 1/3 cup butter 1 cup (4 oz.) sharp Cheddar, grated 1 cup heavy cream or half & half Toppings: sour cream, grated cheddar cheese, chives, crumbled cooked bacon or chopped ham Stovetop Version: Combine potatoes, onion, chicken broth, garlic, salt and pepper in large Dutch oven pan.

Bring to a boil; simmer until potatoes are tender.

Coarsely mash mixture; stir in butter, cheese and heavy cream.

Serve toppings of choice.

Makes 8 servings.

Slow Cooker Version: Combine potatoes, onion, chicken broth, butter, salt and pepper in five qt. slow cooker.

Cover and cook on high for four hours or on low for eight hours. Coarsely mash mixture; stir in cheese and heavy cream.

Serve topped with dollop of sour cream, crumbled cooked bacon and grated sharp cheddar.

EASY POTATO SOUP WITH ASSORTED TOPPINGS

Lorna Roberts Top with shredded cheddar, diced ham or bacon, if desired.

32 oz. frozen diced hash browns, divided 1 cup chopped onion 1 can chicken broth 2 cups water 1 can cream of celery soup (undiluted) 1 can cream of chicken soup (undiluted) 2 cups milk Combine half of the hash browns with the onion, chicken broth and water in a Dutch oven; bring to a boil.

Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes. Add remaining hash browns and simmer for an additional 15 minutes.

Stir in soups and milk; heat thoroughly.

Makes 2 quarts.

Serves six.

EASY TOMATO BASIL SOUP

2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 small yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 cans Italian style diced tomatoes 4 cups low sodium chicken or vegetable broth 2 tsp. dried basil (can use fresh) 1 cup half and half Heat oil over medium heat and cook onions until tender.

Add in garlic. Add the tomatoes and broth and simmer for 15 to

20 minutes. Using an immersion blender, puree the soup, if desired.

Before serving add in the half and half and basil.

TOASTED COCONUT MACAROONS WITH CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE

Janet Morehouse 7 oz. pkg. coconut flakes 1 cup chopped pecans, optional 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk 1 tsp. vanilla 30 saltine crackers, finely crushed 3 egg whites 2 squares semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread coconut and pecans into 15 by 10-inch baking pan.

Bake 10 minutes or until lightly toasted, stirring frequently. Cool.

Combine milk and vanilla in large bowl.

Add coconut mixture and cracker crumbs; mix well.

Beat egg whites in small bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Add to coconut mixture; stir gently until well blended.

Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of the coconut mixture, 2 inches apart, on lightly greased baking sheets.

Bake 12 to 14 minutes or until edges of cookies are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

Drizzle melted chocolate over cookies.

Place in wax paper-lined shallow pan. Refrigerate until chocolate is set.

Makes 3 dozen.

A Little Debbie Christmas making it. I asked if there was anything we could do and he threw out, “Not unless you know where I could get some little Debbie Christmas Cakes.

I told them what I talked to her husband to get an update on I was looking for and her and how they were they laughed and said

something to the effect of, “Yeah, you and everyone else.” I figured I had nothing to lose, so I told them the story of the Covidstricken, school teaching, young mother and one of them looked at me and said, “C’mon, let’s go out and see if we have anything in the truck.”

As we walked toward the truck, he told me he didn’t know if there would be anything in there or not. They were such a hot item that they got rid of them as soon as they got them. I told him I understood and thanked him for taking time out to check it out. I appreciated how busy they were this time of year and the favor he was doing me.

When we got to the truck, he handed me a plastic bag and said, “Hold this open.” He rummaged around and before long produced a box of — Little Debbie Christmas

Cakes! He plopped them in the bag. I was ecstatic!

“Thank you so much! I think this is really going to lift her spirits,” I said.

“Hold on,” he said, “Let’s see if we have any more.”

He did.

Another box was dropped into the bag. And then another, and another.

When he was done, I had five boxes of Little Debbie Christmas Cakes for our friend. I had started out thinking if I could find one it would be nothing short of a spectacular success and now, I had five. I was overwhelmed and thanked him over and over again.

My friend met us outside his house. We had brought a meal for them.

I told him I didn’t get a box of Little Debbie Christmas Cakes. He was understanding and said he hadn’t expected me to find any.

Then I told him I got

five boxes and he looked at me like I was crazy.

I produced the bag and told him the story.

I never got the name of the man who gave me the five boxes of Little Debbie Christmas Cakes.

I should have, but I was too carried away by the moment. Anyway, I seriously doubt that he follows my site or reads my column in The Observer, but in the small chance he does — or someone who knows him does, he needs to know that he absolutely made someone’s day by what he did. And as long as I’m alive, I’ll be telling the story of the Little Debbie Christmas. For as Jesus came into this world to teach and show us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

If You Say So

uke tells about a time when Jesus was standing by the lake teaching the word God to a crowd of people who were eagerly listening. At the water’s edge were two boats left there by fishermen who were washing their nets.

One of the boats belonged to Simon. Jesus got in it and asked Simon Peter to

move it out a little from the shore. Then Jesus began teaching the people from the boat.

When Jesus had finished teaching, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”

Simon’s response is somewhat surprising. He and his friends had fished all night and caught nothing. They were tired and disappointed. But instead of rebuffing Jesus, Simon replied, “Master, we worked hard all night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”

And when they did, they caught so many fish their nets began to break,

and the boat was soon so full of fish that it began to sink.

In that story, the phrase, “if you say so,” catches my attention. Long ago, I began to realize that my maturity as a Christian depended upon doing what Jesus says to do. He made that clear when he said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

I must confess that I am a bit like Simon when I consider some of the things Jesus said to do. Simon showed no enthusiasm about letting the nets down again. And

I find myself responding to Jesus much like Simon did, “I’m not sure about that Lord, but if you say so, I will do it.”

There have been situations when it seemed impossible not to worry.

But I heard Jesus saying, “Walter, do not worry; seek first my kingdom and my righteousness and I will provide all the things you need.” That’s when I said, “If you say so, Lord.” And repeatedly, He has kept His promise.

The demands of Jesus are not easy to meet. For example, when he says, “Rejoice and be glad when people insult you, persecute you and falsely

say all kinds of evil against you,” again I find myself saying, “If you say so, Lord.” And I have the same response when Jesus says, “If you expect your heavenly Father to forgive your sins, you must forgive those who sin against you.” I know better than to say, “But Lord, you don’t understand!” So I muster up the strength to say again, “If you say so, Lord.”

Like most people, I am fond of earth’s treasures.

I like nice clothes, a nice car, nice books, a comfortable recliner and things that remind me of my Auburn connection, so I wince when Jesus says, “Walter, do

not store up treasures on earth but store up treasures in heaven.” But since He has taught me that true life is not found in material possessions, I am able to say, “If you say so, Lord.”

Simon was amazed at what happened when he put aside his disappointment and said, “If you say so, Lord.” And like Simon, I too am constantly thrilled by what Jesus does when I do my best to do what He says do.

Though I am sometimes staggered by the tough things Jesus says do, I know my best response is to stop doubting, and just do it! Because He said so!

To the nurses and staff of the EAMC Spencer Cancer Center, Dr. Linda Farmer, Dr. Edith Graves (who answered the call back to duty) - please all know that we are forever grateful for your kindness, efforts, and skills. We also want to thank two of Mandy’s close friends, Angela Jolley RN, and Marty Brice RN, who lovingly gave of their time and nursing skills to help us care for Mandy when our need was greatest. The Grace of God is evident, and we are now certain that Angels do walk among us.

Visitation and memorial service was held Dec. 22, 2021, with visitation from 4 to 6 p.m., and memorial service at 6 p.m., at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home located at 1500 Frederick Road. in Opelika.

OBITUARIES PEGGY LEWIS CLARK Peggy Lewis Clark, 72, of Opelika, passed away Dec. 15, 2021, at her residence. Mrs. Clark was born Aug. 23, 1949, to James and Peggy Lewis. A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, at Solstice Club House located at 1960 Solstice Circle in Opelika. Visitation began one hour before the service.

Mrs. Clark is survived by her children: Sheryle May (Bill), Patricia Clark Sims, Curtis Haralson, Randy Lewis Clark (April), Dwight Jay Clark (Susanne); ten grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; siblings: Jackie Lewis (Bonita) and Kathryn Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dwight J.

Clark.

Mrs. Clark was a native of Lee County where she has lived all of her life and was retired from Burke’s Outlet.

Lillian is survived by her children, Terrisa Griffin Liner (Scott), Malissa Smith (Michael), and Joe Harrelson (Donna); grandchildren, Magen Nicole Floyd (Matt), Falecia Marie Cannon (Mitch), Kelsey Paige Bryant (Travis), Wyatt Jones (Sammy), Blake Harrelson (Morgan), Maddy Smith and Jagger Smith; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Cannon and Blake Leigh Cannon; sister-in-law, Barbara Chadwick, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

A funeral service was held on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, in the Chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Dr. Rusty Sowell officiating.

Interment followed at Watoola Cemetery.

––––––– ROGER DALE BELL Roger slipped peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Dec. 15, 2021, at his home following a brief illness.

He was born in Opelika on Oct. 24, 1950, to his parents Willie Eugene and Thelma Essman Bell.

Roger joined Trinity United Methodist Church as a child. As an adult, he served there in many capacities including choir membership, chef to special events and Wednesday night dinners, historian assistance and a loyal attendant and supporter.

He believed in the power of prayer and devotion to his beliefs.

He was a member of the Opelika Historical Preservation Society for more than 25 years as an active member, most recently serving as vice president in charge of the Brownfield House.

For almost 30 years, Roger served as a volunteer for the Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour. From 201319, he served as director of the tour, securing volunteer workers and battling weather conditions to make this prosperous event a great tourism success in the state of Alabama.

Roger was proud to be a 1976 graduate of Auburn University College of Business where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) fraternity where he served as a volunteer for more than 40 years.

AMANDA (MANDY) AARON CORDI Amanda (Mandy) Aaron Cordi, was set free from the confines of her earthly body and passed peacefully at home, held close by her son and husband, to join the saints who’ve gone before us.

Mandy was born in Huntsville, Alabama, but fondly called Arab, Alabama, her childhood home. She graduated from Chambers Academy, and Southern Union as a registered nurse.

Mandy worked most of her life at East Alabama Medical Center, working her way up from a respiratory therapy technician to a RN in 1991. Although the work is challenging and difficult, Mandy loved nursing and did her best to care for her patients as she would want to be cared for. Many of her dearest and closest friends were her fellow health care workers at EAMC. Mandy also cherished the role of mom and all the joys the Lord bestows from that blessing.

The following five wrestlers scored points: DeAndre Manora, Chris Cannon, Heidi Pertala, Will Smith, Andray Vann and Vin Schwenk.

In the nightcap, the Tigers slipped by the Bulldogs 45-33.

The following Opelika wrestlers pinned their opponents: 126lb, Brayden Wilson; 132lb, Micah Smith; 145lb, Brady Campbell; and 152lb, Logan Sheridan. Kyle Epperson, 220lb, earned points with a 3-2 win.

Austin Davis, a seven-year NFL veteran and current quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks was announced Saturday as the new offensive coordinator for Auburn.

“I’m honored and privileged to be the next offensive coordinator at Auburn University and to be a part of an elite staff led by coach Harsin,” Davis said.

“Being born and raised in Mississippi, you know very well what SEC football is all about and I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity that is before me. I’ve been very fortunate to work for one of the best organizations in all of sports and would like to extend a special thanks to Pete Carroll and John Schneider for believing in me as a young coach.

STINSON AND FAMILY move to Ole Miss was an easy decision.

“They made me feel like I was family when I went down there,” Stinson said. “It’s just amazing going down there so I feel like that’s the reason I’m going there.”

Although Stinson is a corner by nature who is certain to contribute to a developing Ole Miss defense, the Opelika

standout claims that Kiffin has plans to work him in on both sides of the ball.

“Right now they’ve got me playing defense,” Stinson said. “But I talked to (Kiffin) the other day and he said something about playing some offense. That would be a great opportunity playing for a Lane Kiffin offense.”

Since taking the reigns

at Ole Miss, Kiffin has developed a renowned offense and escorted the program to previously unseen heights with its first-ever 10-win season.

Stinson believes that the state of the program makes now the perfect time to ‘come to the ‘Sip.’ “I’m coming in at the right time,” Stinson said. “I feel like I’m coming in at the perfect time. When I get there, we can keep increasing what we’re doing on the field and I feel like we could have a really good team.”

With the next chapter of his athletic career officially underway, Stinson looks back on his time at Opelika with appreciation.

“Being at Opelika prepared me for things like this,” Stinson said.

Where Auburn Stands After Early National Signing Day The Auburn Tigers’ early national signing day period ended with a splash when the No. 1 junior college defensive lineman Jeffrey M’ba announced his commitment Sunday, but there is still much to do.

The commitment of the 6-foot-6-inch, 305-pound French native immediately fills a need along the interior of the defensive line and caps off a recruiting trifecta for Auburn — signing the top-rated JUCO defensive lineman, cornerback and safety.

At the start of last week, Auburn found itself outside of the top 35 recruiting rankings per 247 Composite. Flipping two “blue chip” recruits from Alabama and LSU and the final addition of M’ba has moved the Tigers’ 2022 class up to No. 13 in the country — No. 6 in the SEC. The majority of Auburn’s class signed last week but some notable names still remain of the list of 2022 targets — notably local commit Cadel Story of Lanett, who pushed his signing back to February for ambiguous reasons.

Additionally, the transfer portal is as active as ever, and Auburn failed to sufficiently address its offensive line needs on early national signing day. The big guys up front will be a primary focus for Harsin and his staff over the next month or so.

transfers, Auburn could have between 10 to 14 more roster spots available this cycle. The Tigers had a successful week; but none of it matters if they do not land a couple offensive linemen and a few others via transfer. The following is not a comprehensive list, of course, but here is a look at where the Tigers could be focusing as the calendar flips into 2022 and Auburn builds out its roster for year two under Harsin.

PROSPECTS REMAINING FOR 2022: 4-star RB Tre Citizen: Auburn had hoped Citizen would sign last week.

The Tigers already signed 4-star running back Damari Alston, but the No. 9-ranked RB Citizen is still a top target for the Tigers. The Lake Charles, Louisiana, prospect will have to forgo attention from LSU and Florida to stay with Auburn. We will see if Auburn running backs coach Cadillac Williams is worth his weight in gold on this one.

4-star DL Caden Story: Another puzzler for Auburn, Story’s father said he pushed back the commitment due to logistical concerns. Story has been committed to the Tigers since August, so this may be a non-story. However, this is one to monitor.

4-star OL/DL Tae Woody: Academic concerns pushed back Woody’s commitment to February.

The versatile commit out of Lafayette, Alabama, has official visits planned to The Plains and to Florida State — so it appears to be a two

horse race. The No. 15 interior offensive lineman in the nation would be massive get for Auburn.

3-star LB EJ Lightsey: Dropping his commitment to Florida after the firing of Dan Mullen, Lightsey, the No. 49 linebacker in the nation according to 247 Composite, is a target for Auburn.

3-star OL Jalen Farmer: Another Florida guy, Farmer has an official visit coming up next month.

3-star OL Anez Cooper: The 6-foot-6-inch, 352-pound in-state commit has loads of potential with that body.

3-star Safety Laquan Robinson: The Greenville, Alabama, prospect is rated the No. 42 player at his position nationally and is “warm” on 247’s recruiting database for Auburn and Ole Miss.

TRANSFER PORTAL TARGETS: Offensive Linemen: There are a number of names to watch out for.

Auburn’s offensive line is in jeopardy of once again being a bottom-three position group in 2022 — if not dead last. With questions surrounding the quarterback present as well, the need for solidifying line is imperative. Keep your eye on Virginia transfers Ryan Swoboda and Bobby Haskins, Western Kentucky’s Mason Brooks, Harvard’s Spencer Rolland and Cornell’s Hunter Nourzad, among others.

QB Kedon Slovis: AuburnLive’s Justin Hokanson reported, shortly after Austin Davis was hired as Auburn’s offensive

coordinator, that Davis was already working on the former USC star. Three years ago, Slovis had a breakout freshman campaign. He has since cooled off — thanks in part to injuries and the mess that has been the USC program — and lost his starting job this past season.

QB Cameron Ward: Another QB to keep an eye on, Ward won the Jerry Rice Award in 2020 as the top freshman in the FCS. Last year, he threw for 4,600 yards, 47 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He still has three years of eligibility remaining but has taken his lone official visit to see Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.

WR Jacob Copeland: Auburn was in the running for Copeland when he was coming out of high school.

The former top-100 recruit chose Florida instead, but following an up-and-down career thus far, Copeland entered the portal in the

wake of Dan Mullen’s firing.

WR Trey Palmer: A member of the class of 2019, Palmer entered the transfer portal after LSU’s firing of Ed Orgeron. The upside is there, along with proven punt and kick return abilities. Despite improvement toward the latter half of the season, the Tigers’ receiving core could use some reinforcements.

LB Mahomoud Diabate: An Auburn High School alum, Diabate recorded 89 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in 2021 for the Florida Gators. With the departure of linebackers Zakoby McClain and Chandler Wooten, Diabate could slot right in to pair with Owen Pappoe in 2022.

LB Eugene Asante: If the Tigers can’t get the hometown Diabate, Asante — the only transfer to be confirmed as a visitor to Auburn so far — could be a

target the Tigers push hard for. Asante was a rotation guy for the North Carolina Tar Heels but would still have two years of eligibility to improve on The Plains.

DL Jayson Jones: Originally an Alabama commit, Jones opted for Eugene, Oregon, because the Ducks allowed him to play his preferred position among the defensive line.

Coming out of Calera High School in Alabama, Auburn could bring Jones — who would have four years of eligibility left — back to his home state and slot him into the rotation in year one.

CB DJ James: A Spanish Fort, Alabama prospect, and another Oregon Duck, James earned a starting role this past season and could be another target that Auburn benefits from adding. With Roger McCreary heading to the NFL, Auburn could use some immediate reinforcement at the position.

The OHS boys varsity split a pair of games this week, losing at Russell County (55-64) and beating Guntersville (66-61) in the Panthers’ gym.

Brenton Williams and Isaiah Knight scored 12 and 11 points, respectively against the Warriors.

Opelika defeated Guntersville on the road, 69-66. The Dogs were led

by Grady Bynum’s game high 26 points. Knight and Williams scored 13 points apiece.

Head coach Wesley Button did not schedule any games or play in a tournament prior to

Christmas, opting to play in the “LaGrange (Ga) Tournament”, on Dec. 28 through 30.

The boys play Auburn on Jan. 3 in the AHS gym. Tip-off is scheduled at 7 p.m.

OHS FOOTBALL 2022 The 2022-24 AHSAA

classification numbers were released a week ago.

Opelika jumped from 6A to 7A because of increase in students at OHS in the ninth, 10th and 11th grades.

OHS is in class 7A Region 2 with, Auburn, Central, Smiths Station, RE Lee, Jeff Davis, Dothan, Enterprise and Prattville. The nineteam region means schools only need two non-region games to finish a 10-game regular season schedule. Head Coach Erik Speakman verified through a text message that the Dogs

will continue to open up against Calloway out of Georgia. Opelika plays Auburn on Sept. 30 at Duck Samford Stadium.

The schedule should be completed in the coming weeks.

decision to join the Green Wave defense was based — in large — upon the connections made with coaches and the positive environment for Love and his family.

“They showed me love,” Love said. “Just the environment I want to be around and put my family around.”

According to Love, his first visit on campus was exactly what he wanted it to be: good vibes and great food.

“When I first got to campus, it was what I thought it would be,” Love said. “I fit the culture. I like the culture down there; they’ve got good food.”

As far as his on-field mindset goes, Love is prepared to mold his game to fit whatever brand of defense will be most helpful to the success of the Wave.

“Any way they want

me to help them,” Love said. “If I need to do something different on defense to help them win, I’ll do it. I’m just that type of player to help the team out.”

When it comes to reflecting on his time at Opelika, Love is grateful to be prepared for competing in the biggest moments at the highest level.

“Opelika prepared me

for moments like this,” Love said. “Interviews, big games. We play big games every year so it’ll teach you how to play in big games and practice for big games.”

ALABAMA SPORTS HALL OF FAME HONORS STAN WHITE 2022 STARR-SULLIVAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CONTRIBUTED BY ASHOF The Board of Directors of the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce that Stan White will be the recipient of the 2022 StarrSullivan Achievement Award at the 54th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

White graduated from Berry High School in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1989. He was a first-team All-State selection while

helping captain his team to a state championship run his senior year. After high school, he attended Auburn University and was named the starting quarterback in 1990 and became the first and only quarterback in Auburn history to start every game from the start of his freshman campaign through his senior year, a total of 45 straight games.

White’s senior year he was named permanent team captain while leading the 1993 Auburn team to an

undefeated season and fourth-place final ranking.

He then signed with the New York Giants where he would play for four years under legendary coach Dan Reeves.

In 2001, White broadcast his first Auburn football game with the legendary Jim Fyffe and the Auburn Sports Network.

White has been in the booth every year since, totaling 21 years and 269 consecutive broadcasts, the most broadcasts by a commentator in Auburn

history. From 2003 to 2018, White was alongside Rod Bramblett for some of the most iconic calls in Auburn history, including the famous “Prayer in Jordan-Hare” and “Kick Six” broadcasts of Auburn’s 2013 SEC championship team. In 2019, White and Andy Burcham became the current broadcast partners for the Auburn Sports Network.

White has owned a State Farm Insurance and Financial Services agency for 20 years in

Birmingham. He spends much of his time as a volunteer coach at John Carroll Catholic High School, where his passion has been mentoring and coaching student athletes and using their experiences in sports as a teaching tool for the challenges in life.

Carroll has called the 32-year-old Davis “one of the bright young minds in the game”, and stated “he’s been able to transition from player to coach unlike anybody I’ve ever seen. It was just so smooth for him, and he’s been thinking like a coach for a long time, obviously because he was able to capture the role.

“Russ (Wilson) thinks the world of him, Shane (Waldron) thinks the world of him and I do too because he is really, really good at what he does. He is going to really be a big benefit to their program.”

In Davis’ first season as quarterbacks coach,

Wilson has called Davis “an amazing teacher,” and said that he will “be a brilliant offensive coordinator and potential head coach one day.”

This fall, Auburn also expanded its Auburn First dual-enrollment program, which allows

for tuition waivers for those with demonstrated financial need.

Auburn First students who earn at least six credit hours of approved Auburn coursework and maintain a 3.0 GPA in those college classes by Aug. 15 of their senior year in high school qualify for automatic admission to the university.

Just last year, Auburn furthered its efforts to reach the best students in the state and beyond by joining the Common App system — a powerful online college application platform that serves more than 3

million applicants, teachers, counselors and advisors throughout the nation and world.

Since doing so, Auburn has received more than 26,000 applicants through the Common App tool.

While the early action deadline for fall 2022 has already passed, the final deadline to apply for that semester is Feb. 1, with decisions on those applicants expected by mid-March.

But will he immediately take the reins of Harsin’s offense, or will we see some sort of conglomerate of offensive coaching in 2022.

With the way recent offensive coordinator hires have gone at Auburn — three have come and gone in as many seasons — I’m hoping for the later. And here’s why.

For starters, Harsin himself is an admitted offensive guy. He earned plaudits for the effectiveness and efficiency of his offenses during his time as offensive coordinator at Texas and head coach at Boise State.

To truly get the full Harsin experience, the head coach needs to be the one calling plays.

lessening the impact of Davis, however.

Hopefully, Davis can come into Auburn and immediately address one Cam Newton-sized hole within the program — development. I call it a Newton-sized hole because every quarterback since the 2010 Heisman winner has struggled to progress during their time on The Plains.

Under former head coach Gus Malzahn, quarterback development was arguably the main thing that held back the Tigers from reaching their potential. Sean White, Jeremy Johnson, Jarrett Stidham and yes, Bo Nix, all regressed during their time at Auburn. The only exception may be Nick Marshall, although his second season leading

the team did not quite reach the levels of 2013’s National Championshipappearing Tigers.

With the help of trusted receivers coach — and former Fresno State offensive coordinator — Eric Kiesau, Harsin should be able to keep his focus on the weekly offensive game plan.

Additionally, he will be assisted in elevating the talented quarterbacks on Auburn’s roster.

The fact that the threeyear starter Nix is on the way to Oregon makes this fact even more paramount.

If Davis takes on this role and wholeheartedly buys into Harin’s system, Auburn’s offensive coaching staff could boast three elite-level football minds, all on the page and working

university through its various virtual and on-campus visit opportunities.

Auburn Professor Gives Advice For Avoiding Holiday Blues, Maintaining Mental Health CONTRIBUTED BY AUBURN UNIVERSITY

The holidays are a festive time where people come together to worship, give thanks and celebrate life, but they also can be a difficult time for many.

Whether it’s remembering those who have been lost or the amplification of stressful interaction with family and friends, the holiday blues are an unfortunate reality for countless people.

Auburn’s Jordan Burko Macatee, an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, offers tips for anyone who may struggle with mental health during the holidays. She also provides plenty of resources and highlights ways those who may require assistance can get the help they need in this edition of Expert Answers.

Maintaining positive mental health is always important, but it is especially crucial during the holidays, when many people struggle with depression.

What are some good ways for people to keep their spirits up and focusing on positivity during the holidays?

While the holidays can be a joyful time, they can also be a difficult time for many. Feelings of sadness, grief or loneliness can hit especially hard during this time of year.

Simply trying to suppress those difficult emotions is not effective, and it is important to acknowledge and validate the presence

of them. It is healthy and normal to feel a range of emotions, and it can be helpful to find ways to express them, such as through journaling or talking to a trusted person. Acknowledging these difficult feelings and engaging in healthy coping strategies can help improve mood.

Depression is often associated with negative thinking patterns. One way to gently shift this way of thinking is to engage in regular gratitude practice, which has been shown to improve mood over time. Gratitude involves intentionally reflecting on positive aspects of one’s life and can be a powerful tool in reframing how we think about things. Try writing down one to three things you feel grateful for each day.

Research also shows that maintaining a consistent routine, and engaging in enjoyable activities, is important for positive mood. While one of the well-deserved perks of the holiday season is time off work or school, the shift from a regular daily routine to no routine can be difficult. Maintaining a flexible routine, including wake and bed time, exercise and down time, can be helpful. To give yourself something to look forward to, try to intentionally schedule at least one enjoyable activity a day.

Finally, while it can be wonderful to see what our friends and family are up to this time of year

on social media, often it can lead us to feel left out or compare ourselves to others in an unhelpful way. Remind yourself that what is shown on social media are most often the positive highlights and recognize that there is likely much you aren’t seeing. If you notice that scrolling through your social media feed is not serving your mood in a positive way, practice setting boundaries around how much you are using these platforms.

The holidays are an isolating time for some people. What are some good ways they can become involved with others to avoid isolation and feelings of melancholy?

Maintaining social connections can be a powerful way to improve mood. Volunteering with local organizations is one way to blend kindness with staying connected. Organizations that provide or deliver meals, youth services, hospitals, nursing homes and many others may be looking for volunteers.

Animal shelters may also need helpers to play with, exercise or bathe animals. Spending time with these furry friends can also boost mood.

For those who identify as religious or spiritual, enjoying religious events or gatherings during this time can promote feelings of connection with others with similar values. Supporting others who may also feel isolated during this time of year can help.

Consider writing cards to service members or those who are incarcerated or donating to a gift drive to support the families of these individuals. If you are not able to physically be with loved ones during the holiday season, consider ways to connect with them virtually.

Engaging in a special tradition “together,” though physically apart, can also be a way to encourage feelings of closeness.

In general terms, how important is maintaining positive mental health for a person’s well-being and overall health?

Very! Maintaining our psychological health is an essential component to overall well-being and health. Like regular exercise and adequate nutrition to maintain our physical health, it is also important to practice consistent strategies to maintain our mental health. Positive mental health is strongly associated with better physical health outcomes, including but not limited to immune system functioning, cardiovascular health and blood pressure. There is a reciprocal relationship between physical and mental health, and both contribute significantly to overall well-being and life satisfaction. It is important that we prioritize both in efforts toward establishing healthy lifestyles.

What are some resources, both for students and the public, people can utilize

Auburn University Accounting Professor Offers Tax Tips on Year-End Financial, Tax Planning

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND WHEN IT COMES TO YEAR-END FINANCIAL AND TAX PLANNING? All of us should periodically review our finances, which in December naturally will bring tax issues to the forefront.

Conversations with family members and financial and

tax advisors is empowering because people can feel that they are in control of their current and future finances. Broad questions include: How will or might this year and next year be different? Are any life changes on the horizon (like retirement, getting married or having a baby)?

Are any one-time financial windfalls or costs expected? These life changes can have significant financial and tax ramifications.

Small changes are always possible. For example, increasing a monthly investment in a work-related or individual retirement account or college savings account — which have tax-related benefits — could be feasible. Although not directly related to taxes, someone with credit card or other debt should consider increasing monthly payments. Following through on ideas is critical.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND WHEN IT COMES TO SPECIFIC YEAR-END TAX DEDUCTIONS? 2021 is a good year to make a contribution to a favorite charitable organization. Congress made a temporary tax law change to allow a $300 (unmarried

filers) or $600 (married filing joint) deduction for taxpayers who take the standard deduction. The IRS estimates 90% of taxpayers use the standard deduction, so this rule affects a significant number of people.

Traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are good for savings and can provide current tax benefits. (A Roth IRA is good for savings too, but tax benefits are at the time of withdrawal.)

2021 contributions can be made as late as April 15, 2022, which gives taxpayers a chance to review their tax position and then decide if they want to make and designate contributions as 2021. Depending on taxpayer income, the IRA contributions could be deductible.

ARE THERE ANY NEW DEDUCTIONS OR DEVELOPMENTS THAT WOULD AFFECT LATE-YEAR TAX PLANNING OR SPENDING IN GENERAL? Congress increased the Child Tax Credit for 2021.

Many taxpayers are aware of this change because the law also required the IRS to make early payments

of half the credit. Those six months of payments — July 2020 through December 2020 — have been made to people who appear to be eligible for the credit based on prior tax return data. There will be a reckoning when tax returns are completed because 2021 income affects the eligibility for and the amount of the credit. Many will receive the remainder of the credit when they file 2021 tax returns, but others could find out they are not actually eligible for all or part of the credit. In that case, taxpayers could find themselves with an amount due to the IRS or a smaller refund.

The ultimate outcome of the Build Back Better legislation that has passed in the House but not the Senate is uncertain. Several tax increases are in the bill, most of which affect higher-income taxpayers. Those increases wouldn’t occur until 2022 or later. If a bill passes before the end of the year, some taxpayers would want to consider differences between 2021 and 2022 rules and possibly take action in 2021.

ARE THERE ANY TAX ISSUES

DUE TO COVID-19?

Tax-related changes due to COVID-19 have subsided. For example, in 2020, taxpayers who had received unemployment compensation were able to exclude some of that income. For 2021, the rules are back to normal: Unemployment compensation is fully taxable.

Fruit in Your Stocking

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1.

hen I fly to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to be with my son at Christmas, as soon as my feet hit the cold snowy pavement, I am off to the stores to try to fine tangerines to put in my son’s stocking. This is a southern tradition that I know many families enjoy. For some reason though, in Michigan I cannot find the familiar delicious tangerine which is so

easy to peel and enjoy.

So I have to substitute tangerines for oranges which we enjoy too.

Have you noticed around Christmas that folks seem to be happier, cheerful, giving and such good listeners to family, friends, neighbors in trying to catch up on people’s lives. Young children truly observe these actions of the heart which I can clearly remember one of my young

first graders told me that he wished that the spirit of Christmas would last all year long. NI truly believe and see in all my years of teaching that modeling the fruits of the spirit in front of your children is the best life gift of all!

God gives us delicious tasty fruits which we can live and serve others each and every day. Galatians 5:22 in the Bible says, “But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” The heart fruit of the people in our community is so very ripe in outreach to others in times of need. We are so blessed to have citizens who truly care.

Love is truly the very spring and essence of life. Love goes beyond human understanding.

God is love so when a person is filled with His Love we want to serve others.

When teaching JOY to young children, I always have my bottle of dish washing detergent JOY so they can suds up and be happy. JOY lights up

our faces and our hearts and it truly impacts others. JOY is the inward hope that we have about life and God promises us eternal life through His son Jesus Christ.

J-Jesus, O-Others, Y-Yourselves.

Peace is based on faith and trust in God. It does not allow strife or dissension with our fellow man.

Too, we must extend gratitude to God on how He made us so unique.

Life is a gift and happiness with who we are radiates peace. Helping others with a heart of peace benefits others.

During the holidays families are close together.

Children have different personalities which sometimes might cause difficult interactions.

Taking time to sit down and address difficult situations with children can be a start of learning to get along and have peace.

Longsuffering is being patient and forbearing difficult times in life. It is facing adversities in life without growing bitter. This is a time when self control with love is expressed. Forgiveness is life’s key with this

fruit of the Spirit. This encourages us to keep on living and giving to others. I know at recess when there may be dissension between young children, addressing the situation quickly between children and have them forgive each other is a life lesson that they carry for life. Children forgive so quickly.

Kindness represents friendliness, generous and being considerate to others. Kindness is taking time to care.

Young children express kindness in such simple ways. It may be a picture they want to give another person to cheer them up, helping with household chores or coming around to give each other big hugs.

Goodness is doing what is right in the sight of the Lord and man. We want to serve others with Love.

Faithfulness is trusting and knowing that God will keep His promises.

Too, this relates to people in being a trustworthy person whom others can depend on.

Self control is being able to restrain to do

what is right in what we say and do over our entire body, soul and spirit.

Mildness and calmness diffuses into other people’s lives.

How can we give our children hope whether we teach children or giving hope to our own children, grandchildren.

How can we light the candle of hope before our children this Christmas?

This Christmas we can worship God with hope.

Hope is contagious in the hearts of our children.

When they see hope in our own lives then they know and a feel loved.

God’s Word tells us in Romans 15:13-“Now may the God of Hope fill you with joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in Hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Opelika and our community not only grows fruit for us to eat but it provides fruit for us to live by and to share with others. Those of us who have lived in other places realize that our community is a little heaven on earth. Merry Christmas to all!

Just under two months ago, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) drafted a letter to the Biden Administration labeling a group of concerned and involved parents in Ohio “domestic terrorists.” This past week, the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) effectively ended its membership with the NSBA, and rightfully so, but we must not stop there. We must completely derail the woke left’s pedagogical agenda of attacking our schools and indoctrinating our children with Marxist ideologies. Parental rights in schools must be protected, educational freedom supported and federal overreach reversed. We should stand up for students and

parents, not systems.

As a mom of three public school students, as a conservative and as an Alabamian, I have a vested interest in ensuring the success of our schools and the students they educate.

Parents must have a voice in what is being taught to their children and should be allowed to question school leadership when they have a concern. It is the radical lunacy of the left to equate concerned parents with domestic terrorists, and it’s incumbent on all of us as conservatives and parents to stop their wokism in its tracks.

As parents, we are the last line of defense in protecting our children from the ongoing attempts by the left to indoctrinate the next generation of Americans into their broken view of the world and America’s

place in it. As a conservative, I’ll never allow our kids to be brainwashed by a curriculum that evaluates their activism over their understanding.

Even with the forces at work in liberal media, in government and in congress, I find myself encouraged that the NSBA got scared enough of the grassroots movement to write such a silly letter. Parents across the nation are refusing to stand by and let the craziness continue.

As your Senator, I will fight to make sure our children are safe from the woke left’s harmful and divisive propaganda and social engineering by fighting to remove Washington’s heavy hand in what students are taught and returning control back to the states and local authorities where it belongs.

Inside the Statehouse Jimmy Holley

egendary state senator Jimmy Holley has decided to not seek reelection to the State Senate next year after 44 years in the legislature. He will be missed in the State Senate. For the past decade, Holley has become a mentor and confidante for incoming State Senators, especially the members of this quadrennium’s freshman class. Senator Will Barfoot (R-Pike Road), has told me on more than one occasion that he has relied on Senator Holley’s wisdom and experience on a daily basis.

Holley is generally considered the most knowledgeable person in the Senate when it comes to parliamentary procedure and the rules of the Senate. Others like Senator Clyde Chambliss (R-Prattville) have been mentored by Holley. In fact, at the beginning of each quadrennium there was a clamor and struggle to seek the seat next to Holley by members so that they could learn the intricacies of the senate rules and gather his institutional knowledge and wisdom.

Holley has been my close friend for 40 years. We served together and sat next to each other for 16 years in the House of Representatives. We represented adjoining counties. I have never seen a more diligent and capable legislator.

When his hometown of Elba lost its schools to flooding, I saw Holley singlehandedly fight and secure extra funds from the Special Education Trust Fund Budget to build them new schools. Years later when a tornado destroyed Enterprise High School, which was and is the largest high school in his district, he secured funds from the state to build a new, stateof-the-art high school for Enterprise.

Holley would work at being a good and knowledgeable legislator. When most legislators would simply show up to vote and enjoyed the nightly social events hosted by lobbyists and associations, Holley would go back to his hotel room and study legislation and sharpen up on the rules.

One day Holley and I were sitting at our desks working on a myriad of legislation put out by the Rules Committee, I looked at the calendar and was unfamiliar with a looming bill about three bills down on the agenda. I asked Holley about a certain piece of legislation. He calmly told me all about the bill and told me I probably was not going to vote for it since it was a trial lawyer bill. He knew my pro-business propensity. It occurred to me that he had read the bill in its entirety as well as all the bills on the calendar the night before in his hotel room.

Holley was born and raised in Elba in Coffee County and has lived his entire life there except for the four-years he went to college in Tennessee, which is, by the way, where he met his lovely wife, Mary. Holley and Mary have two fine and successful sons. They all live close by their parents, so they have had the opportunity to watch their grandchildren grow up and go to all their ballgames and school events. They have a wonderful family life. However, even though Holley is only 77, he has had some health problems. The state and primarily his four-county senate district will miss him immensely.

Holley has spent over half of his life as a lawmaker. He is in his sixth term in the Senate and prior to that served five terms in the state House of Representatives. He currently chairs the Senate Government Affairs Committee and has been a fixture on the Legislative Council. His district includes Coffee, Covington and Pike Counties and the northern portion of Dale County.

Senate President Pro Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) summed up Holley’s departure well. He said, “Senator Jimmy Holley is an institution in the Alabama Senate and our body will not be the same without him. I further appreciate the decades of service he has given to his district and to our state in his long tenure in the Senate, and I am grateful for the wisdom and experience he has shared with our membership.”

Holley has a place in Alabama political history as one of the all-time legendary state lawmakers.

Opelika Attorney, Prosecutor Enters Race for Lee County Circuit Judge CONTRIBUTED TO THE OBSERVER

Conservative attorney Jeff Tickal last week announced his candidacy to serve as a Circuit Judge for Alabama’s 37th Judicial Circuit, which covers Lee County.

A longtime resident of Lee County, Tickal is an experienced prosecutor, litigator and appellate attorney dedicated to upholding the rule of law. He graduated as a civil engineer from Auburn University and obtained his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.

“I am excited to officially announce my candidacy to serve as a circuit judge in Lee County,” Tickal said. “This is the seat

Our Constitution was ultimately designed to protect people from the tyranny of government and oppression. I believe in that Constitution and will always support and uphold it.”

Last week the Heritage Foundation released its Election Integrity Scorecard, and Alabama was ranked among the best states in the union for election integrity.

obert Joseph Dole passed away in his sleep at the age of 98.

He leaves a powerful legacy as a war hero, congressman and senator who served the United States with honor and gratitude.

He was known for his love of country support for his fellow veterans, and his keen sense of humor. He overcome incredible adversity in life with a smile on his face.

He was born and

raised in the small town of Russell, Kansas. Never forgetting his roots, he listed his childhood home, 1035 North Maple, as his permanent residence throughout his political career. A star high school athlete, he was recruited by legendary Coach Phogg Allen to play basketball for perennial power Kansas where he enrolled as a pre-med student.

World War II ended his basketball career and his pre-med studies. Dole, with the Army’s 10th Mountain

Division, almost gave his life for his country in April of 1945. He was severely wounded in combat in 1945 when he was hit by a German shell in the upper back and right arm. The bomb shattered his collarbone and part of his spine.

He was not expected to survive, much less live the incredible life we now celebrate.

Through Kansas grit and determination, he went through agonizing months of rehabilitation much of which he did in his backyard at his home in Kansas.

He permanently lost the use of his right arm. He would always shake hands with his left hand, something he learned to do so as not to make the people he met feel uncomfortable.

Dole realizing that his dreams of becoming a doctor were no longer viable, he put himself through law school and returned to Russell to set up his law practice. From this small town in Kansas, he became an important national political figure for decades. After eight

years in the House, he served as United States Senator from Kansas from 1969 to 1995. Ten of those years he was the Republican leader, both as the Minority and Majority Leader, respectively. He served as Republican National Chairman under Richard Nixon from 1971 to 1973.

He was Gerald Ford’s Vice Presidential pick in 1976 and he was the Republican nominee for president in 1996.

I had the good fortune to shake his left hand on many occasions. His family and

my family became good friends when he was chairman of the Republican National Committee, and my father was state committeeman for Alabama.

In 1996, I was extremely honored when he asked me to be his state chairman for his Presidential campaign.

As a political mentor, he taught me that the party on the other side of the aisle was not our enemy, but as public servants we must work together to do what is right for the people of See HOOPER, page B11

Last week the Opelika Library Friends was honored to accept a community grant from Golden State Foods (GSF). The $19,308.93 grant will be used to purchase an outdoor musical garden which will be placed in the library green space.

The above-described property, containing approximately 160.2 acres, is located along North Uniroyal Road and Ridge Road.

Public Notice of this public hearing with insertion of the proposed ordinance was first published on December 16, 2021, in The Opelika Observer. This notice is given pursuant to Sections 11-52-77 and 11-52-78 Code of Alabama (1975). The City Council reserves the right to modify or alter any of the proposed amendments to the Zoning Ordinance.

At said public hearing all who desire to be heard shall have the opportunity to speak for or in opposition to the adoption of the Ordinance.
