EAST MIDLANDS
The East Midlands is famous for its food! Red Leicester cheese, Lincolnshire sausages, Melton Mowbray pork pies, Stilton, and Bakewell Tarts all come from the region, and there’s still a well-founded food and drink industry in the area, with strong links to manufacturing, agriculture and catering. The world’s first Bramley Apple tree was even planted in Nottinghamshire! Lincolnshire and Rutland are both very agricultural. 30% of the country’s potatoes are grown in Lincolnshire, and Walkers (based in Leicestershire) use exclusively Lincolnshire potatoes for their crisps! There are also lots of opportunities available in the transport and logistics sector. 9% of jobs in the area are in logistics, and the region has the highest growth of traffic rates per year of any in the UK. This is probably because the East Midlands is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. In recent years Leicester has seen a huge surge in population, but in the next ten, Rutland is expected to take over and receive the most migrants. The average age of the population in the East Midlands is 41, meaning there are plenty of opportunities available for the younger generation due to an ageing workforce.

LEICESTER
Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands, and is home to over 330,000 people! The city has the highest ethnic minority population in the UK, with over 70 different languages being spoken regularly throughout the city. The most popular language other than English is Gujarati. If you are looking for a career within events management, then it is worth bearing in mind that the Diwali celebrations in Leicester are the largest outside of India! Leicester has a fantastic background in the textiles trade, with Next and Boden having their head offices in the area. There are also many factories opening up related to textiles work, mainly because it’s becoming more expensive to import from abroad.

THERE ARE OVER 12,000 WORKPLACES IN THE TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY SECTOR IN THE EAST MIDLANDS WEST MIDLANDS
While the West Midlands is home to the largest built-up area outside of London (Birmingham), beyond the central urban district much of the region is actually very rural, with the exception of Stoke. This central area generates around half of the goods and services of the whole of the West Midlands!

BIRMINGHAM
Birmingham is the most populated city outside of London and is home to around 1.1 million people! Because of its huge size, there are six separate universities located in the city, making the city the largest higher education centre outside of the capital. The city really boomed as a result of the industrial revolution, and was once known as the first manufacturing town in the world. Nowadays the service sector is the most popular in the city, employing more than 80% of the city’s workforce. There are still quite a few manufacturing industries to be found in the city though, with 40% of the UK’s jewellery being made solely in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter!
The area has a fantastic industrial heritage, with much of the industrial revolution beginning in Birmingham and the Black Country. In fact, Ironbridge Gorge, linking Broseley, Madeley and Coalbrookdale, is thought of as the birthplace of modern industry! There are still loads of opportunities for budding engineers in the area today, with BMW having their main four-cylinder engine plant in Warwickshire, and the Jaguar Land Rover Engineering Centre being based just south of Coventry. In the past there have been issues with unemployment throughout the region, but this is slowly improving, with 70% of people being employed as of 2012. There are around 5.6 million people in the West Midlands, equalling 11% of the UK. The area has one of the largest proportions of under 16s of any region in the country. All these young people need looking after, meaning there’s a big demand for effective childcare services!

Your next step is to speak to a careers advisor, or even just a teacher or your parents. They might be able to open you up to other options that you hadn’t considered before, or didn’t even know existed! Careers advisors will also be able to point you towards all the relevant material you need in order to make an informed decision. After all, the best thing you can do is to arm yourself with knowledge and get all the information you can together from as many sources as possible. It is difficult as we offer such a wide range of subjects. Working with animals and sport are always popular but the building trades, in an improving economy are regaining much of their previous popularity.

There are approximately 6,100 students on full, part-time and Apprenticeship courses across the campuses.

We are specialists in what is known as the ‘Land Based’ subjects. Courses are offered in subject areas including agriculture, animal welfare, sport, equestrian studies, construction, building and associate trades and horticulture.

We offer functional skills at level 1 and 2 and work-based Apprenticeships up to level 7 depending on the vocational area.

First College Deliver Work Based Learning First College supports hundreds of learners and employers in various Apprenticeship options including: IT, Hospitality, Business Administration, Customer Service, Early Years, and AAT. Martin Manufacturing UK is one such employer who, in May 2014, saw the achievement of a number of IT Application Specialist Apprenticeships. Martin Manufacturing UK, based in Louth, are a world leader in the creation of dynamic lighting solutions for the entertainment, architectural and commercial sectors. This is what Jason Andrews, (Director, Martin Manufacturing UK) had to say about the support they recieved: ‘By working closely with our preferred local training partner, First College, we have given our
staff some new skills which has improved their daily productivity whilst using IT. Furthermore it has developed their maths / English and as a result of achieving the qualification we have seen many of the learners receive a boost of confidence. All round a win-win situation…’ A learner perspective: ‘Really enjoyed the course, struggled at the start but found, with support from Kev (IT Assessor) and my colleagues, I gained a lot of new skills and confidence in using IT systems. Former Kidderminster student to take THE lead role at National Theatre Self Portrait Earns Gold for Lily Derby College Art & Design student Lily Bowler has beaten competition from hundreds of local young people to win an award from the University of Derby and be acclaimed as an up and coming talent in the creative industries. Lily (19) from Littleover was presented with the New Creatives Gold Award trophy and £250 by Professor Chris White from the University of Derby for her textiles piece ‘Aged Self Portrait’ – an interpretation of how she would look in years to come. Lily, a former pupil at St Benedict’s Performing Arts College in Derby, is planning to take a year out cycling across
the UK before applying to university to continue her arts studies, and hopes to specialise in heritage embroidery skills. She said: ‘People are obsessed with being younger, and women in particular want to get plastic surgery all the time. I wanted to show how I will look when I’m older, and that you can be both old and beautiful. In fact, I can’t wait to be old!’ To create her piece Lily studied pictures of her parents and grandparents to see how they had aged, and fashioned the piece out of patchwork and embroidery.
Former Kidderminster College student, and multi-award winning director and actor, Rufus Norris, will become the next director of the National Theatre in April 2015. Rufus will be the sixth director of the National Theatre and is the first nonOxbridge graduate to take up the position. Andy Dobson, principal of Kidderminster College, spoke of his pride that Rufus will be taking up the leading role: ‘This is undeniably the most prestigious role in British theatre, and Rufus Norris will be at the fore, showing the world exactly why we excel.It’s great to see one of our talented students going through a vocational route and landing such a top job. ‘We have a strong performing arts heritage here at Kidderminster, and attract extremely high calibre students.

It’s made me realise that you have to start at the bottom and learn the skills to progress and become attractive to an employer. Nobody is going to invest in you if you have no skills.
recently gave a presentation to the chair of Health Education England, Sir Keith Pearson. When I tell my mum she’s amazed, and can’t believe I’m in contact with these people. I’m proud of everything that I’ve done and I’m proud that I got the opportunity. It’s benefitted me in so many ways. Identical twin brothers who studied at Bilborough College are both heading to Oxford University to study history after achieving almost mirror image marks in their A-levels. Isaac (left) and Jacob Vivian (both 18) were offered places at Oxford on the condition they got three A grades, which they both achieved. Isaac got an A* in Religious Studies and A grades in History, Geography and Critical Thinking AS-level. He will go on to study History (Ancient and Modern). Jacob got an A* in Government and Politics and A grades in Geography and History as well as a B in Religious Studies, and will study History and Politics at Oxford. Jacob said: “We didn’t plan to go to the same university, Oxford was the only same choice we had. Now we’ll make sure we meet up at least once a weekwe’re going to be a lot closer together than we imagined. “We lived in China for a quite a long time because of our parent’s jobs and were home schooled, but came back to Nottingham to do our A-Levels. “We’ve always been competitive as brothers over the years. It’s probably got a bit friendlier as we’ve got older but we’ve still tried to work out who’s done the best. Isaac said: “I’ve really enjoyed Bilborough. The first year you get used to the new surroundings and people and then really get to know your teachers more, and start being yourself. My teachers have been brilliant, especially in History where I knew I needed to get an A so they gave me lots of support. “I’m really looking forward to going to Oxford, getting to know new people and making friends and getting involved in the sports teams, particularly football and table tennis. It will be very challenging but that’s something I’m looking forward to.” Jacob added: “I’m looking forward to living independently, getting to know people and making friends. We do lots of things together and have similar interests. It’s only recently we’ve started doing different things away from each other. We’re both very excited and eager to get started. “Our colleges aren’t too far away from each other so we’ll make sure we see each other.”

I WANT TO DROP OUT OF COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY AND TRY AN APPRENTICESHIP INSTEAD – IS THAT A GOOD IDEA?
Traineeships are short courses that have been created for young people who lack qualifications and experience of the workplace, and who want to get an edge over the competition when applying for an Apprenticeship or job. Lots of places call their Traineeships ‘Pre-Apprenticeship’ courses.
Many people feel pressured into going to college or starting university, but this isn’t necessarily the right thing for everyone. In the same way, you might have dreamed about going to university, but then found that it’s not actually what you expected, or that you are struggling with the workload.
If you’re 16-18 without a level 3 qualification, or 19-24 without a level 2, and you have little to no work experience, a Traineeship could give you that boost you need. They’ll last 6 weeks to 5 months and will cost you absolutely nothing. You won’t get a qualification at the end (unless you lack core English or Maths qualifications), but will gain some vital experience that will look great on your Apprenticeship or job application form.
Apprenticeships are a great alternative to learning in an academic environment purely because you still gain qualifications, but its practical learning, and you don’t necessarily have to sit in a classroom all day. They’re obviously still hard work, but some people much prefer this style of learning.
Confusingly, some companies call their Apprenticeship schemes Traineeships, so make sure you check before you apply for a role that you actually qualify for it!
WHAT A LEVELS SHOULD I BE STUDYING SO I CAN GET A UNIVERSITY PLACE?
If you are thinking about dropping out, the first thing you should bear in mind is that it is a BIG decision. You are effectively giving up weeks, months or years of work. That being said, if you are sure that college/ uni really isn’t for you then it might not be worth sticking to a career path that could potentially jeopardize your career because you aren’t performing to your maximum potential.

Apprenticeships within the NHS are a great way to start your career. They offer a wide range of professions, and the scope of the NHS means that once you start on a career pathway, it is easier to see what other opportunities are available and move towards them. Apprenticeships offer hands-on experience, where you gain valuable experience alongside learning new skills. They also offer a supportive workforce within which you can build towards a full-time career in your chosen profession. Since 2010 over 1,800 apprentices have been supported within Health in the East Midlands, with over 80% of those recruited aged 16-24 securing permanent positions within 12 months, at a starting salary of £14,000+. Plus the NHS will always be around. Patients will always need to be cared for.”
