SOUTH EAST
The region is home to 8.7 million people, that’s 14% of the population of the UK, making the South East the most populated region of any in the country! The area is one of the best places to find a job in England, not least because the average weekly pay of employees is £536, the highest outside of London. The region also has the highest employment rates of anywhere in the country, so you’re more likely to find a high-paid vacancy here than anywhere else in the UK! Productivity levels are also higher here than elsewhere in the UK. The region contributes 15% towards the nation’s goods and services, that’s £192 billion pounds worth. A third of this is generated solely by Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. The highest productivity levels come from Berkshire however, which produces 28% more goods and services per hour than anywhere else in the UK.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE
Brighton and Hove is home to around 275,000 people, making it the most populated seaside resort. People travel from all over the country, not to mention the rest of the world, to visit Brighton, as it is one of the UK’s top tourist destinations. It’s not all tourism though; Brighton has become a hub for technology, with a large amount of creative and digital companies developing products throughout the city.
If you’re looking for an ICT position, the South East is the right place to look. There are more IT workers in this region than any other part of the country, and Microsoft even have their UK HQ just outside of Reading.

Nowadays the city is more focused on the creative and industrial sectors. BAE Systems, Airbus and Rolls Royce are all based in the area, providing many opportunities for budding engineers interested in working in the aerospace industry. The city also has many ties to technology and innovation, and has in the past been named as one of the UK’s ‘science cities’. In terms of media, Bristol has recently been made the home of many YouTube video studios, including the first UK channel to obtain 1 billion online views, the Yogscast.
The East of England is home to 9% of the population of the UK, that’s around 5.9 million people. The region is a great place to find work, because not only does it have some of the highest employment rates in the country, but it can boast the lowest proportion of jobless households in the UK! The region is also home to some of the best schools and colleges in terms of results in the country. Colchester Royal Grammar School has had the best A level results in England every year since 2006.

LONDON
As the capital of the country, and a worldwide commercial and cultural hotspot, London attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The city is home to 13% of the UK, equalling 8.3 million people; making London the most densely populated area of the country, despite being the smallest in size! There’s no sign that this is going to change any time soon either, as the London region has seen the largest increase of population of any within the UK in the past few years. The capital has the highest average wages in the country, at around £657 a week, but this is offset by the much higher cost of living in the city. House prices in London rose by around 18% in the last year, compared to only 6% in the rest of the country. Despite this though, London households still have the highest average levels of disposable income (spare cash!) in the UK, at around £20,500 a year! London generates more than a fifth of the economy of the whole of the UK, and is still expected to grow by 15% over the next 5 years! The city’s economy is roughly the same as that of the entire country of Sweden! It is for these reasons that London is seen as the place to be for a variety of industries. A third of the world’s companies have their headquarters in London, making the city an international hub for finance, business and trade.

Doing my Apprenticeship at lookfantastic has helped me realise what I want to do in the future as well as giving me a job that I really enjoy. I have currently nearly finished my level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service. I really enjoy it because it allows me to get experience in my job and get a qualification at the same time. My assessors are supportive of my work, really helpful and fun to work with. Because I do my Apprenticeship while working, I learn about employment rights and responsibilities, gain experience of the work environment, and get paid! My Apprenticeship at lookfantastic has given me experience, a salary and skills, all of which wouldn’t have been available to me if I had gone to college. Beth Curbishley, Customer Service
I really enjoy learning in a salon environment. We have a good balance of theory and practical experience at lookfantastic. The groups are smaller than at a college, meaning that we get loads of support all the time. We learn about ERR, employment rights and responsibilities, which is really useful in the working world.

Katie Piper, Animal Management Katie initially took A-levels at a school in Norwich. However she changed this study path and moved to Easton and Otley College (based in Norfolk) in 2012. Last year, she studied a BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management at Easton and Otley College. She went on to achieve a triple starred distinction and has recently been accepted to study Veterinary Science at the Royal Veterinary College in London. Throughout her course, Katie has had a work placement at her local RSPCA rescue centre where she has worked hard putting into practice her subject knowledge and shown strong initiative. Katie is extremely hard-working and played an active role in her college community – as well as her course and work placement, she was employed by the college to work two days per week as a student ambassador, and took part in interview sessions and college open days to promote the college and its BTEC courses.
Katie picked up a national BTEC award in July 2014, recognising her efforts both academically and as a solid member of the college community. She picked up her award from her namesake, (Katie Piper) at a ceremony in London. After the ceremony, Easton and Otley’s Katie Piper, said, “I am thrilled to have won this award. I’m really looking forward to the future. To win national acclaim like this is the icing on the cake after two great years at a college that I am proud to be associated with.” Her tutor, Tess Southernwood, said, “Katie is is a terrific person and a dedicated student, her future looks incredibly bright.” Easton and Otley College spokesperson, John Nice, said, “Katie has been an exemplary student. She has brought so much to the college life – particularly in her role supporting her fellow students – and we are incredibly proud that she has been given this national acclaim. Great credit must also go to all of her tutors who have supported Katie throughout her journey with the college.”

Looking for your next move? With a great range of courses, fantastic facilities and lecturers with loads of industry experience, Uxbridge College has the answer. Jack, Hair Academy South West My name is Jack and I am just starting my second year level 2 NVQ Apprenticeship in Hairdressing with the Hair Academy South West (HASW). I am really enjoying it and love working with different clients and getting to know their personalities, everyone is different. What I find most helpful is the support and guidance that everyone at the HASW has given me. The “on-the job” training is really helping me mature and grow not only as a hairdresser but as a person. I am working really hard to perfect my knowledge and skills and would really love to see my client base grow within the salon. I enjoy all aspects of my training but my favourite practical work is cutting and styling, as every cut sets me a new challenge.
I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship - my skills and understanding have developed so much and I have been learning from day one with lots of practical training, not just sitting in a classroom! My main goal is to become a senior stylist and would love to work in session styling, but the HASW has also made me think about becoming a hairdressing tutor, although that is a long way off at the moment!

UKSA UKSA is a youth charity offering maritime training courses that lead to careers in watersports and yachting. It offers transformational opportunities to around 9,000 young people a year.
UKSA is unique in lots of ways and as a youth charity we are able to offer that little bit extra, on top of training and qualifications. We are the only training facility in the world that offers the mix of courses we do, helping everyone access maritime training from young offenders up to superyacht captains. We are the only place that offers a Superyacht Cadetship which can be applied for through UCAS. More RYA qualifications are earned at UKSA than anywhere else. And what’s more, when you can start as an entry level novice and keep coming back to top up your qualifications as you progress through your career.

Our campus is inspiring in itself, right on the waterfront, fully residential, bustling and busy with good camaraderie and everything you need under one roof. Our courses are not just theory based - students do lots of practical work and spend time out at sea. What could be more invigorating than clocking up your sea miles and navigating the ocean waves?!
We look after our students. We have bursaries available but we also have structured payment options on some courses. Our career courses are fully residential so you don’t have to worry about food or accommodation – just concentrate on your course. People come to UKSA for the training but they leave with many other benefits and can often walk straight into a job. Find out more at www.uksa.org.
APPLYING – EASY? TRICKY? COMPLEX?
We try to make the application process easy for new students but it’s not simply a case of filling in an online form and then turning up a few weeks later. We take all our bookings over the phone once the applicant has spoken at length to our experienced course advisors – to make sure we are fitting the right student to the right course. For some courses there is a selection process. We also recommend coming to our monthly open days to see the campus and find out more.

I’VE HEARD ABOUT TRAINEESHIPS, BUT WHAT ARE THEY? ARE THEY RELEVANT TO ME?
I WANT TO DROP OUT OF COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY AND TRY AN APPRENTICESHIP INSTEAD – IS THAT A GOOD IDEA?
Traineeships are short courses that have been created for young people who lack qualifications and experience of the workplace, and who want to get an edge over the competition when applying for an Apprenticeship or job. Lots of places call their traineeships ‘Pre-Apprenticeship’ courses.
Many people feel pressured into going to college or starting university, but this isn’t necessarily the right thing for everyone. In the same way, you might have dreamed about going to university, but then found that it’s not actually what you expected, or that you are struggling with the workload.
If you’re 16-18 without a level 3 qualification, or 19-24 without a level 2, and you have little to no work experience, a Traineeship could give you that boost you need. They’ll last 6 weeks to 5 months and will cost you absolutely nothing. You won’t get a qualification at the end (unless you lack core English or Maths qualifications), but will gain some vital experience that will look great on your Apprenticeship or job application form.
Apprenticeships are a great alternative to learning in an academic environment purely because you still gain qualifications, but its practical learning, and you don’t necessarily have to sit in a classroom all day. They’re obviously still hard work, but some people much prefer this style of learning.
Confusingly, some companies call their Apprenticeship schemes Traineeships, so make sure you check before you apply for a role that you actually qualify for it!
WHAT A LEVELS SHOULD I BE STUDYING SO I CAN GET A UNIVERSITY PLACE?
If you are thinking about dropping out, the first thing you should bear in mind is that it is a BIG decision. You are effectively giving up weeks, months or years of work. That being said, if you are sure that college/uni really isn’t for you then it might not be worth sticking to a career path and potentially jeopardizing your career by not performing to your max potential.
I DON’T THINK I CAN AFFORD TO GO TO STUDY, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
This is something at the Money is a big concern forefront of many students’ for a lot of people who are minds at the minute considering university, as because of stories in the well as their families! Ever news about people taking since fees rose, some have the wrong A levels and been struggling to afford to getting rejected from uni. both go away to university The big thing you need to as well as live in any sort makes sure of is that you take subjects that you think you will of comfortable condition. Don’t worry though, you won’t have be interested in and will help you in your career at a later date. to pay everything at once, every young person applying to Some courses have specific A levels that you must or must university is entitled to apply for a student loan which will cover not take in order to obtain a place. If you know what you want your course, accommodation and living costs, and that you can to be doing at university, it’s a good idea to look up what the pay back gradually across your career. accepted courses are. For example, if you’re thinking about doing a chemistry degree it’s probably a good idea to take a If you don’t fancy university or college and want to earn some money instead, Apprenticeships might provide the answer. You science subject or two. can both gain a qualification, and earn some money while you Several universities have ‘black lists’ of A level subjects that you do so, which many see as much better than shelling out money can’t take more than one of if you want to obtain a place. At the minute minimum wage for an apprentice of the more famous ones is Cambridge, which specifies that aged 16-18 is £2.68/ph, and is the standard minimum wage for you must take at least two ‘traditional academic subjects’ and adults for those over 19, or who are 19 and have completed the lists a number of less appropriate subjects. It’s a good idea to first year of their Apprenticeship. look up what subjects your chosen university accepts before applying!
