TRAILER
SYNOPSIS: Shirin is struggling to become an ideal Persian daughter,
politically correct bisexual and hip young Brooklynite. But she’s not quite Persian enough, not quite gay enough, not quite anything enough. She fails miserably in her attempt at all identities, and being without a cliché to hold onto can be a lonely experience. After being dumped by her girlfriend Maxine, Shirin faces an unimaginable task: trading the idyllic lesbian haven of Park Slope for a shared artist’s loft in Bushwick. Unable to let go of the memories of their excruciating highs and lows, the endearingly superficial narcissist finds herself plotting to win back her ex.

LETTER TO ANITA WEBSITE 2014, USA, 55 minutes Dir. Andrea Meyerson Writer: Ronni Sanlo, Lisa Dickey SYNOPSIS: In the heart-wrenching documentary LETTER TO ANITA, award-winning filmmaker Andrea Meyerson explores the painful legacy of singer Anita Bryant’s infamous anti-gay campaign of the late 1970s. Narrated by Emmy-nominated actress Meredith Baxter, LETTER TO ANITA tells the story of Ronni Sanlo, a married mother of two who came out as a lesbian and divorced her husband, losing custody of her children as a result—an injustice that propelled Ronni into a life of LGBT activism. With jaw-dropping archival footage, interviews with Ronni and her son, and the first on-camera interview with Anita Bryant’s son Robert Green, LETTER TO ANITA paints a riveting portrait of what anti-gay discrimination can do to families—and how its destructive power can ultimately backfire on itself. MAMA RAINBOW TRAILER 2012, China, 80 min. Dir.: Fan Popo SYNOPSIS: Fan Popo’s touching documentary Mama Rainbow opens with a series of street interviews with passersby about their feelings on homosexuality. The filmmaker follows this with a more pointed question, one which leads us into the heart of Mama Rainbow: “What if your son or daughter told you they were gay?” In the film, we meet six different Chinese mothers, all the parents of gay and lesbian children, who share their experiences with the camera. Though the specifics of their stories are all quite different, each of the mothers experiences their own version of a “coming out” tale—recognizing, acknowledging, and accepting their children’s sexualities. Mama Rainbow paints a hopeful portrait of the slowly changing mindset of a culture where the fear of persecution and rejection still makes coming out and living openly a great challenge.

THE CIRCLE 2014,Switzerland, 102 m in. Dir.: Kate Johnson, Shauna MacDonald
TRAILER
SYNOPSIS: Founded in the early 1940s, the network around the magazine ‘Der Kreis’ (’The Circle’) was the only gay organisation to survive the Nazi regime. It blossomed during the post-war years into an internationally renowned underground club. Legendary masked balls at the Theater am Neumarkt in Zurich provided 800 visitors from all over Europe with a secret and safe space to act out their ‘otherness’ in a self-determined way. It is there that timid teacher Ernst Ostertag falls in love with drag star Röbi Rapp. Ernst searches for a way to fight for his gayness to be accepted as normal outside the boundaries of ‘The Circle’ network without losing his employment as a teacher. Röbi champions the joint fruition of their love. Following a murder in the gay community, violent repression against gay people also endangers ‘The Circle’ network. Stefan Haupt’s new film uncovers the fascinating universe of one of the first gay liberation communities. Enriched by impressive conversational records with Ernst Ostertag and Röbi Rapp, the film depicts a decades-long love story – made taboo by society – and reveals the couple’s inspiring self-knowledge and courage.

TRAILER
SYNOPSIS: Strength, power, dominance and masculinity. Buzz words seen in the majority of gay male personal ads. This documentary explores how dominance and power influence human sexuality in general and gay male sexuality in particular. Thought provoking and controversial, candid and sometimes disturbing yet brutally honest in its approach, this film dares to shatter illusions and raise complex issues regarding gay male sexuality. The director encounters 15 gay men whose sexuality revolves around power, dominance and control. They allow the camera to capture portions of their sexual interactions. In addition to this R-rated footage, insightful conversations, some of which are captured after actual sexual encounters provide unusual access to the deeper, psychological aspects of sexuality. Interview after interview we hear their revelations, fantasies and obsessions about sex, masculinity, power and dominance. It is out of these illuminating conversations that form the basis of this documentary. From influential academics to sex symbols and everyone in between, we gain a range of perspectives into the maze of conflicting attitudes regarding masculinity, power and sexual behavior.
