, Marisa Chanin, B.S. 17 President’s Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year Award Winner

What does preeminence mean?

u. ed fs

It means some of the finest arts programs in the world. It means being one of only four U.S. universities to receive the most prestigious award for internationalization. It means elite research and the world record-breaking National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. It means a $10 billion economic impact on our state. And it means stellar alumni shaping the future like Marisa Chanin. Preeminence means Florida State University.

u

One of the nation’s great universities: wide-ranging in academic excellence, tenaciously entrepreneurial, and a trailblazer in preparing one of the most diverse student populations in the nation to become globally competent and competitive. Preeminence means vaulting 17 spots in three years among Top 50 public universities. It means a 4-year graduation rate that is 15th in the country.

Upcoming Winter Performances

A

s we approach the midway point of the 2018-19 Season, the performances for January and February have some unique highlights for our audience members. The following provides insight on the 11 concerts between now and March 1: Skerryvore are twice winners of Scotland’s Traditional Music Live Act of the Year Award. Parsons Dance Company is anchored in a desire that engages audiences with the joy of dance through David Parsons’ belief of having fun through the art form. Béla Fleck’s current Grammy® count is 15, with 30 nominations in more categories than any other instrumentalist in Grammy history. And, Abigail Washburn who was named a TED Fellow in 2012, was recently named the first US-China Fellow at Vanderbilt University. Joshua Bell was the focus of a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post story in 2007, centering on him performing incognito in a Washington, D.C. metro station that sparked an ongoing conversation regarding artistic reception and context. The Temptations and The Four Tops were part of the first AfricanAmerican-owned record label to reach widespread national acclaim and part of a movement where Black popular music would never again be dismissed as a minority taste aesthetically or commercially. Cashore Marionettes’ Joseph Cashore has a Pew Fellowship for Performance Art based on artistic accomplishment and received a Henson Foundation Grant to promote puppetry to adult audiences. PRISM features performances that encompass Chamber Winds, Symphonic Band, jazz ensembles and, of course, the Marching Chiefs in a fantastic, fresh effort that’s not to be missed! Farruquito was immersed in the purest form of flamenco founded by his grandfather, “El Farruco,” one of the greatest dancers in the history of flamenco. John Williams became the Boston Pops conductor in 1980 as the most highly acclaimed composer in Hollywood. Today, with 51 Academy Award nominations, he is the most-nominated living person in Academy history. His work through film scores has led to 24 Grammys, 4 Golden Globes and 5 Oscars. Julian Bliss began playing the clarinet at the age of 4, and The Julian Bliss Septet started out exploring the music of Benny Goodman—a passion of Julian’s since the age of 7—and showcases some of the best tunes of this era with authenticity and a modern twist. James Taylor captures the essence of Tom Rush when he says, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.” We look forward to sharing these performances with you. Thank you,

Michael Blachly Director, Opening Nights at Florida State University OPENINGNIGHTS.FSU.EDU | 5

folk, traditional, rock, pop

“The most promising young band in Scotland today.” — Mick MacNeil, Simple Minds Twice winners of Scotland’s Traditional Music ‘Live Act of the Year’ Award (2016 & 2011), Skerryvore have been on a meteoric journey that has taken them from the remote Isle of Tiree on to International tours that have included performances in New York City’s Central Park; The Ryder Cup, Louisville; and the Shanghai Expo, China. Skerryvore kicked off 2018 with an astounding performance in front of 12,000 revelers at Inverness Hogmanay celebrations and released their latest album, EVO, in June. EVO is a mix of songs and tunes that typically migrate from ‘big blast’ numbers to heartfelt, reflective tracks. It includes the previously released single “Live Forever” and their latest release, “Take My Hand.” “Live Forever” provided the soundtrack for the Scottish tourism promotional campaign ‘Wild About Argyll’ and hit No.1 in the iTunes World Music chart. Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine), have a musical partnership like no other. Béla Fleck is a 15-time Grammy® Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres, and Abigail Washburn a singersongwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds. The Temptations & The Four Tops

GENRE

R&B, Motown

For more than 50 years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with their series of smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the world. Beyond the fabulous singing, The Temps became known for smooth stepping and flawless presentations. The Temptations Walk became a staple of American style—flair, flash and class. Millions of fans saw The Temptations as their cultural heroes. With some of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers, including 24 Top 40 pop hits, The Four Tops were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. In Rolling Stone’s 2004 article “The Immortals—The Greatest Artists Of All Time,” Smokey Robinson remembered: “They were the best in my neighborhood in Detroit when I was growing up [and] The Four Tops will always be one of the biggest and the best groups ever. Their music is forever.” Continued on page 45

Cashore Marionettes

GENRE

puppetry

In Life in Motion, Joseph Cashore presents his collection of marionette masterworks. Characters of depth, integrity, and humanity are portrayed unlike anything else in theater today. This performance is a series of scenes taken from everyday life and set to beautiful music by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi, Strauss, and Copland. Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, humor, pathos, classic music and poetic insight, The Cashore Marionettes take the audience on a journey that celebrates the richness of life. Life in Motion is a powerful, entertaining, surprising, theatrically satisfying, one-of-akind evening for more mature audiences. Saturday’s family friendly matinee, Simple Gifts, is a series of touching portrayals and poignant scenes from everyday life set to stunning music. Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, beautiful music, theatrical illusion, and artistic insight, the original vignettes presented in Simple Gifts provide an entertaining and sensitive vision of what it is to be human. The performance explores a range of emotions with characters and actions that are amazingly convincing.

The Tallahassee Democrat might put it best: “The PRISM shows are built on a more-is-more philosophy…PRISM’s contrast between traditional fare and more experimental groups may be one of the reasons behind the program’s success. Its multifaceted nature makes PRISM a gem among music lovers. Because of its design, [the performance] offers a unique show depending on where an audience member sits—those in the balcony will be nearer to certain ensembles than those in other sections, and vice versa.” So come experience this unique event that lauds our students and faculty. It’s fantastic, fresh, and not to be missed!

His scores for Star Wars, Schindler’s List, Harry Potter, E.T. (The Extraterrestrial), Jurassic Park and the Indiana Jones films have made him a household name. Under the baton of Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops celebrates a nearly 40-year association with John and his incredible music in an evening featuring excerpts from the composer’s best-loved scores, as well as some lesser-known gems. The Julian Bliss Septet

A Tribute to Benny Goodman “...captures the vibrant joy of a simple unadorned melody played with feeling and conviction.” — Critical Jazz Gracing the stages of Ronnie Scott’s legendary jazz club to the Wigmore Hall in London, Bermuda Jazz Festival, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Julian Bliss Septet has shared their uplifting, classy, humorous shows and exceptional musicianship around the world since their formation in 2010. Recreating the exciting sound of swing from the 30’s and 40’s, Julian Bliss leads his sextet through some of the great tunes of the swing era, staying true to the authentic feel but adding a modern twist. Julian became enamored with the performances of Benny Goodman at the age of 7, and in 2010 decided to form a group to perform Goodman’s music. The album A Tribute to Benny Goodman was recorded in 2011 and released on Signum Records in June 2012 to critical acclaim from both jazz and classical reviewers.

ALEC DALGLISH

In addition to performing with Skerryvore,

Alec was brought up in Livingston, West Lothian where he began his musical education playing euphonium under the instruction of Mark Traynor. These lessons along with watching his father sing and play guitar at many house parties sparked an interest in music and he began learning how to play the guitar at the age of 14. There was much to be learned from stealing the records and CDs from his parents’ collection, forging a great love for classic pop, rock and folk music of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, which would later become a huge influence on his songwriting. Alec was named “Frankie Miller Songwriter of the Year” at the first Scottish New Music Awards and finds the songwriting and recording process the most enjoyable, rewarding and exciting part of his career.

CRAIG ESPIE

Craig (AKA – ‘The Angry Fiddler’) grew up

ceilidh band and a very short spell studying Product Design Engineering at Strathclyde

University, Craig decided to embark on a career as a musician and began fiddle lessons

under the tutelage of one of the country’s best known performers, Alistair McCulloch.

Craig can usually be found on the laptop

working as a graphic/web designer and has produced work for a large number of wellknown brands including Skerryvore, Oban

Live, Tiree Music Festival, Tide Lines, Trail

West, Tyree Gin, The Lochside Hotel Islay and many more.

DANIEL GILLESPIE

Raised on the island of Tiree, Daniel was one of many youngsters fortunate to be taught accordion by the legendary Gordon Connell alongside his brother Martin and friend Angus MacPhail (Skipinnish). On leaving Tiree, Daniel chose initially to pursue a career in sports that led him to being a youth coach for Glasgow Rangers for four years before he made the commitment to music full time in 2007. Daniel is also a co-founder and director of the multi-award winning Tiree Music Festival as well as Argyll’s largest live music event, Oban Live.

Scott is also involved in the Scottish Christian music scene and performs regularly with Steph MacLeod and friends, incorporating modern Celtic music within the Worship setting. He also runs Oak Ridge Studios from his house, producing, recording, and mixing music for other artists. Scott has worked with acts such as Anxo Lorenzo, Project SMOK, Assynt, Gnoss, Skipinnish, Josie Duncan, Pablo Lafunete, The Alyn Cosker Group, Hannah Rarity, Christy Scott and many more.

MARTIN GILLESPIE

Hailing from the island of Tiree, Martin followed in his brother’s footsteps learning accordion under Gordon Connell. Music wasn’t Martin’s initial career choice. He opted for sports for a short period and then plumbing before going on to study music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for three years. As well as being a full-time member of Skerryvore, Martin is a co-founder of Oban Live and part of the team for Tiree Music festival, managing all things financial. He can often be found at the bar, in the gym or lying in the sun!

JODIE BREMANESON

Raised in rural Aberdeenshire, Jodie discovered the bass in his mid-teens and soon became involved in the North East music scene before developing his passion at the University of Strathclyde, earning a BA in Music Performance and Composition. In demand as a bassist across many musical genres, he has performed and recorded with such acts as hip hop artist Kobi Onyame, Neil Primrose (Travis), Unoma Okudo, Jill Jackson, Ted McKenna (Sensational Alex Harvey Band), Federation of The Disco Pimp, Mark OPENINGNIGHTS.FSU.EDU | 35

ALAN SCOBIE

Alan is from Ayrshire Scotland, and began playing piano at age 11. After many years performing in the corporate field and always with a keen interest in recording, the opportunity came up to take over the former Wet Wet Wet studio ‘pet sounds’ in Glasgow. Alan ran the studio commercially for 10 years and during that time signed several publishing deals in both Sweden and Nashville as a songwriter in his own right. After moving recording studios in 2008, Skerryvore came to record the Dougie McLean song ‘Caledonia’. The working relationship established during that session led to being asked to produce the Skerryvore album, and after the subsequent album launch, Alan joined Skerryvore full time in 2010, continuing to produce all subsequent albums.

FRASER WEST

Fraser started his musical career at the age of 5, performing on stage with Newland Concert Brass junior band at a concert in Bathgate. From there he took up lessons on the cornet and trumpet and continued them all the way to 6th year at high school. Throughout his school years, he performed in the school wind and jazz ensembles and also the West Lothian regional ensembles on both trumpet and drums. These groups allowed Fraser to travel to Germany, France and America, igniting the spark for touring life. When he was 16 and on a family holiday on Tiree, he was asked to tutor drums at the Tiree Feis. During this summer, Fraser and Daniel began to perform together and the foundations of Skerryvore were formed. Fraser attended the University of Strathclyde, studying a BA in Applied Music, with drums being his first instrument. During this time he joined Glasgow-based rock band LEXXI.

Artistic Director David Parsons, who, for more than 30 years, has combined his choreographic gifts and talent for training highly skilled dancers with a real passion for the art form. DAVID PARSONS (Artistic Director/Co Founder) has enjoyed a remarkable career as a director, choreographer, performer, master teacher and producer. Raised in Kansas City, Parsons made it to New York at the age of 17 when he received a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey School. After Ailey, he became an understudy with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and then joined the company as a principal dancer. He stayed for eight years. During summers, he toured with MOMIX; he appeared with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris in the first White Oak tour; and he launched his choreographic career by setting work on the Taylor Company and on the National Ballet of Canada, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Batsheva Dance Company, and the Paris Opera Ballet. After leaving the Taylor company, Parsons was a guest artist with New York City Ballet for four years before his artistic prowess led him to undertake such diverse projects as choreographing Aida at Arena di Verona and producing and co-choreographing María de Buenos Aires at the Skirball Center, as well as creating the choreography for Fool’s Fire, a 1992 film directed by Julie Taymor. Perhaps one of his most thrilling assignments was choreographing and directing the dance elements for Times Square 2000, the 24-hour festivities in Times Square celebrating the turn of the Millennium. Parsons continues his involvement in diverse projects, with his most recent gig taking him to Japan, where he choreographed A Knight’s Tale, a new musical theater work directed by John Caird, who

David Parsons

previously directed the Broadway and West End productions of Les Misérables and London National Theatre’s production of Candide. Staged at Tokyo’s iconic Imperial Theatre from July 25 through August 29, 2018, the work featured Japanese pop stars in leading roles. In addition to the more than 75 works that he has created for Parsons Dance, Parsons has received commissions from American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, the Spoleto Festival, and Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam, among dozens of others. Heralded by The New York Times as “one of the great movers of modern dance,” Parsons has received many accolades throughout his career, including three Choreography Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment of the Arts; the American Choreography Award; the Dance Magazine Award; a Howard Gilman Fellowship, and the Dance Masters of America Annual Award. In May 2018, he received the Capezio Award, one of the most prestigious awards in dance. HOWELL BINKLEY (Resident Lighting Designer/Co-Founder) is the proud cofounder of Parsons Dance for which he has designed more than 70 pieces. His Broadway designs include: Come From Away (2017 Tony nomination), Allegiance, After Midnight (2014 Tony nomination), How to Succeed… (2011 Tony nomination), West Side Story (2009 Tony nomination), Gypsy starring Patti LuPone, In The Heights (2008 Tony nomination), Avenue Q, The Full Monty, Parade, Kiss Of The Spider Woman (1993 Tony nomination). He has made extensive regional and dance works for Alvin Ailey, American Ballet Theatre, Hubbard Street, and The Joffrey Ballet’s Billboards. He is a five-time Helen Hayes Award recipient and received the 1993 Sir Laurence Olivier Award and the Canadian Dora Award for Kiss of The Spider Woman. Howell also received the 2006 Henry Hewes Design Award; the 2006 Outer Critics Circle Award; and the 2006 Tony Award for Jersey Boys. Echo in the Valley is the followup to Béla and Abigail’s acclaimed, self-titled debut that earned the 2016 Grammy for Best Folk Album. This time around, they had strict rules for recording: all sounds had to be created by them, the only instruments used were banjos (they have seven between them, ranging from a ukulele to an upright bass banjo), and they must be able to perform every recorded song live. Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here, a benefit there, or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla & Abigail would begin making music together as a duo. Fleck has the virtuosic, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. His collaborations range from his ground-breaking standard-setting ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones to a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments. From writing concertos for full symphony orchestra, exploring the banjo’s African roots, to jazz duos with Chick Corea, many tout that Béla Fleck is the world’s premier banjo player.

Washburn has the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter who has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums. She has done fascinating work in folk musical diplomacy in China, presented an original theatrical production, and has contributed to singular side groups Uncle Earl and The WuForce. In addition to being named a TED Fellow in 2012, Abigail was recently named the first US-China Fellow at Vanderbilt University, in addition to Carolina Performing Arts/Andrew W. With one eye on using the banjo to showcase America’s rich heritage and the other pulling the noble instrument from its most familiar arena into new and unique realms, Béla & Abigail meet in the mean, head-on, to present music that feels wildly innovative and familiar at the same time. Whether at home, on stage or on record, their deep bond, combined with the way their distinct musical personalities and banjo styles interact, makes theirs a picking partnership unlike any other on the planet.

SAM HAYWOOD

Sam Haywood has performed to critical acclaim in many of the world’s major concert halls. The Washington Post hailed his “dazzling, evocative playing” and “lyrical sensitivity” and The New York Times acclaimed his “passionate flair and sparkling clarity.” He embraces a wide spectrum of the piano repertoire and is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician or with accompanying Lieder. He has had a regular duo partnership with Joshua Bell since 2010 and often performs with cellist Steven Isserlis. He has recorded two solo albums for Hyperion, one featuring the piano music of Julius Isserlis (grandfather of Steven Isserlis) and the other Charles Villiers Stanford’s preludes. His enthusiasm for period instruments led to a recording on Chopin’s own Pleyel piano. In 2013 Haywood co-founded Solent Music Festival in the U.K. The annual Lymingtonbased festival features highly varied programs by internationally renowned artists with projects in the local community. Artists have included the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Alina Ibragimova, Mark Padmore and the Endellion Quartet. Haywood was mentored by David Hartigan, Paul Badura-Skoda and Maria Curcio. Following his early success in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, the Royal Philharmonic Society awarded him the Julius Isserlis Scholarship. He studied both at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, of which he is an Associate (ARAM).

THE TEMPTATIONS

The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964, however, that the Smokey Robinson writtenand-produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, many of which...”My Girl,” for instance...attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby;,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain”...the hits kept on coming. The classic lineup was Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and

arts learning experiences that will help a variety of students develop cutting-edge aesthetic and cognitive techniques for modern dance. Members of the dance company will visit Gretchen Everhart School to work with special needs students over the course of three workshops. With the help of the Florida Autism Center along with grant funding from the Council On Culture & Arts, these students of all ages and abilities will receive specialized training in the art of dance. The company will also host a master class with FSU and FAMU dance majors, showing them dance practices unique to sensory-friendly performances. “I realized that there was a real need for programming specifically

tailored for the ASD [Autism Sensory Disorder] community. For this

particular population, the arts are a powerful tool for self-expression and communication...my goal is to provide opportunities for more people to experience the wonders of dance.” - David Parsons

SPONSORS

Opening Nights in Class is striving to expand arts programming to more students in Leon County and the surrounding areas. If you have any questions about how you, your school, students or community group can be involved, please contact Calla MacNamara at cmacnamara@fsu.edu or 850-644-2469.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Florida State University’s Opening Nights partners with the Florida Center for Reading Research to develop educational materials for K-12 students that enhance learning beyond the performance. Created and designed for each individual performance and grade appropriate, these original resources use evidence-based educational strategies that complement and enrich traditional literacy curriculum. This collaborative partnership is enriching students and educators learning experience by inspiring creativity and achievement through the performing arts.

The Florida Center for Reading Research is a multidisciplinary research center at Florida State University that explores all aspects of reading research—basic research into literacy-related skills for typically developing readers and those who struggle, studies of effective prevention and intervention, and psychometric work on formative assessment.
