What does preeminence mean?
u. ed fs
It means some of the finest arts programs in the world. It means being one of only four U.S. universities to receive the most prestigious award for internationalization. It means elite research and the world record-breaking National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. It means a $10 billion economic impact on our state. And it means stellar alumni shaping the future like Marisa Chanin. Preeminence means Florida State University.
u
One of the nation’s great universities: wide-ranging in academic excellence, tenaciously entrepreneurial, and a trailblazer in preparing one of the most diverse student populations in the nation to become globally competent and competitive. Preeminence means vaulting 17 spots in three years among Top 50 public universities. It means a 4-year graduation rate that is 15th in the country.
Numerous Performances Still Ahead
A
s the 2018–19 Season concludes, I, again, extend my appreciation for your attendance, input and overall support of Opening Nights.
During March and April the performances represent a broad spectrum of performing arts genres, including comedy, classical recital, world music, slack key and gypsy guitar, spoken word, Americana, bluegrass and pop. Some artists yet to come are highly recognizable, such as Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Webb, David Sedaris and Rosanne Cash and others are highly-acclaimed, emerging artists such as Makana, Taylor Tomlinson, Molly Tuttle, Gina Chavez and DakhaBrakha. Whichever you choose to attend, you won’t be disappointed with the quality and caliber of the performers. The artists are at the top of their respective areas. Among the upcoming events is the Chain of Parks Art Festival Event, which we are able to offer because of the generous endowment gift provided by Kelly and Laurie Dozier. I’m pleased to provide details on the Keynote Speaker, Joe Hutto. Joe has a long history in the Tallahassee community and is a nationally recognized artist in photography, painting and bronze sculpture. Further, Joe is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and author. His presentation, which opens the Chain of Parks Art Festival weekend, will be one artist’s perspective on the personal challenges that it takes to prepare for, and sustain, a life as an artist. I look forward to seeing you at our March or April events. Sincerely,
Michael Blachly Director, Opening Nights at Florida State University OPENINGNIGHTS.FSU.EDU | 5

Makana Described as “dazzling” by The New York Times, Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, composer and activist who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. His guitar playing has been featured on three Grammynominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film The Descendants. A protégé of the Hawaiian slack key guitar legends, including Bobby Moderow Jr. and the late master Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, Makana has dedicated his life to perpetuating as well as evolving this traditional Hawaiian art form. Slack key or Ki Ho’alu, which is nearly 200 years old and indigenous to Hawai’i, was created by ‘ohana (families) on the different islands as a very personal folk music expression of their beautiful surroundings and way of life. Taylor started doing stand up at 16 years old and has been letting it slowly ruin her life ever since. She is one of the country’s youngest touring headliners, delighting audiences coast-to-coast with her sharp crowdwork, biting wit, and wonderfully self-deprecating point of view.

Molly Tuttle “Her songs ... much like her demeanor, tend to have an inward-looking elegance to them; they’re the outward expressions of a searching mind and a longtime dedication to cultivating her craft.” — NPR’s Jewly Hight At only 25 Molly Tuttle has made history. She won “Guitar Player of the Year” from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) in 2017 and 2018, making history as the first woman to be nominated for the honor much less winning it. Other accolades in 2018 include: Americana Music Association naming her “Instrumentalist of the Year” and Folk Alliance International awarding her “Song of the Year” for “You Didn’t Call My Name” during its International Folk Music Awards.

Gina Chavez “Chavez’s voice is perfectly suited to reflect all of those experiences and to take us to places where we dare to let our emotional guards down.” — NPR’s Felix Contreras Gina Chavez is blending the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. A 10-time Austin Music Award winner, Chavez and her band are touring her new EP Lightbeam, which was released in September 2018. The five-song collection is a departure for Chavez who is known for her signature style of bilingual Latin folk-pop. The 2015 Austin Musician of the Year traded her acoustic guitar for the smooth tones of a Gibson hollow body, and called upon producer Dwight A. Baker (MISSIO, Alpha Rev, The Wind and The Wave, Josh Abbott Band) to lay down five soulful and diverse songs that expand her previous work yet boast the same lively and sophisticated spirit that her fans have grown to love. DakhaBrakha “Ukrainian folk drone Björkpunk quartet DakhaBrakha went into Bonnaroo as unknowns but ended up with one of the most receptive crowds of the weekend.” — Rolling Stone A music quartet from Kiev, Ukraine, DakhaBrakha reflects the fundamental elements of sound and soul—Ukrainian “ethno chaos”—to create a world of unexpected new music. DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director, Vladyslav Troitskyi, and given the name that means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element. Continued on page 51

Makana Continued from pg. 13
It is characterized by “slacking” the strings to open chords, thus freeing the hands to alter the sound whilst self-accompanying with a triad of alternating bass patterns, faux rhythms and sweet melodies evocative of island atmospheres. Think “three guitars in one!” Makana’s captivating and wide-ranging performance style has led him to share the stage with Jason Mraz, Joe Walsh, and Jack Johnson, and to open for music legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello. Makana has performed in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House. In 2011, at the apex of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, Makana’s song “We Are The Many” went viral on YouTube garnering
more than half a million views and was coined the “Occupy Anthem” by Rolling Stone magazine. Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana grew up on the shores of Waikiki amid the diversity of legends such as Don Ho and Bruno Mars. Makana—whose name means “a gift given freely”—began singing when he was 7 years old, took up ‘ukulele at 9 and began learning the ancient art of slack key at 11. By 14 he was performing professionally, and before long, playing five nights a week. He earned a reputation as the youngest virtuoso of slack key and his reputation spread like molten volcanic lava throughout the islands. The focus of Makana’s art is to celebrate the beauty of tradition while exploring new, relevant perceptions, sounds and themes; he has created his own style of “slack-rock.” In
his music he often honors his forebearers—the vintage Hawaiian music legends and the rock poet idols of the 60s—paying homage to the kupuna (elders) who carry within their Beings the cultural wisdom passed down through generations.
The Michael Feinstein Trio Continued from pg. 17
Feinstein boasts multiplatinum-selling recordings and his live concerts have spanned the globe, including iconic venues such as The White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Feinstein founded the Great American Songbook Foundation in 2007. The Foundation works to preserve and elevate America’s rich musical legacy by curating physical artifacts of its creators and performers; offering programs for the public and research opportunities for scholars, historians and performers; and providing educational opportunities for student musicians, including the annual high school Songbook Academy®. He is the Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony, making his conducting debut to celebrated critical acclaim. Feinstein also serves as Artistic Director of the Palladium Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana, Artistic Director for Carnegie Hall’s “Standard Time with Michael Feinstein” in conjunction with ASCAP and is the director of the Jazz and Popular Song Series at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. “Feinstein’s at the Nikko,” his nightclub in San Francisco’s Nikko Hotel has presented the top talents of pop and jazz since 2013. He debuted at “Feinstein’s/54 Below,” his new club in New York in late 2015. His first venue in New York, “Feinstein’s at the Regency,” featured major entertainers such as Rosemary Clooney, Glen Campbell, Barbara Cook, Diahann Carroll, Jane Krakowski, Lea Michele, Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz and Alan Cumming from 1999 to 2012.
Playing slack key since the age of 11, Makana has evolved this traditional hawaiian art form into his own dynamic, high-octane style, coined “Slack Rock”: slack key infused with elements of bluegrass, rock, blues and raggae. Photo by Jeff Mallin

his album with songwriting icon Jimmy Webb, Only One Life – The Songs of Jimmy Webb, was named one of “10 Best CDs of the Year” by USA Today. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Feinstein started playing piano by ear at 5 years old. After high school graduation, he moved to Los Angeles. The widow of legendary concert pianist-actor Oscar Levant introduced him to Ira Gershwin in July 1977. Feinstein became Gershwin’s assistant for six years, which earned him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, many of which he has since performed and recorded. Gershwin’s influence provided a solid base upon which Feinstein evolved into a captivating performer, composer and arranger of his own original music.
Lulo Reinhardt & Daniel Stetter Continued from pg. 19
LULO REINHARDT Lulo Reinhardt is a third-generation Gypsy Jazz guitar master from Germany. His great uncle Django Reinhardt left behind an indelible musical legacy, introducing and defining a passionate style of Gypsy Jazz guitar that was astonishing in the 1930s and is still revered and emulated today. Lulo has retained the incredible Reinhardt soul, speed and dexterity with an updated repertoire. He is a spontaneous and spirited musician whose curiosity took him to southern
Spain in search of flamenco roots and to South America, exploring various musical styles of Latin Jazz. By 2002, he was ready to take his place as a bandleader, founding the Lulo Reinhardt Project. They recorded the highly acclaimed Project No. 1 in 2002, and Project No. 2 in 2005, reflecting his passion for Latin music. In 2007, Saga Instruments of San Francisco, Calif., made the first Lulo Reinhardt Model Gitane 310, modeled on the classic Gypsy guitars. This inspired Lulo to compose more Swing material, which he combined with Latin music, prompting him to change the name of his group to the Lulo Reinhardt Latin Swing Project. They recorded their first CD in 2008. In the beginning, he played in Europe with an all-German band but later spent considerable time in Australia, forming a new band of German and Australian musicians. They have recorded several CDs, and toured internationally. Lulo has performed on multiple tours as a soloist with International Guitar Night between 2009 and 2016, in the United States, Canada, the U.K. and Germany. He was the artistic director, host and performing guitarist for the 2017 and 2018 International Guitar Night tours.
DANIEL STELTER Daniel Stelter’s unique guitar style has made him a landmark musician in Germany’s jazz scene. His sound encompasses jazz, pop and classical music. Daniel’s passion for music started early. He began playing the classical guitar at the age of 8, and was soon introduced to jazz, rock and pop music by his older brothers. As a teenager he spent hours meticulously listening and playing to tunes from records and tapes. He won acclaim at contests like “Jugend musiziert“ and “Jugend jazzt.“ By 17, Daniel was a member of the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer. During that time, he toured through Southeast Europe and recorded a CD. After his graduation he studied jazz guitar with Norbert Scholly at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz but has never lost track of the classical guitar.

the ZYX sampler “World of Acoustic Guitars.” Daniel formed a quartet with Ulf Kleiner (piano), Tommy Baldu (drums) and Michael Pauker (bass), which has already released three records: Homebrew Songs (2009), Krikelkrakel (2012) and Little Planets (2015). The quartet’s sound is a symbiosis of classical guitar with a touch of electronic music, a soundscape of cool beats, and a well-balanced dose of funk and soul. He is a permanent member of the RingsgwandlBand, frequently touring through Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and a permanent member of the band cast for the German TVshow Sing meinen Song hosted by Xavier Naidoo on the private channel VOX. In 2016, Daniel was requested as guitar player for the NDR-BigBand, accompanying jazz legend Al Jarreau on his tour through Europe, staging at Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Olympia in Paris, Opera Garnier in Monte Carlo, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Performing Arts Center in Kristiansand, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Philharmonie in Berlin and Kongresshaus in Zürich.

MARKO HALANEVYCH (vocals, arbuka, tabla, accordion)
Continued from pg. 33
After experimenting with Ukrainian folk music, the band has added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, thus creating its bright, unique and unforgettable sound. They strive to help open up the potential of Ukrainian melodies and to bring it to the hearts and consciousness of the younger generation in Ukraine and the rest of the world.
Born in the village of Krushenivka, in the Vinnitskiy region, Marko is the only representative of the countryside in the band. He graduated from the faculty of the Ukrainian philology, but got into theatre, becoming an actor at the Centre of Contemporary Art “DAKH,” and then accidentally found himself working with the band. The purpose of “Opening Nights in Class” is to educate, illuminate and inspire. Opening Nights at Florida State University is committed to providing our campus and the Big Bend area with educational and engaging opportunities for students and residents so they can enjoy cultural activities. Our series of educational programs provides once-in-a-lifetime experiences through school performances, master classes and workshops with world-renowned performers. Through the generous contribution of these supporters, Opening Nights is able to expand its educational offerings during the 2018–19 Season.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS Makana - Walmart Series
Born and raised in Hawaii, singer-songwriter Makana is known worldwide for his mastery of the traditional “slack key” style of guitar playing. Through a donation from Walmart, Opening Nights In Class is able to have Makana provide arts educational programming to students from five schools in Leon, Jefferson, Gadsden and Wakulla counties. Makana will share his passion for Hawaii’s culture, history, language and natural landscape through song and storytelling to hundreds of students in the Big Bend area.
Matt Haimovitz - FSU Plate Cellist Matt Haimovitz will teach a master class for students of Gregory
Sauer, FSU College of Music Professor of Cello. A musician of the world, Haimovitz boasts acclaimed appearances on every major international concert stage. Daring and original, he is redefining the classical music experience through his series of public pop-up events. Haimovitz will play Bach’s cello suites and commissioned overtures in a series of pop-up events in unconventional locations around the FSU campus and the Tallahassee community. An event is planned for Friday afternoon, March 29 and two events are scheduled for Saturday, March 30. Follow Opening Nights on Facebook and Instagram for the locations and times for this musical variation on the concept of A Moveable Feast.
yMusic
By working with FSU professors and members of yMusic, Opening Nights is able to involve our artists as part of the students’ higher
education experience. yMusic and Evan A. Jones, Professor of Music Theory and Coordinator of the Music Theory and Composition area at FSU’s College of Music, will host a six-day residency in three separate visits over the course of a year. During yMusic’s time in Tallahassee, six FSU Music Composition students will create musical pieces and workshop their works in classroom and studio settings. yMusic will also host a free performance for students in Dohnányi Recital Hall on April 15th at 7:30 pm. This performance will feature the compositions written by the six selected FSU Composition students. yMusic has already visited the FSU campus twice to prepare for this performance and to enhance these students’ learning experience.
DakhaBrakha - AT&T Series Through the support of AT&T, Opening Nights is expanding its community outreach and educational programs to more high school students. Traveling all the way from Kiev, Ukraine, DakhaBrakha will perform a live performance for Lincoln High School students. DakhaBrakha will demonstrate the diverse musical traditions of other cultures through their unique style influenced by Indian, Arabic, African and Russian music.
The Second City - FSU Plate Students from the School of Theatre and the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship will come together for an afternoon to learn the art of improv with members from The Second City. Students will learn to think fast, say “yes” to everything, and employ humor and drama on the spot to create characters, scenes and even original songs. These skills can be practiced universally in our day-to-day lives, making it a valuable learning experience for actors and business entrepreneurs alike!
SPONSORS
Opening Nights in Class is striving to expand arts programming to more students in Leon County and the surrounding areas. If you have any questions about how you, your school, students or community group can be involved, please contact Calla MacNamara at cmacnamara@fsu.edu or 850-644-2469.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
Florida State University’s Opening Nights partners with the Florida Center for Reading Research to develop educational materials for K-12 students that enhance learning beyond the performance. Created and designed for each individual performance and grade appropriate, these original resources use evidence-based educational strategies that complement and enrich traditional literacy curriculum. This collaborative partnership is enriching students and educators learning experience by inspiring creativity and achievement through the performing arts.
The Florida Center for Reading Research is a multidisciplinary research center at Florida State University that explores all aspects of reading research—basic research into literacy-related skills for typically developing readers and those who struggle, studies of effective prevention and intervention, and psychometric work on formative assessment.
