FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY A National Leader in Student Success BEST IN FLORIDA

GLOBAL REACH

Florida State University’s four-year graduation rate of 72 percent places FSU among the Top 10 public universities in the country and is the best in the state of Florida.

FSU’s commitment to increasing the number of students studying abroad was honored with a 2019 Seal of Excellence from the Institute of International Education. The award specifically recognized FSU’s extraordinary global-engagement network.

FSU FRESHMEN FLOURISH

WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH

Florida State’s freshman retention rate is 93 percent, meaning more freshmen than ever are returning for their second year. That places FSU among the Top 20 public universities in the nation for freshman retention!

FSU researchers received a record level of funding from federal, state and private sources in the 2019 fiscal year, bringing $233.6 million to the university to support investigations into areas such as health sciences, high energy physics and marine biology.

THE WORD IS OUT

AN OUTSTANDING VALUE

Prospective students are taking notice of FSU’s preeminence. We received a record-breaking 60,555 first-time freshman applications for the 2019 summer and fall semesters.

Florida State is ranked No. 9 in the nation among public universities that offer high-quality education at an affordable price, according to Kiplinger’s annual list of Best Values in Public Colleges.

Spring into Great Performances

M

any of you, our valued audience members, have asked about enjoying a beverage before our performances. The Silver Moon Lounge will be open prior to all performances from 6:30 to 7:15 P.M., offering beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks for purchase. Opening Nights Sponsors and Members may use their drink tickets for complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks. To comply with our mask requirement during the performance, drinks will not be allowed to leave the lounge. We begin our April performances with Máiréad Nesbitt Ensemble. Máiréad is known best as a former violinist with the popular all-female Irish singing group Celtic Woman. Her versatile playing and ability to capture the spirit and energy of Celtic and Irish classics have made her one of the most well-known Celtic violinists performing today. To round out the performance, she will be joined by soprano Ryann Murray and percussionist/keyboardist Neil Grover, a Florida State University College of Music alumnus who

performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops for over 40 years. PRISM, featuring the world-renowned Florida State University College of Music, returns to Opening Nights on April 11 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Then, I hope you’ll join us for an evening with Michael Rosato who kicks off the Chain of Parks Art Festival with a keynote address that will be available in person and virtually on April 15. Thank you for joining us this season. We couldn’t do what we do without your continued support.

You may have heard Máiréad on the original soundtracks for Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames, and Disney’s Tinker Bell and Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure. Photo by John Hassett.

Máiréad Nesbitt Continued from pg. 17

Máiréad grew up in a multi-generational musical family in County Tipperary. Her parents are renowned music educators and all five of her siblings are award-winning musicians! A former all-Ireland fiddle champion and past member of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, Máiréad completed her studies at Cork Institute of Technology, Cork School of Music, under Cornelia Zanidache and at the London Royal Academy, with postgraduate studies under Emanuel Hurwitz on violin and piano. As musical influences, Máiréad cites her family, along with a wide range of musicians that includes classical violinist Itzhak Perlman, jazz great Stéphane Grappelli, bluegrass icon Alison Krauss, Irish fiddlers Liz Carroll, Michael Coleman, and Andy McGann, and rock performers like David Bowie, Sting, and Bjork. Máiréad has emerged as one of Ireland’s most in-demand musicians. Her multitude of awards include Irish Music Magazine’s Best Traditional and Multi-Instrumentalist Artist awards.

Máiréad’s solo albums, Raining Up and Hibernia, have charted on four different Billboard and Heatseeker charts. The album Devil’s Bit Sessions features three generations of her family and was recorded in the 300-yearold Nesbitt family home in County Tipperary, Ireland. Máiréad began her professional career at sixteen with the prestigious Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) Concert Orchestra. Despite her young age, Máiréad’s playing was featured on the original soundtracks of the shows Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and Feet of Flames, resulting in touring the world as the lead fiddler with the latter two shows. She composed the original music score for the show Irish Dance Invasion, is featured on the Celtic Tenors’ Live in Concert DVD, and is the featured violin soloist on the soundtrack of two Disney® films, Tinker Bell and Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure. Máiréad’s distinctive blend of traditional Irish and classical styles is featured in her work with such international artists as Nigel Kennedy, Van Morrison, Sinéad O’Connor, Clannad, Emmylou Harris, Aslan, Chris De Burgh,

Jimmy Webb, Sharon Shannon, Paul Brady, Frances Black, Cooney and Begley, Jimmy McCarthy and Dónal Lunny’s Coolfin. Máiréad has performed at both the White House and the Pentagon for four U.S. presidents. Additionally, among the hundreds of prestigious venues where she has performed are Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Red Rocks Colorado and Hyde Park in London. A guest soloist at Carnegie Hall in 2017 and 2018 with renowned artists Sibylle Szaggars Redford and the Tim Janis Ensemble, she is featured with Tim Janis on Celtic Lands available on Netflix.

Máiréad made her Broadway debut in 2018 at the Broadway Theatre in the multigenre spectacular Rocktopia, which had a sixweek sold out run. In addition to having her own successful signature line of violins, Máiréad has designed a distinctive new jewelry collection, the Máiréad Nesbitt Jewelry Collection. It was recently debuted and is sold exclusively on Jewelry Television and at JTV.com. OPENINGNIGH T S .F SU.ED U | 2 1
