pening Nights at Florida State University is excited to bring the very best performing arts, music, dance, comedy, literature and visual arts to our campus and community. New this season is a fun and unique boots and jeans outdoor performance by Hot Club of Cowtown at the beautiful Phipps Farm on Meridian. Join us for an outstanding western swing music experience, complete with food trucks, bars and plenty of fun. In November, we kick off the holiday season with two exciting performances beginning with Broadway’s Next Hit Musical’s The Phony Awards. This fully improvised performance features memorable characters, hilarious dialogue, song and dance. Who will win the award? November continues with Opening Nights’ first Goodwood Series concert at the Goodwood Museum and Gardens featuring Grammy nominated Della Mae. Don’t miss these amazing ladies performing their heartwarming, bluegrass melodies. Finally, we end 2023 with a holiday concert for the whole family, featuring a family of
musicians. MacMaster & Leahy Celtic Family Christmas will delight all ages with a family Christmas concert. Known as Canada’s reigning couple of Celtic music, they are sure to delight. Join us at Opperman Music Hall on December 7. I cannot think of a better time and opportunity to become a member of Opening Nights and to show your support of our mission to present exceptional artists — a mission worthy of supporting and celebrating! These performances create a thriving cultural life in our community and create priceless educational experiences on campus and throughout the community. Ask any Opening Nights associate about these philanthropic opportunities. Thank you for sharing the first half of our 23–24 season with us. We look forward to many more outstanding performances coming your ways in Tallahassee’s Bicentennial Year, 2024.

ELANA JAMES – FIDDLE & VOCALS Elana James grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas and began playing Suzuki violin at age four. It took James almost twenty years to decide between the violin and the fiddle, but in her mid-twenties, after much soul searching, James found her calling in American roots music and has never looked back. In 2006, performing with the Hot Club of Cowtown, James had the honor of representing the U. S. State Department as a Musical Ambassador throughout Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, playing everything from Texas hoedowns to American Songbook standards. She has been a featured guest on A Prairie Home Companion, the Grand Ole Opry, the Women in Jazz series at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and at festivals and concerts throughout the world. In 2005 James became the first dedicated female instrumentalist in Bob Dylan’s touring band in more than thirty years, then toured with him in 2006 as the opening act for his United States summer tour. James is an alumni of the Meadowmount School of Music, the New York Youth Symphony, The Columbia University Chamber Music Program, the New York String Orchestra Seminar with Alexander Schneider and the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France.
York guitarist Richard Lieberson focusing on American guitar styles from traditional jazz forms to Western and pre-1970s country. It was during this time that Smith met violinist Elana James, through an ad in the music section of the Village Voice, and ultimately began the band Hot Club of Cowtown with James, which has been his passion and chief focus since the group released its first recordings in 1998. BEAU SAMPLE – BASS & VOCALS Beau Sample was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He recorded and toured the world with his rockabilly band, Cave Catt Sammy, for many years, then moved to Austin, Texas. Sample studied music at Texas State University, then left school to record and tour with Elana James. After touring for about four years with Elana and Hot Club of Cowtown, then playing as a member of Dave Biller's Trio and Paris 49, he moved to Chicago. He has lived and worked in Chicago for the past 17 years. For ten of those years, Beau lead the eight-piece hot jazz band, The Fat Babies. Most recently he has been playing, recording and touring with Alfonso Ponticelli, Jake La Botz, The Cactus Blossoms, Joel Paterson, JD McPherson and Hot Club of Cowtown.
WHIT SMITH – GUITAR & VOCALS Whit Smith was born in Greenwich, Connecticut and spent his earliest years in New Cannan, Connecticut and later Wellfleet, Massachussetts. Born to musical parents Whit was exposed right away to a life of practicing and performing. By his early twenties, Smith had moved to New York City, where he went on to spend the next fifteen years and his most formative years in music. Beginning in 1992 Whit studied for two years in New York City with veteran New
