TAPESTRY OF SONGWRITING The “Tapestry of Songwriting” workshop will result in increased awareness, recognition, and a basic understanding of how to construct a song based on the most common practices of songwriting. Participants will be able to recognize the essential elements of a song (verse, chorus/hook, bridge, intro, outro), and will have the basic tools required to construct a simple song with their peers that they can use as a blueprint for future independent songwriting efforts.
VOCABULARY • Music - the artful combination of sounds and melody • Allegro - a fast speed/tempo • Andante - a strolling, “walking” speed/tempo • Beat - a steady pulse of the music • Dynamics - the variation in loudness between notes or phrases • Form - the structure of a musical composition or performance • Harmony - simultaneously occurring frequencies, pitches (tones, notes), or chords. • Largo - a slow speed/tempo • Rhythm - the combination of long and short sounds and silence organized into patterns • Pitch - the frequency (speed) of sound waves, determining a sound’s high-sounding or low-sounding pitch • Presto - a very fast speed/tempo • Tempo - in music, the frequency of beats per unit of time • Texture - the density of sound in a piece of music, usually effected by the number of instruments or voices and the relationship between their parts • Timbre - (pronounced “TAM-bur”) the characteristic sound of a particular instrument or voice, sometimes referred to as the “quality” or “tone color” Created in partnership with
