OVER RECENT YEARS the OPEN venue on Bank Plain has developed a reputation as an exciting venue for gigs and we are looking forward to our busiest ever season, with live music for all tastes in the unique surroundings of our Nightclub and Banking Hall, described by bands as having a superb sound system and atmosphere. Some might know OPEN as a charity, through its drop-in centre for youth activities, with Norfolk’s tallest climbing wall, café, studios for dance, performing arts and sound recording, with a game zone, pool, air hockey, ping pong and table football; our media lab is always available for homework, CV writing, job searches or just surfing. During school holidays we offer other fun activities such as photography, cookery, musical theatre, explosive science, comic creation, drama workshops and rock school. We also operate the SOS Bus in Norwich’s clubland at weekends, providing a safe haven and paramedic help for anyone at risk. We have recently been awarded Big Lottery funding for Your Life, an on-going programme based around life skills, ''We offer fun improving relationships and learning activities such with the ultimate aim of employment for as photography, more of Norfolk’s young people. But OPEN is more than just a venue cookery, for live music and youth activities – it musical theatre, stages conferences, meetings and explosive events for diverse clients in a range of different sized rooms for two people to science, drama 1,400. The Banking Hall is a magnificent workshops and and versatile space, with impressive rock school'' bar and VIP areas, full catering options and massive projection screen. With its city centre location, space flexibility, high vision, sound and lighting specification and experienced in-house technicians OPEN can fulfil any brief. Recently we’ve staged, to great acclaim, the Radio 1 Academy, Channel 4’s Talent Forum and Jeremy Corbyn’s rally. With bookings as diverse as Christmas parties, awards dinners, sports screenings, a variety of festivals, trade shows and networking events, the venue literally is OPEN for business. With every penny of profit going to the benefit of young people in Norfolk, it is an irresistible proposition.

Live music IN MARCH 2012 OPEN started putting on live
music regularly after many people agreed that both the Banking Hall (1400 standing capacity) and the Club Room (300 capacity) at OPEN would be perfect to host gigs and concerts for the people of Norfolk. The aim was and still is to bring more artists to the City and together with already great established music venues, such as the UEA, The Waterfront and Norwich Arts Centre, help to make Norwich a ‘must destination’ for touring bands and musicians. To date we have hosted events such as London Grammar, Belle & Sebastian, Duke Dumont, Bellowhead, Public Service Broadcasting, Hazel O’Connor, the Radio One Academy, Bo Nanafana Social Club and the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club. Many of the artists and DJs have enjoyed performing at OPEN so much that they have insisted on returning. Our aim is to be as diverse as possible in the music here so we’ve hosted jazz, funk & soul, rock, house, reggae, pop, indie, hip hop and folk and we will continue working with both local and national promoters to try and provide something for everyone. We have become the host venue for regular events now such as The Norwich Jazz Festival, The Norwich Soul Train, The Norfolk & Norwich Festival, The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club and The Plugg.

his experience of OPEN as “awesome” and said spending time with the charity had helped him gain confidence. The 18 year old, from Thorpe, started as a climbing member and as his skills progressed he started to volunteer with the instructors, lending a hand during open sessions and at birthday parties. Two years ago he became a full volunteer and has since completed climbing supervisor training. ack said t s helped me with a lot of things. I used to never talk to anyone, was very introverted. ut now work with groups and it s improved in that aspect. t s also given me a lot of di erent experiences. t s helped me develop as a person.”
coming to dance classes at OPEN in 2013 she was very quiet and lacking in confidence. But in just two years the 17-year old from Old Catton has seen her confidence “flourish” and she has now found herself at the other end of the dance studio – leading classes. “It’s made me who I am,” she said. “It gave me the confidence to apply for my first year of college, they helped me getting my first job and are helping with my teaching skills. I don’t think I could have done it without the whole team.” Since attending OPEN, Michaela, who is studying dance at City College Norwich, has also gained various qualifications and awards as well as performing in regular showcases.

DROP IN Ally Flatman, Youth Worker for OPEN talks about Drop In “DROP IN IS A UNIQUE
service on offer to young people aged between 11 – 19. Being open 5 days a week and free gives young people more availability to access us when they need to. Some young people we may see daily, others just on Saturday and some less frequently. The important part of our Drop In service is that we provide a warm, fun and safe place for young people to attend and that there is always a youth worker on site to offer support. We have seen many young people come through our door and seen their transition from teenager to young adult and feel proud to have created a space for that to happen”.

How long have you lived in the Norfolk area? Without giving away my age, most of my life, my parents moved here when I was young and I’m so pleased they did. What’s the best thing about Norfolk? The beautiful coastline and beaches.
Call us today for a no obligation free quotation and advice On
What would you do if you were not doing this? I’d like to say I’d be a lady of leisure but I’d get very bored so would get stuck into some voluntary work for another charity. Outside charity work I would enjoy a marketing role in a fast moving environment.
“MY KEY responsibility is to identify and maximise the PR opportunities for both the OPEN Youth Trust and the SOS Bus. This is predominantly done through issuing press releases, keeping the Trust’s website and other external websites up to date as well as using a variety of social media platforms to keep people informed of the services and events going on within the venue.” Describe your job? It’s true, but no two days are the same and one of the great things about my role is the variety. One minute I’ll be attending networking events to spread the word of OPEN and the SOS Bus, the next I’ll be designing posters to promote school holiday activities or other marketing materials. In between all of that I’ll be scheduling messages on social media and also making time in my day to get to know young people who come into Drop In. What do you like most about your job? Seeing the positive impact that OPEN has on the lives of young people, the wide variety of work I’m involved in and
''It's rewarding being part of something that is making a real difference to young people's lives''
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Being part of something that is making a real difference to young people’s lives. I’ve seen people grow and become self-confident (it’s done the same for me too). It’s great seeing young people enjoy themselves and make new friendships, both of which are very important. How do you relax outside of work? Running with my buddies followed by a nice coffee and cheese scone somewhere. Who is the most famous person you have ever met? Stephen Fry when he filmed an episode of Kingdom at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Tell us something about you that we wouldn’t know? My granddad (Harold Whitlock) won an Olympic gold medal for the 50k walk in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Sum up yourself in three words Colourful, loyal, energetic. Sum up Norfolk in three words Diverse, relaxing, unique. And finally… what is the one piece of advice you would give to a complete stranger? Never look down on anybody unless you are helping them up.
