ADVERTORIAL - THE FEED
THE FEED is a catering company with a difference. As the trading arm of Norwich-based social enterprise ‘LEAP’, The Feed offers its customers catering with a conscience. Whether it’s an office lunch for ten, a wedding breakfast or a fine dining experience, The Feed will cater for any requirements with its ethos of serving fresh, homemade produce sourced locally wherever possible. They are extremely proud to be working in partnership with OPEN, where their kitchen is based. Together with OPEN, The Feed offers flexible catering options through various conference packages, all of which can be tailored to suit individual needs. The Feed incorporates the Flourish Employment Academy, a twelve-week training programme for vulnerable people wishing to make a positive change in their lives. The course teaches catering and hospitality skills, enabling trainees to gain qualifications, work experience and learning through day workshops. All trainees are supported by oneto-one mentoring and graduates routinely enter volunteering, work experience and paid employment. Events are followed by high praise from customers. Anna Douglas, Marketing & Development Manage at Norfolk Community Foundation said: “As well as enjoying your wonderful food, we were also rewarded by knowing that we were supporting your core work of helping vulnerable adults. We have no reservation in recommending your impeccable service and delightful food.”

Help OPEN spread the joy Making a positive difference to the lives of young people in Norfolk
JOHN GORDONSAKER Chief Executive
Visit us 20 Bank Plain, Norwich, Norfolk, NR2 4SF – Call us (01603) 763111 – Email us info@opennorwich.org.uk
Twitter @OPENNorwich – Facebook /opennorwich – Instagram OPENNorwich – Online opennorwich.org.uk Registered charity no. 1108712 Company registered no. 5320333
WHILST OUR CHARITABLE PURPOSE is a serious business, funded programmes like Your Life give young people the confidence and life skills to find their own path in life or go on to meaningful employment, which of course brings great joy. We like to practice what we preach so it is great to see that the young people who appear in Drop In or sign up to our programmes are coming through as volunteers, interns, apprentices and contracted employees. The cover picture is a wonderful example of how our volunteer programme is developing and we could not have run our recent Discover OPEN Day without them. They were brilliant ambassadors for what we are trying to achieve and I am extremely grateful for the way in which they threw themselves into any tasks given to them. Some of those volunteers are also extending themselves by working in the venue, with a couple of them shadowing our Box Office team, one taken on as our first apprentice and both our Bar Supervisor and Youth Marketing Assistant are Drop In alumni. But the highest accolade for our youth programmes is the fact that we have just appointed one of our young people to become a Trustee. At only nineteen, Michael Ni’Man gave a compelling pitch to the Board, having first stepped through the doors of OPEN as a Year 9 pupil at Norwich School. Soon afterwards he became involved in our Youth Forum, which aims to give young people a voice, ensuring that the charity meets the current and future needs of young people in Norfolk. He believes that through the Youth Forum, OPEN gave him the confidence and inspiration to follow his dream of becoming a doctor, picking up an entrepreneurial flair along the way with business interests in social enterprises, IT and innovation. The moral of the story is that anything is possible and, with your support, our plan to become self-sufficient, where every penny of profit from the venue goes directly to the benefit of young people, is not just a dream. There are so many ways in which you can help. You can spread the joy by simply donating or feel the joy by buying tickets to a range of summer events and gigs listed in this guide, including our popular Comedy Bank, England’s Euro screenings, Rock Choir, Jazz Weekender and the very popular Gin Festival. As an organisation, every time you book a conference or meeting in our amazingly versatile and stunning spaces you bring joy to young lives in Norfolk and there are plenty of sponsorship opportunities to reach over 30,000 music lovers and 3,000 young people each year. Either would be a joyful act of social responsibility. I know of no other Norwich venue offering such a John GordonSaker (right) compelling proposition. with Trustee Michael Ni’Man (left)

On 6th July we have our fourth edition of The Cut which is a new night for local up and coming acts brought to you by BBC Introducing in Norfolk and Outline Magazine. Metal band Our Hollow, Our Home are here on 5th August and September kicks off with the third Norwich Jazz Weekender on the 3rd & 4th. Former Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble brings his new band to Norwich on 15th September.

On Thursday 23rd June we're proud to bring you our second COMEDY BANK... AFTER THE overwhelming success of our first one back in April we would be silly not to make this a more regular night, so we’ve booked the incredibly funny Paul Thorn along with the sharp and surreal observational humoured Jeremy O’Donnell, the quirky laconic and sarcastic raconteur that is James Cook and all held together by Brummie MC Karen Bailey who was the first ever female winner of the prestigious Comedy Store King Gong award!

Can you help? Then we need you!
THE KITCHEN OUR PLANS for the future are twofold. Here at OPEN, we have a professional kitchen which we want to be run by young people for young people and to provide Catering and Hospitality Training for young people in Norfolk. This will lead to job opportunities and allow our young people to learn how to eat healthily on a budget.
The Kitchen at OPEN located within the Drop-In social hub
If you can help us make a difference in any way then please contact Grainne Buckley, Fundraising Manager on 01603 252112 or email grainne@open norwich.org.uk
Boxing Gym We also want to establish a boxing gym to encourage our young people to get fit and healthy in a supportive, safe and fun environment. We would welcome sponsorship from any business or individual who might like to get involved. Elements available for sponsorship or brand marketing include specific events, as well as parts of the building, equipment or one of our many programmes.

The following are just a couple of young people's stories of their journey with the OPEN Youth Trust.
SAM MARCHANT (AGE 17) REBECCA PERRY (AGE 17) Becca first came to OPEN in 2012 and started volunteering in 2015. She has subsequently been part of our level one customer service course. She also assisted when OPEN collaborated with AGE UK to help and advise the elderly with a variety of technological devices. Becca says: “OPEN has helped support me to grow as a person and without it I wouldn’t have over 30 hours of volunteering. The staff members are all kind and friendly which makes getting involved with the different activities and opportunities at OPEN a lot easier.”
Sam first came to OPEN in 2014 and became a volunteer in late 2015. He also helped in our ten year anniversary summer showcase and co-hosted the winter showcase. Through OPEN’s support, Sam has been able to meet a wider range of young people through the services that OPEN provides. Sam says: “OPEN has had such a positive impact on mine and many other young people’s lives in Norfolk. I would not be so open-minded, creative and optimistic if it wasn’t for OPEN. They also truly help you progress as a person and as a volunteer within the OPEN community.”

“MY ROLE is to fill the venue with conferences and events. This leads to a variety of bespoke bookings that fill the calendar. Describe your job Based in our spacious new communal office overlooking London Street, I am mostly liaising with clients, fact-finding, selling, quoting and helping individuals plan the event they need. My role includes attending networking meetings, visiting other venues as well as showing prospective clients around the venue and fitting the venue to the client’s requirements. The more profits we can generate to help provide positive activities for young people, the better. What do you like most about your job? The fact that OPEN is such a fabulous building with more different opportunities than anyone imagines from the outside. It is fun to show visitors around because there is always a surprise, like finding the tallest climbing wall in Norfolk, a sevenmetre-wide presentation screen in the Banking Hall, full theatre lighting, grade 11 listed conference rooms with plasma screens and leather chairs… there really is something for everyone!

What’s the most rewarding part of your job? This is twofold. I love seeing my clients’ events come together – so much of the planning takes part a year or more before the event, so watching a successful show, awards night or conference when you know what has gone into it is wonderful. I also love the financial side, seeing us reach our targets, planning the year ahead and filling the calendar.
discussion
ANN TATTAM
Conference & Event Manager
What would you do if you were not doing this? If money was no object I would be travelling the world. However, I love working for OPEN and at the moment I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. How long have you lived in the Norfolk area? My family and I moved here from Leicester and saw in the millennium here, so 16 years. It’s gone by very quickly. What’s the best thing about Norfolk? I love that Norfolk has so much coastline, just like the South West where I grew up. I think I have walked the whole coastline of Norfolk now, and driven it many times. My favourite drives are along the North Norfolk coast from Wells to Sheringham, as the summer sun is setting, or driving towards Winterton along the straight road from Acle past Horsey wind pump.
How do you relax outside of work? With my family, at home and on holidays. I also run a book group, our last book was Kate Atkinson’s A God in Ruins. We also read poetry, classics and anything one of us is interested in. Walking is great for unwinding; my daily walk into the city helps clear my head, and I am also in a walking group with friends – we have walked much of the coastline together. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met? I am lucky to have met quite a few including Princess Anne, however the most exciting was meeting and chatting with Bob Geldof when I was a teenager and the Boomtown Rats played in my home town of Exeter. Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you I was born and grew up on a remote dairy farm on the edge of Dartmoor. Heltor Rock was on one of our fields. Sum up yourself in three words Conscientious, loyal, passionate. Sum up Norfolk in three words Flat, English, interesting. And finally… what is the one piece of advice you would give to a complete stranger? Not something I would do except maybe when I am driving, then it will usually be ‘speed up!’
