ADVERTORIAL - MIXED VOICE
Theatre Company Mixed Voice returns to OPEN for three nights of Christmas magic! Monday 19th-Wednesday 21st December, 7.30pm, Tickets £18
WITH A PROFESSIONAL live band and some of the best singers and dancers in the region, Mixed Voice are working in association with OPEN this December to present three nights of Christmas magic. Norwich-based Theatre Company Mixed Voice were founded in 2007 with the overall aim of bridging the gap between local and West End theatre. They have spent almost a decade raising the bar in musical theatre in Norwich, most recently with a sell-out run of West Side Story at Norwich Playhouse. However, Mixed Voice aren’t just known for their musicals, they have been performing a Christmas Show in Norwich for six years and it has a real following! They pride themselves on their professional standards and last year’s Christmas Show at OPEN was evidence of this and also why OPEN wanted to work in association with the company. This is no ordinary Christmas concert… Mixed Voice create a truly enchanting atmosphere with some incredible, new and exciting arrangements of the Christmas songs you know and love. Add Christmas trees, fairy lights, mischievous elves and some very talented dancers and you are in Christmas heaven! The Mixed Voice Christmas Show aims to send you home feeling full of Christmas warmth and spirit, making this show a great start to the holidays for the whole family!

What’s On one year on... Making a positive difference to the lives of young people in Norfolk CAN YOU BELIEVE that our What’s On event guide is now entering its first anniversary? The production of our guide would not have been possible without the continued support from H2Creative Media and sponsorship from Production Bureau. For now though we are about to head into a really busy few months and I promise that there is not a humbug in sight! Though there does seem to be a bit of a vintage theme going on… Yes, over the coming months we continue to provide an exciting and varied programme of events. The highlights for me include the screening of the silent cult horror film, Nosferatu and the return of the Norwich Cathedral Choir singing carols in the Banking Hall just like the old Barclays Bank days. Then we have some classic music legends performing here with Jonah Lewie bidding to Stop the Cavalry, Seth Lakeman and Steeleye Span. Finally there is a fantastic opportunity for you to celebrate Christmas with the utterly brilliant Benoit Viellefon and his Orchestra. Before I sign off and wish our readers “We are about a very Happy Christmas (as I write this in to head into September!) it would be great to have any feedback and comments about our guide a really busy so that we can continue to improve and few months develop it over the coming year. and I promise I’d also love to hear from you if you’d like to support the work of our two charities in that there is any way.
not a humbug in sight!”

Introducing the Norwich SOS Bus Our top tips
OPEN ALSO RUNS
the Norwich SOS Bus, which provides a vital resource to the bustling nightlife on Fridays and Saturdays. With the festive season fast approaching, it’s that time of the year we all look forward to, a chance to eat, drink and be merry. However be sure not to put a stop to this fun by taking the proper precautions to ensure your own safety as well as those around you. The bus operates every Friday and Saturday night from 9.30pm-4.00am and can be called during these times on 07833 505505.
Don’t drink on an empty stomach – have something to eat before, even if it’s just a snack – Alternate alcoholic drinks with water and soft drinks – Avoid running the risk of having your drink spiked by never leaving it unattended – How are you going to get home? Plan your designated driver, or do you need to arrange a taxi? Don’t drink and drive – before you go out, plan ahead – Keep your taxi money in another part of your handbag or wallet so you don’t spend it – Save the SOS Bus number in your phone should you need us: 07833 505505

in October 2014 as part of our Fast Forward programme, she was rather shy socially but keen to get involved. Abbie is very calm and approachable with other young people and as a young volunteer has had to make challenging decisions in difficult circumstances, proving her maturity as a young person. She is a vibrant and active member of OPEN’s community as a Young Volunteer and can be regularly found in Drop-In and assisting on OPEN’s Music activities. Abbie said “since joining OPEN’s volunteer programme my confidence has grown which has helped me make many new friends both in and outside of OPEN.”
OPEN in June 2012 as part of the Ascenders’ climbing sessions. He was very shy and had some anxiety issues and would only speak to his friend Jack who also attended climbing at OPEN. James now is an active member of the Young Volunteer programme and can often be seen helping out during school holidays on the various Climbing activities. He has also completed his National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme level 1 + 2 and is now working towards his level 3. James said: “Being at OPEN is great. I always tell my friends about how much stuff they can get involved with. OPEN has given me so many life skills that I will be able to go so much further in life.”

OPEN HAS RECENTLY been granted funding from UK Youth to run a ‘Big Music Project’. For this project OPEN Youth Trust is recruiting 10 young people aged 14 years plus to become Big Music Champions. These young people will have the opportunity to take part in various music workshops and gain an accreditation in performing arts. Our project will consist of young performers going ‘on tour’ and performing ensemble songs in various venues across Norfolk in the lead up to Christmas. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday evenings between 6pm-7pm and there is no cost to attend. Not all Big Music Champions need to sing, young people will also be able to get involved in organising the logistics of OPEN going ‘on tour’ including booking venues, or health and safety so the possibilities are endless.

JACKIE LAMB
Customer Service Advisor
Describe your job I have been a Customer Service Advisor at OPEN for nearly 7 years. Being located in reception means I have the pleasure of being the first point of contact for our young people, corporate clients and the general public. I also act as receptionist for the various agencies within the building. Within my role I’m the first port of call for anyone coming through the doors and this can
What do you like most about your job? I love interacting with people and trying to help with any problems or issues that they may have. It also gives me the opportunity to promote the work of OPEN and show off the wonderful building that we occupy. I like to OPEN our doors to reception wide so that people can see what we do which encourages them to come in and ask for more information. I have always worked in customer facing jobs and really enjoy seeing the look on people’s faces when we give them a tour of our venue. They always say it is a fantastic space. What would you do if you were not doing this? I would love to travel more.
19
How long have you lived in the Norfolk area? I have lived in Norfolk all my life but welcome the opportunity to visit other parts of East Anglia and the Coast (and relish the excitement of the local derby when we play Ipswich). What’s the most rewarding part of your job? The most rewarding part of my job is when we are able to help people, both young and not so young, and they come back to our venue or stop me in the street to have a chat and tell me what is happening in their lives. How do you relax outside of work? Outside of work I try to relax by watching old films, doing crosswords, reading and also meeting friends. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met? I have been lucky enough to meet Frank Bruno, who was a great character and also Tony Benn, Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn have visited our venue. Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you I used to marshal cycle events covering Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. Also I used to help run a Junior Disco Club at a local Community Centre. Sum up yourself in three words Friendly, Helpful and “Young at Heart”. Sum up Norfolk in three words Amazing, interesting, unknown. And finally… what is the one piece of advice you would give to a complete stranger? Come and say hello… you will be amazed at the things we do for young people but you are never too old to come in. We have something for everyone.
