NORWICH LANES GALLERY BUILDS SUCCESS STORIES WITH LOCAL ARTISTS
GALLERY IN THE LANES, Norwich is pleased to sponsor this issue of the OPEN event guide. As neighbours, this commercial art gallery joins OPEN in celebrating and promoting arts in the city, helping bring both residents and visitors into the Norwich Lanes. Gallery in the Lanes is delighted to represent local artist Lara Cobden (see images), a figurative painter who lives and works in Norfolk. Her dreamy and beautiful works on canvas capture a magical realism that is both unreal and familiar. Lara has exhibited all over the world including America, Portugal and Sweden. She also exhibits regularly in London including the Mall Galleries, the Chelsea Fringe and the Affordable Art Fair. Having completed her degree in Painting at the University of Brighton, Lara spent eleven years in Ireland before relocating to the Eastern Region. Amanda Geitner, Director of the East Anglia Art Fund recently awarded Lara 1st prize at the Holt Festival Art Prize. Amanda says: “Lara Cobden’s work is meticulously observed and immaculately painted. Within her hyper-real landscapes and interiors there is an element of the
fantastic. Cobden is able to perfectly describe her world, with an enthralling otherworldly magic.” Examples of Lara’s work are featured on this page. Gallery in the Lanes, and its sister gallery Riverside Art and Glass in Wroxham, represents over 60 painters, ceramicists, printmakers, jewellers and glass artists. Prices suit every pocket, ranging from £10 to £10,000. We operate the Arts Council sponsored ‘Own Art’ scheme, which allows buyers to spread the cost of their purchase, interest free. Gallery opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm and Sunday 11-4pm. You can also shop online www.galleryinthelanes.co.uk/shop

GRAINNE BUCKLEY Head of Fundraising, OPEN Youth Trust
Focus on
fundraısing What is your role at OPEN Youth Trust? I am the Fundraiser at OPEN Youth Trust and my responsibility is to raise funds so that we can continue to offer young people in Norfolk opportunities that they cannot access elsewhere. We offer our young people state-of-the-art facilities, professional expertise, practical and emotional support. We also have a dedicated advice service and training and employment opportunities. All of our programmes are supported by qualified youth workers. I apply to Trusts and Foundations nationally and locally for funding for specific projects to support young people. Additionally, I develop relationships with local businesses and encourage them to support us in a variety of ways. I am also responsible for hosting events to raise money and do this by holding an annual fundraising dinner along with a series of Norfolk business leader events. These are a great way of raising awareness of our work in the local community.
Why should organisations and individuals donate to open? Due to drastic cuts in government funding. Children’s services have been severely reduced and young people are relying on the voluntary sector to fill this gap. We receive no state funding and rely entirely on support from the local community. We are in a unique position in that by encouraging the local community to use our facilities we can put every penny of profit back in to helping young people. Here at OPEN we are committed to helping young people to be the best they can and want each of them in Norfolk to have access to as many opportunities as possible. What are your challenges? In this age of austerity, raising funds is fiercely competitive with more and more charities competing for
OPENNORWICH.ORG.UK · 02/17 - 05/17
the same pot of funding. It is imperative to develop a compelling proposition to be able to compete. Getting the business community to support the next generation of young people in Norfolk is my main challenge for 2017. I want to promote the concept of doing “Good Business” by asking the Norfolk business community to invest in our young people as they are the future. Businesses can support us in a variety of ways such as encouraging staff to get involved in fundraising challenges and events. Adopting us as Charity of the Year or booking some of our amazing spaces, like our Banking Hall or one of our bespoke conference rooms will really help us in our work. Sponsoring one of our programmes or events or spaces is a great way of advertising your company whilst helping us at the same time. We are also keen to work with members of the business community willing to offer their expertise, time and knowledge to our young people If I had one wish for 2017 what would it be? I would like every single person in Norfolk to know who we are and what we do. I would also like to be able to reach out to more and more young people so they realise we are right behind them offering fun, support and guidance through the tricky adolescence years. I am really looking forward to 2017 and seeing the projects I have raised funds for coming to fruition. There are two projects in particular that I am super-excited about. OPEN Gym is opening in February and will be free of charge to any young person between the ages of 11-19. It will be the first of its kind in Norfolk and will allow our young people to get fit and healthy. Secondly, we are in the process of opening a training Café which will allow us to offer volunteering and employability skills to our young people as well as encouraging healthy eating on a budget! 2017 looks like it might be a very exciting year!! So please do get in touch if you would like to know more about OPEN – we would be delighted to meet you. To get involved contact Grainne on 01603 252112 or email grainne@opennorwich.org.uk
