GALLERY IN THE LANES,
represents a selection of highly collectible contemporary glass artists. Visitors from across the region can see breathtaking displays of vibrant hand blown and fused glass, with the opportunity to add pieces to their own collections. Gallery favourite Peter Layton was recently described by the Financial Times in their guide to ‘worldly pleasures’ How to Spend it as ‘putting glass on the art map’. Layton’s luscious palette makes his enticing pieces a joy to behold. Commissions by the Royal Academy of Art and the National Gallery are just two of the career highlights of this influential and well respected artist and artisan, who established the famous workshops and gallery of London Glassblowing. Glass is popular with a wide variety of art lovers who value its precious qualities and wish to bring light into their homes. Located in the heart of Norwich, Gallery in the Lanes has a prestigious space in Bedford Street in which you can see works on display and has a successful online shop. In recent months, we have seen an increase in customers from all over the world with

CHARLENE LEDGARD Head of Youth Services, OPEN Youth Trust
Focus on
youth work What is your role at OPEN Youth Trust? As Head of Youth Services at OPEN Youth Trust (OPEN), I oversee, develop and manage the service on offer to children and young people. Managing a team of 18 youth workers, with the support of Activities and Outreach Managers, I develop strategies and provide activities and resources to best meet the needs of young people in Norfolk.
Why is there a need for our work within Norfolk? Young people are continually facing challenges particularly in Norfolk where 17.9% of children and young people live in poverty. Through OPEN’s youth work we can give young people opportunities they may not find elsewhere such as a support network, advice and guidance, positive activities and employability skills.
Why did you want to become a youth worker? I have always had a passion for working with children and young people. My first paid youth work role was at the age of 19 when I worked on a summer camp in California, USA working with children aged 7-16 years from very deprived backgrounds. That was when I realised what a joy children and young people are to work with and the exciting challenges they represent. The seed was planted that I wanted to make a difference to the lives of young people, especially those that are most disadvantaged.
What are your challenges? My challenge is to make sure we meet the needs of young people, which are so vast and varied that one charity alone couldn’t possibly manage. However, by collaborating with other youth providers, parents and teachers we can establish what the needs of young people are and how we can best meet them. The next challenge is securing the funding and resources so that we can meet those needs.
What is the most rewarding part of your role? The most rewarding part of my role is seeing the change in young people. It’s all the little things that make a real difference to my job satisfaction, such as seeing a young person go from not saying a word to singing on stage in front of hundreds, or working with a young person for months on their CV and interview technique to have them bounce into the centre waving an employment offer. What is your future vision for youth work at OPEN? I hope to expand by taking what we offer at OPEN out to the communities of rural Norfolk. I’d also like to see OPEN becoming self-sustainable by 2020 so that as a charity we are not reliant on grant funding but able to deliver a service entirely through profits from our own commercial income. To find out more about what is on offer for young people visit opennorwich.org.uk/ youth-activities/whats-on/ call 01603 252110 or email activities@opennorwich.org.uk
How can young people get involved? There are lots of ways young people can get involved, they can come along to our Drop In Youth Hub – see our website www.opennorwich.org.uk for details along with information on all our other activities on offer including weekly dance, climbing or music workshops, employability support or our young volunteer programme.

NORWICH a thriving live music scene There are many areas of the UK that have a thriving independent live music scene but apart from the obvious, we here in Norwich are right at the top of the tree. Many of us here know this and have done for some time now but recently others have also started to wake up to this fact. BBC Radio 1 brought their Big Weekend to Earlham Park just two years ago and made OPEN their home for their Radio 1 Academy. The current issue of TMRW magazine recently featured a lengthy & in depth spotlight on the creative side of things happening here in our fine City. THE THINKING MEN
To help a music scene grow you need a number of ‘movers & shakers’ together with a great selection of quality venues to showcase our region’s talents. Here in Norwich we have both. Having the above is all well and good but if you haven’t got the people to support such a scene well it simply isn’t a scene and that’s where we win again. Weekend after weekend we witness, dare we say it, ‘a local band’ or artist selling out one of our venues, most recently Ducking Punches did just that at The Arts Centre following a successful UK tour. Other notable mentions go to the likes of Lightscape, Lee Gordon & The Vagaband plus many others to boot.
BBC Norfolk Introducing, Future Radio and Outline Magazine also play a vital part in getting behind both the shows & the musicians. Our scene also enjoys the support of the mighty Richard Shashamane who will keep you informed with a thoroughly extensive gig guide (check out Norwich: Music City, UK on Facebook) and you can see him almost every night of the week at one show or another and then in print with a speedy review and pretty cool photographs too. Apart from creating a stir here we also have a number of artists starting to gain recognition beyond our fair city walls and these include the aforementioned Ducking Punches, Let’s Eat Grandma (Transgressive Records), Sink Ya Teeth (1965 Records) and Mullally (Polydor Records).
Wooden Arms
In the coming months we at OPEN will be showcasing a wealth of home grown talent via our Open House event on the 17th June with Lightscape and Dog Fight our co-headliners. On the 12th August we have our AFO (Access the Future at Open) Takeover where we hand things over to our younger musicians with the help of both Future Radio and Access To Music with the event welcoming The Meeks & Vaudevue as our coheadliners. Other shows to look out for feature Burn the Headlines, The Big Alabama, No Story Goes, The Thinking Men and Wooden Arms.

Further to funding received from Norfolk Constabulary, Active Norfolk and The Shelroy Trust we have been able to refurbish and equip an underutilised area of the venue and turn it into a Gym. On offer for young people are a variety of sessions including boxing and mixed martial arts, which enable young people to learn skills such as selfcontrol and discipline, whilst developing their self-esteem.
OPEN Gym Membership is free for young people under the age of 18 and for adult members of the public the cost just £10 per month. There are also opportunities for young people to gain accreditations in sports, so those who pay get to ‘Get Fit and Give Back’ which helps ensure that cost does not become a barrier for young people and their future success.
