At The Party By Tomas Frere-Jenkins
I’m stuck here, with you lot. A bunch of tiny nobodies, it’s like somebody’s got hold of a shrink ray and shot literally everything. I can’t fit in this chair, my butt is coming out of the holes in the armrests, my hand is bigger than the plate and your face is just so small. No! I don’t give a damn about your new toy. Oh, it’s blue, you’ve already said that and I don’t care. Can you just shut up, shut up, SHUT UP YOU LITTLE…! I swore. The room has gone dead All eyes glued to me I turn, I want to flee I look around Please, please Nothing But then the parents come. The earth beneath my chair begins to shake. They take their aim, like a detective interrogation. The party lights are lasers. Here they are, towers, I feel as small as the tiny nobodies. Her fragrance clogs my nose. I’m so scared my heart drops to the floor. This is why I hate kid’s birthday parties.
Tomas’ Words
“I can’t imagine life without OPEN, it’s given me new friends and amazing opportunities like the launch of our poetry anthology. It’s been amazing and allowed me to open up and participate in poetry.”

e’d like to introduce to you a couple of young people whose lives have changed for the better because of the facilities & activities our charity OPEN Youth Trust has to offer.
Meet
Meet
Olivia participates in multiple dance groups at OPEN, and has performed in many shows since she first came to OPEN 5 years ago. She says “coming to OPEN has helped me loads, because I have met so many kind people”, and that it has allowed her to “learn a lot more and develop as a person”. Her favourite part about coming to OPEN is “seeing all my friends and all the activities, but of course the staff as well who are constantly there to talk to and are always there for support, no matter what you need help with. "Without OPEN, she wouldn’t be the person she is today" and even that she doesn’t think she “would be alive without the people at OPEN.” She encourages others to do the same as her, saying that “there is something for absolutely anyone... I would definitely recommend coming to OPEN because it will just change your life.”
Shahan came to OPEN after moving to England from Pakistan 7 years ago...He was 'always into outdoor sports', but was scared of heights. When he met Dan, OPEN's climbing instructor who Shahan says 'was an inspiration', he was motivated to push himself and became heavily involved with the different classes on offer. He has progressed over the years, and is now a volunteer instructor on many of the courses, teaching young people and adults of all abilities the sport he has grown to love. Without OPEN, Shahan says he 'wouldn't have integrated into a life within the UK as well as he has’, and that his time at OPEN is rewarding and has helped him become the confident person he is today.
