OPEN’s street and bowl food with dishes from around the world. These are ideal for large events such as Springfest, a forthcoming world beer festival, as they are quick to serve in boxes or bowls, easy to eat standing up and, because they are not labour intensive are a costeffective alternative.
Food For Thought What criteria should you use to choose a venue? The quality of its sound and lighting, the expertise of its technical staff, price, location, space flexibility or ambience? ➺OF COURSE all the above are
important and OPEN ticks every box, but how about choosing a venue based on the quality, choice and provenance of its food? It’s probably what most people remember. Head of Catering at OPEN, Andrew Baker, believes that food could and should be the reason for choosing a venue, but he would say that as he manages a kitchen that caters for any occasion and, because it’s in-house, can probably beat outside caterers on price. He said, “As a charity we frequently receive generous donations of ingredients, especially of dry goods and, as we work across a range of catering services, we can be very cost effective on anything from buffets to fine dining.”
OPEN is delighted to have been recognised as a Proudly Norfolk venue and Andrew Baker is proud to feature local produce in all his menus. “Working with local suppliers is important. It not only means that every dish has local provenance but it’s good for the Norfolk economy and suppliers help make a difference to the lives of young people in their own county.” The café on Castle Meadow is open to the public from 8am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. It is run by young people for young people and all the profits are directed to the Drop In social hub and Your Life, giving life skills and confidence to disadvantaged young people, helping them find their own way in life and
into employment, whilst providing a feeling of community and well-being.
“As a charity we frequently receive generous donations of ingredients, especially of dry goods and, as we work across a range of catering services, we can be very cost effective on anything from buffets to fine dining.” Andrew Baker Head of Catering at OPEN.
Practicing what it preaches, OPEN offers volunteer training, work experience and apprenticeships and, with a background in lecturing, Andrew Baker is also running courses for young people in kitchen and waiting skills. For clients booking small or large meetings in OPEN’s flexible spaces (for 2 to 500 people), there are now differently priced buffet options and, for VIP Receptions or networking events, canapés are available, again with a range of tastes and price options. For businesses local to OPEN, its take-away boxed buffet service of sandwiches, cakes and fruit is proving popular for working lunches or client hospitality on their own premises. Proving popular for quizzes, informal or public events are
OPEN is licensed for weddings and its menus offer every Bride and Groom a range of budgets from which to choose and, with ideas for the wedding cake, the venue really does offer a one stop catering solution – in all weathers. OPEN’s large industrial kitchen offers the space and facilities to cater for up to 250 guests at a
seated banquet, which could be for an awards ceremony, gala evening, society dinner or fundraising event. The organisation and attention to detail demanded by such events presents the charity’s bank of young kitchen and waiting staff the opportunity to learn a solid work ethic whilst earning some money. There are variously priced options from two to five courses, with fine dining available for that special occasion. For anyone wanting their own space to celebrate with guests or entertain clients, private dining is available from 4 to 40 people. The old Bank Manager’s dining rooms and offices have reverted to their original use and guests can dine in their original splendour with privacy provided by their personal chef and dedicated waiting staff, serving the finest food and wine. How many venues can say that every penny of profit goes to charity? Booking your wedding, conference, event, meeting or private dining experience at OPEN is a compelling proposition, in the knowledge that it will improve the lives of thousands of children in Norfolk. When excellence in catering lies at the heart of every occasion, it also adds plenty of food for thought. For more information visit www.opennorwich.org.uk
