CERTIFICATE IN TEACHER AIDING Qualification code: OP4100 Level: 4 Credits: 40 Teacher aides play an important role in supporting children’s learning in New Zealand schools. If you’re working as a teacher aide in a school, or would like to, then this part-time qualification will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to do the job effectively. You will study by distance and do the practical work in a school, with support from both the school and your Open Polytechnic tutor. The Certificate in Teacher Aiding qualification is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and is recognised in schools throughout the country.

QUALIFICATION Once you have successfully completed the qualification you will receive the Certificate in Teacher Aiding.

SKILLS YOU WILL GAIN When you have completed this qualification, you should: · have the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work as a teacher aide in New Zealand schools · have a variety of career opportunities such as paid employment as a teacher aide, work in special education, and teacher training · be prepared for further study.

QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE This qualification is made up of one core course 4971 Introduction to Teacher Aiding and a group of four elective courses chosen from 4972–4978. You must pass 4971 before enrolling in the group of four elective courses. In addition you must: · work as a teacher aide or volunteer teacher aide in a school for at least five hours each week while you are studying towards your certificate (this work should be classroom based) · pass the assessments for each course · complete each course (4971 and the group of four electives) within the enrolment period. Graduates of OP3500 Teacher Aide Certificate If you are interested in continuing your personal development, you can upgrade to OP4100 Certificate in Teacher Aiding. Your 20 credits from OP3500 will be transferred to OP4100. To complete OP4100 Certificate in Teacher Aiding, you need to enrol in 4972 Working Professionally and three other elective courses, excluding the equivalent of the elective you completed in OP3500 Teacher Aide Certificate. Graduates of OP4290 Out of School Care and Recreation Certificate You can credit some modules from OP4290 Out of School Care and Recreation Certificate to OP4100 Certificate in Teacher Aiding. Please contact the programme leader for more information.

ASSESSMENT This qualification is internally assessed. There are no exams. The assessments include written, oral and practical tasks. Your school support person will be required to verify some tasks. When your enrolment is confirmed, please visit My Open Polytechnic to view your assessment due dates. To access My Open Polytechnic, visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz and click on the login button at the top right of the page. Assessments can be submitted electronically on Online Campus.

General Information ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The Certificate in Teacher Aiding is open to both New Zealand and international students who are living in New Zealand. You can enrol in this qualification if you: · are at least 17 years of age · have access to a school to meet the on-job requirements of the qualification.

Note: On-job work in a secondary school may be approved. However, you must get approval for this from the programme leader before enrolling. See the last page of this brochure for contact details. If you are not currently employed as a teacher aide, you will need to volunteer at a local school. We will need the principal to confirm they are happy for you to volunteer at the school. When you apply to enrol online, we will let you know what additional information is required to progress your application. Note: The school will also require you to get police clearance before you start your voluntary work. International students International students who are residing in New Zealand and studying part-time must have: 路 a verified work permit/visa. Please note the expiry date must be after the end date of your course, and either 路 a Variation of Conditions allowing study at Open Polytechnic, or 路 a letter of authorisation from your employer (on letterhead) confirming that you need to undertake this training as part of your job. International fees must be paid in full at the time of enrolment. English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. STUDY TIME You will need to study for about 7 hours per week for each of the core courses and group of elective courses in the qualification. As well as this study time, you will need to work in a primary or intermediate school for at least 5 hours a week while you are studying towards your certificate.

Each course has recommended resources, and sometimes additional resources, which you can access free of charge through our library. Course material You will be provided with the material required to complete each course. The material will include: 路 learning guides 路 resources 路 assessments (some will need to be submitted online).

LOANS, ALLOWANCES AND OTHER FUNDING Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least four weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. Financial assistance We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set textbooks. ENROLMENT This qualification is open for admission throughout the year and each course officially starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You need to enrol online from our website. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/howtoenrol for more information. You will be advised if additional information is needed to progress your application, and you can usually complete this online during the application process. When your enrolment is confirmed, we will send you a letter with your course start and end dates and where you can find assessment submission deadlines. Enrol in 4971 Introduction to Teacher Aiding first. When you have passed 4971, you can enrol in the group of four electives.

Your tutor is there to help you through the course work, make sure you have understood the study material, and to check your progress. My Open Polytechnic My Open Polytechnic is our online portal for our students. With My Open Polytechnic you can: · update your details · view your study information · track the status of your materials · access your assessment submission deadlines, marks and final grades for each course · check your account balance · access Online Campus and the library. Once you’re enrolled, you can also keep track of your study information on the go with the My Open Polytechnic smartphone app called My OP. To download the app, search for “My OP” on the App Store (Apple iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android smartphone). These come pre-installed on your smartphone. Online Campus Online Campus is the area of our website where you can: · access information about your courses · communicate with other students in your courses and with your tutor · access the library. Library We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it. The library service provides: · online resources · guides on how to search for information · a distance lending service with free and fast delivery · information about study techniques.
