WELCOME TO OPEN POLYTECHNIC Whether you are looking to improve your career prospects, or learn something new, we can help you achieve your goal. We specialise in open learning – learning that gives you more freedom to decide what you study and where you study. Our courses are specifically designed for delivery by distance, which means you can fit your study around your life. And just because you are learning by distance, doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. DIPLOMA IN DESIGN AND DECORATING Qualification code: OP5030 Level: 5 This qualification has been developed by Open Polytechnic and Resene Paints Limited in conjunction with well-known interior designer Sylvia Sandford. Students who successfully complete this qualification will have both the knowledge and skills necessary to provide interior and exterior design advice in a residential environment in relation to colour schemes, fabric use, room plans, layout and design. The skills developed will enable graduates to seek entry-level employment as an interior designer, or in specialist trade showrooms and design stores, as a consultant or as an assistant to kitchen or bathroom designers, architects or other applicable industry specialists. To successfully complete this qualification, you need to have an eye for detail and colour, the ability to perform self-directed research and present work in an attractive and professional manner.
QUALIFICATION Once you have completed all 12 courses you can apply to receive the Level 5 Diploma in Design and Decorating.
SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN When you have completed this qualification, you will have: 路 a broad range of design skills 路 an awareness of influences on current design 路 the ability to apply design principles, including planning, colour and lighting to practical design tasks.

QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE This qualification is made up of 12 courses. Each course focuses on specific aspects of interior design and includes case studies and design activities to help you extend your knowledge in the subject area. The course materials also contain tips from Sylvia to help you along the way. There are self-check tests that allow you to check your own progress, and Sylvia’s team of interior designers will give you feedback on the assessments you submit. You must complete the courses in the order listed in the following table, as the qualification has been structured so that each course builds upon the skills learnt in the previous course. COURSE MATERIALS The course materials are self-contained, with everything you need to guide you through your studies. You will need stationery items such as paper, coloured pencils and other basic drawing and writing equipment. For some courses you will also need a scale ruler that has at least 1:100, 1:50 and 1:20 scales on it.
SET TEXTS There are no set text books required for this course; however, at times you will be asked to find additional resources from the web or library, or by visiting trade design suppliers.
ASSESSMENT This qualification is internally assessed, with two assessments for each course. Assessments include case studies and projects which you submit to your tutor for marking. Some assessments may need to be submitted online. When your enrolment is confirmed, please visit My Open Polytechnic to view your assessment due dates. General information ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS To enrol for this qualification you must have one of the following: · A minimum of 60 credits at Level 3 or higher on the NQF or NCEA. · A ‘B’ Bursary. · Passes in recognized Level 5 diploma level courses in New Zealand. · An overseas qualification assessed to be equivalent to the above by the programme leader or the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. · Passes in other certificate/diploma qualifications or courses as considered appropriate by the programme leader. If you have not achieved these qualifications or their equivalent, you may be admitted if you are able to demonstrate that you have a reasonable likelihood of success. English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. New Zealand students A New Zealand student is any New Zealand citizen, including citizens or permanent residents of the Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue studying there or in New Zealand; New Zealand residents or New Zealand permanent residents living in New Zealand; and Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents living in New Zealand. For more information, contact us – see the last page of this brochure for contact details. An ‘international student’ is anyone who doesn’t fit the description of a New Zealand student. International students International students who are residing in New Zealand and studying part-time must have a verified work permit/visa. Please note the expiry date must be after the end date of your course. You also need to have one of the following: · A Variation of Conditions allowing study at Open Polytechnic. · A letter of authorisation from your employer (on letterhead) confirming that you need to undertake this training as part of your job. International fees must be paid in full at the time of enrolment. Students living overseas Students living overseas are required to contact the programme leader to discuss the limited access to course resources and support before enrolling in this course. Annual administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable annual administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year.

Loans, allowances and other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least 4 weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. Financial assistance We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set textbooks. ENROLMENT This qualification is open for admission throughout the year and each course officially starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You need to enrol online from our website. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/howtoenrol for more information. You will be advised if additional 6
information is needed to progress your application, and you can usually complete this online during the application process. When your enrolment is confirmed, we will send you a letter with your course start and end dates and where you can find assessment submission deadlines. We recommend that you apply to enrol in a maximum of two courses at a time. LEARNING SUPPORT Your tutor You will have a tutor for each course you study. Your tutor is there to help you through the course work, to make sure you have understood the study material and to check your progress. My Open Polytechnic My Open Polytechnic is our online portal for our students. With My Open Polytechnic you can: · update your details · view your study information · track the status of your materials · access your assessment submission deadlines, marks and final grades for each course · check your account balance · access Online Campus and the library. Once you’re enrolled, you can also keep track of your study information on the go with the My Open Polytechnic smartphone app called My OP. To download the app, search for “My OP” on the App Store (Apple iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android smartphone). These come pre-installed on your smartphone. Online Campus Access to the internet is required to access the Online Campus.
