OPEN POLYTECHNIC OUT OF SCHOOL CARE AND RECREATION CERTIFICATE Qualification code: OP4290 Level: 4 Credits: 40 Out-of-school workers help to provide a safe and stimulating learning environment for children aged 5–13 in before school, after school and holiday programmes. If you are an out-of-school worker or would like to be, this qualification will give you the knowledge, skills and understanding you need to do the job effectively. You will study by distance and do the practical work in an out-of-school care programme, with support from your supervisor and Open Polytechnic tutor. This certificate is the only distance learning qualification in New Zealand that has been specifically developed for out-of-school workers. It is approved by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and is on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
QUALIFICATION Once you have successfully completed your study, you will receive the Open Polytechnic Out of School Care and Recreation Certificate.
FUTURE SKILLS As a graduate of this qualification, you should: · have the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work effectively at assistant level in out-of-school care programmes · have a variety of career opportunities working with children and young people in the out-of-school care, education and recreation sectors · be prepared for further study.

General information QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS You must work or volunteer in an out-of-school care programme over the time of your study in each course for at least: 路 three hours a week over at least two full school terms (or 20 weeks) in a before-school care and/or after-school care programme OR 路 30 hours per holiday period over at least two holiday periods in a holiday programme. You must also pass all the assessments in each course and complete each course within the enrolment period. COURSE AVAILABILITY Visit the qualification page on our website to see course availability. ASSESSMENT This qualification is internally assessed through assessments that include written and practical tasks. Some of these tasks will need to be verified by your supervisor or another suitable person at work. There are no exams. Assessments can be submitted electronically in Online Campus. When your enrolment is confirmed, please visit My Open Polytechnic to view your assessment due dates. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS This qualification is open to both New Zealand and international students who are living in New Zealand. Students living overseas may not enrol in this qualification. To enrol in this qualification you must: · be at least 16 years of age · have access to an out-of-school care programme to meet the on-job requirements. We will need your supervisor/employer to confirm they are happy for you to work in the out-of-school care programme · provide us with a satisfactory report from the Police Vetting Service (dated within the last 12 months) showing you have no convictions that will affect your suitability to work with children. Note: · Police vetting is usually done through your out-of-school care programme. · Please ensure you have a current police vet before applying to enrol in this certificate. · When you apply to enrol online, we will let you know what you need to do to progress your application.
STUDY TIME You will need to study for about seven hours a week for each course in this qualification to successfully complete them within the enrolment period. English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. International students International students who are residing in New Zealand and studying part-time must have a verified work permit/visa. Please note the expiry date must be after the end date of your course. You will also need one of the following: · A Variation of Conditions allowing study at Open Polytechnic. · A letter of authorisation from your employer (on letterhead) confirming that you need to undertake this training as part of your job. International fees must be paid in full at the time of enrolment. FEES Fees are displayed on each course and qualification page on our website. Course materials You will be provided with course materials for each course. Each course has further resources, which you can borrow from our library. You will also have access to an online course page via My Open Polytechnic. LOANS, ALLOWANCES AND OTHER FUNDING Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least four weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. Financial assistance We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set textbooks. ENROLMENT This qualification is open for admission throughout the year and each course officially starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You need to enrol online from our website. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/howtoenrol for more information. You will be advised if additional information is needed to progress your application, and you can usually complete this online during the application process. When your enrolment is confirmed, we will send you a letter with your course start and end dates and where you can find assessment submission deadlines. Enrol in 4290 Introduction to Out of School Care and Recreation first and once you have successfully passed this course, you can enrol in 4291 Extension to Out of School Care and Recreation.
Note: Full fees are due at the time of enrolment. Your enrolment will not be processed until all the required documents are received.

My Open Polytechnic My Open Polytechnic is our online portal for our students. With My Open Polytechnic you can: · update your details · view your study information · track the status of your materials · access your assessment submission deadlines, marks and final grades for each course · check your account balance · access Online Campus and the library. Once you’re enrolled, you can also keep track of your study information on the go with the My Open Polytechnic smartphone app called My OP. To download the app, search for “My OP” on the App Store (Apple iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android smartphone). These come pre-installed on your smartphone. Online Campus Online Campus is the area of our website where you can: · submit your assessments · access information about your courses · communicate with other students in your courses and with your lecturer or tutor · access the library. Library We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it. The library service provides: · online resources · guides on how to search for information · a distance lending service with free and fast delivery · information about study techniques. Further study You may be interested in our Level 4 Certificate in Teacher Aiding because once you have achieved this qualification, you will be able to credit some of your previous study towards it.
