Studying with us Open courses Open courses are available for admission at set dates throughout the year. Your enrolment will officially start on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. See our website for start and end dates, and assessment submission deadlines.

Trimester based or fixed-term courses Trimester based courses are taught within a set period – Trimester 1 starts in February, Trimester 2 in July and Trimester 3 in November – while other courses have different set enrolment dates. The key dates section on page 6 will tell you the exact dates for most trimester based courses and the website and subject brochures will tell you other important dates you need to know.

Admission requirements Some of our qualifications have admission requirements. This helps us ensure you enrol for qualifications at an appropriate level. The subject brochures and our website have full details of any admission requirements.

Online courses and support Our online courses are studied over the internet. This means course materials are made available electronically and you can use the internet to join in discussions with other students and tutors or lecturers. Most online courses are at the diploma or degree level. The icon in this prospectus identifies qualifications where there is a significant online component. All our courses have some online support – for example, our library services and some additional study resources are available on the Online Campus section of our website. For many courses, this section will also be used by lecturers and tutors to provide extra support and to have online discussions with students.

Student information You can find current enrolment and study information on our website including details of our systems and processes and the services we offer. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/studywithus to find out more.

Recognising your experience and skills

Managing time Each course has a credit value. As a general rule we advise you to allow about 10 hours of study per credit – so a 20-credit course will take about 200 hours to complete. You should then divide the number of hours by the number of weeks the course takes.

International students If you’re a foreign national living in New Zealand or overseas, or a New Zealand permanent resident living overseas, you may be able to study with us, subject to special conditions set by the New Zealand government. For further information please email or write to us (see contact details at the front of this prospectus).

For more information To find out more about any of the courses listed in this prospectus call us on freephone 0508 650 200 or visit our website.

How we help Lecturers and tutors You will have a lecturer or a tutor for every course you take. They will support you, monitor your progress, provide feedback and assess your work. You can get in touch with them by phone, email, fax or post.

Advice on planning your study You can get help with planning your study from our customer service representatives, programme leaders, programme and student advisors and learning centre advisors. Mäori learners are supported by our Kaiärahi Akoranga Mäori.

Keep track of your studies with My OP Once you’re enrolled, you can keep track of your study information on the go with the My Open Polytechnic smartphone app called My OP. To download the app, all you need to do is search for 'My OP' on the App Store (Apple iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android smartphone). These come pre-installed on your smartphone.

Plan your qualification online It’s easy to start planning your qualification with our interactive online planning tool called My Study Plan. You can use the tool to plan what courses to study and when. To create your study plan today, visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/mystudyplan

We know many of our students come to us with workplace, life skills and/or existing qualifications. You may be able to cross-credit courses you’ve done with another institution and you can apply for recognition of prior learning for some courses. For information call us on freephone 0508 650 200.

BUSINESS & COMMUNICATION

BUSINESS AND COMMUNICATION

SUCCESS JIMMY FUNAKI Wanting a better education to improve his family’s standard of living and open up his career prospects, Jimmy Funaki took up studies with Open Polytechnic. After hard work and determination, Jimmy succeeded in his efforts, graduating with a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Accounting. 'The graduation ceremony was fantastic. Being there to receive something that I had been working hard for was a great feeling; a moment I will treasure forever,' says Jimmy. Choosing the Bachelor of Business, Jimmy wanted something that gave him a variety of career options. Initially completing a New Zealand Diploma of Business through another educational provider, Jimmy chose Open Polytechnic to give him the extra flexibility he needed. 'I wanted to be able to work full-time as well as study and help my wife Tiffany raise our two beautiful girls, Kiana and Tyla. 'Distance learning gave me the freedom to do my work in my own time. It also taught me the concept of patience; to succeed, I needed to be patient.'

Studying mostly at night while the children were asleep, Jimmy initially found adjusting to distance learning challenging but says once he got into the swing of things, everything started to fall into place. 'Working adults and parents like me find it practically impossible to attend classrooms at a local university to get a degree. This is where distance learning is so effective, it suited my circumstances.' Jimmy found his tutors very helpful and says they were easily contactable by phone or email. He also valued connecting with other students through the Online Campus and ordering resources from the library. Dedicating his studies to his wife and daughters, Jimmy praises them for their continuous support. 'They were my inspirations and I would like to thank them for their great support throughout my years of studies. My employer, Spicers Paper, was also very supportive, both financially and emotionally.' Since graduating, Jimmy is now working on advancing his professional career. Understanding the journey involved in distance learning while juggling life commitments, Jimmy encourages people to just go for it.

'There is no limit and if you have something that you really want to achieve, now is the time to do it.'

SUCCESS HANA WHAANGA Wanting to get the best of both worlds, Hana Whaanga enrolled with Open Polytechnic so she could have the freedom to choose where and when she studied while she earned a living doing what she loves, working for the community as a librarian. Hana, who is of Ngati Kahungunu descent, first tried studying a different field with a local university. But attending classes full-time while working parttime took her too far away from her real love of being immersed in the library profession. Working in libraries since leaving high school, Hana felt it was her calling, so it made sense for her to switch her studies and enrol in a Diploma in Information and Library Studies through Open Polytechnic. 'Working part time and going to university didn’t work. Rather than fitting work around my studies, I wanted something I could do at my own pace. Because I could keep doing what I wanted during the day, it worked around my hours of work.'

Spending a year in Perth, Hana was able to take her studies with her. She has since completed both the Level 5 and Level 6 Diploma in Information and Library Studies and is as passionate as ever about learning and the library industry. 'I love having good conversations with people and getting to know the community. Working in a public library is about connecting people with information and what they need.' Now intent on studying towards a Bachelor of Applied Science, Hana thrives on sharing her enthusiasm for learning with the rest of the world and subsequently is very active in both library and webbased platforms. 'I like writing and from a very young age I have written stories so I thought, why not share these musings and put them on the internet? I then started developing my own website after taking a web design course over the summer through Open Polytechnic which taught me about HTML.' Hana describes herself as a lifelong learner and says studying runs in her family.

'The information you get from studying is gold, even if you don’t get a degree out of it, you gain untold learning and professional development.'

SUCCESS ANITA JACKSON Growing up with a passion for maths and a desire to understand how things work, Anita embarked on a Bachelor of Engineering Technology with Open Polytechnic, to align her interests with a career choice. Gaining full-time work at a Tauranga-based engineering company Redco NZ Limited as an Engineering Technician, after initially completing a Diploma in Architecture with another institution, Anita wanted to find a way to keep working while pursuing further studies in the engineering field. Distance learning with Open Polytechnic proved to be the best choice. 'I had just bought a house so realistically I had to work full-time in order to keep my repayments up. There was no local university I could study through so I looked around and found Open Polytechnic.' Offered via partnership between Open Polytechnic and the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), the Bachelor of Engineering Technology provides students with the knowledge and skills to be admitted as an Engineering Technologist or Professional Engineer with both the Institution of Professional Engineers in New Zealand and the Institute of Engineers in Australia.

'I found the courses really useful and all of the papers very applicable. I particularly valued the timeline and project-management components, but also very much enjoyed the technical and practical papers.' Studying by distance suited Anita well and meant she could work full-time while acquiring valuable and practical skills on the job. 'It was great as I was able to study in my own time. Sometimes it was difficult to maintain deadlines but it was good to be flexible and work full-time.' Anita says you have to be self-motivated to study by distance, and if she got stuck on something, she could always email her tutor or contact them by freephone. Because she was already working in an engineering environment, Anita could also run ideas past her work colleagues. Majoring in Civil Engineering, Anita’s new role as Graduate Engineer provides a lot of variety, with approximately 20 per cent of her time spent on site and the remaining time spent on design. 'While I would never take back my on-campus student experience, I can’t explain the benefits of working while studying, it’s huge and something I will never regret. It also meant I could apply what I was learning in my studies to my job instantly, giving me a real edge over other prospective employees.'

'I’ve found the value of working while studying has been of huge benefit to my career.' 36

SUCCESS JANELLE WILSON When she took up study with the Open Polytechnic, solo Mum Janelle Wilson wanted to show her five kids that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. 'I wanted to learn about people, better my career options, and show my children that you can change your path to create a better future.' Janelle’s hard work has paid off and since she began studying with Open Polytechnic, she has gained the Diploma in Psychology (Level 5), Diploma in Applied Mental Health (Level 6) and the Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Psychology. Janelle said the support and flexibility of distance learning through the Open Polytechnic made things easier. 'I could fit the study around my family - I would study while I was waiting to pick up the children from after school activities, or in evenings, mornings, or weekends.'

She says the support from tutors and lecturers, as well as the ability to talk online with other students also helped. 'I found the tutors fantastic. I would email them and always got clear responses. At times they even phoned to make sure I was on track.' And while sometimes family fun times had to take a back seat, Janelle says the rewards have been well worth the price. 'Being a positive role model for my children is important. It’s been great to be all doing our homework together. I hope it will give them a sense of the importance of study and how sometimes you have to postpone the good times so you can reap rewards in the future.' One of the rewards for Janelle was that her studies led to a job in the mental health field. She says the key to success in study is to take it one step at a time. 'My philosophy is you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Never give up and always believe in yourself.'

'..you can achieve anything you set your mind to..'
