Open Ways Spiral Moon by Staci B. Elliot www.sanctuaryWEST.org I sat down a few months ago, and looked at all the notes I’ve taken over the past five years about traditional pagan calendars and holidays and seasons and celebrations from around the world and across ime. I also looked at a collection of Native Peoples’ traditional names for the 13 moons of the year, as related by Jessica Prentice in the book, Full Moon Feast. And using those names and seasonal world focuses as the basis of my own calendar, I came up with a similar list of moons.
The Powers of wheat by Na Graham
Wheat, even today gives us life. The crops we harvest now will carry us through the year, unless of course you're gluten free. Wheat has been and may always be part of many fall rituals, to honor and thank our mother for a bountiful harvest. This fall, think about ways you and your family can use wheat in your hearth gatherings and rituals. Here are a few simple ideas. Using just the top portion of the wheat stalks, try braiding three lengths of wheat stalks together and forming them into three circles. Using ribbon, raffia, or even more wheat tie the circles together one on top of the other to hang on your hearth or front door. Also, with very little talent and some good string you can easily make a simple image of the goddess for your alter or hearth (Like the old corn husk dolls). My favorite and probably the most simple project is a wreath for your front door. In Ireland and Scotland our sisters would make a circular wheat wreath and hang it on the front door of their homes. This will assure you and your family luck and propriety throughout the coming winter, and not to mention look fantastic.
This is the Corn Moon, according to Prentiss. I call it the Spiral Moon. It is a time of reaping what we have sewn and tended and given our energy to for the past many months. At this time of year, for thousands of years, communities have harvested their corn and oats, barley and rice, dried it for later use, and practiced the age-old medicine of giving thanks to Mother Earth for the first harvest. It is a time of celebration and community. A time of abundance, success and vitality. A time to honor the body’s natural ability to heal, and the Earth’s natural ability to sus- So get out there, take a drive to the country and get yourselves some wheat stalks (with permission of course.) See what beautiful tain. To bring new life, and honor past lives. ways you can honor our Mother, and bless your home. Creativity feeds your soul! This is when the Sages once shared with younger farmers and gardeners the wisdom of sustainable agriculture - of living in harmony with the land, our Mother. And that pattern of community and sustainability and appreciation became a spiral dance across many communities and many centuries of living in harmony. Here we are at First Harvest again, walking on the bones of our ancestors, giving thanks for our grains, berries, greens, and other fruits of the Earth. Here we are, soaking up the life-giving rays of the Sun, relishing the cool breezes of night, dancing by the light of the full moon. Corn Moon. Spiral Moon. Be Well.

The Druid Tradition By Celestia Nova ed as judges and arbitrators and were exempt from having to participate in battle. They sometimes appeared between two armies to provide council or bring about peace. They were also said to perform magic and make prophecies. They had power over the elements and the ability to shape shift. They preformed divination and were said to use secret druidic languages and signs. A true Druid is dedicated to wisdom in all forms, mundane as well as magical. So, we are trained in many areas - Celtic wisdom, history, shamanism, divination, herbalism, astronomy/ astrology, Celtic myth and magic, Wiccan studies, Brehan laws, elemental magic and more. There are several levels to master that include rituals, initiations and special ceremonies to go through. We feel Magic (applied spirituality) brings divine power into ordinary life. As the ultimate symbol of mystical enlightenment, the grail remains as worthy as ever. From omens in nature to symbolism of the Ogham, Celtic spirituality is rich with methods to access divine insight. As one initiates into a sacred grove, you are cautioned that this is not an easy path. But it is a fulfilling way to live and is based on honor, spirituality, ethics and balance. Not every Druid is in a Grove. Many are solitary practitioners as well . We believe that trees, water, stones and animals are sacred. And so, you see, we are not so different after all ! Family Corner GET SOME APPLES
TELL A STORY
Apples are ripe and plentiful and wonderful symbols of Mabon, the second harvest of the season. There are many things you can do with apples as sabbat activities (besides eating them– which is also great). Slice an apple open horizontally across the center to reveal the sacred symbol of the pentacle. Slice an apple in half vertically. Take some tempra paint in a paper plate, and lay out some brown paper. Have the children press the apple, slicedside down, into the paint, and use it to stamp apple images on the brown paper. This can be used as wrapping paper, or decorated and hung as an autumn picture.
The Autumn Equinox is commonly referred to as Mabon, named after the Celtic hero who went on a perilous journey. Search your library, bookstore or the internet for old Northern European folk tales and you will probably come across the story of Mabon. Read the story to children on the holiday– or let them perform a seasonal enactment by turning it into a script and assigning parts. It also can make for a great puppet show.
Let children use the painting technique above to stamp apple prints on sliding-glass doors or large windows and decorate your house for the fall. Make apple sauce, fresh apple cider, or apple jelly.
This is the season of abundance, though many people in the world today are doing without. Teach children the importance of helping others by celebrating the holiday in a charitable way. Collect canned and dried food from family and neighbors and take them to the local shelter or charity. Sign up to volunteer a few hours at a homeless shelter or food pantry.

Sew a long-sleeved shirt at the waist to a pair of old Family Corner: Page 16 pants, then sew the cuffs on the sleeves and the pant legs closed. Let children stuff the scarecrow using fiber fill, old newspapers, or straw if you have it on hand. Then tie on some gloves and shoes. Use an old pillow case or potato sack stuffed up and set into the neck as the head. Children can paint faces on it, and top it off with an old hat. You can either prop your scarecrow up on a chair. You can also nail two boards together in a cross form and plant it firmly in the ground, then hang the scarecrow from it. Fall Equinox 2010
Open Ways Fall Equinox The Fall Equinox, or Mabon is celebrated as the final harvest of the season. This holiday was pivotal in ancient times, since everyone depended so heavily on a good final harvest, .to survive the hard winter months ahead. This is the time of year where we truly reap what we have sown and we prepare for the long winter that lays before us. The day and night are again equal in time and the God has traveled at last to His place of rest. Now, He has sacrificed Himself to provide us with a final harvest of food before the winter begins. People gather to mark the turning of the wheel and to give thanks for the ultimate sacrifice of The God, recognizing that He will be reborn at Yule. This holiday is known to many Pagans as “The Witches Thanksgiving” and a time for feasting and gathering with friends and family. This is also the time to welcome the season of the Crone. Kore’ goes to the underworld to learn the secrets of the

Crone (or in some stories she is kidnapped by Hades), and the earth is bare as Her Mother, Dementer, mourns her loss. The Fall Equinox does not always occur on the same day each year. This year the Fall Equinox is on September 22, 2010. There are a few explanations for why the equinox dates differ in the Gregorian calendar. The varying dates of the equinox are mainly due to the calendar system – most western countries use the Gregorian calendar, which has 365 days in a year, or 366 days in a leap year. According to the National Maritime Museum; the equinoxes generally occur about six hours later each year, with a jump of a day (backwards) on leap years. And extra day is added in a leap year to minimize a gradual drift of the equinox date through the season. Fall Equinox, Page 18
