Celts, Christians and Candy: The Symbolism of Halloween By Katrina Hollywand Remember when you were a kid and the schools had Halloween parties? We all dressed up as 3-foot replicas of ghouls and goblins and tottered off to class to be part of a spooky community of celebration and candy. Growing out of trick-or-treating was bitter sweet: We hung up our candy bags and pulled out candy bowls. In a poetic coming-ofage ritual, we traded our masks for decorated doors of our own.

it "All-Hallowmas", the collection of All Saint’s Eve, All Saint’s Day, and All Soul’s Day, complete with rituals for worshiping the dead and dressing in costume, including costumes of devils. Originally native to Irish and Scottish cultures, the JackO-Lantern is symbolic of a legend of a clever man who made a deal with the devil and then tricked his way out of his due. Having escaped an eternity in hell, but being too sinful to be accepted into heaven, "Jack" was condemned to wander the Earth for eternity in darkness, for which he had but a single candled-lantern to find his way. Originally symbolized by a candle in a turnip, the tradition has changed with the vast migration of Irish and Scots to America in the previous centuries. Finding pumpkins a more readily available fruit, and having several outer rinds after harvest feast preparation, celebrators began to use pumpkins instead of turnips for the decorative Jack-O-Lanterns used in modern America.

The practice of bobbing for apples is likely the descendant of one of the two Roman festivals brought into the British Isles in the first century A.D. that honors the goddess Pomona, who is goddess of Fruit and trees. Apples are traditionally her symbol.

The Swirling Mists and Shadows of Samhain By Celestia Nova & Raven

“Do I need to seriously study Druidry/Wicca this year?”

Among the many meanings of Samhain, you will find it to be the day to talk with and remember the dead. Samhain is neither part of the passing year nor is it part of the coming year. It is a magical in between time. On this day and night, the veil between the worlds is thin. The veil hangs between the seen world of matter and the unseen world of spirit. This does not mean evil hordes cross into the land of the living on this night. But it is time that we can communicate with our ancestors and loved ones who passed over in the past year.

“Am I ready to learn or master the Tarot, Runes or other forms of divination ?”

Druids believe that death is not death, but transformation. The leaves turn their colors and the wind swirls them at our feet, and the shadows begin to fall nearing Samhain, the Celtic New Year, the Druids New Year. Reminding us that it is now the time to remember and honor our ancestors, especially those who have crossed over in the past year. Setting up an ancestor altar is one way to do this. Setting an extra space at the table is a common tradition as well.

With all the activities, colors, scents and visual splendor that Samhain brings, let’s take advantage of the veil being so thin. Let us walk with the Druids and the Bards of past, present and future into the swirling mists and shadows, connecting and listening to our ancestors, that bring with them messages for us of the changes of the Celtic New Year ahead !

In the past, Druids and Bards walked the lands when the skies were dark and the heavens were bright. They knew the veil was thinnest between the living and the dead during this time of year. The Druids and the dead often traveled between. The ancestors could often advise and protect them. Rituals were performed in the villages by Druids. It was the third and last harvest time. Many preparations were made ready for the long, cold winter ahead. The swirling mist and shadow of Samhain was once again upon them. Today, modern Druids, Wiccans and pagans still enjoy and remember the history and festivities of Samhain. But it is very important to look ahead for the coming New Year. We need to consider the path we are on and make plans to continue or make a change. Divination messages are the strongest around Samhain because of the veil being so thin. Since it is time to get many answers from the other side, reflect on the last years events, both mundane and magical. It is the perfect time to dedicate/re-dedicate and/or commit to a new tradition or even a familiar one. Asking ourselves such things as Samhain 2010

“Is it time to finally learn all about herbs and find a good teacher ?” “Is this the year to join a formal group or be a solitary practitioner ?” “Is this the year, at last, to come out of the broom closet?”

Samhain: The Mystery Known By Lilith of the Dark I’ve always known something persevered alongside the mainstream advent of Halloween. As a child, while trick-ortreating, bobbing for apples, and wearing costumes, it pulled at my child spirit, like a fairy guide. Surrounding the celebration there always lurked an understated acknowledgment. Celebrating this particular eve was the right thing to do; something ethereal occurred, something unnamed. Without any reasoning or coherent background provided by my parents or society, my questioning, knowing spirit did not remain silent about the unnamed. Samhaim is impossible to explain from a Christian standpoint, although it is acknowledged as All Hallows Eve. So being different, I continued to know without understanding fully. At a very young age, I did strange things, like bury dead butterflies. I buried those beautiful bodies in my mom’s best washrags in the Nevada desert and hoped that a miracle would replace them before I got caught. It was an innocent child’s natural response to death, and a natural progression towards spell making.

soon be upon us. Plants that have supplied us with sustenance die giving their gifts, to be reborn again on the other side of the Wheel. At Samhaim, the joining with our dead loved ones and other ancestors, and the Earth, allows us to revel in this natural existence. Samhain embodies the strongest portal to knowledge. Although that portal to witch craft and Paganism was bolted closed with bloody chains, the keys held tightly by those in power with their deadly, power-hungry grip, the Samhain essence breaks through for those who know without understanding, for those who continue to seek despite the obstacles, and finally frees itself for those who come to understanding. This understanding may take a lifetime of searching for several reasons. The essence of lies, witch hunting, and murders manifested around that portal. But the sense and true power of the spirit of freedom and being one with nature remained strong on the other side. As a catalyst, it strained to break through the door, projecting a translucent exterior like a mirror.

In my mother place of the three stages of womanhood, I discovered that “Mystery” surrounding Samhaim had a proper name and was a part of the Wheel of Life. When I learned about witchcraft and Paganism, things shifted into their proper place. I came to know the full embodiment Samhaim.

When one senses the door and tries to look for it, all they see is reflection. Images at the portal standing on their solid, stone patriarchal base, are many-fold—religion and societal and economic rules, etc. Every aspect our modern culture has been manipulated and designed to get people away from the door of witchcraft and magic. The natural Samhaim represents both life and death at once and is the power of Samhaim and its inherent effect allows us to most powerful Sabbat. It exemplifies the natural balance open that barred door, to see beyond the mirror, to come between life and death. At this time the veil dissipates and to know, believe and practice what so many tried to destroy. we experience that mixed energy. I recognized this energy even as a child. Since then I’ve attended several family members as they passed over, and the same energy conjures itself, fully vibrant, a little chaotic, but intensely peaceful. A sacred moment. A sacred passage through the portal. And so it is the same when the flora and fauna move on, shifting their spirits to another realm. Samhaim allows us to celebrate a plentiful harvest with the knowledge that the resting time of the Sun and Earth will Samhain 2010

During this special time, everything becomes closer, like looking at your own mortality through Earth’s eyes, knowing that everything will be reborn again, with patience and knowing as spiritual guides. Samhaim has that effect if one is able to look beyond the images created by others and realize a personal power greater than one.

CATNIP: For Cats and Their Human Companions By Maria Noel Reprint from OW Samhain 1996 I remember as a child, watching my father sprinkle something that looked like tea leaves on a piece of newspaper and how the family cat went wild over it, rolled and rubbing and acting totally undignified.. Suddenly, she was Midgie of the Jungle! Stalking the wild shadow people who danced on the walls and pouncing the unsuspecting air currents slithering, sinuously across the carpet. In the end, she just flopped down on the floor in a self-satisfied, drunken stupor. What many people don’t always realize that is that catnip (Nepeta Calaria) as an herb can be as useful to us humans as it is enjoyable to our feline friends. But while this member of the mint family affects cats as a stimulant and an aphrodisiac, it’s main value to a human is quite the opposite, a sedative. Catnip has long been given to children as a nervine. It is also beneficial to the intestines and is useful in aiding digestion and for useful in aiding digestion and for flatulence. It promotes perspiration and lowers abdominal body heat and can be taken for colds and fevers. It is safe for pregnant women and can reduce morning sickness. Use in a poultice for bruises or as an enema for expelling worms. History/Folklore: In France, catnip is regularly grown in culinary herb gardens as seasoning. Before the use of tea from China, English peasantry brewed catnip tea claiming it was “as pleasant and more wholesome.” The root, when chewed, is said to ‘make the most gentle person fierce and quarrelsome’.’ It is said that a certain hangman took it to overcome the fear of doing his duty. Rats are said to dislike it and avoid it like the plague. That may make it useful as a protective screen.

Notes for Cats: It is possible for cats to become immune to the effects of catnip with too much usage. Therefore, it is not recommended that they indulge more than 1 or 2 times a week on a regular basis. Catnip Sleep Spell for Insomnia:

Catnip, from page 13 and tie with a cord to make a sachet. Hang the sachet in a sunny, south facing window. Make sure that it is placed in such a way that cats can’t get at it. Close your eyes and program the sachet by visualizing it receiving and absorbing the energy of the sun and moon, especially at noon and at night when the moon is high. Imagine the needed energy as powerful enough to cut through any clouds or other obstructions. Leave it there until sunrise on the following day. At sunrise, take the sachet down and hold it, visualizing the recipient going to bed and falling soundly asleep, waking refreshed in the morning. Then say these three words three times, “By the powers of the moon and sun, may ( )’s insomnia be done.’ Finish by saying, “So mote it be.” Give the talisman to the recipient and instruct him or her to put it under their pillow for a good night’s sleep. Be sure and mention that when it is no longer needed, either burn it or bury it at the base of a tree to cancel its effect.

then place the bowl on the floor for the cat. While she is drinking, make a cat toy using fabric, catnip, and twine to make a satchel, tying firmly and leaving a long tail with the twine so you can drag it across the floor. If using fresh catnip, it helps to bruise the leaves and rub a little of it into the weave of the fabric. When the cat is finished drinking, its play time. Open the circle when finished. Note; If the cat really does not want to do this, don’t force it on her. Just try again some other time. Perhaps with successful repetition, she may grow to enjoy and look forward to it. Psychic Bonding Ritual for You and Your Cat: Perform this ritual during the waxing of the full moon and in a closed room if you don’t think the cat will stay. You will need a bowl of milk, a piece of twine (about 3 feet), a 3” square of cotton fabric, and some catnip (either fresh or dried). Purify and define the ritual space as with any other ritual. It doesn’t matter which tradition you use although you may want to make it short stand sweet as the cat may be anxious to get to the good part. Make yourself comfortable for meditation. Make sure you are placed in such a way that you and your cat interact. Close your eyes, relax and take three deep breaths. When you feel relaxed and calm, call the cats name three times. Preferably the cat will come to you or will already be with you, but if not, don’t force her, just continue. Pet the cat (or visualize doing so), gently stroking, scratching and caressing her. Envision a glove of soft, white, warm light embracing you both. Send feelings of love to her. When you feel like you’ve both had enough it’s time for cakes and wine (or milk and ‘nip). Hold the bowl of milk in your hands and charge it with some of the cozy, warm, white, light energy. Drink part of it,

Open Ways How to See the Aura Around Trees By Petherwin reprinted from OW Samhain 1995 First, what is the “Aura”? The Aura is what the energy is called that comes from all living things: people, trees, animals, birds, fish, everything has an Aura! Now, you might wonder, what good is it, to learn how to see them? Once you can see an Aura around a tree (which is easier than you think) then you will be training your eyes to see auras around other beings. Some doctors in the world still use this sight to help them diagnose what is ailing their patients! When you have exercised your eyes for a few years, you too, will be able to understand when a person has a certain colored aura, what type of person they are. Eventually, you will be able to see Auras around everything that is alive. It is a lifelong ability, like riding a bicycle - once you know how, it’s easy to pick up again, when needed. It’s fun, too! When the light in the sky is filled with sunshine, go out into your yard, or find a park with tall trees. Make sure the sun isn’t in your eyes, so stand with the sun at your back. Look up at the trees with the light blue sky behind them, relax and just enjoy the view at first. Keep looking at the trees, say, for 3 - 5 minute, now look “beyond” the trees, like “un-focusing” a little bit - you still are seeing the trees, but you have changed the depth of your vision to include the space behind them also. You may start to see little quick movements of energy around the trees, the closer your vision goes toward the trees, the faster this energy is moving. You are seeing an Aura! After practicing, you will be able to detect various colors around the trees, usually though, more complex the being, the more colors you will find. Dogs, cats, and raccoons, for instance, have a wider band of color than a squirrel or mouse. The energy colors around people are usually vibrant for those people who are healthy, and might appear to be in wider areas around out-going people. “Muddy” people should be avoided - these are people who may be prone to criminal or unbalanced behavior. If one of the trees that you are seeing has a hole in it’s aura, perhaps the tree is sick in that area, or has been injured somehow. This exercise of “un-focusing” and seeing the energy around living beings is very good as a start for general psychic development. I personally believe that our distant ancestors may have learned this skill, to help them in the hunting they had to do to survive. To them, perhaps, there was nothing unusual or out of the ordinary in seeing Auras. We, as humans, “forgot” how to use this skill, and are gradually relearning it. 16
