Open Ways Basic Spirituality The Elements : Air By: Amberwolf This will be a series expanding on the Elements and their meanings.

The Elements The Four Elements protect the Sacred Space and anything within it. You will be working with things you may not be able to see, but you can feel them. The Quarters are called to balance and protect the Circle. They form a barrier between you, and the forces you will be working with. An archetype of each of the Elements, known as an Elemental, is called to the four cardinal points around the Circle. Different Traditions use different elements for each direction, and some may start calling at a different direction. Depending what sort of ritual is being worked. But, most use Earth for North, Air for East, Fire for South and Water for West. These are the traditional elements for each of the Quarters.

Correspondences: Starting with the East, we find the Element of Air. Definition of AIR 1 a archaic : Breath b : the mixture of invisible odorless tasteless gases (as nitrogen and oxygen) that surrounds the earth c : a light breeze 2 a : empty space Zodiac signs: Libra, Aquarius and Gemini Air is the element of the East, connected to the soul and the breath of life. If you’re doing a working related to communication, wisdom or the powers of the mind Air is the element to focus on. Air carries away your troubles, blows away strife, and carries positive thoughts to those who are far away. The Air element enhances vision, understanding and mental clarity; it also opens a path to the spirit realm. Air Symbol: Triangle points up with a horizontal line through center of triangle (continued on page 6) Samhain 2012

5

Open Ways Air is a masculine element in many cultures. The Air Element governs the Third Eye Chakra and the Crown Chakra. Colors: Air is associated with yellow, white and gray Tarot: Suit of Swords The Air element enhances vision, understanding and mental clarity it also opens a path to the spirit realm. Stones: Blue Calcite, Blue Lace Agate, Aventurine (white), Citrine, Hawk's Eye (Blue Tiger's Eye), Scolecite, Sodalite and Blue Topaz. Plants: Acacia (resin), Anise, Aspen, Broom, Catechu, Citron, Curry, Dandelion, Dill, Eyebright, Lavender, Ma huang, Meadowsweet, Peppermint (seed), Perilla leaf, Sida, Slippery elm, Sweetgrass, Witch's Broom, Yarrow (seeds, herb), Leaves, Fragrant flowers, Pungent herbs, Finely veined leaves, Wind-swept plants and Willow. The healing aspect of the Wind is also often symbolized by the aroma of healing plants and sometimes ,rarely, the plants themselves. Time: Infancy, Childhood, New Moon (1st quarter), Spring, Beltane and Sunrise. Animals/ Angels and Beings: Eagle, Hawk, Snake, Birds, Winged Insects, Cherub of air, Arch Angel Raphael, Sylphs, Griffins and Sprites. Magick: Wand, Censer, Arrow, Sword, Feather, Smoke, Incense, Fragrant Flowers, Spindle, Suspending tools from high places, Fanning, Visualization, Positive thinking, Divination, Concentration and Wind Magick. Willow boughs are also used as symbols of the Air; their supple nature and slender, wind-blown leaves seem fitting to represent the gentle supple motion of the Wind. It is interesting to note that Willow is believed to have healing properties as well, thus the willow also stands for the healing aspect of Wind.

Flutes, with their high pitching notes that often sound like the whining of the Wind in the branches of trees, is often used to depict the Wind. Flutes, panpipes, and other Wind music are often used as symbols for the wind . Yet music in general is a representation of Wind, as the sound is carried by the Wind bringing life to the music as it blows. Wind, when one takes the time to listen to it, is musical.

Encountering the Intangible By Ansur

There is a long foot-trail through Bandon State Park to the beach. At one point, there is small stretch that goes through a rather stunted forest. This forest-portion of the path is totally unlike any of the surrounding areas. As you enter this region, with each forward step, the light seems to dim—even though most of the trees do not exceed six feet in height. The deeper you penetrate into the stunted forest, the colder it gets. If you are sensitive enough, you may get a feeling of dread, of being watched, or of being unwelcome there. As for me, I got the feeling that there were presences there that do not like humans—not a real, deadly hate—just a profound dislike. I named the place, “The Forest of the Dark Elves.” That name was adopted by others in my party. The concept of such a place comes from ancient Roman sources that named it the “spirit of place” and called it the “Genius loci”—to which it is sometimes still referred. Such spirits have historically been envisaged as a guardian animal, a small supernatural being (puck, fairy, elf, etc., or a ghost). Sometimes these were “recognized” as Dryads—tree spirits. The Genius loci were identified as many of the inspirations behind the work of composers, writers and artists—and still are today! There are currently even Landscape Firms that will shape your yard to reflect “the spirit of the land.” The Roman’s often interpreted these “Genius loci” as benevolent and friendly presences. But most of my friends, acquaintances and I have usually experienced them as darker forces. This summer changed all that: In 2010, PACT Coven went on another of our interesting Road Trips, this time to a Spiritual Retreat/Ranch near Mt. Adams in Washington. There on the property of the Ranch, we met with a few owner/commune-people that actually were spiritual--but they were terribly disorganized. However, the bulk of the permanent community living there seemed to be posers; phony, mean, and rude. There were several places of interest on the Ranch, but I found most of them to be less than advertised. However, out in an open field in full view of Mt. Adams was a place designated as the ranch’s “Main Sacred Space.” That place was a circle in a field surrounded by poles with flags and ribbons. Our coven and its non-members (husbands, wives, & children) had to get permission to go out to this center and perform a power raising ceremony—which we did. The night was still and without a hint of a breeze as we walked across the field into the Sacred Space. We made a circle, held hands, and began the rite… (continued on page 8) Samhain 2012

7

Open Ways Despite the aura of negativity on this property because of some of the commune members, a sudden warm wind came up—making the surrounding flags flap and the ribbons sing. And with that gust of wind came a personality! This was not like the forceful anointing in flames described by some holy people. This was not the all powerful face of a disapproving and vengeful god. Instead, it was a strong but not overpowering presence that was friendly, comforting, and earthly. It brought with it a sense of pure joy, love, and humor. The feeling was so overpoweringly pleasant that I began to spontaneously laugh with appreciation. My laughter was echoed by many others holding hands in our circle. Then that one and only evening’s wind went away and the feeling of the presence dissipated as the flags quieted down. But the feeling of elation of encountering such a gracious presence lingered. I had never encountered such delightful and wonderful manifestation of a nature spirit before.

Open Ways

Notes From The Dragon’s Chest by Carl Neal

Paganomics I’m a relatively new transplant to the Pacific NW and finally had the joy of meeting some of Oregon and Washington’s Pagan communities this year. So while I’m still something of a stranger here, I wanted to reach out to the diverse communities of the region and let you get to know me while I am getting to know as many of you as I can. I hope that this column will help me do that and at the same time offer some amusement to readers while passing along some thoughts. Before I delve into the topic of this column, I wanted to share just a bit of my background with you. As an “Air Force Brat”, I grew up all over the USA. In my late teen years, my family moved back to my parents’home town of Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was mentored into the Pagan community in Oklahoma by an amazing woman named Annette Hinshaw. Although she is now on the other side of the veil, I still hear her words nearly every day. After venturing into the Pagan community and trying my hand at coven life, during college I moved away from the community and became a very private Solitary. Throughout the 1990’s I occasionally went to a festival or gathering but remained (voluntarily) away from the community. When my first book was published in the Fall of 2003, I found myself thrust back into the regional Pagan community as workshop and lecture requests came in from Oklahoma and the surrounding states. I grappled with the notion of returning to the community for a while but found myself hearing Annette’s words in my ears again and again. Community was critical to her and, as time passed, it became critical to me as well. I began taking leadership roles in the Oklahoma community. It was never by choice, but when there was a void Annette would whisper to me and before I knew it I was scheduling meetings or helping to plan festivals. I was elected to the presidency of the Oklahoma Pagan/Heathen Association (OPHA) and became the volunteer coordinator for Oklahoma’s Pagan Pride Day(s). (continued on page 10) Samhain 2012

9

Open Ways When OPHA turned out to be a failed effort because of integrity problems, I became one of the founding members of the Oklahoma Pagan Unification Society (OPUS). Although somewhat jaded from the negative political experiences of OPHA, I continued to plan community events and work with various groups around the state (including Children’s Circle – a project that was very important to our community) while at the same time reducing my formal roles in the community. When the love of my life confided in me that her greatest goal was to relocate to Oregon, I jumped at the chance to be with the woman I loved and help to make a new family in the PNW. I asked her to give me a year to get all of us to Oregon. 11 months later we all moved in together in Corvallis, Oregon. That was in 2009. It took about 2 years living here before I began to venture out and offer workshops. Six months after that, my newest book came out and really put me back in the “swing of things” as I searched out new people to listen to me prattle on about incense and incense making. I’ve now gotten to attend a number of West Coast gatherings and festivals and have plans to attend many more in the next year. I love the wonderful people I’ve met and look forward to meeting many more. Community means a great deal to me and you will hear me speak of it often. I thought it would be a very appropriate topic for the first of (many I hope) columns here in “Open Ways”. Please note that I use the term “Pagan” in its broad sense as originally intended by Oberon Zell Ravenheart. When I say “Pagan”, I also mean “Heathen”, “Druid”, “Wiccan”, “Witch”, and other nature-centered religions. I know that the use of this term has become controversial in recent years, so I just wanted to make my meaning plain since I use the term frequently. Are you familiar with the term “paganomics”? This concept of “Pagan economics” is simply borrowing from societies and religions that have practiced this same idea for thousands of years. Sometimes paganomics is thought of as buying your “Pagany” items (ritual wear, incense, herbs, etc.) from other members of the Pagan community. While it definitely does mean this, it means much more. How often have you seen a business card, company logo, or sign with the Christian fish? While less common in this part of the country, I still see one or more of those every day. In some parts of the country you see this 100 times more frequently. Why? What is the point of it? Lots of Christians put the fish on their car or other location as a public expression of their faith. I think that’s not only acceptable, but a truly American thing to tolerate. We have freedom of religion and expression, so I don’t see that in a negative way at all. But it is important to remember that when you see the fish on a commercial logo or sign, it has another meaning. It also means “hey, you and I are both Christians, so buy from/hire me rather than someone who may not believe.” Many religions have done this for countless generations and the result has been the pooling of more money within those communities. (continued on page 11) 10

Samhain 2012

Open Ways While it is (hopefully) likely that we would buy our herbs and candles from other Pagans, have you ever called a Pagan plumber? How about a carpenter or attorney? As with other communities, the Pagan community is replete with professionals in many different industries. Hiring a fellow Pagan for a task helps to keep our money within our community. I’m not suggesting that you drive 6 hours so you can be seen by a Pagan radiologist, but the next time you need the oil in your car changed, do you know a Pagan mechanic who could do that? When you need brush cleared on your land, is there a Pagan-owned company you could hire? When we keep our money circulating within our community it makes us all stronger. Money is essentially “economic fuel”. The more fuel we put into our community, the further it will be able to go. When we practice good paganomics we help the other members of our community which enables those Pagans to push even more money into the cycle. That creates greater opportunity for members of the community to attend festivals, donate to food banks, and put on great events like Pagan Pride Day. It may also help one or more of your fellow Pagans to break out their employment to others and start businesses of their own. The more we keep our money within the circle of paganomics, the faster the community can grow economically. The American economy has been brutal for years. While we are now starting to see some signs of recovery, this is perhaps the most critical time for us to keep money circulating within our Pagan communities. Let’s help our fellow Pagans build their businesses by supporting them with our money. When I have to hire someone to do anything, it hurts my wallet. It hurts a little less when I know that I am putting that money into the hands of a fellow Pagan. Yes, it’s easy to hop online and order herbs, books, and other items we Pagans often purchase. Online shopping often saves a dollar or two, but at what cost? To whom are you giving that money? Are these other Pagans or simply part of the growing list of businesses that appear “pagany” but are not owned by Pagans (Azure Green springs to mind)? So let me urge you to purchase locally from your fellow Pagans. When you want a new book, please go ahead and pay cover price at your local Pagan shop or at a festival rather than jumping to Amazon for your purchase. I can tell you from experience that this is better for authors and publishers as well. The amount of money that authors bring in is generally a percentage of the sale price of the book from the publisher. Since author’s get a percentage, cheap books sold on Amazon pay far less than books sold in your local shop. Publishers give big discounts to chains like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, which means the publisher and the author both make less money. That is also money that has been siphoned out of the Pagan economy. Can’t find what you want in your local shop? Before you hop online for that purchase, why not ask your local shop owner to order the item for you? They will appreciate the business and you will know you are keeping our money within our own circle. Don’t let that mentality fail you when looking for a plumber, mechanic, or paralegal. (continued on page 12)

Open Ways If you have services that can be offered to your fellow Pagans, please get the word out. List your services in publications such as “Open Ways” and put your services up on sites like “Witchvox” as well. Don’t worry if you do yard care (or other work) that seems unrelated to being a Pagan. Whatever goods or services you have available should be made known to the community so that we can all participate in “Paganomics”. Feel free to send information about your Pagan-owned or operated business as well and I will spread the word for you whenever I can. You can email your information to me at: carl@incensebooks.com I hope that each of you have a wonderful and magickal Samhain. Personally, I can hardly wait for Samhain, my favorite of all Pagan celebrations. -Carl

Open Ways Being Your Authentic Self - Samhain Edition By Mama Gaia Anger, Internalization and Negative Self-Talk Imagine this scenario: You're sitting in a coffee house reading your favorite book. A person walks by and trips on your bag, then turns around and yells at you "Hey! Idiot! Get your damn bag out of the way!" What do you do? Are you really an idiot? Or you get a new tech toy and are trying to learn your way around it. You go to a friend and ask for help saying "I"m so dumb, I can't figure this out." Are you truly dumb? Of course, you aren't. And you aren't an idiot either. So why did you call yourself dumb? Let's go over a particular situation. A mother and daughter live with a mentally and emotionally abusive man. He regularly treats both of them as if they were imbeciles, spewing an onslaught of derogatory and insulting epithets every day. The mother and daughter react is very different ways. The daughter knows she is highly intelligent and gets very angry when he treats her this way. She lashes out, is very argumentative, and fights constantly, not allowing his vitriol to sink in. With the mother, it is a completely different story. She accepts his abuse, rarely fighting back, rarely complaining. If the daughter tries to recruit the mother's help, she rises to the defense of the man, saying it's no big deal, let it go, do so for the harmony of the family. Which way of dealing with the situation is correct? What do you imagine you would do in their shoes? You can imagine the two reactions as two extremes of the same pendulum swing. Let's examine each end more closely. If you truly want to be connected to your body, the first thing you need to do is pay attention to what it does in certain situations. Let's start with the daughter. When she is abused, her stomach starts to clench. It gets worse when she starts to fight back. She feels her entire body tremble at that point, while she starts to lose control over her words and actions. The time bomb started in her stomach and expanded outward from there. Why? Why her stomach? The center of the stomach is your Power center, the home of the 3rd Chakra, ruler of your personal power and how you relate to the external world. It is also how you connect with your personality and ego. If someone is attacking you, you feel it in your Power chakra, in the pit of your stomach. It's your body trying to protect itself from the onslaught. It is one of the first places to become blocked when someone continually is trying to destroy your self-esteem, self-respect, and self-determination. The same happens with the Mother. Her stomach also clenches in these situations. But based on how she was raised, her cultural climate, and perhaps blockages in other chakras, she was taught it was best to not speak out. She's been doing it for years and years. How does managing all that pain internally effect her? Because she's been told for so long that she is dumb or stupid or an idiot, she tells herself that regularly and she has come to believe it. She doesn't try new things because she doesn't think she is smart enough for it. She regularly apologizes for her actions saying she was dumb. Then there's the other manifestations of internalizing abuse. Since she doesn't feel she can control what's going on with the man, she has to be overly controlling in other areas, like cleanliness for one example. (continued page 14)

Samhain 2012

13

Open Ways So what can one do to combat situations like these? To get that stomach to unknot and become calm again? The first step, always, is to recognize there is a problem. Fully feel what is going on with your body and where. Your body always tells you what is going on, even if at first you don't fully understand what it is saying. Next, you have to make a decision. You have to make the decision to COMMUNICATE YOUR TRUTH. Calmly and rationally. At this point, it's about setting your boundaries on what you are prepared to accept in your life. You can start small and build your way up. Choose one thing you need to stand firm on. For example, you could start with that negative self-talk. You know you aren't dumb. So make a solemn promise to yourself to never call yourself dumb again. If you catch yourself doing it, stop that behavior and say something positive about yourself instead. Do it ten times. It takes ten positive statements to erase the psychological effects of one negative statement. Create positive statements as daily affirmations. Write those affirmations on sticky notes and post them on mirrors, at work spaces, in your car. Anywhere you can easily see them and remind yourself that you are worth all the effort you are putting forth. For anger issues, deep breathing is one simple method to connect yourself to your body so you don't get out of control. If you are the type of person who will lash out at others with personal attacks when you get angry, practice communicating "I" statements instead. When you say things like "you are _______", that is a personal attack on the person instead of addressing their behavior. It immediately puts that person on the defensive. Which is exactly what happens when the other person is attacking you, you become defensive. An "I" statement is how you can address the behavior of the person instead of attacking the person. For example, you can say something like "When you call me dumb, I feel as though you don't care about me." You are addressing the behavior specifically, and are expressing how that behavior makes you feel. Then, what you can do is paraphrase what you heard back to them and ask if your understanding of what they said is what they meant. If you stick to the formula of only addressing the behavior and how it makes you feel, that is one step towards communicating your truth. Next issue, we will go over Setting Boundaries and Keeping Them. Always in Your Service

Open Ways Make a Straw Man for Samhain By Patti Wigington, About.com Guide http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/ samhaincrafts/ss/StrawMan.htm

Clearing out the Garden

Make a figure from the leftovers in your garden, and place him in a seat of honor in your home until spring returns. Image Š Patti Wigington 2007

In Julius Caesar's Commentaries, he connects the burning of a wicker man to the Druid practice of human sacrifice -- essentially, the wicker man was a cage in which a real person was placed. Fortunately, that practice died out with the Druids, but many people still like the idea of creating a man from the detritus of the garden at the time of harvest's end. In some Pagan and Wiccan paths, this man is known as the King of Winter, and he can be created in an altar-top size to watch over your home throughout the chilly months.

This is actually one of the easiest and most primitive projects you can do. You can incorporate it into your Samhain rituals, or make one any time. You'll need two bundles of leftover plants out of your garden (if you don't have a garden, it's perfectly fine to gather some plants at the side of the road) and some string. If you're using plants from your garden, feel free to mix and match different branches. The straw man in the photo is made from hyssop, rosemary, and stevia. Make sure one bundle of plants is slightly thicker than the other. (continued on page 16) Samhain 2012

17

Open Ways Create the Body and Head

Gather two bundles of twigs and stems from your garden at the season's end.

With a long piece of string, tie the fatter bundle together about one fourth of the way from the top (See Figure A). This end becomes the head. Add A Pair of Arms

Tie the thinner bundle of branches in place to make your King of Winter's arms.

Separate the bundle a little bit, and slide the thinner bundle of weeds through the center. These will be the arms (Figure B). Use the string and wrap in a criss-cross shape around the body to hold the arms in place. Tie it off to keep it tight, but don't cut the string. (continued on page 17) 18

Samhain 2012

Open Ways Finishing Things Up

Once you've tied off his legs and arms, place your King of Winter in a place where he can watch over your home and garden during the cold months.

Finally, spread the lower part of the fatter bundle apart, forming two halves as the legs. Bring the string down (Figure C) and wrap around the "thighs" to keep the legs in place. If your branches seem like they're too fluffy, tie a small length of string in place around the wrists and ankles; as the greenery dries it won't stick out as much.

This is a very basic design, and you can either leave your straw man as rustic as you like or pretty him up a bit, it's entirely up to you. Save him until Spring, and then burn him as part of your Beltane celebrations. All Images : Image Š Patti Wigington 2007
