Open Ways Letter from the Editor Samhain is almost here! This is my favorite time of year! I was born very close to Samhain and I am always filled with energy at this time of year. The crops are mostly harvested, vegetables and fruits are brightly coloring our pantry shelves and the fall colors of the trees provide beauty at every turn. I find myself thinking of loved ones and ancestors at this time of year. The trials and tribulations they survived, the simple pleasures that brightened their days and the lessons of love, acceptance and survival they can still teach me. I wish you all a blessed Samhain and a Happy New Year! Blessed Be, Angel

It Takes a Village to Raise... a Village Do you have knowledge and spiritual gifts to share with your community? Volunteer to present a workshop at the Northwest Fall Equinox Festival 2014! Please email a description of the workshop you wish to present to nwfef@ninehouses.org. Be sure to include the length of the workshop and any preferred accommodations it might entail.

Do you have BIG MAGICK to share with your community? We are accepting proposals for NWFEF 2015 main ritual! The purpose of NWFEF is to celebrate the harvest. The main theme, ritual, and workshops differ from year to year depending on selection from proposals submitted by community members (you!). Your ritual proposal must have a complete outline; please contact nwfef@ninehouses.org to request "Tips and Tricks", a "rubric" to assist you in composing your proposal. Open Ways Submissions for Open Ways ! Open Ways Gateway to the Pagan Communities is a newsletter for the community by the community. We .EED your contributions! Guidelines for All Contributors We welcome articles up to 3,000 words of a scholarly, historical, news/event, or how-to–nature; letters; music; poetry; rituals for group or solo-practitioners; personal experience; interviews; artwork; etc. Please honor plurality and diversity. Address issues of interest to pagans, Wiccan’s, polytheists, Buddhists, or nature spiritualists. Where appropriate, include bibliographic references, sidebars, and graphics. Manuscripts will be accepted in any readable form; however we prefer articles via email if possible. Manuscripts and letters selected for publication may be edited for clarity, brevity, accuracy, or editorial consistency. Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish your work returned. Never send your only copy! The editorial staff reserves the right to accept or reject any manuscript or work of art submitted for publication. Contributing Columnists (reoccurring) Column writing offers a lot of flexibility as well as a wide-ranging variety of topics on which to expound. Submit a proposal stating the intention of the column and frequency. Contributors that commit to being a reoccurring contributor to 4 or more issues will be given a complementary business card size advertisement. Contributions may be: • Regular features with the same by-line, title, and/or premise. • Of a subject matter that is by nature practical (how-to), historical, literary, ethical, philosophical, educational, social, moral, political, inspirational, magical, or whatever happens to stoke your bellows. • In a style appropriate for the subject matter, the author’s personal taste, and the editors guidelines of this publication. Book reviews We welcome and encourage your written book reviews. These do not need to be scholarly critiques of the material by someone with a lifetime of experience with the subject matter; often the best, most useful reviews are written by those with whom the readership can identify. The book you are reviewing does not need to be a new release. Readers are interested in your reaction to the book: did you enjoy it? Did it provoke any new ideas or change for you? Was it useful? Artwork Open Ways encourages submissions of all kinds of artwork: Larger pieces for the cover, smaller works for illustration, and even smaller ones to accent and fill in. Please be sure your images are high quality jpeg or tif files with 300dpi. Need help, just ask! Poetry We regularly run poetry in each issue, and plan to continue this as long as we have the poems to do so. Poems should be of reasonable length and on Pagan/Wiccan topics. Ones that reflect your personal thoughts and experiences are preferred. Reporting Open Ways needs your stories of events, speakers, and public festivals in your area to share with our readers. Or maybe you went for a walk in the woods and had an interesting experience. These are stories you would share around the circle.

Send submissions to: editor@ninehouses.org openwayseditor@gmail.com World Wide Web: http://ninehouses.org Please DO NOT send the only copy of your work! All submissions will be accepted and/or edited for content at the discretion of the editorial staff.

The Hero’s Journey: The High Priestess By Chrissy Lavielle Originally published SEPTEMBER 24, 2010 · 3:23 PM

What’s behind the curtain? That’s the whole point of this card. The front of the curtain, the part we can see, is alive with green palm trees and crimson pomegranates. It represents our world and all the things we know about it. Everything Else lies behind it, on the Other Side. This is the realm of the subconscious, the hidden memories of things past, present, and future; dark secrets; dangerous knowledge; those umpteen other dimensions mathematicians keep talking about, and all the things that inhabit them and “go bump in the night.” The High Priestess guards the veil between this world and our everyday world. She has the power to give or withhold access to it and all the hidden wisdom it contains. The scroll in her hands suggests that this wisdom is at her fingertips.

Gimel is the Hebrew letter associated with The High Priestess card, and the camel is one of its meanings. To cultures in arid parts of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, camel

Open Ways meat and milk are major sources of protein; and camel bone is carved into jewelry. Even our dim awareness of the High Priestess’s mysteries nourishes our souls and heightens our sense of beauty. The camel carries people and their belongings from place to place, just as The High Priestess transports knowledge from behind the veil into our everyday lives.

Hekate's torches light up even the darkest night, and her three faces see in all directions. I associate Hekate, the ancient Greek goddess of magic, witchcraft and death with the High Priestess. She is the bearer of hidden wisdom and secrets that whisper to us from across the veil as dreams and visions. She rules the magically potent spaces and times between this and that— shorelines, twilight, and timberlines. Like Hermes and Thoth, her torches guide souls to the underworld. But as the protector of women in labor, she also guides souls into this world. Her visions have the power to either heal or bring on madness. At first glance, these appear to be sets of contradictory traits. But to the mystic, birth and death are the same thing, and any healer will tell you that there is a thin line between health and madness. This dual nature echoes the number of the High Priestess—2, as do the black and white pillars and the equal armed cross at her breast.

The Moon is the ruler of this card, and Hekate is usually thought of as a Moon goddess, although she is just as comfortable on earth or in the underworld as she is in the heavens, hence her name, Hekate Trivia—Hekate of the three ways. In her Moon goddess persona, she controls both the ocean tides and the ebbs and flows of our emotions. The High Priestess’s watery blue cloak flows out of the lower right hand corner of the card and forms all the rivers, lakes, ponds and oceans in the rest of the Major Arcana cards.

Open Ways The High Priestess is the yin to the Magician’s yang. Other Goddesses that correlate to the High Priestess are Isis (in her veiled aspect), Selene, Artemis, Diana, and Brigid–any of the ever-virgin (translate: fiercely independent) and/or lunar goddesses. When she appears in a Tarot reading, she signifies a wise, powerful woman; a diviner; or a beautiful, mysterious woman. The card can mean secrets, balance, inner wisdom, the option of stillness, or the suggestion that no decision is necessary at this time. It can also mean that the querent already has the knowledge he is seeking and should inquire within.

Glinda the Good making a dramatic exit In the hero’s journey, The High Priestess is usually a threshold guardian and often has trickster, shapeshifter, or shadow qualities. She may be a mentor/ally, but never of the faithful sidekick sort. She usually appears out of nowhere at opportune times, delivers aid or advice, and then exits in a puff of smoke, or something equally dramatic.

And she makes a most excellent shadow character.

The High Priestess and The Magician, by Hugo Baur I found this marvelous watercolor on Mary K. Greer’s blog and had to share it because it says so much about both the tarot keys and the two magicians who created the Rider-Waite–Smith taro deck. Pamela Colman Smith and Arthur Edward Waite were both members of the Golden Dawn and were more mystics than hard core ceremonial magicians. They both lived at that pivotal time after Queen Victoria’s death when a breath of fresh air was blowing through England bringing with it new ideas and possibilities and magic. But here all similarity ended.

AEW was a scholar and a prolific writer. Some critics feel he was too prolific, but I digress. He was married twice and had one daughter by his first wife. He was The Magician of the pair because the idea, or inspiration of a tarot deck was his, and he is the one who found the artist, outlined the general ideas of the designs, and found a publisher. The basic meaning of The Magician is the manifestation of an idea.

PCS was also a writer, but first and foremost, she was an artist, and not just any sort of artist. She trained at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she was taught to express emotion and ideas indirectly but meaningfully in visual art. Art was both social and spiritual and was a tool for changing the world. and In other words, she was a Symbolist. She knew William Butler Yeats, Aleister Crowley, and several other influential writers and magicians of the time. One of her many theater and avant garde performance jobs involved working for Henry Irving and his stage manager, Bram Stoker (author of the original Dracula), at the famous Lyceum Theater in London. PCS used her magic to look deep within herself, find universal truths and ideas, and communicate them in the form of beautiful, symbolic images. They were so well crafted that they worked in the subconsciouses of those willing to be still and meditate on them like yeast in bread dough. She lived in her imagination and for her art. Physical success would have been nice, but if it meant giving up her art, it wasn’t worth it. Her most valuable possessions were her spiritual and artistic integrity, and she never compromised these. So, unfortunately, she was never able to make very much money, she never married or had children, she died in poverty, and was buried in an unmarked grave. A perfect, but tragic, High Priestess. Hugo Bauer, the creator of the above painting sums it all up nicely: “As the Waite-Smith tarot was the result of a collaboration I only thought it natural to make a double portrait. Nevertheless I don’t hold much sympathy for Waite as he didn’t pay Pamela the money and respect she deserved. Still, without him this deck would never have existed, and his influence on the major arcana was considerable. But no explanation is needed for the fact that I placed Pamela in the centre and on the foreground, as it is her artwork and unbelievable spiritual insight that made the Waite Smith deck so special. I hope that fellow admirers of Pamela will consider this painting to be a truthful homage to an artist that never got the respect she deserved.” SEPTEMBER27,2010 ·5:24 PM

Moon Magic and the High Priestess Several years ago, a group of fabulous women organized a Moon Magic weekend and invited a bunch of their feminine type friends. I was lucky enough to be included. All the attendees, either singly or in groups, had to present a workshop relating to the Moon.

Everyone in the study group I belonged to at the time was going, so we decided to do a workshop

together. The thing we happened to be studying was the tarot major arcana. One of the techniques we used to understand each of the cards was to place ourselves in the position of the figure on the key we were studying and meditate for a few minutes, noticing how the pose made us feel and where our train of thought went. The results were most instructive and really helped us get in tune with the message of each card. So we decided to bring all the stuff in the High Priestess card, which is ruled by the moon, and, over the course of the weekend, dress up each attendee as the High Priestess. We had the white under robe, the deep blue cape, the silver full moon and crescent moons crown, the gray cube that she sits on, the equal armed cross, and the scroll. I think we even had the pillars with the curtain hung between them—although it didn’t have palm trees and pomegranates on it. When each woman was dressed and positioned on the cube with the scroll in her hand we left her to meditate for a

High Priestess mode. When she was finished meditating, she few minutes and get into rang a tiny bell and another woman would enter the room as a seeker and ask the High Priestess a question. We received some amazing answers that left both the priestess and the seeker in awe. These are the words we read to each woman to help her become the High Priestess. You are the High Priestess Your planet is the ever changing, reflective moon, Your element is water, Your color is the blue of the waters of the subconscious, your number is two, meaning duality and balance. Your crown is the waxing, full, and waning moon, The 3 aspects of the goddess.

On your breast is the equal armed cross, which, again, symbolizes balance between active and passive. Behind you is the veil which divides the conscious from the subconscious and obscures the Greater mysteries. You are seated at the nexus point of positive and negative, active and passive, conscious and subconscious, logic and intuition.
