OSTARA Attributes:
Herbs and Flowers:
Eostre, a Germanic Goddess of spring. Represents a Lilac, Viola, Chive, Clover, Sweet Woodruff, and Violet. new day, hope, renewal, fertility, and the sowing of Incense: seeds. Folk Lore:
Jasmine, Rose, Strawberry, Floral of any type.
According to stories, the Goddess of spring is known as Sacred Gemstone: Eostre. She is a Teutonic Goddess associated with flowers and springtime, and her name gives us the Jasper word Easter as well as Ostara. Resources: About Wicca Ostara is also known as the virgin Goddess of spring. Wikipedia.com â˜ş This holiday concerns the deity's trip to the underworld, and their struggle to return from the Land of the Dead to Earth. When they accomplish this return, they have a life renewed. It was considered bad luck to wear anything new before Ostara, so the people would work through the winter in secret to make elegant clothes for the Sabbat celebration. The entire community would gather for games, feasting, and religious rituals while showing off their clothing. “The modern belief that eggs are delivered by a rabbit known as the Easter Bunny comes from the legend of the Goddess Eostre. So much did a lowly rabbit want to please the Goddess that he laid the sacred eggs in her honor, gaily decorated them, and humbly presented them to her. So pleased was she that she wished all humankind to share in her joy. In honor of her wishes, the rabbit went through the entire world and distributed these little decorated gifts of life" Traditional Foods: Most Ostara foods are seasonal spring offerings or are symbolic. Dairy foods are readily available in spring. Green vegetables, rabbit or hare, edible flowers, seeds, eggs and fish are all fitting Ostara fare due to the fact that they represent fertility and springtime. Spring Equinox 2010

Field Trips By Ansur (Pagan Mystery and Cultural Touring plus “Things That Go Bump Continuing down I-5, we stopped in Wolf Creek Oregon where there is a pagan shop across the street from an old restored inn. in the Night”) Our Pagan Spiritual Group goes on Field Trips! This gets us out of merely meeting each other only on Sabbats and Esbats. So, we learn to relate to each other in more, different, and deeper ways. These trips are wonderful group building processes that create better relationships. Additionally, Field Trips are just plain fun! The first one we went on was to Sam Hill‟s famous Maryhill Art Museum in Maryhill, Washington—several miles past The Dallas-and across the river. Beside the art exhibits inside the museum they have very nice picnic area—full of friendly peacocks and outdoor works of art. This whole area is alive with things to do and see, Wineries, the Stonehenge Replica, and Indian pictographs and petroglyphs. On this first trip we also went to the nearby replica of Stonehenge—also built by Sam Hill--to honor the dead of World War I. There we held hands around the altar stone and sang “We all Come From the Goddess.” To our surprise, non-pagan tourists gathered around to listen, smile, and applaud our efforts! It was a magical experience. A few years later we returned to the same area and this time we went to Horse Thief State Park/Columbia State Park to observe the Indian Pictographs and Petroglyphs—including the famous “She Who Watches” pictograph. These ancient images are on posted private Indian land and Saturday-only tours must be arranged in advance. The trail through these images is over a half of a mile round trip and in the summer it is very hot! Make sure you take plenty of water! On our next big trip, we headed south on I-5. On the way, we stopped for lunch at “Heaven on Earth” restaurant in Azalea, Oregon. This is a devout Christian-owned place that has wonderful food. They play hymns (softly) while you eat and when we left they were praying with a motorcycle group in the parking lot. But they don‟t force themselves on you and food and friendliness is worth the oddness. We informed them we were a spiritual group (we didn‟t say what kind) so they put us in their banquet room and began bringing us free samples of their many wares. I thought that this was perhaps because they thought we were fellow members of their religion but I have been there many times since and found that they usually give out free samples… Spring Equinox 2010
Further south, we stayed overnight in three adjacent Yurts that we had reserved at the Rogue River State Park. Then we drove to our main destination which was “The Oregon Vortex” where gravity seems to be messed up. The visual perspectives there are quite odd and we saw some strange phenomena that would be very hard to fake. It was all very entertaining and thought provoking. We have also been to the viewpoints near Mt. Saint Helens, and we have many future trips planned—Ape Caves (2 caves each—one easy and one hard) and the Trail of Two Forests, both of which are near Cougar WA. This year we‟re headed to a spooky ranch-ECETI which is the sanctuary of the “Enlightened Contact with Extra Terrestrial Intelligence” organization—in an area with many UFO sightings. We‟re planning to go on the tour of Underground Portland, and visit The Thyme Garden near Alsea, Oregon (need to have 12 people minimum for certain functions and events), and we know of a couple of haunted cemeteries (one a hidden pioneer cemetery), and have already visited two haunted restaurants and a ghostly lighthouse. One very magical time, we attended some poetry readings and plays at the Stonehenge Replica. These performances lasted from late afternoon into the darkness of the night. They were sponsored by the Maryhill Museum and the performance company placed large brass boils filled with alcohol on top of the surrounding stones. The golden bowls with their blue flames on top of Stonehenge‟s stones was a breath-taking sight that I shall never forget! We stayed overnight in „The Dalles‟ and discovered a fun place to eat with excellent food: “Cousins”. the world.
At SunFest XXII, sponsored by Other Worlds of Wonder (OWOW), we come together as a community to honor this powerful, loving, magical, and very ancient Goddess. We will chant and dance for Her. As the Egyptians did, we will make offering in Her name. The dreamers of Isis will sleep in sacred incubation in Her temple. Together, we will enact Her Bright Mysteries and awaken the Isis Fire in our hearts. A large group of people has been at work on this Festival since last Fall. Here are some of the things we‟ve been doing: • A group of devotees has been working with Isis, coming to know Her so that they may serve as our priestesses and priests during the Festival. • We are building a physical Temple of Isis—complete with pillars inscribed with hieroglyphs, an inner shrine, and a lotus pool. It will be the centerpiece of the Festival site. • We have been working on ways to create many, many opportunities for all Festival-goers to participate hands-on in rituals, meditations, and workshops throughout the Festival weekend.
Open Meditation Held every Thursday and Sunday from 12-2 pm. Open meditation at Crystal Temple 7275 N Richmond. For info 503-2490303 or info@crystaltemple.org.
Rituals will be facilitated by M. Isidora Forrest, author of Isis Magic and Offering to Isis, and our many beautiful priestesses and priests of Isis.
