Open Ways Submissions for Open Ways ! Open Ways Gateway to the Pagan Communities is a newsletter for the community by the community. We EED your contributions! Guidelines for All Contributors We welcome articles up to 3,000 words of a scholarly, historical, news/event, or how-to–nature; letters; music; poetry; rituals for group or solo-practitioners; personal experience; interviews; artwork; etc. Please honor plurality and diversity. Address issues of interest to pagans, Wiccan’s, polytheists, Buddhists, or nature spiritualists. Where appropriate, include bibliographic references, sidebars, and graphics. Manuscripts will be accepted in any readable form; however we prefer articles via email if possible. Manuscripts and letters selected for publication may be edited for clarity, brevity, accuracy, or editorial consistency. Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish your work returned. Never send your only copy! The editorial staff reserves the right to accept or reject any manuscript or work of art submitted for publication. Contributing Columnists (reoccurring) Column writing offers a lot of flexibility as well as a wide-ranging variety of topics on which to expound. Submit a proposal stating the intention of the column and frequency. Contributors that commit to being a reoccurring contributor to 4 or more issues will be given a complementary business card size advertisement. Contributions may be: • Regular features with the same by-line, title, and/or premise. • Of a subject matter that is by nature practical (how-to), historical, literary, ethical, philosophical, educational, social, moral, political, inspirational, magical, or whatever happens to stoke your bellows. • In a style appropriate for the subject matter, the author’s personal taste, and the editors guidelines of this publication. Book reviews We welcome and encourage your written book reviews. These do not need to be scholarly critiques of the material by someone with a lifetime of experience with the subject matter; often the best, most useful reviews are written by those with whom the readership can identify. The book you are reviewing does not need to be a new release. Readers are interested in your reaction to the book: did you enjoy it? Did it provoke any new ideas or change for you? Was it useful? Artwork Open Ways encourages submissions of all kinds of artwork: Larger pieces for the cover, smaller works for illustration, and even smaller ones to accent and fill in. Please be sure your images are high quality jpeg or tif files with 300dpi. Need help, just ask! Poetry We regularly run poetry in each issue, and plan to continue this as long as we have the poems to do so. Poems should be of reasonable length and on Pagan/Wiccan topics. Ones that reflect your personal thoughts and experiences are preferred. Reporting Open Ways needs your stories of events, speakers, and public festivals in your area to share with our readers. Or maybe you went for a walk in the woods and had an interesting experience. These are stories you would share around the circle.
Send submissions to: editor@ninehouses.org openwayseditor@gmail.com World Wide Web: http://ninehouses.org Please DO NOT send the only copy of your work! Submissions unaccompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope will not be returned. All submissions will be accepted and/or edited for content at the discretion of the editorial staff.

I AM The Goddess, ALL Are The Goddess By Char In 1999 Lauren Raine created 30 masks of the Goddess for the Spiral Dance Festival in San Francisco. Her project, The Masks Of The Goddess traveled the world, spreading their message of the divine feminine from community to community. Lauren Raine published a book on her journey titled, The Masks Of The Goddess, Sacred Masks & Dance. Many women wore these masks in ritual theater and dance, bringing their message to their community. In 2008 the masks were retired. I believe their retirement was a necessary resting time, a time to regenerate their energy to bring to the world again. I was drawn to a woman who had 13 of these masks “resting” in her home and care. My proposal to bring 6 masks and their message to our community was welcomed by her with an open heart. She told me she had felt the masks were ready to continue their journey and she had been waiting for the right opportunity. The project, I Am The Goddess, ALL Are The Goddess was born! Brought to you by Nine Houses of Gaia, this project is a vessel for these powerful masks to channel their message of the divine feminine to all who need to hear Her message. The world we live in is changing; the need for divine presence is great. It is a time for all to embrace the message of love, acceptance, peace and healing that the Goddess embodies. Each mask has a unique message to give to the world and all who pause to listen. Each mask represents a powerful archetype Goddess that speaks to us through all time.

Open Ways The Healer by Ton Ton Dreamdancer Since the dawning of time I have lain in your arms Secure from the world finding warmth in your charms The sun was your smile leading which way to go With questions I'd come answers you would show Now the sky had darkened the end of time is near Your arms are torn away destruction instills our fear Winds are growing stronger the Goddess begins to weep A change of time is near children she can not keep On a mountain I stand listening to the wind It wipes tears from my eyes so many souls to tend Knowing what must be done I reach for their pains I feel their insanity yet must remain sane Caressing my feet Earth urges me on I hear trees whispering forgotten ancient songs Darkness envelopes me making me doubt the Art Unknowing fears of chaos despair encircles my heart My mind remembers you I struggle to go on Another dawning of time shall remain unharmed... 10

Basic Spiritual Path Information By Amber Wolf
Summer Solstice – Litha June 21 By: Amberwolf Litha is usually celebrated on June 21st, but varies somewhat from the 20th to the 23rd, dependant upon the Earth's rotation around the Sun. According to the old folklore calendar, Summer begins on Beltane (May 1st) and ends on Lughnassadh (August 1st), with the Summer Solstice midway between the two, marking MIDSummer. This makes more logical sense than suggesting that Summer begins on the day when the Sun's power begins to wane and the days grow shorter. The most common other names for this holiday are the Summer Solstice or Midsummer, and it celebrates the arrival of Summer, when the hours of daylight are longest. The longest day of the year, light and life are abundant. At mid-summer, the Sun God has reached the moment of his greatest strength. Seated on his greenwood throne, he is also lord of the forests, and his face is seen in church architecture peering from countless foliate masks. Although Litha may seem at first glance to be a masculine observance and one which focuses on Lugh, the day is also dedicated to the Goddess, and Her flowers are the white blossoms of the elder. The Goddess is heavy with pregnancy from the mating at Beltane - honor is given to Her. The Sun God is celebrated as the Sun is at its peak in the sky and we celebrate His approaching fatherhood - honor is also given to Him. The faeries abound at this time and it is customary to leave offerings - such as food or herbs - for them in the evening. The joyous rituals of Litha celebrate the verdant Earth in high summer, abundance, fertility, and all the riches of Nature in full bloom. This is a madcap time of strong magic and empowerment, traditionally the time for handfasting or weddings and for communication with the spirits of Nature. At Litha, the veils between the worlds are thin; the portals between "the fields we know" and the worlds beyond stand open. This is an excellent time for rites of divination. The Sabbat is a time to celebrate both work and leisure, it is a time for children and childlike play. It is a time to celebrate the ending of the waxing year and the beginning of the waning year, in preparation for the harvest to come. Midsummer is a time to absorb the Sun's warming rays and it is another fertility Sabbat, not only for humans, but also for crops and animals.

Open Ways Nature Meditation on Amergin By Patti Wigington, About.com Guide Amergin was a leader of the Milesians, one of the ancient tribes that conquered Ireland around 1500 B.C.E., removing the Tuatha de Danaan from power. One of three Druids who spearheaded the takeover, Amergin is referred to as the First Druid of the Gaels in the Irish Book of Invasions. Thought to be the oldest poem in the Irish language, Amergin’s song is lyrical and narrative, evocative of the strength and power of Ireland itself. Poets and bards enjoyed high status in early Celtic society, and Amergin’s song (which is actually a collection of several pieces) reflects that hierarchy, as well as some of the core beliefs held by the Druids and their people. There’s a story that this song answers the question, “What is a Druid?“ This meditation is based on the translation by Lady Gregory. To perform this meditation, begin by choosing a place far from the crowds. Pick a park with wooded hiking trails, find a spot by a calm lake or stream, or sit in the middle of a field of soft grass. Whichever place you select, try to make sure you’re out of the way of everyone else. Now turn off your cell phone so you’re REALLY undisturbed. You don’t have to memorize this incantation, but it helps if you study it a bit ahead of time so you have some focus. You may want to write some notes down to take with you, so you don’t forget where your journey is headed. Sit in a comfortable position -- up against a tree, in a pile of leaves, on a majestic rock, wherever feels right to you. You can even lay down if you prefer. Close your eyes, and just listen. Hear the sounds of nature around you -- birds in the trees, the wind rustling through the grass, the trickling of a creek. Allow yourself to relax. Forget about your job for a while, your bills, your kids, your parents. Just focus on you, and where you are right now, at this moment. As you say each line of the Song of Amergin, stop to reflect on what it means in the natural world, and how it applies to you. I am the wind across a deep, wide lake. I am the wave over the endless sea. I am the stag of seven tines, racing through the woods I am the eagle in the aerie, flying above the rocks I am a flash of light from the sun above, bringing heat to those below I am the blooming plants, bringing sustenance and beauty I am a wild boar, powerful and strong I am the salmon in the water, swimming endlessly upstream I am the hill where poets stroll for inspiration I am the head of the spear the draws blood in battle I am the god that puts fire in the head and honor in the heart Summer Solstice 2012

Open Ways Take time to reflect on each of these thoughts. How do they apply to you and your place in the natural world? Stretch your arms, and take in a deep breath. If you’ve been sitting, stand up. This is a warrior’s song, and to really feel its power, you should be on your feet and facing the sky. These last few lines can be shouted at the top of your lungs if you feel like it. Who spreads light in the gathering on the hills? Who can tell the ages of the moon? Who can tell the place where the sun rests? Think about the answers to these questions. How do they apply to you and your everyday life? How do they apply to your spiritual journey? Take a few more minutes to think, and when you are ready, begin your trek home.
