Welcome Music has a proud tradition in the Kirklees district. This includes classical music being hosted in our magnificent Town Halls since at least the 1920s. As part of this story, the Kirklees Concert Season has evolved over the years to become the very special experience it is today. We are delighted to continue working in partnership with Opera North to deliver a world class music programme in Huddersfield and Dewsbury. Through this special partnership, we continue to develop new ways of delivery to sustain this fabulous offer for our residents. However, we are still in difficult financial times and the scale of the challenges that face Kirklees Council are unprecedented. Despite these current difficulties we will not be defeated. We are rising to the challenges. Further to the necessary changes made last year, you will notice a few new approaches. We need to keep trying different things to find ways to support the orchestral season for years to come. And we will only achieve this, if we work together. So please help us by telling your friends and family about the concerts and encouraging them to come along or make a donation if you are able to - everything helps! I hope you will enjoy this season’s excellent programme of quality music. When times are tough, we need rays of sunshine to brighten our lives, which our music concerts always provide.

Councillor G. Talking Music

The Town Halls come alive with a fantastic and varied programme. There is the organ recital series in Huddersfield, at the heart of which is ever popular Borough Organist Dr. Gordon Stewart; there are enticing chamber events in Dewsbury; and in both our Town Halls there are heart-warming family-friendly concerts plus the best symphonic music in orchestral concerts brought to you by the finest conductors, soloists and players.

Join us for some lively discussion about each performance. Before selected concerts we’ll be ‘Talking Music’ with some of our soloists and conductors. Please see individual concerts for start times.

It is testament to you, the audience, that we continue, because without your support, your attendance and your commitment, there would be no Kirklees Concert Season and that is something we cannot allow to happen. Help us to keep music live in Kirklees.

Come along to our popular Lunchtime Concerts – there are some real treats in store. Priced at only £5, these occasions are a simply delightful way to spend an afternoon. Why not come early and enjoy a pre-concert lunch served from 11.30am?

Dvorˇák  Symphony No. 9 in E minor ‘From the New World’

Both Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances are more well-known than the operas they come from and are arguably the composers’ most renowned works. Similarly, the ‘From the New World’ Symphony has a far greater following than any of Dvorˇák’s other works and, since its première in 1893, has been one of the most performed symphonies worldwide.

October half-term family friendly concert

The Daily Telegraph

Join us this October half-term for the screening of two animated tales from the creators of The Gruffalo with René Aubry’s evocative scores performed by the Orchestra. This early evening concert begins with the first live UK performance of Stick Man, a story of friendship and adventure. After going for a jog one morning, Stick Man encounters a bounding dog, who just wants to play fetch. A series of unfortunate events take him far from home. Will he ever get back? You’ll have to wait and see… The enchanting Room on the Broom follows. The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on her broomstick when – whoosh! – a gust of wind blows away her hat, her bow and her wand! Will she find her missing things? Come along and find out!

Garry Walker returns to Opera North after his critically acclaimed performances of Britten’s Billy Budd. From the arresting opening of the Soirées musicales through to the noble ending of Elgar’s First Symphony, a common thread of stylistic experimentation – sometimes playful, sometimes audacious – unites the works of three markedly different composers.

Talking Music begins at 6.40pm ‘Opera North’s... superb orchestra... delivered a brilliantly vivid, sharply etched account under conductor Garry Walker, full of surging drama and also moments of exquisite contemplation’ The Scotsman

Elena Urioste, former BBC New Generation Artist and yoga fanatic, is a seasoned recitalist and concerto performer, working with numerous American and UK orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony and Hallé Orchestras. Here she takes centre-stage to perform Mozart’s exquisite Violin Concerto No. 5.

Howard Blake  The Snowman

Arguably the most cherished soundtrack to the Christmas season is the score to Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman. This December the Orchestra of Opera North performs the music in all its heart-melting splendour to a live screening of the animation. Sure to captivate the imaginations of young and old alike, this is not only the perfect way to spend time with loved ones, but a wonderful introduction to the thrills, chills and power of a symphony orchestra performing live. Before that, narrator John Savournin delights with the classic rags-to-riches tale of Cinderella with sensational music and illustrations to accompany the story.

‘Brunt’s conducting of every bar, from the opening buzzing bass line to the sudden consonant end assertive, was graceful, just like the music. Wonderful’ The Times

Programme includes: Turina Pérez Evangelio Op. 12

The annual Christmas concert in Dewsbury is a sparkling showcase for Opera North’s different ensembles. With a programme designed to feature its Chorus, Children’s and Youth Choruses, all underpinned by the exceptional Orchestra, you’ll be inspired to join in with the audience carols in a concert that will certainly get you into the festive spirit. Having brought the curtain down on the last Kirklees Concert Season with an unforgettable programme of Sibelius, Bruch and Strauss, Adrian Leaper returns to conduct the massed forces. There’s a distinctly Mediterranean feel to the concert as he brings a flavour of his adopted home of Spain to Dewsbury.

The other perennial favourite of the Kirklees Concert Season is of course the Viennese Whirl conducted this year by Justin Brown, General Music Director of Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Germany, and Music Director Laureate of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Equally at home on the symphonic platform as on the operatic podium, Justin will close another year of culture in Kirklees with a traditional musical trip through Austria-Hungary, a glittering world of waltzes, polkas, marches and song.

Talking Music begins at 3.10pm ‘…a rising star in the conducting world.’ Esslinger Zeitung on Ben Gernon

The programme also includes Mozart’s muchloved Symphony No. 31, ‘Paris’ before we introduce our guest vocalist for the evening, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Kathryn Rudge. Elgar’s Sea Pictures, a setting of five poems set to music for mezzo-soprano, were premièred in 1899 by Clara Butt dressed as a mermaid! To celebrate the Bernstein centenary, we close this year’s Kirklees Concert Season with a concert of American music, including his iconic Symphonic Dances from the ground-breaking, award-winning musical West Side Story. Gershwin’s epic Rhapsody in Blue needs no introduction; it serves to fuse jazz and classical elements showcasing the versatility of the Orchestra, soloist Sofya Gulyak (2009 Leeds International Piano Competition winner) and Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska. John Adams’ The Chairman Dances follows. Taken from his opera Nixon in China, the piece is also known as Foxtrot for Orchestra and it’s easy to understand why given its rhythmic drive. The concert concludes with Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances. Written while he was in New York, this colourful composition is a wonderful way to mark the close of this year’s Kirklees Concert Season.

One of the pieces most requested by the lunchtime organ audience is Julius Reubke’s Sonata on the 94th Psalm. It is an astonishing piece, generally acknowledged to be one of the pinnacles of organ composition of the 19th Century and written by a composer who died at the age of just 24. The concert opens with the first Huddersfield performance of the American virtuoso Frederick Swann’s Trumpet Tune.

Richard Gowers was until recently Organ Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge where he played for the world-famous choir and played and conducted regular concerts. Asked about playing for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols he said it was a real privilege, especially as the worldwide audience is estimated at 140 million. His programme reflects his wide range of musical interests, and includes a piece by Yorkshire born Alfred Hollins.
