Kirklees Concert Season 2018/2019
WELCOME We are pleased to welcome you to the 2018/2019 Kirklees Concert Season. We are proud that our partnership with Opera North continues to develop, and we remain committed to work together to create a more sustainable future. Kirklees Council recognises the value of music in having a role to play in our towns and villages, and we appreciate that Kirklees is a district of world class music that stands proud on its rich and diverse musical heritage. Music is the beat of our heart, it is the sound of our communities and it is the pulse of our towns and villages.
There is a strong tradition of music-making in the district which the Council wishes to build upon in order to promote the area and bring communities together, and the Kirklees Concert Season is integral to this work. We hope you enjoy the array of musical delights in this season’s programme of Orchestral, Chamber and Organ concerts.
The Council’s commitment to maintaining world class music-making in Kirklees, and its resolve to keep culture at the centre of everyday life through support for the arts, is confirmed by the dedication shown by our audiences. Culture, after all, is what binds a community together. Attesting to the vital role of art in our lives, the centenary of the Armistice is commemorated throughout this season in compositions from the time, works directly influenced by the repercussions of war, or pieces looking retrospectively at the events of a hundred years ago.

At just £5 per concert, and with lunch available from 11.30am at the Town Halls, this is a great way to meet friends and spend an afternoon listening to a variety of music.

Highlands of Home
Arnold, Debussy, Bruch, Mendelssohn Garry Walker returns to Huddersfield to open the Kirklees Concert Season with a programme inspired by his homeland. Scottish landscapes have captured the imaginations of composers throughout Europe for centuries. Based on folk melodies from across the border, and one from poet Robert Burns, Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances feature clever imitations of bagpipes – an instrument synonymous with Scotland and a fitting way to herald the start of the concert. With its unmistakable Scottish flair, Debussy’s Marche Écossaise is filled with pastoral variations building to a dramatic conclusion; and a twilight visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel was the spark for Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3.

Wings
with live score We mark the centenary of both the end of World War I and the formation of the Royal Air Force with a special screening of the 1927 silent film, Wings, with Carl Davis’ 1993 live score performed in sync with the movie. The winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929, Wings is a romantic action picture written and directed by combat pilots John Monk Saunders and William Wellman. In a small town in America, rivals Jack and David both vie for the affections of Sylvia Lewis. As romance starts to blossom, both men are called up to enlist and the pandemonium of war threatens to tear the lovers apart. For this commemorative concert screening, we’re pleased to welcome conductor Carl Davis CBE to the podium to conduct his own score for this landmark film.

The Songs of War Will Todd and Górecki
Former Music Director of Opera North, Richard Farnes returns to the helm of the Orchestra to present the world premiere of Will Todd’s Songs of Love and Battle. Dedicated to Opera North’s youth ensembles, Todd’s commission is a micro opera depicting the conflicting emotions of war through the words and poems of Maggie Gottlieb. Renowned for their melodic intensity and harmonic invention, Todd’s best-known works include Mass in Blue, The Blackened Man and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Górecki’s third symphony, known as his ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’, picks up the theme of loss and separation caused by conflict through three Polish texts. The second text, a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, is arguably one of the most famous pieces of music from the late 20th Century.

The Gruffalo’s Child and The Highway Rat Our family event is a double-bill of Julia Donaldson creations accompanied live by René Aubry’s original orchestral scores. When the Gruffalo’s child disobeys her father’s warning, our heroine sets out on a magical adventure into the deep, dark wood. This delightful sequel to The Gruffalo is a number one best-seller, and a must for the Christmas calendar. Premièred last year on BBC One on Christmas Day, The Highway Rat tells the tale of a ravenous rat who, craving all sweet things, tears along the highway searching for sugary treats to steal, until his sweet tooth leads him to a sticky end. With the voices of David Tennant (Highway Rat), Rob Brydon (Narrator), Frances de la Tour (Rabbit), Tom Hollander (Squirrel), Nina Sosanya (Duck) and Husaam Kiani (Kitten). This enchanting concert is a wonderful panto alternative that’s perfect for all ages.

Featuring settings of medieval and 16th Century poems, this popular cantata was composed by Britten on a dangerous wartime voyage across the Atlantic, as he returned to England from New York. This December marks the 75th anniversary of its first complete performance, conducted by Britten himself in the Wigmore Hall. The second half will feature Opera North’s Chorus accompanied by the Orchestra with a miscellany of festive classics, seasonal treats and of course, audience carols!

Music of Consequence Wagner, Ravel and Shostakovich
Thursday 24 January, 7.30pm Huddersfield Town Hall
Few pieces demonstrate the effects of war more starkly than Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D major, written for the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I. This extraordinary work will be performed by award-winning French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, a renowned exponent of Ravel’s music who makes his Kirklees début alongside conductor Christoph Altstaedt.

Wagner Ravel Shostakovich
Tristan and Isolde: Prelude and Liebestod Piano Concerto in D major Symphony No. 15
Sandwiching the concerto are Shostakovich’s 15th and final symphony, and Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde. Shostakovich’s 15th is a profound piece where nothing is quite as it seems. Quotations from other musical works litter the symphony, none more poignantly than the leitmotif from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde.

Russian Spirits
Lyadov, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev
Sunday 24 February, 4.30pm Huddersfield Town Hall
Conductor The legendary Russian nymph, Kikimora, inspired Lyadov’s tone poem for orchestra, feeding the composer’s Piano fascination with folklore. Darkly expressive, the piece Lyadov evokes the sprite’s evil intentions for the world.
From the unmistakable opening horn chords to the folk tunes woven throughout the thematic material, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is a masterpiece of concerto writing. Boris Giltburg, lauded across the globe as a deeply sensitive, insightful and compelling musician, débuts in Kirklees to perform the expressive solo. Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 is an homage to the spirit of man. Inspired in the summer of 1944, during World War II, this symphony is distinctly Prokofiev in both substance and style and quotes his beloved ballets Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet. Fresh from conducting Opera North’s new production of Tosca, we’re pleased to welcome Antony Hermus to the podium for the afternoon’s concert. 12

Reflections
Lutosławski, Strauss and Bruckner Following her vibrant UK début at the Kirklees Concert Season in March 2018, Dalia Stasevska returns to conduct our season finale, opening the concert with Lutosławski’s intense Musique Funèbre for small string orchestra. Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs are the composer’s gloriously serene and transcendent swansong, with reflections on life and death woven throughout the piece. The vocal lines, supported by solo horn, are a poignant reminiscence on his upbringing and are renowned as some of the most stunning song settings in the canon.

Dalia Stasevska Ana Maria Labin Musique Funèbre Four Last Songs Symphony No. 7
Talking Music begins at 6.40pm
There are few finer culminations to a symphony than the ending of Bruckner’s 7th, and the great adagio is a song of farewell. Bruckner’s music was given little appreciation in his lifetime, but the Seventh Symphony was an exception; an unqualified success at its première in 1884, it remains one of his most popular works. Inspired by Richard Wagner, our Wagner tubas get an outing too as part of the phalanx of brass performing. 13

A delightful romp through the risqué wit of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas. Jeremy Peaker (Chorus of Opera North and formerly D’Oyly Carte) and friends will guide you through extracts of much-loved favourites from the likes of The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, Trial By Jury and many, many more in an afternoon of music and merriment, with backstage anecdotes from the group’s time performing G&S classics on tour.
Never tried opera before? Dip your toe in with Opera North’s brilliant pop up opera. Be entertained by a group of professional opera singers and an accordionist, who will make you laugh – maybe even cry – in an operatic taster packed with comedy, deceit, love and tragedy. Be treated to scenes and songs from a variety of operas and experience what opera does best: everyday emotions amplified by epic music.
The first of two concerts with Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North David Greed and acclaimed pianist Ian Buckle, Songs of Love and War is a poignant reflection in homage to the centenary of WWI. Both Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin for piano, and Elgar’s Sonata for Violin and Piano were created from the composers’ personal connections to the conflict and are a fitting way to mark the Armistice at Dewsbury Town Hall.
The ever-popular Christmas Brass Band concert returns to Dewsbury Town Hall with an abundance of festive favourites that are sure to get you in the seasonal spirit. A joyful sleigh-ride through holiday classics including pieces synonymous with the season along with carols to sing, this rousing concert is a must for your Christmas calendar.

Monday 24 September, 1.00pm
The season opens with Noel Rawsthorne’s rousing ‘March’, then the wonderfully varied programme ranges from the opening fantasia from Bach’s ‘Leipzig Chorales’ to Mendelssohn’s last sonata for organ and Enrico Bossi’s seldom heard ‘Toccata’.
The Father Willis Grand Organ is one of the finest concert organs in the country. Changes made by Harrison and Harrison in 1980 gave it many of the colours required in French Classical music, such as Louis Marchand’s massive ‘Grand Dialogue’ which opens the concert. Best remembered now for his Canon, Johann Pachelbel wrote a huge amount of other music, including this beautiful ‘Chaconne’.

A recording on the Huddersfield Willis organ by the former Borough Organist, Jonathan Bielby, brought Lefébure-Wély’s Sortie back into the repertoire. Although a sortie would normally be played at the end of a service, this one, almost fairground music, makes a lively start to a wideranging programme. Starting and ending in Paris, it journeys to Austria, Germany and England in between.
The Halloween concert gives the Town Hall’s Technicians a chance to show off their lighting effects for the Lunchtime audiences! Although some of the pieces appear regularly in this programme, Garth Edmundson’s Gargoyles is being heard for the first time.

Monday 26 November, 1.00pm
We’re pleased to welcome Leeds Town Hall’s new organist Darius Battiwalla to Huddersfield. Last year Darius played a programme in Hull which included several pieces by Alfred Hollins, who was born in the city. Gordon Stewart asked him to include two of those pieces in this Huddersfield programme, the very beautiful ‘Intermezzo’ and the virtuosic ‘Concerto Toccata’.
One of the most remarkable stops on the Father Willis organ is the Grand Tuba which will certainly be in evidence in the opening piece, Christopher Morris’s arrangement of Verdi’s Grand March. Georg Böhm’s Vater unser follows – one of the most beautiful pieces in the Baroque organ repertoire – with Liszt’s Fantasia and Fugue on a theme from Meyerbeer’s opera, The Prophet, ending our programme. Described as a ‘Gothic masterpiece’, the piece is perfectly suited to the Huddersfield Willis organ.

Andrew Dewar is one of the finest organists of his generation. For his first Huddersfield concert he has chosen a wonderfully varied programme including Ivor Atkins’s arrangement of Elgar’s Severn Suite, originally written for brass band, a movement from Whitlock’s Sonata, and César Franck’s exciting Final.
When Huddersfield Town Hall was being built, a son of the town, Walter Parratt, then organist at Magdalen College, Oxford, advised the Council to purchase an organ which Henry Willis had built for an exhibition hall in South Wales, but which they no longer required. Parratt played the opening concert in 1881. For this concert, you’ll hear Stanford, Parry, Howells and Erlebach works which were all dedicated to him.
Tom Osborne, Co-Principal Trumpet in The Hallé, is a Huddersfield lunchtime favourite. This year the programme includes Jean Baptiste Loeillet’s beautiful Sonata and the ‘Love Theme’ from Morricone’s music for Cinema Paradiso. It has become a tradition that Tom ends his Huddersfield recitals with a virtuoso piece for cornet; this year it’s Percy Code’s Caprice Zelda.
The season ends with another real Town Hall programme – a major Bach work, a couple of transcriptions, a little jazz and a virtuoso piece to end. The Willis Grand Tuba will be heard in a work written especially for Gordon Stewart and the Huddersfield organ.
