Kirklees Concert Season 2019/2020

WELCOME The 2019/2020 Kirklees Concert Season is extra special as it marks the first season in our journey towards Year of Music 2023. This initiative is part of a regional cultural programme, led by the Leeds City Region. Building on the district’s musical heritage and culture through partnership, such as our ongoing collaboration with Opera North, we can plan for a year that celebrates all our diverse musical programmes, festivals, genres and communities. The 2023 Year of Music will put Kirklees and our partners firmly on the musical map of the country and will establish Kirklees as a cultural centre for all forms of music. We are really proud of our continuing relationship with Opera North: the season goes from strength to strength and we are delighted with the diversity of our latest programme, from family concerts and the annual Viennese Whirl to bringing the very

best of classical music to Huddersfield and Dewsbury throughout the season. In addition to the classical and chamber concerts, we are very pleased to see the lunchtime organ concerts increasing audiences year on year.

Support the Season This year’s Kirklees Concert Season once again showcases some of the finest talent from around the world in Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls. Kirklees Borough Organist, Gordon Stewart brings a typically eclectic lunchtime programme to Huddersfield Town Hall, designed to stimulate and entertain, and to give the full range of the Father Willis organ a regular workout. As we look towards the 2023 Year of Music, Opera North’s unique partnership with Kirklees Council is more vital than ever. We will all have experienced the power of music to bridge gaps and to unite people, and as part of the Orchestral Season we are particularly thrilled to be able to present a meeting of East and West in the

world premiere of a concerto for sitar and orchestra, a first for both Opera North and Kirklees, in February 2020. Our Chamber Concert Season in Dewsbury highlights the talent within Opera North and gives our musicians the opportunity to perform in a far more intimate situation than they experience on the symphonic stage or in the pit.

Find out how you can help to excite and engage generations to come. More information can be found on page 18.

School Groups

I hope you enjoy the season and look forward to welcoming you to the concerts.

Gordon Stewart begins 2020 with a varied programme of music from five countries, several of which have never been performed in the season before. The final piece is the wonderful first movement of Widor’s sixth symphony.

Christopher Stokes, organist at Manchester Cathedral since 1992, has chosen a programme in two halves; the first French, the second English. One piece to note is the Suite Laudate Dominum by Peter Hurford, who died in March 2019. George McPhee has been organist of Paisley Abbey since 1963; this performance of his Prelude on Highland Cathedral will be its premiere outside Scotland. Max Reger wrote much of his finest music for organ, and his Opus 59 works are great pieces for those new to organ music. The programme ends with Franz Liszt’s great tribute to J.S. Bach.

Tom Osborne, co-principal trumpet in The Hallé, is a Huddersfield lunchtime favourite. This year the programme includes Telemann’s wonderful Concerto and Philip Sparke’s beautiful Soliloquy. It’s a Kirklees tradition that Tom ends his Huddersfield recitals with a virtuoso piece for cornet; this year it’s Bellstedt’s Napoli.

Frederick Swann has been organist of some of the largest churches in America, including the Crystal Cathedral in California. The famous Father Willis Tuba will be in evidence in his Trumpet Tune. César Franck wrote his three chorals right at the end of his life; the third is by far the most popular and will be a real crowd pleaser.
