When I was approached by Opera North to compose children’s songs in response to Friday Afternoons as part of Benjamin Britten’s centenary celebrations, I jumped at the chance to work with librettist Selma Dimitrijevic to create original text for the songs. The two songs have very different aims: Pi (a Pie?) directly relates to my interest in involving ideas from mathematics and science within musical settings. Selma and I asked ourselves the question “If you hear the word ‘pi(e)’ which springs to mind first? The thought of the never-ending number pi or the image of a delicious mouth-watering pie?”. As a result the song is divided into two parts: a part for number-people and a part for picture-people, for we think that number-people are as excited by numbers as picture-people are about images. And as for BIG BUMS, well, we both would have liked to have had the opportunity to sing/shout “BIG BUMS!” when we were at school.... I have dedicated the two songs to Eva Latham who directed Oxton St. Saviours’ Junior Choir when I was a member (a long time ago).

When I was asked to write two songs as sequels to Britten’s Friday Afternoons, I immediately thought of John Clare’s Little Trotty Wagtail, one of the first poems I liked as a child. Clare was born in Helpstone, Northamptonshire, in 1793. He had minimal education and seemed destined to become an agricultural labourer like his father, but from his childhood he was an avid reader and determined to be a poet. He was successful: his first book of poems was published in 1820 and he was soon something of a celebrity in London. But Clare was mentally unstable, and spent the last 25 years of his life in an asylum in Northampton, where he wrote his most famous poem, the sonnet I am – yet what I am, none cares or knows, and where he died in 1864. Most of his poems are celebrations of the natural world, of which he was as acute an observer as Wordsworth. A number of them are about birds. Little Trotty Wagtail, one of his last poems, written in the asylum, describes the characteristic movements of the Pied Wagtail very accurately and with great charm. As a companion, I chose Crows in Spring, a delightful evocation of spring coming to the village where Clare grew up. In my setting of this poem some of the performers play guiros to imitate the sound of cawing – with which everyone will be familiar as the Carrion Crow is one of our commonest birds.

Two Ghostly Songs Text: Anon

When I got a request for two songs for the Friday Afternoons project I immediately went in search of my copy of Come Hither - that wonderful anthology made by Walter de la Mare in the 1920s. I feel sure that Britten had a copy since so many of his more unusual texts can be found in it. I found a short riddle-like piece, Waes Me, that I have known since my own childhood, and as a companion an even stranger ghostly dialogue. Both poems seem to stem from the Borders and have strange scots spellings I have set these in straightforward English. Pronounce everything with a north-country accent and all should be clear (e.g. "Wae's Me" is "Woe is me" pronounced "Ways me").
