Light Night: I am yours, yours am I, Autumn 2014

SOUNDINGS: taking the musical temperature of northern Europe, looking at place, tradition and the contemporary.

LIBERTY Words Saturday 17 January 7.45pm £5 Presented by DARE in association with the University of Leeds ‘Brilliant...some of it will make you sad, some of it will make you furious, but you are guaranteed to be left feeling that you understand this country much better.’ Journalist John Lanchester on Private Island

4

James Meek Private Island

In a little over a generation, the bones and sinews of the British economy – rail, energy, water, postal services, municipal housing – have been sold to remote, unaccountable private owners. In a series of panoramic accounts, novelist and journalist James Meek explores the human stories behind the incremental privatisation of Britain’s assets. He analyses the winners who reap the rewards, and those who pay the ever rising bill. The evening will be introduced and chaired by Dr Kirsteen Paton, Lecturer in School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds.

Icebreaker

Friday 23 January 7.45pm £15

Kraftwerk Uncovered

Save 20% ‘Icebreaker’s reinterpretations seemed to delve deep into Kraftwerk’s innards, discovering something messy and frightening but more interesting’ The Guardian

Following their highly successful Apollo tour, contemporary orchestra Icebreaker focus on the music of Kraftwerk. Drawing from the sonic legacy of Kraftwerk’s back catalogue, they move from the radical early albums to the iconic synthesised material and feature music from Autobahn, Computer World and Trans-Europe Express. Kraftwork’s music is reworked by German soundscape artist J. Peter Schwalm, the evening articulates Kraftwerk’s journey from experimental Krautrock band to international icon, with film by Sophie Clements and Toby Cornish. Purposefully detaching themselves from the dehumanised hightech of current Kraftwerk shows, this is a nostalgic vision of an earlier era of technological innovation. Bombino With support

Guitarist and singer Omara ‘Bombino’ Moctar is the latest Saharan musician to make a meteoric rise in the West. Born and raised in Agadez, Niger, Bombino is a member of the Tuareg Ifoghas tribe, a nomadic people descended from the Berbers of North Africa. Rolling Stone magazine called his 2013 Nomad album ‘the most exciting blues album of the year’, in which his supple licks and grooves find an extra crunch and touch of sweetness from arrangements by Dan Auerbach (Black Keys). Bombino’s intensity and unflashy brilliance make this an unmissable performance from him and his band.

‘Singer and guitarist Bombino emerges from the dunes of the Sahara with his desert folk dancing in the flames. Absolutely magical.’ Les Inrockuptibles

Friday 6 March 7.00pm £5

Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or award-winning film is a spellbinding tale of bigotry and brutality, set in a north German village immediately before the outbreak of the First World War.

Saturday 21 March 7.45pm £12.50

A UK premiere from one of the great electronic musicians.

Dir Michael Haneke; Austria/German 2009; in German with English subtitles; 144 mins; Cert 15

Shot in austere monochrome, The White Ribbon is as tense as a thriller and as unsettling as a horror film. The film shines a light onto an unjust social system that is morally and physically disintegrating, though no one is prepared to confront it.

‘It feels like a ride, like the music transports you bodily from one place to the next’ Pitchfork

‘Haneke’s films always feel, once the credits have rolled, unstoppable. This one surely is.’ The Guardian

22

Sparing with his solo releases, electronic guitarist Christian Fennesz has constantly extended his avenues of expression through collaborations with other artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto and Mike Patton and by creating music for film.

The White Ribbon will be introduced by Rachel Green from the Centre for World Cinemas at the University of Leeds.

In this rare UK performance, Fennesz joins forces with visual artist Lillevan. This special project, performed for the first time in the UK, takes inspiration from Bohemian composer Gustav Mahler, whose music is transformed by Fennesz’s characteristic clouds of distortion, drones and infinitely slowly evolving melody.
