FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR

Greg Carpenter

At the close of the 2015 fiscal year, Opera Colorado obtained a budget surplus of $100,000. This marks the third year in a row that Opera Colorado has generated a surplus by the close of the fiscal year. Ticket sales again exceeded budgeted goals in 2015 and fundraising met or exceed goals in the various budget lines. The 2014-2015 Season was an exciting year artistically as well as financially. We opened the season in November with a wonderful production of Madama Butterfly featuring the exquisite Shu Ying Li and we hosted Champaign Gala 2015 in February with an intimate performance by Cynthia Clayton and the Opera Colorado Young Artists. We rounded out our season with a new Opera Colorado production of Mozart’s The Magic

Flute in May, 2015. For this production, new sets were created and the dialogue reduced with a new English translation so that the production felt fresh, relevant and entertaining. Both mainstage productions met with outstanding praise and reviews.

of developing a five-year strategic plan focused on expanding Opera Colorado’s civic footprint, developing new artistic initiatives and creating an exciting vision for the future. Further development and finalization of the strategic plan is anticipated for September 2016.

Throughout the 2014-2015 season the Opera Colorado Young Artists were hard at work delivering educational programs to communities throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. During this year, all of the programs were sold-out and resources maximized serving over 35,500 students of all ages throughout Colorado.

Thank you for your support of Opera Colorado and we look forward to continuing to bring the highest quality of live opera performances to audiences of all ages throughout Colorado. I look forward to greeting you at one of Opera Colorado’s performances in the near future.

In addition, on March 8, 2015 a concert reading was presented of the one-hour touring version of Lori Laitman’s The Scarlet Letter performed by the Young Artists. The performance played to an enthusiastic sell-out audience and served as a kick-off to the Indigogo Crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $11,700 in support of the full-length world premiere production of The Scarlet Letter in May, 2016. Thanks to the generosity of Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, Opera Colorado’s board and staff worked with noted arts consultants WolfBrown to begin the process

PRODUCTIONS Opera Colorado’s 2014-2015 season featured a traditional production of Madama Butterfly and a new Opera Colorado production of The Magic Flute. Both mainstage productions were performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Madama Butterfly

Opened the season on November 15, 2014, to critical acclaim: “There is nothing about this “Butterfly” that is not a resounding success. It represents a high artistic watermark for Opera Colorado, and Li’s star power is of a magnitude rarely seen on the Ellie stage…. Any description of Chinese soprano Xiu Ling Li’s depiction of the title character is inadequate. It is a legendary performance of extreme emotional nuance and expression, veering effortlessly from naïve enthusiasm to devastating pathos.” – Daily Camera

Madama Butterfly

“Her naive hopefulness for her husband’s return after a threeyear abandonment culminates in opera’s most beloved aria “Un bel di,” which she sings mindfully with heartfelt passion. – examiner.com

The Magic Flute Opened on May 2, 2015. Two performances sold out.

The Magic Flute

“There are other fine vocals, coming when it counts from Jonathan Boyd, as the protagonist Tamino, and Maureen McKay, as his beloved Pamina. Both sing with considerable warmth and they are paired well.” – The Denver Post

DEVELOPMENT solicitation plans and pull progress reports. The team also spent a significant amount of time setting up current and future campaigns, cleaning individual donor accounts and campaign data in Raiser’s Edge for efficient and accurate conversion to Tessitura. CHAMPAGNE GALA 2015 On February 6, 2015 Opera Colorado held the Champagne Gala 2015, featuring soprano Cynthia Clayton and the Young Artists in an intimate performance with the audience on the stage, dinner at Kevin Taylor’s at the Opera House and dancing in the lobby. The event raised a net of $93,137 for Opera Colorado, and guests enjoyed gift bags with several highend prizes sponsored by Cherry Creek Shopping Center and several local businesses. A silent auction featured one-of-a-kind experiences and luxurious items.

ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund campaign was strong in 2015. In FYE 2015, the company had a year-end surplus of $106,000 over projections. Total Annual Fund was $1,428,000. INDIVIDUAL GIVING AND GRANTS During the 2015 Fiscal Year, $665,000 was awarded from Trusts and Foundations to Opera Colorado through the company’s grant writing and foundation relations efforts. Grants ranged from $1,000 to $125,000 and supported operating costs,

production expenses and education programs. Individual Giving efforts were divided into three foci: Individual Donations, Board Contributions and Sponsorships. Opera Colorado also diversified the methods used to raise money, experimenting with crowdfunding and digital fundraising tactics through emails and social networks. Throughout the year, the Development staff underwent training on the Tessitura Client Relationship Management system including how to input donations, alter donor records, create

THE SCARLET LETTER CONCERT READING AND CROWDFUNDER On March 8, 2015, Opera Colorado kicked-off a crowdfunding campaign for the 2016 world premiere of The Scarlet Letter in conjunction with a sold-out concert reading of selections from upcoming opera, performed by the Young Artists in the Studio Loft at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The crowdfunder raised $11,720 to go towards funding the 2016 world premiere of this New American Opera.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Opera Colorado reached a total of 38,184 students and adults during the 2014-15 school year through programs conducted by the Education & Community Engagement department. This is an increase of 6,623 over the 2013-14 totals and the highest numbers served in recorded company history. On February 7, Opera Colorado presented Family Day at the Opera, sponsored by the PB & K Family Foundation. Two sold-out Programs for students reached a total of 27,101 from 83 Colorado schools during the 2014-2015 school year. performances took place on the stage of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House with the audience seated on the stage, providing an intimate performance setting. Refreshments were provided by the sponsor to each attendee, and pre-performance family activities and crafts took place in the lobby.

9 | OPERA COLORADO | ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015

Community and audience development programs for adults reached 11,083 during this season. Higher than previous seasons, this number reflects a focus on expanding adult programming. Numbers for the Arias & Ensembles program were especially strong. Opera Colorado provided $5,211 in scholarships, allowing 3,313 students/ adults from 16 schools and one community venue to attend Backstage Workshops, Student Dress Rehearsals, the Student Matinee, Arias & Ensembles and In-School Performances.

EDUCATION INCOME For the first time in recent history, the Education & Community Engagement department met and exceeded income goals in the 2014-2015 budget. This was largely in part to the extreme popularity of The Magic Flute. MARKETING

Cast of Madama Butterfly

MADAMA BUTTERFLY AND THE MAGIC FLUTE TICKET SALES Ticket sales for Madama Butterfly and The Magic Flute totaled $1,079,311. This represents $148,311 over sales projections or 115.9% of goal. Two performances of The Magic Flute were sold-out. ADVERTISING The 2014-2015 season was advertised on/in 5280 Magazine, CBS4, Colorado Public Radio, The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain PBS and Yellow Scene Magazine. In addition, print advertising included program books of the Colorado Symphony, Colorado Ballet, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Central City Opera, Bravo! Vail and Santa Fe Opera, as well as Opera America Magazine.

Outdoor advertising included seven marquees downtown, the Denver Performing Arts Complex light rail station and banners and signs in the galleria of the Complex. Opera Colorado also conducted advertising campaigns in Cherry Creek Shopping Center, as well as performances in the center by the Young Artists to promote each of the mainstage productions. INSIDE OC Opera Colorado held a free kick-off event for Inside OC (the initiative for young professionals) on October 28, 2014 at Forest Room Five, in conjunction with Cross Cultured (Denver’s Young Professionals Arts Organizations Collaborative). This event saw approximately 30 people in attendance. The Young

13 | OPERA COLORADO | ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015

Artists performed a short program followed by a Q&A lead by Cherity Koepke, director of the Young Artists program. This format proved to be successful in giving young professionals an inside look at the world of opera, offering interaction with the Young Artists and creating excitement around Inside OC. Although there were a few sales generated from this event, the program still experienced difficulty in gaining traction and ticket sales. For The Magic Flute, the company adjusted the pricing structure for Inside OC in order to offer a more affordable entry price point by give the option of choosing pricing levels based on seating locations rather than one fixed package rate. This helped to generate a few more ticket sales of patrons joining at the $75 price point versus the previously fixed $139 price point per opera. The Inside OC event before The Magic Flute at the Edge Bar in the Four Seasons hotel proved the most successful so far in the short history of the program. TESSITURA IMPLIMATION In November, 2014, Opera Colorado began the Implementation/ conversion to a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system called Tessitura, today’s premier arts enterprise software used by performing arts and cultural organization to manage all ticketing, fundraising, marketing and others aspects of patron relationships. This database replaced Raiser’s Edge,

MARKETING Ticketmaster, Patron Technology Systems and several other less effective database tracking and transaction systems which Opera Colorado previously utilized. In April 2014, Opera Colorado successfully completed the first roll-over conversion of season tickets in Tessitura and conducted the season ticket renewal campaign for the 2015/2106 season in the new database. From this point forward, all season ticket sales for Opera Colorado took place within Tessitura, while single tickets sales for The Magic Flute marked the last performance in which Opera Colorado tickets were sold via Ticketmaster. By the end of the 2015 fiscal year on June 30, 2015, the company also completed the successful conversion of the Development database from Raiser’s Edge to Tessitura. Education and further marketing history data conversions are slated for the 2016 fiscal year, as the

company continues to refine and expand its utilization of Tessitura. WEBSITE/EMAIL MARKETING In conjunction with the Tessitura conversion, Opera Colorado’s marketing department oversaw the implementation of the website interface program for Tessitura called TNEW, which links online ticket sales and donations directly to Tessitura. This new system enables patrons to access their Opera Colorado accounts directly on the company’s website to order tickets and make donations. In conjunction with using TNEW for website sales and transactions, Opera Colorado integrated a new email marketing system called WordFly, which replaced Constant Contact as the email marketing platform. WordFly interfaces directly with the Tessitura database. This enables Opera Colorado to implement highly targeted email marketing campaign strategies, which result in an increase of sales and attendance at Opera Colorado events.

STAFF New Patron Services Manager In conjunction with the start of the Tessitura conversion, Opera Colorado brought onboard Tom Kirkpatrick as a Tessitura consultant to guide and oversee the company’s conversion to Tessitura. He consulted part-time, remotely from Lancaster, PA to guide Opera Colorado’s preliminary set up and preparation for the conversion, until his relocation to Colorado in February 2015 when he joined the company full-time as Patron Services Manager. His current position as Patron Services Manager encompasses overseeing all ticketing, as well as the overall management of Tessitura in support of all Opera Colorado departments including education, marketing and development. Digital Marketing Assistant Manager Position Added To assist with Opera Colorado’s increasing needs in the digital realm of marketing, it became necessary to hire a full-time digital marketing assistant manager. In March 2015, Nicholas Geyer, formerly Opera Colorado’s part-time marketing and development assistant, transitioned to the full-time digital marketing assistant manager position. His new role, within the marketing department, includes overseeing all aspects of email campaigns, social media and the website, as well as other digital media projects and support of all Opera Colorado departments including education, marketing and development.
