Welcome and thank you for joining us for tonight's performance of AS ONE. Opera has a long history of presenting challenging social and political issues. With great humor, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro reflects the socio-political principles of the French Revolution, while in not-so-subtle ways numerous operas of Verdi were a rallying cry for the unification of Italy. This season, Opera Colorado boldly enters a new era of artistic achievement as we launch a 5-year series of new chamber operas, one each year, that tackle some of the challenging socio-political issues of our time. We are proud to begin the series with As One, an opera that for the past 2 years has received critical acclaim for its extraordinary storytelling and accessible musical language. Laura Kaminsky, Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed have created an extraordinary chamber opera that explores the universal question we all must ask ourselves at least once in our lifetime, ‘Who am I and how do I fit into the world around me?’ As One asks and answers these questions through the eyes of a transgender person as she encounters the emotional challenges and confronts the social stereotypes of her transgender experience. Art and music have a unique way of presenting challenging subject matter in a way that encourages understanding, empathy, healing and acceptance. Next season we will continue our chamber opera initiative with the world premiere of Gerald Cohen and Deborah Brevoort’s Steal A Pencil For Me, a story about the enduring power of love and how imagination of life after the Holocaust inspired the mutual survival of lovers thrust in the middle of the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. I hope that your experience tonight inspires a greater understanding of how we coexist in a diverse and ever-changing world, and how we all must do our best to accept and celebrate the uniqueness we all bring to our community. A NOTE FROM THE CREATORS OF AS ONE When we three set out to write As One, none of us predicted the success it would have. We were well aware of the reality within the industry that many new operas don’t receive second or third productions—for reasons that often have little to do with the quality of the work—and we knew that a new piece about a transgender protagonist might not jibe with some people’s views of opera. But through a confluence of timing, luck, and what we hope is a compelling piece, we now find ourselves in Denver, where Opera Colorado is mounting the eighth production of As One in the two and half years since it was premiered by American Opera Projects at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music. And with many productions of As One scheduled around the country in the near future, Opera America reports that the work is one of the most produced new operas in recent history.
10 A S O N E
We’re the first to admit that one reason for the opera’s number of incarnations is due to its simplest production values: two singers, a string quartet and the most basic of sets to accommodate the projection design. Early on, we envisioned an opera that could be performed in the humblest of circumstances, and we kept those limitations in mind. Of course, this may confound operagoers used to seeing monolithic sets and choruses of peasants, but we also hoped that As One would attract a new audience—people who might seek a simpler, purer synergy of music and text to tell a story. Another reason for the opera’s popularity may be the character of Hannah herself. Fallible, self-deprecating, and admittedly somewhat self-involved, Hannah’s journey is one that audiences can relate to. We eschewed any political agenda in creating her character and instead focused on someone most people can identify with. We also chose to tell her story with a healthy bit of humor. Of course, Hannah does have conflicts, but she is not the tortured soul usually portrayed in stories about trans people. The popularity of As One is very gratifying. Even more gratifying to us is how the opera’s message about human rights is reaching so many people—especially at a time when leadership in this country wants to dehumanize trans people and strip away their rights. We feel honored that a company with the reputation of Opera Colorado would choose to not only produce a new production of our opera, but also to do so with such loving care. L AU R A K A M I N S K Y COMPOSER With “an ear for the new and interesting” (The New York Times) Laura Kaminsky’s “music is full of fire as well as ice, written in an idiom that contrasts dissonance and violence with tonal beauty and meditative reflection. It is strong stuff.” (American Record Guide). Social and political themes are common in her work, as is an abiding respect for and connection to the natural world. As One (co-librettists Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed), debuted in 2014 at BAM and has since become one of the most widely produced contemporary operas. The team’s collaboration continues with Some Light Emerges, commissioned by Houston Grand Opera, and Today It Rains, co-commissioned by San Francisco’s Opera Parallèle and American Opera Projects. Upcoming chamber works include a Piano Quintet for Ursula Oppens and the Cassatt String Quartet, and a Duo for Flute and Piano for the University of Minnesota/Duluth. K I M B E R LY R E E D LIBRETTIST/FILMMAKER Kimberly Reed co-wrote, with Pulitzer-winning librettist Mark Campbell, the libretto for the chamber opera As One. With music by celebrated composer Laura Kaminsky, As One has become the most produced new American opera in the two years since its 2014 premiere. She also created a film for As One, of which the New York Times said: “backed by scene-setting projections from Ms. Reed, the drama powerfully coheres.” San Francisco Chronicle noted the “delicately atmospheric film” and libretto that “conjures up a blend of excitement, shame, self-fulfillment and fear with crisp efficiency.” Ms. Reed wrote the text for the song cycle Fierce Grace: Jeannette Rankin, commissioned by Opera America. Following Houston Grand Opera’s production of Some Light Emerges, the Kaminsky-Campbell-Reed team’s next piece will be Today It Rains, a commission by Opera Parallèle, inspired by the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe. Alongside writers Malcolm Gladwell and Joyce Maynard, Reed’s nonfiction is collected in “The Moth,” an acclaimed and NY Times best-selling compendium of true stories. She has been a fellow at Yaddo Artists Colony, Squaw Valley Writers Workshop, and the Hermitage Artist Retreat Center. As a filmmaker, Prodigal Sons, a “whiplash doc that heralds an exciting talent” (SF Weekly), premiered at Telluride Film Festival, screened at 100+ festivals, garnered 14 awards including the FIPRESCI Prize, and was broadcast worldwide. One of Filmmaker magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film,” she has been featured on CNN, NPR, MSNBC, The Moth Radio Hour, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. www.kimberlyreed.com
