Our passion for opera is the spark of our love story.
We first met at elementary school: a well-behaved little girl, a mischievous little boy, and we secretly became sweethearts. That time in our lives was a source of enduring memories we continue to cherish tenderly. And one of those memories is our discovery of opera.
In fourth grade, a dedicated teacher introduced us to the world of opera. It was an amazing revelation, considering the kind of children we were! La Traviata was our initiation. To prepare us for our field-day trip to the Opéra de Montréal, we listened in class to exhilarating arias sung in Italian and compared their original versions with the French translation transcribed in the libretto. On Friday afternoons, we would become set designers. Characters, furniture, curtains: we carefully staged it all inside cardboard boxes.
As we grew up, life pulled us apart. Many years later, we unexpectedly found ourselves face to face, when—surprise!—we both had tickets to a performance of… La Traviata! That day, the adults we had become reconnected, and we have proudly shared a subscription to the Opéra de Montréal for the past 3 years.
Subscribing to the opera is absolutely about the joy of savouring each performance in-hall, but it’s also about getting to keep our favourite chosen seats! Every year, we eagerly look forward to the next season’s reveal. And it’s a real treat to discover each new and diverse season programming and enjoy the privilege of hearing the artists of the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal perform excerpts, only a few metres away!
Every opera we attend is a fresh source of enjoyment. As soon as the orchestra starts playing, there’s that thrill running through us. At intermission, we enjoy a glass of wine while conversing about what we have just seen and heard. And we applaud the artists exuberantly once the curtain falls on the finale! This special connection between us, forged by our shared passion for opera, and the scope of excitement it brings us year after year make subscribing to the Opéra de Montréal simply a must.

The first play of a comic trilogy (Beaumarchais) that shocked the 18th-century elite is the basis of Rossini’s masterpiece The Barber of Seville. Teeming with action and bursting with unforgettable melodies, this opera is sure to make you break out into laughter. In the whimsical approach of stage director Joan Font and the Spanish troupe Els Comediants, this production cleverly incorporates some circus arts, acrobatics, and pantomime. For the occasion, the Orchestre Métropolitain will reunite with Spanish conductor Pedro Halffter who conducted the OM in Madama Butterfly in 2023.

The youthful Count Almaviva is smitten with the beautiful Rosina, a resourceful young lady jealously shielded by her guardian, Don Bartolo, who secretly plans to marry her. Rosina is charmed by the Count Almaviva’s serenading. The roguish barber Figaro comes to the two young lovers’ aid. A proliferation of schemes and mistaken identities ensues, all of which are as hilarious as they are effective.

Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s iconic play. Through Alain Gauthier’s masterful staging, audiences behold the anguish and tragic spiral of resentment that plague victims of a system in which corruption prevails. The masterful conductor Jacques Lacombe will lead the Orchestre Métropolitain.

Shortly after the tragic death of his father, the King of Denmark, the young prince Hamlet falls into despair compounded by the hasty marriage of his mother, Queen Gertrude, to his uncle Claudius, who thereby takes the throne. The late king’s ghost appears to Hamlet, claiming to have been murdered, and demands vengeance. Thus begins the prince’s downward spiral as he endeavours to juggle duty, loyalty, and personal ambition.

+ LE PHARE JOBIDON/REVABolstered by huge community success at the Théâtre Paradoxe in February 2023, Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, an opera for the whole family, now takes the stage at Théâtre Maisonneuve.
Sylvain Scott stage-directs resident artists of the Atelier lyrique who perform with the Orchestre de l’Agora conducted by none other than Nicolas Ellis. This performance will be preceded by the premiere of Le Phare [The Lighthouse] by Laurence Jobidon and Maria Reva. It relates the story of a lonely lighthouse which, after turning off its beam to attract boats to its rocky base, is faced with unforeseen consequences.

The illustrious filmmaker Baz Luhrmann once said that La Bohème was the greatest love story ever sung. It is certainly a favourite of the repertoire. Staged by François Racine, this production causes us to reflect upon the fragility of love and life. What price do we pay if we try to follow our hearts and fulfill all our dreams? Young Montreal conductor Simon Rivard conducts the Orchestre Métropolitain in his Opéra de Montréal debut.

Opera changed our lives
Every opera offers a new perspective on life and has the ability to transform our lives for the better. The protagonists featured in our season campaigns know this too well. Discover why these exceptional people embody the operas of this coming season.
Mégane & Pascal –
The Barber of Seville
For Mégane and Pascal it was love at first sight. True romantics living the us-against-the-world love stories that we experience in our youth. They represent all the young adults who attend our student rehearsals, cultural mediation workshops, or our other youth initiatives that introduce opera from all angles. It is often during one of these workshops where a spark ignites, where a door opens to who they want to become… and sometimes, even a career choice is born.
Vincent – Hamlet
Since childhood, Vincent has felt disconnected from the real world. The emotions that inhabit him are sometimes so intense that they can take over his whole being. A series of family traumas had pushed Vincent to call for help. The call for help was answered by Dr. Patricia Garel, a child psychiatrist at CHU Ste-Justine, who introduced him to the artistic project Transition Space. The mission of this project is to “overcome traumas, suffering, difficulties, and to build with this suffering,” through art. Mission accomplished. Today, Vincent has overcome many of his challenges, and he is much healthier and happier.
Alma – L’Enfant et les Sortilèges
Little Alma is 5 years old and has a curious and bubbly personality. She attends Mr. Thierry’s kindergarten, an integration class at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges school. Most of the families of Mr. Thierry’s students are from immigrant backgrounds, and in some cases, in precarious situations. Instilling a taste for culture and the arts in students from a young age is a fundamental priority for Mr. Thierry. Through art, he aims to break isolation and foster the personal development of each child.
Molly-May, Dany-Daniel and Emmanuel –La Bohème
Molly-May has chosen the bohemian life. Her life and values do not fit the mold that society imposes on her. She and her friends are multidisciplinary artists: from sewing to puppetry, through drawing and poetry, they live off their art. The Paradox Group, a community and social economy organization that promotes social and professional integration in the performing arts and events field, allows Molly-May to expand her artistic talents and learn the stage arts technique. Today, she works as a set designer and technician for several artistic and event companies!
