MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR
Dear friends, and dear members of our philanthropic community,
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221006194827-74082aaefbac1f68f63f8d6ecd3a85df/v1/9dc24629de73d4d4e81d9b40b8897842.jpeg)
If the Opéra de Montréal has today been able to position itself — more than two years after the pandemic began — as an integral part of Montréal’s cultural landscape, it is due, in no small part, to you.
You are the ones who have helped the next generation of artists reach their full potential, through our Atelier lyrique program.
You are the ones who have helped us extend the benefits of opera far beyond the walls of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, to our schools, our hospitals and our libraries through our civic impact and education programs..
And finally, you are the ones who have fostered the creation of operatic works, right here in Montréal, through our new productions.
Once again, you have shown exceptional generosity and solidarity with us, at a time of significant upheaval for our organization, and for the performing arts in general. Thanks to you, the Opéra de Montréal has been able to weather the storm, continuing to achieve its mission of bringing the Montréal community together around the operatic arts, while also promoting opera from one end of our city to the other, to everyone’s benefit. Thank you!
Like Pamina and Tamino in The Magic Flute, we have had to overcome a great many challenges to step into the light. But we have hit our mark with confidence, knowing that you are behind us. We know that, with you, the Opéra de Montréal will continue to stimulate experiences and emotions that are strong, vibrant and unforgettable. That is our passion. That is our commitment .
Thank you for travelling this road with us, and for continuing to support the unfolding story of the Opéra de Montréal.

“Your support makes the Atelier lyrique shine bright!”
What an intense and emotional year for our 12 artists in residence!
Kirsten, Geoffrey, Vanessa, Sarah, Matthew, Marc-Antoine, Sidney, Rebecca, Christopher, Lucie, Martina, Misha . . . Whether in their first, second or third season with us, all have made extraordinary progress this year.
From the double bill Riders to the Sea/Le Flambeau de la nuit in September 2021 to our much-anticipated presentation of The Magic Flute in May 2022, our professionals-in-training have faced the vagaries of the pandemic with discipline, fortitude, and an admirable ability to adapt. At every turn, they were able to rely upon the unfailing support of our educational staff with our fundamental mission in mind: shaping a new generation of topnotch Canadian operatic talents, right here in Montréal.
It is your support, as our valued donors, that has made the Atelier shine so bright! Thanks to you, we can continue to welcome and train a new contingent of exceptional artists again this year. Thank you for contributing to their development, their success and, ultimately, to our shared delight in both discovering them and hearing them perform!
With gratitude, Chantal Lambert Director of the Atelier lyriqueSINGERS

This year, despite the pandemic, the Atelier lyrique was able to offer its artists-in-residence a number of opportunities to showcase their talent, meet audiences, and put their learning into practice onstage.
You may even have seen them yourself!
RIDERSTOTHE SEA & LE FLAMBEAU DE LANUIT
In collaboration with BOP (Ballet – Opéra – Pantomime) and I Musici de Montréal Presented in September 2021 at Théâtre Maisonneuve
Bringing together established artists with our artists-inresidence, this double bill reflected the Atelier lyrique’s involvement in the creation of new works, and in digital innovation. Performed before a live audience — the first in Canada since the pandemic — the show was also taped and later rebroadcast online. More than 1,900 additional individuals were able to enjoy the performance — surpassing the entire seating capacity of Théâtre Maisonneuve.
THE MIXTAPE
In collaboration with the Orchestre Métropolitain
Presented in November 2021 at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
Under the baton of Jacques Lacombe, this concert for young audiences — which featured some of the “greatest hits” from the repertoire — was presented to a packed house, to the delight of both the artists and audience members who enjoyed being brought together at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier. More than 40% of the audience was under 35.
ENFERS DES LUMIÈRES
In collaboration with the Orchestre de l’Agora
Presented in March 2022 at the Monument-National
This show, performed with staging and costumes before a live audience, gave our resident artists an opportunity to explore the expressive, vocal and theatrical possibilities of a rare French baroque repertoire (Lully, Rameau, Gluck). The show was videotaped for an eventual broadcast online.

An uncut reading at Piano Nobile was followed by a full production at Salle WilfridPelletier / April-May 2022
Despite the lack of an audience — a precaution to prevent an outbreak of COVID — spring for our artists-in-residence was steeped in the strains of The Magic Flute. While one portion of the artists-in-residence actively participated in rehearsals as understudies, each member of the full contingent was given a valuable opportunity to add a classical role to their portfolio, through an uncut reading of Mozart’s masterpiece.
EMERGING ARTISTS CAREERS TAKE FLIGHT
Despite the gloom surrounding cultural activity as a result of COVID, our artists-in-residence have certainly shone during the past twelve months. In addition to the Opéra’s productions and co-productions, they have taken part in a wide range of concerts and events that have thrilled Québec audiences. You can be truly proud of them — and proud of supporting them!

That being the case, the Opéra de Montréal can lay — in reflection of its own high standards, with the support of private individuals and visionary partners like you — an inherently Montréal cornerstone towards the building of opera during the 21st century.

LA BEAUTÉ DU MONDE
This production has certainly played hard to get! Twice postponed due to the pandemic, it has finally been rescheduled for November 2022. Like you, we are burning with desire to see and hear it in full at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier. Don’t forget that it features the work of playwright Michel Marc Bouchard (Les Feluettes) and composer Julien Bilodeau (Another Brick in the Wall - The Opera).
BEING
This operatic adaptation of the masterpiece Being at Home with Claude, by playwright (and librettist) René-Daniel Dubois, brings together an artistic team featuring Blair Thomson (music), Félix-Antoine Boutin (director) and artists-inresidence from the Atelier lyrique. In 2021–2022, the latter also played an active role in helping to develop the project, which will likely debut in 2023.

ENIGMA
Produced in collaboration with the Opéra de Metz (France), this work featuring two tenors, a women’s choir, and an orchestra draws its inspiration from the play Variations énigmatiques by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt. Constructed like a psychological thriller, it will be presented for the first time in France in Fall 2022, and in Montréal during the 2023–2024 season.

A LETTER TO GENERAL FRANCO
This work is inspired by the courageous act of Spanish poet Arrabal, who wrote an open letter to Fascist general Franco while Franco was still in power. In this new production, sculptor Macario is being hunted by the Madrid militia. Taking refuge in an underground shelter, he produces one last work: a cry of rage aimed at the Franco dictatorship. Only his niece Anita knows his hiding place. She discovers the letter to Franco, which the artist has penned with his dying breath. Will she cross the Pyrenees to denounce the regime and free Spain from its oppressors?

At the Opéra de Montréal, we firmly believe that opera, through its power to transform lives, can enrich and improve the quality of life for everyone, whether they are music-lovers or not, no matter their origin, age or social status.
Each of our educational and civic action projects helps to anchor the Opéra de Montréal more firmly within the community. Far beyond the walls of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, these initiatives help make opera more widely known among diverse audiences who otherwise would not have access.
In return, the beneficiaries of these projects — schools, the disabled, ill, people of diverse backgrounds, etc. — help give meaning to our work in their wonder and enthusiasm for the operatic arts, throughout Montréal and across Quebec.
Thank you sincerely for working by our side.

Imagine the expression of a toddler hearing Mozart for the very first time. Imagine children creating a mini-opera at school. Imagine teens forgetting all about their phones during a performance. These are some of our educational achievements in 2021–2022. And each time, you were right there with us!
THE MAGIC FLUTE FOR A PRESCHOOL AUDIENCE
There is no age limit when it comes to appreciating Mozart. Preschool teacher Thierry Prieur, of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges school, invited his young students to produce drawings based on the theme of The Magic Flute. In collaboration with the Opéra de Montréal, their works became a full-scale exhibition in the lobby of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier. A documentary short was also produced about this creative adventure.
LES CARREFOURS D’APPRENTISSAGE (ELEMENTARY SCHOOL)
The Opéra de Montréal is taking the digital plunge when it comes to education! Dubbed “libraries of the 21st century,” carrefours d’apprentissage is a pilot project administered in collaboration with the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM). Through digital and interactive platforms, students discover opera, and even experience it in the form of a mini-opera. A fun and stimulating introduction to opera!
OPEN DRESS REHEARSAL TO TEACH YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT OPERA (SECONDARY SCHOOL)
In a first since the beginning of the pandemic, on Thursday, May 5, 2022, a full dress rehearsal of The Magic Flute was opened up to around 500 students from some 20 schools in Greater Montréal. Young people were moved — literally — loudly cheering the original production by Barrie Kosky. A new generation of opera fans was born that day!
ÉCOLE EN RÉSEAU (ELEMENTARY SCHOOL)
This new partnership will allow the Opéra de Montréal to offer four virtual workshops to 2,000 students across Québec.
LET’S TALK OPERA! (GENERAL AUDIENCE)
Highly appreciated by Montrealers, these musical chats hosted by Pierre Vachon have once again this year drawn crowds of viewers to municipal arts centres. The 75-minute sessions explore current operas, along with topics as varied as women and opera, Italian opera, and French opera.

In 2021–2022, there was a major new development with the broadcast of some of these sessions on the Web and on television via Canal Savoir, making opera even more accessible to a greater number of people.

Some of the Let’s Talk Opera! chats were broadcast on the Web and on television, on the Canal Savoir, making opera even more accessible to as many people as possible.
OPERA FOR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Sometimes, singing is a remedy in and of itself. We have often called upon your generosity to support projects showcasing the therapeutic value of opera. These initiatives are in addition to social action projects that recur year after year.
RESPIRE PROGRAM TO SUPPORT PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM LONG COVID
March to May 2022
Helping people suffering from long COVID to literally catch their breath, the Opéra de Montréal set up a pilot project in collaboration with the Montreal Clinical Research Institute and Dr. Emilia Falcone. The idea was to use operatic singing techniques to support patients’ respiratory rehabilitation. From March to May, 21 people were able to take 12 therapeutic workshops hosted online, free of charge, by mezzo-soprano Charlotte Gagnon.
This project was profiled in a video short for the Conseil des arts de Montréal, showcasing opera as a voice for the most vulnerable.

In collaboration with the CHU Sainte-Justine September 2021, Le Gesù
Back again this year, the project Espace Transition à l’Opéra is now in its 5th season. In December 2021, a group of young adults with mental health issues presented their version of the opera La Beauté du monde to an enthusiastic and visibly moved audience.
The performance was the result of a 13-week creative workshop, made possible with the participation of an artistic team from the Opéra de Montréal and a clinical team from the Sainte-Justine hospital centre. The most recent edition, L’Humain in September 2022, was inspired after The Magic Flute.
The Conseil des arts de Montréal showcased the positive outcomes of this project in a video short featuring LauraMaria, one of the participants in the 2021-2022 season.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND ACCESSIBILITY
LA GANG À RAMBROU
For several years now, the Opéra de Montréal has enjoyed an important partnership with the organization La Gang à Rambrou, which serves intellectually handicapped adults and those on the autism spectrum. The latter are provided with an opportunity to take part in the co-creation of an opera which, led and supervised by opera artists and a team of accompanists, culminates in a public performance with singing, music and staging. This show had to be postponed due to COVID, and will be presented in Fall 2022.
CoOpéra
Combining education, diversity and inclusion, the CoOpéra project has, every year since 2004, brought together 80 students from Grades 5 and 6 to create, produce and perform an opera reflecting their lives. Ninety per cent of participants come from disadvantaged and multicultural environments.

TEACHING FRENCH
This pilot project, administered in collaboration with the Ministère de l’immigration, francisation et intégration, features a mediator who uses the collaborative and creative resources of opera to help immigrants learn the language and culture of their new home. A complete series of 10 workshops will be given in Fall 2022, in person or online.
CONNECTED NORTH
Led by mediators from the Opéra de Montréal, this series of 10 distance-learning workshops is designed to make opera accessible to young Inuit and Indigenous in the country’s most remote communities.
AUDIO DESCRIPTION FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
This project, currently in development, is aimed at improving the opera experience for the visually impaired, by allowing them to follow the story in real time using audio-descriptive devices.
What a joy to join you again, dear opera lovers, for our productions, concerts and donor recognition events!
Even with masks, there is nothing like enjoying firsthand contact with each devoted supporter of opera, and the many enthusiastic partners in our mission.
Although the 2021–2022 season presented its share of public-health challenges, it also allowed us to see the loyalty of our community, which has remained committed and generous during a very difficult time. It also demonstrated to us that your support for our programs goes far beyond the financial aspect alone — it also translates into valuable moral support. For this, we at the Opéra de Montréal are extremely grateful.

Did you know that...
• The philanthropic community for the Opéra de Montréal in 2021–2022 numbered more than 1,100 donors right here in the city, supporting the development and dissemination of opera.
• The support of private citizens, businesses and private foundations contributed more than 25% of the organization’s total financing (complementing box office revenues and public-sector support). The contributions of private individuals makes it possible, among other things, for us to offer programs involving training (the Atelier lyrique), the community (Civic Impact and Education), and the creation of new works.
• The TALENT Gala is the largest fundraising event for opera in Quebec. In November 2021, more than $360,000 was raised in support of various Opéra de Montréal programs.
Welcome to Our New Partners
It is an honour for the Opéra to add two new and outstanding partnerships to its list of institutional donors:
• The Azrieli Foundation, which has provided major financing for the development of the Atelier lyrique to 2024.
• The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, which will now be associated with co-creation projects related to civic impact and education: Espace Transition à l’Opéra, La Gang à Rambrou and CoOpéra.
The Opéra de Montréal is proud to recognize its corporate partners and private foundations for their support of programs relating to the training, creation and accessibility of opera within the community (see full list on page 21).
“Your gift is much more than financial — it also translates into invaluable moral support.”Jean-Pierre Primiani

A Word from the Chairman
The 2021-2022 season will have been my first as Chairman of the Board. And what an extraordinary season! A season marked by the vagaries of the pandemic and two major cancellations, of course, but also and above all, by the excitement and the joy that accompanied the return to the big stage with the presentation of The Magic Flute, last May.
Despite the pandemic, the Opéra de Montréal has stayed on the course of change, growth and community. During the year, the Board and its committees, in collaboration with general management and with the participation of the entire administrative team, continued to advance key issues, including the mid-term evaluation course of the 2019-2023 strategic plan and the organizational reflection on diversity and inclusion.
To all of you, donors, partners and volunteers, a huge thank you for your support of the Opéra de Montréal!
