CHANTAL LAMBERT

To children, both in age and at heart,

We invite you on a journey to the world of Maurice Ravel through some of his most poetic works, which deliver the evocative power of music and the magic of opera at their finest.

Let yourself be transported to the dreamworld of Shéhérazade , three Middleand far-Eastern-inspired mélodies against the backdrop of two excerpts from Le Tombeau de Couperin. This introduction will give way to L’Enfant et les sortilèges (The Bewitched Child), a far-fetched story penned by the French writer Colette, in which an unruly child sees their familiar environment turned completely upside down in an instant. In this story, the conjuring of objects and living beings are devised purely as spells in the child protagonist’s candid imagination and do not imply any ridicule or disrespectful judgment.

It brings me immense joy to see our artists of the Atelier lyrique evolve in such a magnificent playground, at the Théâtre Paradoxe, joined by the fine musicians of the Orchestre de l’Agora

conducted by Nicolas Ellis, in tandem with multidisciplinary artist Sylvain Scott in his capacity as stage director and designer, both of them supported by tremendous creators, collaborators and an outstanding production team.

I am deeply moved to be reconnecting with these works, which I sang early in my career, just as I am about to conclude a cycle as Director of the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal for the past thirty-two years, and to see it continue its formidable advancement. I leave it in good hands with my highly qualified colleagues. I am pleased that the last production under my directorship is one specially dedicated to children, young and old.

I fervently hope that many more of them will take an interest in opera.

Enjoy the show!

SYLVAIN SCOTT

L’Enfant et les sortilèges (The Bewitched Child), we behold the volatile revolt of a child who refuses to submit to authority. A child who wants to break free from the adult world. Who will go so far as to ransack their own personal space out of impulse. With this operatic fantasy, Colette and Ravel hold up a mirror to our own rather unedifying human behaviours. But it doesn’t just stop there: spectators then witness a second revolt, this time of the animals that this child has mistreated. We might think it is a tale of just deserts, but amid all its chaos, the work sheds light on the importance of values of reciprocal care and altruism for living in a world in constant change.

You will also discover, opening this program, Shéhérazade. Three strikingly beautiful narratives that in their own way, are an ode to freedom and to the desire, now and then, to be elsewhere.

Thank you to Chantal Lambert for this wonderful invitation. Thanks also to the performers for their openness in our work together, as well as to the fantastic teams of the Atelier lyrique, the Opéra de Montréal and l’Agora.

Enjoy the performance!

6 MESSAGE FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR

Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges is a fantastical story where a naughty child (L’Enfant) is punished for his bad behaviour when the items in his room come to life to take their revenge. The armchairs (La Bergère and Le Fauteuil) dance together to escape the child, and they take the bench (Le Banc), couch (Le Canapé), stool (Le Pouf), and the wicker chair (La Chaise de Paille) with them. The Grandfather Clock (L’Horologe Comtoise) starts toppling around the room after the child, upset at being made to strike out of time, and the Wedgwood Teapot (La Théière) boxes and dances with the Chinese teacup (La Tasse Chinoise). The fire (Le Feu) jumps out of the grate, the torn shepherds from the wallpaper (Les Pastoures and Les Pâtres) rise from the floor and dance a ballet, and the Princess (La Princesse) from the book the child destroyed appears then leaves him, forever. Even his math book becomes a little old man (Le Petit Vieillard) and the numbers (Les Chiffres) jump about the room, all in the wrong order.

Following the cats outside, the child seeks refuge in the garden, but here the trees (Les Arbres) have come alive, and he is plagued by all the animals he has hurt or captured, and the partners of the animals he has killed. The squirrel (L’Ecureuil) he has kept in a cage warns the tree frog (La Rainette) to stay away in case he might be captured, and asks the child to set him free. The animals and trees finally gang together and attack the child, but when the squirrel is hurt and screams out everything stops. The child bandages the squirrel’s paw and the animals are shocked at his kindness. The child cries out one word ‘Maman’ and the animals echo it until Maman appears at the door, and the child goes back into the house.

7 SYNOPSIS

RAVEL

Maurice Ravel (7 March 1875 – 28 December 1937) was a French composer, pianist and conductor. He is often associated with Impressionism along with his elder contemporary Claude Debussy, although both composers rejected the term. In the 1920s and 1930s Ravel was internationally regarded as France’s greatest living composer. His work, modest in quantity (eighty-six original works, twenty-five orchestrated or transcribed works), is the fruit of varied influences ranging from Couperin and Rameau to the colours and rhythms of jazz, including the recurring influence of Spain.

An Orientalism trend had swept through Western art music at the end of the 19th century. Maurice Ravel responded by writing an opera based on the Thousand and One Nights. He produced the Overture, completed in 1898 and given its public premiere six months later, to a mixed reaction of applause and cat-calls. In 1903, on the same theme and re-purposing some of the music from his Overture, he created a song cycle for soprano (or high-register mezzo-soprano) setting poems by Tristan Klingsor and bearing the title of Shéhérazade

The Agora Orchestra (OA), under the direction of Nicolas Ellis, uses music as a tool for sustainable social change while presenting innovative and daring concerts. Our musicians, young professionals from the Montreal area, are among the best of their generation and actively participate in our social actions through music.

Founded in 2013, the Orchestra’s core values are collaboration, commitment and daring, reflected in the Orchestra’s many initiatives over the years. These include the Gala de la Terre pour les enfants, presented in June 2022, which raised $255,000 in support of environmental and humanitarian causes.

The Orchestra began its partnership with the Montreal Detention Centre in 2021-2022 to present concert-workshops for persons detained in the penitentiary. Since 2013, the Orchestra’s musicians have been offering music lessons and mentoring to hundreds of children from underserved backgrounds in partnership with Share the Warmth.
