A WORD FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR

PATRICK CORRIGAN Dear friends, What an immense pleasure it is to see you again, at last! Though we have waited and waited, the bond that connects us, dear opera lovers, has grown even stronger. This spectacular version of The Magic Flute is the festive production par excellence for reconnecting with our joy-giving and cherished opera practices. I am confident that it will rekindle the flame and be a balm to the spirit of all those who have missed the gift of opera and its artists, here in our concert hall. Over the past two years, through the pandemic’s many and seemingly endless phases, one desire echoed louder than any other: “We cannot wait to get back to opera, we miss opera.” But truly, during all those many long months, it was you we missed. Today, we will be sure to savour every moment! It was this ardour and this desire that guided us in the preparation of our brand-new 2022-23 season. We strove to recreate those special moments that stop time and transport us elsewhere with their astonishing stories, which only opera can render in all their richness, beauty, and emotional intensity. Please consider subscribing to our season during intermission; members of our team will be waiting to help you at designated tables. And don’t hesitate a moment to reach out to them over the next few days. You will see that their passion and enthusiasm for our exceptional upcoming season is infectious! Long live opera!

A WORD FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

MICHEL BEAULAC What a joy it is to finally be back together in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier for this first production since 2020! It’s like getting your voice back after a long bout of laryngitis. This Flute by Kosky has proven to be a true antidote! The team from the Komische Oper Berlin and 1927 have put a new spin on Mozart’s last opera, using a screen-set and extensive, dazzling animation in this production reminiscent of the silent film era. This vision of the opera, by an Australian stage director who claims to have been bored by the traditional versions he had seen as a child, presents Mozart’s final masterpiece as a fairy tale… with a nod to Buster Keaton, Louise Brooks, Nosferatu, and other icons of the early days of cinema. The naïve approach of the characters, the spontaneous associations, the succession of musical elements without spoken dialogue, and the charm of it all remind us, at times, of the light-heartedness of Forman’s Amadeus. This kaleidoscopic Flute has won enthusiastic acclaim everywhere it has been performed across Europe, not to mention in Asia and America. We are very proud to be presenting the Canadian premiere of this version of The Magic Flute. Enjoy the show!

THE MAGIC BUBBLES Le Pive

COMPOSER

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (JANUARY 27, 1756 – DECEMBER 5, 1791) Born in Salzburg, Mozart displayed uncanny musical talent at an early age, composing his first operas while still a boy. However, a suitably prestigious position was to elude him all his life, due partly to his complicated personality. He finally managed to secure a job as a court organist prior to the premiere of Idomeneo, an opera seria considered one of the greatest examples of the genre. Its success led Mozart to take up residence in Vienna, marking the beginning of his maturity as a composer. In 1782, he wrote Die Entfuhrung auf dem Serail, a comic opera that paved the way for the success of Le nozze di Figaro (1786), an unparalleled synthesis of music and drama containing some of the most sublime ensemble writing in all opera. He then explored the dark side of traditional comedy in Don Giovanni (1787), depicting the exploits and eventual punishment of an inveterate womanizer. Così fan tutte (1790), a study of human frailty, features some of Mozart’s most empathetic and realistic characters. His last great opera, Die Zauberflote (1791) hides a message of love, truth, and brotherhood—set to music of profound spirituality and majesty—beneath its simple, fairy-tale plot. In Vienna, Mozart also composed several masterpieces in other genres: piano concerti and sonatas, symphonies, string quartets, a clarinet concerto, the Mass in C minor, and the unfinished Requiem Mass.

ARGUMENT

ACT 1 Chased by a serpent, Prince Tamino finds himself in an unknown land. He faints and is saved by the Queen of Night’s three Ladies. When Tamino comes to, he is approached by the bird-catcher Papageno. The Ladies return to give Tamino a portrait of the Queen of Night’s daughter Pamina, who has been kidnapped by the evil Sarastro. Tamino is instantly smitten and the Queen of Night arrives to secure his promise that he will do everything in his power to rescue Pamina from Sarastro’s stronghold. The Prince is given a magic flute and Papageno a set of magic chimes as protection; the instruments have a way of charming both man and beast. Additionally, three spirits, acting as guardians and advisors, will lead the way. Sarastro’s slave Monostatos pursues Pamina but is frightened away by Papageno, who tells Pamina that he and Tamino have come to rescue her. Meanwhile the three spirits have led Prince Tamino to Sarastro’s Temple. There, he meets a priest who explains to him that it is the Queen of Night who is evil, not Sarastro. Heartened by the news that Pamina is alive, Tamino begins playing his flute; it reveals its magical properties by bringing the forest to life. Pamina and Papageno hear Tamino’s flute and hasten to find him. But they are intercepted and detained by Monostatos. Papageno’s chimes come to their aid, allowing the bird-catcher and Pamina to escape. Pamina and Tamino see one another for the first time, and fall into a passionate embrace.

10

ACT 11 Sarastro sees Tamino as a future leader of his people, who are in the midst of a grave crisis. But in order to prove himself worthy of the role, and of Pamina, Tamino must first undergo several rigorous trials. Papageno does not share Tamino’s audacity and is only prepared to accompany him after the promise of a wife as his reward. The Queen of Night’s Ladies arrive and try to seduce the two men into abandoning their allegiance to Sarastro, but Tamino and Papageno hold their nerve and pass their first ordeal. Monostatos tries to kiss the sleeping Pamina, but is frustrated by the entrance of the Queen of Night. Set on revenge, she charges Pamina with the task of murdering Sarastro. Torn by her devotion to her mother and her love for Tamino, Pamina is at a loss. Sarastro enters, reassuring Pamina that he is not out for vengeance, but strives for understanding and forgiveness. The second ordeal has begun for Tamino and Papageno: a vow of silence. Papageno heartily ignores this, chattering cheerfully with his companion. Pamina finds them, but believes herself betrayed when Tamino refuses to speak to her. Her happiness dashed, she leaves in despair, but Tamino passes the second test. Papageno, on the other hand, is at his wits’ end. He encounters an old woman who, once he has sworn lifelong fidelity to her, reveals herself as a young girl named Papagena. But as he has disobeyed the vow of silence, she is driven away from him. Papageno’s life now seems futile. Beside herself with grief, Pamina contemplates suicide, but the three spirits intervene, bringing her and Tamino together for the final trials. Protected by the magic flute, Tamino and Pamina successfully undergo fire and water ordeals. The three spirits also manage to prevent Papageno from killing himself, and the bird-catcher is reunited with his Papagena for good. The Queen of Night and her Ladies, led by Monostatos, once again try to storm the Temple, but the intruders are caught unawares by Sarastro and cast out by the light of the rising sun. As dawn breaks, Tamino and Pamina are hailed for enduring all the ordeals with beauty and wisdom.

EDITORIAL

BEHIND THE SCENE BY VANESSA CROOME, soprano in residence at the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal Field Notes— A month ago, if you had told me that I would be stepping in to sing the Queen of the Night in most of The Magic Flute rehearsals for the Opéra de Montréal, I would probably have reacted in disbelief, laughed, and then gone home and had a nervous breakdown. Why? Well, in addition to being one of the most challenging roles of the entire soprano repertoire, the Queen in this production delivers her scenes strapped to a wall and standing on a tiny platform, 15 feet in the air. Add the public health and safety requirement for face coverings during rehearsals (COVID-19 oblige), and you have nothing less than a terrifying proposition. Singing a difficult coloratura score with insane high notes, strapped to a huge wall with a COVID mask on in front of your peers and industry experts? Sounds like a bad stress dream, to be perfectly honest. As it turns out, it was exactly the opposite. Getting the chance to cover the Queen of the Night in this production of The Magic Flute has been one of the most important, most exciting experiences in my training with the Atelier lyrique. In the end, it was a very good dream come true.

24

When you’re covering a role in an opera production, you must prepare as if you were contracted to sing the actual role. You are the singing insurance policy for the show—if anything goes wrong, you’ll be the one to step in at the last minute. This means subbing for rehearsals or performances when a principal artist can’t be there. Of course, in an ideal situation, cover singers are not required for the main production, but in this pandemic world, it has never been more important to have “Plan B” ready to roll out. In addition, the requirements of this particular production of The Magic Flute pose unique challenges, as singers must learn to perform My colleague Florence Bourget [Third Lady] while being strapped to a wall with testing out her harness on the first day of harnesses. rehearsal. Look at that wall!!

The Queen’s second aria, “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen” [“Hell’s Vengeance Boils in My Heart”]: A pleasant mother/daughter bonding moment between the Queen and her daughter Pamina!

As a young singer, I heard the Queen’s famous aria “Der Hölle Rache” innumerable times: it is so famous that even non-opera fans will recognize it. Because of the character’s infamy and the opera’s narrative content, there is a great deal of pressure singing the Queen of the Night. Everyone anticipates hearing that famous aria, everyone has a certain way they expect to hear it sung, and I was uncertain that I would be able to fulfill those expectations. Thanks to my amazing voice teacher Ariane Girard and coach Esther Gonthier, I discovered otherwise. With an injection of confidence, a good strategy for high notes, and (many) deep breaths, I figured it out, and the role has become one of my favourites. In fact, I am sad that the rehearsal process is over. Surprisingly, singing strapped to a wall is really great fun and I’m actually going to miss it. And every time that trapdoor spun around, I felt like a Cirque du Soleil artist! J’adore. Working on this role has not only opened doors for me as a singer, but has also given me newfound confidence in life. While I was stepping in to cover these rehearsals, I was simultaneously completing a business degree and preparing to perform as a team lead in a pitch competition with a Montreal marketing agency (#sidehustle). I had never competed in a non-singing competition and was certainly very nervous about it. But I can assure you that when your day job features being strapped to a wall while singing high F’s, other challenges suddenly seem less intimidating. Because of this opportunity, I learned that sometimes you just need that little push outside of your comfort zone to discover what you are truly capable of achieving. (Oh, and that marketing pitch competition? My team won!) Thank you, Queenie! I can’t wait to bring you back to life again, sometime soon…

OPERA

Il Trovatore de Verdi Can we run away from the consequences of our actions, or will they haunt us for all eternity? Oscillating between fantasy and reality in a play of shadow and light, this new production of Il Trovatore featuring a stunning cast, including Etienne Dupuis, Nicole Car and Marie-Nicole Lemieux, proves that revenge comes at a heavy price.
