Experience the magic of the Opera

BMO is excited to present magical moments of the Montreal Opera. Prepare to be enchanted by captivating stories and incredible vocal performances.

Dear public,

PATRICK CORRIGAN

Opera exists because of its audience. It is you, therefore, who come forward to attend our performances, who make all the difference for our artists and artisans. We are truly moved to see that there are more subscriptions today than there were before the pandemic. This bears witness to your great affection for our art form. I am well aware of the dedication and passion all our various teams have shown to make this happen and get us here.

A WORD FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR

Lastly, I want to take this opportunity to share the great pride we are all feeling at the Opéra de Montréal, as our brilliant artistic director, Michel Beaulac, has been appointed to the Order of Canada. He has received this honour in recognition of his great contribution to opera in Canada, and particularly to the Opéra de Montréal, where he has served for over 30 years. On behalf of the entire company, I would like to heartily congratulate him.

What a joy it is to have you join us for an all-new and exciting season at the Opéra de Montréal! Opening this magnificent season—the first complete season in far too long a time—, we are presenting a spectacular new production of Il Trovatore, by Verdi.

A big season awaits you at the Opéra de Montréal, with several occasions to celebrate our art form and our local artists. There’s still time to subscribe if you have not already done so—it’s an advantageous option that allows you to fully enjoy all that opera has to offer. I’d like to add that a new show will be presented in February, at Théâtre Paradoxe. L’enfant et les sortilèges is a collaboration between the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal and the Orchestre de l’Agora.

A highly anticipated return to make us forget the unforeseen events of times past.

The day has come at last!

In the palace gardens, Leonora confides in her companion Ines that she is in love with a mysterious man she met before the outbreak of the war, and that he is the troubadour who serenades her each night. After they have left, Count di Luna appears, looking for Leonora. When she hears the troubadour’s song in the darkness, Leonora rushes out to greet her beloved but mistakenly embraces di Luna. The troubadour reveals his true identity: He is Manrico, leader of the partisan rebel forces. Furious, the count challenges him to fight to the death.

SYNOPSIS

Spain, early 19th century, during the Peninsular War. The commander of the Royalist Aragon troops, Count di Luna, is obsessed with Leonora, a young noblewoman in the queen’s service, who does not return his love. Outside the royal residence, his soldiers keep watch at night. They have heard an unknown troubadour serenading Leonora, and the jealous count is determined to capture and punish him. To keep his troops awake, the captain, Ferrando, recounts the terrible story of a gypsy woman who was burned at the stake years ago for bewitching the count’s infant brother. The gypsy’s daughter then took revenge by kidnapping the boy and throwing him into the flames where her mother had died. The charred skeleton of a baby was discovered there, and di Luna’s father died of grief soon after. The gypsy’s daughter disappeared without a trace, but di Luna has sworn to find her.

During the duel, Manrico overpowered the count, but some instinct stopped him from killing his rival. The war has raged on, with the Royalist forces victorious in the most recent battle. Manrico was badly wounded, but his mother, the gypsy Azucena, has nursed him back to health in a camp in the mountains.

ACT II

A band of gypsies gathers at their mountain hideout. Azucena is the woman for whom di Luna has been searching. Her life is scarred by the memory of her mother’s death and the terrible revenge she exacted. Manrico, who has never heard the full story, is determined to finally know the truth. Azucena tells him how she stole the older count’s infant son but, in her manic rage, accidentally murdered her own child instead. When Manrico demands to know who he truly is, Azucena is evasive: All that matters is the mother’s love she has shown him all his life and that he does not fail to take revenge on the house of di Luna. A messenger arrives with news that Leonora, believing that Manrico has fallen in battle and hoping to escape di Luna’s grasp, is entering a convent. Azucena pleads with Manrico to stay, but he resolves to go to her immediately.

Di Luna arrives at the convent with his troops to take Leonora by force, but his attempt to seize her is foiled when Manrico and his men attack. In the ensuing chaos, the lovers escape.

8

ACT I

Di Luna has laid siege to the fortress where Manrico has taken refuge with Leonora. Soon, soldiers bring in Azucena, whom Ferrando and his men have captured wandering nearby. When she hears di Luna’s name, her reaction arouses suspicion, and Ferrando recognizes her as the murderer of the count’s brother. Azucena cries out to Manrico to rescue her, and di Luna realizes that he now has his enemy in his hands. He orders a pyre built for Azucena before the walls of the fortress.

ACT IV

SYNOPSIS

Manrico’s army has been defeated, and he and Azucena are being held captive in di Luna’s castle. Leonora has escaped and now comes to the prison to pray for Manrico’s salvation. When di Luna orders the execution of Manrico and Azucena at sunrise, Leonora offers herself to the count in return for her lover’s life; however, she secretly takes a slow-acting poison, sealing her fate.

In their cell, Manrico tries to comfort Azucena, who is terrified of the stake and the fire that await her. Leonora appears to tell Manrico that he is saved and urges him to escape. Understanding that she has promised herself to di Luna, he denounces her and refuses to flee. But the poison is already taking effect, and Leonora dies in his arms, just as di Luna arrives. He sends Manrico to his execution. Azucena cries out that her mother is avenged: di Luna has killed his own brother.

Inside the castle, Manrico and Leonora are preparing to be married. She is frightened, but he assures her of his love even in the face of death. When news of Azucena’s capture arrives, Manrico summons his forces and prepares to attack.

GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813-1901)

THE

(1813-1901) was born in Roncole. He began his musical education with the village organist, went on to study with the maestro di musica in Busseto, and completed his training in Milan with Lavigna, the répétiteur at La Scala, who encouraged him to attend opera performances. He presented his first opera, Oberto, in 1839, its success leading to a commission to write three more, including Nabucco (1842). During his following “galley years,” he composed an opera every nine months or so, culminating in the “popular trilogy” of Rigoletto (1851), Il Trovatore (1853), and La traviata (1853), attesting to his stylistic maturity and making him the most popular opera composer in Italy. After a few years in Paris, he tried his hand at grand opera with Les vêpres siciliennes (1855), followed by six other operas, including Aida (1871). He would not return to opera until Otello (1887) and, finally, Falstaff (1893).

What has the return “home” been like for this couple with a deeply rooted sense of family? We spoke to the two infinitely talented, accessible, and genuine artists, whose tangible and refreshing affinity for each other transcends the stage.

TEXT: VéroniquePHOTOS:Gauthier Tam Photography

Opera’s favourite duo is back on the boards at the Opéra de Montréal to delight our ears and eyes in performances of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. For this production, baritone Etienne Dupuis and soprano Nicole Car are both making role debuts alongside a dazzling, almost entirely Canadian cast.

UNE ŒUVRE QUI TOMBE À POINT

Etienne Dupuis and Nicole Car:

“I had sung the arias from Il Trovatore when I was younger, I even won a competition with Leonora’s second aria. Who would think they could manage that at the age of 21? Me, apparently!” says the soprano with a laugh. “I knew it would perfectly suit my voice at this moment. The bel canto from this point

reconnecting with family at the Opéra de Montréal

When artistic director Michel Beaulac approached the couple to ask which opera they would like to come sing in Montreal, Nicole Car did not have to think twice. With a track record of strong and demanding roles, the Australian soprano dreamt of diving into the score for Leonora, the central character in this opera by a young Verdi.

Luckily for us, the experience did not put a halt to his operatic ambitions, and now here he is, ready to prove his first impression of Il Trovatore was wrong!

A CLASSIC: STILL RELEVANT?

Her spouse goes further: “Sopranos with a warm and meaty middle register, with vocal agility, and who can act—there aren’t many of those! It’s an excellent gateway to another category of roles for her.” For his part, though the baritone was at first rather hesitant to don the clothes of Count di Luna, it didn’t take much to convince him. “I told him that if the baritone was good, he’d win the evening. And he accepted!” his wife affectionately teases.

The Paris-based singers made their way to Montreal as a family, in fact, accompanied by their young Noah, for one of the final times this season. “Unlike what we’ve done in previous years, because of school, we decided that one of us would stay home while the other is away for a contract. That way, we can both take advantage of our careers and family, which is very important to

is absolutely incredible. It allows me to stay in the middle register, while having coloratura embellishments. At 36 years old, with the technique I have now, I feel that I’m ready to sing the role.”

A role debut is always an exciting experience, even after many years in the profession. Taking on a role on familiar ground, among kind and gracious colleagues, is a truly happy moment. “I consider myself a Canadian by adoption,” says Nicole. “We’re with family here, with the cast, Jacques Lacombe conducting, Michel-Maxime directing, the whole team. It takes off a lot of pressure and it’s nothing but joy!” Etienne adds, “I grew up with this company. I recognize the room, I know the audience, and I love it here.”

Il Trovatore is the first opera Etienne Dupuis ever saw and, to say the least, his memory of it is not exactly the fondest. “At the time, I was 17 years old, I was studying jazz piano and wondering whether I should make the leap to classical singing. I came to the Opéra de Montréal to get a look at what it was all about, and I found it to be so boring! The cardboard set, singers planting themselves in front of it to deliver their arias… Leonora was dull, and I couldn’t understand why she would kill herself for this man.”

FOR YOUR EVENING AT THE OPERA

All that’s left to do is take your seat, watch the curtain go up, and let the magic happen, masterfully guided along by these two exceptional artists.

To enjoy your evening to the fullest, the baritone suggests you do a little research before coming to the venue. “Read about the story, go online and listen to excerpts of the opera. It’s so nice to recognize arias you’re already familiar with!”

Understanding our reality by revisiting the classics

For the baritone, seeing a classic can open your eyes to our current reality. “Do we really do things differently today than we did back then?” wonders Etienne Dupuis. “Don’t we insult people we don’t know on social media just because they don’t share our opinion? Sometimes, you need to show that though the wheel keeps turning, we haven’t

“It’scharacters.important to keep in mind everything your characters are going through over the course of their journey in the opera,” explains the baritone. “There’s got to be a thread running through their development, otherwise it’s just superficial arias. And Nicole is a very instinctive actress, her acting is very natural. When she comes on stage, you see the character right away. Without it being highlighted or artificial in any way.”

present the work on stage, has his opinion of it changed? “I think a lot depends on how it is presented. It’s a very complicated story, and if part of the plot is left by the wayside in its interpretation, it’s uninteresting,” he replies. LA BEAUTÉ DU MONDE

SalleVictoriaWilfrid-PelletierHall

After a successful premiere of the deeply moving opera Les Feluettes in 2016, Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard is back at the Opéra de Montréal with an original libretto about the epic rescue of artwork from the Louvre. This time, he teams up with composer Julien Bilodeau. A proof of the inestimable value of art and beauty.
