EMBRACING COMMUNITY

22/23 IMPACT REPORT

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR

OPERA UNITES AND INSPIRES

As a cherished supporter of opera, you play a vital role in nurturing a sense of community and belonging through this magnificent art form. Opera transcends time and place, captivating individuals from diverse backgrounds, and it’s your dedication that keeps this vibrant community thriving.

This season, we sent out our first donor survey. Among many valuable insights, we learned how you were introduced to the world of opera.

We discovered a rich tapestry of narratives – from students who seized the opportunity of standing-room tickets while abroad to individuals whose family legacies resonate with the stirring echoes of operatic arias. There are cherished memories of Saturday morning baking rituals with the Met Matinee Broadcast serving as the backdrop, as well as indelible recollections of those unforgettable first visits to the Opéra de Montréal.

Throughout the season, your steadfast support has enabled us to add new chapters to the story of opera. Your patronage has been a source of inspiration and resilience for our dedicated artists as they waited for over two years to grace the stage once again. Our audience, comprised of seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers alike, has experienced the enchantment of opera in ways that stir the soul, leaving them with a profound appreciation for the transcendent power of live music and the timeless relevance of the stories we’ve chosen to share.

Through your generosity and unwavering commitment, you have been a driving force behind the narratives we weave. Together, we come together as a close-knit community to extend our arms warmly to those who may discover their passion for opera through the impact of your support.

I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. As you peruse this report, please take a moment to reflect on your profound influence on the future of opera here in Montréal. Your deep love for this art form fuels our enduring journey together. We celebrate your involvement this season and acknowledge the lasting impact of our shared mission.

OPERA CREATION

What an incredible season! This year, we have once again done everything we could to give audiences a wide variety of artists, stories, and perspectives. From major operas such as Madama Butterfly and Il Trovatore to contemporary works such as Aindamar and La beauté du monde, we proudly offer our community rich and diverse programming. YOU help us achieve great things!

THE JOURNEY TO LA BEAUTÉ DU MONDE

What an adventure La beauté du monde has been! Last November, the Bilodeau-Bouchard collaboration finally won over the Montréal public. I’d like to thank you all for being with us every step of the way, enabling us to invest in the talent of our local artists.

This long journey began following the great success of the opera Les Feluettes in 2016, and the firm desire to work again with playwright Michel Marc Bouchard. This was made possible by his meeting with composer Julien Bilodeau, who, measure by measure and with genius, told us in music the wonderful story of Jacques Jaujard his key role in the rescue of the works at the Louvre during the Second World War.

Despite the postponements and shuffles imposed by the pandemic closures, our team stayed the course. In autumn 2022, we presented the first part of the Bilodeau-Bouchard collaboration, which will be completed this season with the presentation of La Reine-garçon.

What we’ll remember most of all from this journey is the immense pride we take in having brought a new work to life, and the fervent wish that this “beauty of the world” plays in other cities, for other audiences. I am deeply convinced that our creations carry essential, contemporary messages, and that they make a significant contribution to the musical history of Quebec and the world.

Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you, who unfailingly support these projects, which are as vital as they are daring. You are the fundamental support that enables our institution to grow and proudly advance into the 21st century.

See you in February 2024 for the next world premiere. In La Reine-garçon, you will meet an exceptional and inspiring woman who will renounce her crown to preserve her free will.

Long live opera!

LA REINE-GARÇON

February 3–11, 2024

Following the major success of the operas Les Feluettes (2016) and La beauté du monde (2022), Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard is back with his libretto for La Reine-garçon, an adaptation of the stage play Christine, la reine-garçon With music by Julien Bilodeau and staging by Angela Konrad (Yourcenar, une île de passions, 2022), you will hear great Canadian voices, including Joyce El-Khoury and Étienne Dupuis.

April 7—23, 2024

Produced in collaboration with the Opéra de Metz (France), this work for two tenors, a women’s choir and an orchestra was inspired by the play Enigma Variations by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt. Two Atelier lyrique graduates — Antoine Bélanger and Jean-Michel Richer — will perform the leading roles in this production, which was originally presented in France in 2022.

14 TOMORROW’S OPERA STARS 22/23 IMPACT REPORT
Chantal Lambert and Jennifer Szeto

Wednesday, June 28, end of day. In the Opéra’s offices, the emotion is palpable. Atelier lyrique artists, teachers, management, employees — there isn’t a dry eye in the house as Chantal Lambert boxes up her personal belongings. Scores above all. Hundreds of scores.

Excitement and pride

For the woman who had directed the Atelier for more than 30 years, the time for retirement had come. Although she had been working on the transition for months — and although she has a thousand and one projects in her head — leaving these places, which she loved so much, is not easy.

“I’ve spent my entire professional life here, and I will definitely go through a grieving process. But I’m leaving with joy in my heart because, with the management of the Opéra and its generous philanthropists, we have succeeded in creating a training program that is at once unique and very human in scope. The Atelier lyrique in Montréal has become the place to go, attracting artists from major universities across North America.”

During the many poignant goodbyes, one interaction lasted a bit longer than the others: the one with brand-new director Jennifer Szeto, like an official passing of the torch between two authentic and committed women. Their bond was clear, and with good reason: the two musicians know one another well. In addition to being a former Atelier student, Jennifer has also often been a coach.

A seamless transition

To begin mastering the various aspects of her new role, the young director joined the Atelier team in March. “I have been fortunate in arriving at a time when everything is going swimmingly. We have expert coaches and a warm and healthy work environment. Chantal leaves an amazing legacy, and my first mission is to care for that legacy.”

A pianist by training, Jennifer Szeto is no novice when it comes to management. For five years, she managed the production company Musique 3 Femmes, which provides women with greater opportunities in the opera world. For this first-generation immigrant, who came to Canada from Hong Kong at the age of five, equity and diversity are the drivers of creativity. Those values will certainly underscore her priorities regarding the future — a magnificent future — of the Atelier lyrique.

We add our voices to yours as we welcome Jennifer and wish her the best of luck in her new role.

A YEAR OF GREAT TRAINING

The reputation of the Atelier lyrique has continued to grow since it was launched in 1984, thanks to the quality of our coaches and educational activities. Below, Atelier artists describe the direct impact of your funding on their professional development this season.

‘‘The recording of demos at Domaine Forget de Charlevoix was an extraordinary experience for me, both personally and musically. The space and its acoustics were incredible, but what was most special to me was being able to spend quality time with my colleagues and the team. I also feel that the times when we return to our roots bring out the very best in us during the recording sessions. It also goes without saying that the riverfront site itself added to this wonderful experience.’’

Lucie St-Martin Soprano

“The core Atelier team — Ariane, Esther and Holly — provided outstanding training throughout the year. Within a few months, my vocal skills had evolved considerably, as did my confidence and my artistic identity, thanks to the ongoing care and attention of the team.”

Conductor and collaborative pianist

Mikelis Rogers

Baritone

“The high point of my training was working with our mental performance coach, Sieger Roorda. In our craft, we spend a lot of time concentrating on the physical aspects. However, just like athletes, half of the battle is played out in our heads. Sieger is very encouraging, and his work had an enormous impact on the quality of my performances.”

Sydney Frodsham

Contralto

“I adored working with director Aria Umezawa. She brought such a new perspective to opera, and her master classes were fun. Teiya Kasahara was another favourite guest, who led us in a discussion on how to make opera ethical today. This course gave me a different perspective on this art form, and my place within it.”

THE ATELIER LYRIQUE BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE!

The 22/23 season gave our artists in residence an opportunity to fully embrace their stage experiences, while also putting to work everything they had learned. Here, in their own words, are some of their favourite onstage moments.

Angelo Moretti

Tenor

“My favourite onstage experience was playing the role of Ruiz in Il Trovatore, alongside Étienne Dupuis, Nicole Car, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Luc Robert. It was such a surreal experience to be performing alongside actual professionals. Bowing to the audience with them at the very end was a dream come true.”

Emma Fekete

Soprano

“In terms of stage experience, the Emily concert at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur allowed me to shine while taking part in a new project. In addition, I was the understudy for Nuria in Ainadamar, and the director offered me extra understudy sessions. I was thus able to learn a lot during rehearsals without being onstage.”

18 TOMORROW’S OPERA STARS 22/23 IMPACT REPORT

Karoline Podolak

Soprano

“The entire L’enfant et les sortilèges project was an outstanding experience for me this year. I loved the process involved in putting on the show, as well as working with conductor Nicolas Ellis, Sylvain Scott, and all the singers. I was also very happy to have been able to do four performances of this production and to have had an opportunity to be professionally recorded.”

Mishael Eusebio

Tenor

“Thanks to my singing courses with Ariane, and my coaching sessions with Esther, I rediscovered my voice and my artistic talent. I am also grateful to have been able to proudly express my Filipino origins to the public during the final concert.”

TRAINING WITH A HUMAN TOUCH

Beyond providing coaching and stage experience, the Atelier lyrique maintains a very human focus, with bonds that strengthen day after day. Your support gives these young artists an ideal environment in which to reach their full potential. Thank you!

Rebecca Klassen-Wiebe

“The evolution of my journey at the Atelier lyrique, as both a pianist and at the mental level, has been priceless. I also greatly appreciated the contacts with donors and being able to take part in many concerts at the vocal arts café.”

“It is extraordinary to be able to learn each day and grow as an artist while also being able to do so within the unparalleled environment of a major opera company.”

Marc-Antoine Brûlé

Tenor

“The entire Atelier lyrique team this year was like a big family. Whether it was the singers, or Ariane Girard, Chantal Lambert, or Esther Gonthier, there was wonderful chemistry between us all.”

Martina Myskohlid

Mezzo-soprano

“Within a competitive industry like ours, a place like the Atelier lyrique — where camaraderie reigns, where you are supported, and where you are part of a large family — is rare. All the artists who take part in the program are of course excellent singers, but also good people. And it’s a privilege to be able to work with such great individuals every day. We are so lucky to be here!”

MAKE WAY FOR THE LITTLE STARS OF coOpéra

Since 2004, coOpéra has given 100 fifth and sixth graders from four schools within the Montréal School Service Centre the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable personal, artistic, and cultural experience.

In May 2023, a new cohort of 90 students had an amazing opportunity to bring down the house at the Monument-National when they performed their production of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. With the help of a team of dedicated facilitators, the children rewrote the libretto, built sets and props, sang and danced.

And what better way than their own words to describe the extraordinary impact of this project on their lives? YOU made this possible!

“With the coOpéra project, I really liked getting to know friends from other schools. It’s a bit hard for me to be outgoing but, thanks to this project, I was able to do it, and I learned that I have that ability.”

Marcos, École de la Petite-Bourgogne

“My best memory: the final show. I loved this experience so much that I cried a little when I realized it was over. I would really like to do theatre again!”

Ekhamashish, École Jeanne-LeBer

“It was a great experience, and I really liked our coaches. Because the date of the show was set, we had to keep going. I had to learn 94 lines. I worked really hard. It gave me lots of confidence to do three shows in front of 800 people. I would love to have another experience like this!”

Roch, École Jeanne-LeBer

“For some of my students, the coOpéra project was literally their only reason to come to school. I have many students with significant difficulties, and successes are rare at the academic level. This project allowed them to feel valued, and to experience great things. Because of disadvantage at school, they don’t really have opportunities for such extraordinary experiences.”

HEALTH AND INCLUSION FOR ALL

Since 2019, the Opéra de Montréal has supported the health and wellbeing of groups and individuals by sharing the many benefits of the operatic arts. This year included a new partnership with the Music and Health Institute (University of Ottawa) — a collaboration that makes it possible for us to measure the impact of our projects.

“The opera wanted to add a research component and was looking for more solid and more continuous data. Some research had been done in the past, but they sought to partner with us in order to ensure specific evaluation of their projects. I was particularly impressed by the number of projects put in place by the Opéra de Montréal over the past 15 years or so.”

HELPING VOICES AND IDENTITY ALIGN: LA VOIX HARMONISÉE

In a similar vein to the RESPIRER (BREATHE) program — which provides workshops to help improve the breathing of people who suffered from COVID-19 and developed breathlessness and anxiety — this year, the Opéra de Montréal developed La voix harmonisée.

Created by Cédric Maguin, member of the Association québécoise des orthophonistes et audiologistes, and Charlotte Gagnon, mezzo-soprano and Manager, Social Impact and Education, this program uses the vocal techniques of opera singers to help transgender women balance their voices, and thus fully express their feminine identity.

“I was thrilled with the workshops, with Charlotte, and with everyone who took part in this project. We were truly a wonderful group, all with the same goals. We laid our souls bare and threw ourselves into the deep end together. It was very liberating and allowed us to learn to accept ourselves. Bravo to the Opéra de Montréal for this initiative. I would recommend it any day!”

PROJECTS

IN ALL FOUR CORNERS OF THE PROVINCE

For some time now, the Opéra de Montréal has developed a range of virtual tools to introduce as many people as possible to the magic of opera. This year, 8,501 young people were able to participate thanks in part to our partners: École en réseau, BAnQ (Cabane à culture) and the CSSDM (Carrefours d’apprentissage).

WONDERFUL RECOGNITION FOR LA GANG À RAMBROU

A favourite partner of the Opéra de Montréal for several years, La Gang à Rambrou allows adults with intellectual disabilities, or those with autism spectrum disorders, to co-create a show with facilitators and professional artists. This year, the project earned wonderful recognition: the jury of the Conseil québécois du loisir recognized the outstanding quality of the project, naming it a “Favourite” within the category of Networking Awards — Recreational Partnerships and Collaborations.

Bravo to the entire team!

PHILANTHROPY

THANK YOU!

As the curtain falls on another remarkable season, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you, dear donors. Looking back on all the moments we’ve shared, from the spectacular shows to the enchanting concerts and donor events, I am amazed and grateful for your generosity and engagement.

This year, we successfully completed our first-ever donor survey, a development that will now become an annual tradition. Your invaluable feedback will guide us and allow us to enhance your experience, improve our programs and services, and ultimately, better serve you.

Another highlight was the debut of a new fundraising event, OPERASTAR , which took place in August. It was an extraordinary afternoon of pure delight and inspiration, and its success speaks to the strong sense of community resonating around our company.

In addition to these milestones, we’ve expanded our sponsorship programs. Previously only available to donors supporting young artists at the Atelier lyrique, these new sponsorships allow individual donors to connect their contributions to our season artists or invest in the future of arts education and community projects.

Thank you for coming together to champion our artists and bolster our outreach and education endeavours. As we look forward to the seasons ahead, we continually strive to elevate our standards, find ways to keep you coming back for more, and encourage philanthropic support to add value to the community. Your involvement and enthusiasm inspire us and continue to give us hope for the future of opera.

With deepest appreciation,

GOVERNANCE

It is a great pleasure to be continuing my mandate as President of the Board of Directors for a third year, and I would like to express my pride and admiration for the entire Opéra de Montréal team.

The 2022–2023 season brought us audiences that were both numerous and happy to connect with the artists on stage. Despite the difficult years we have just been through, we are happy to note that ticket sales have soared to new heights. I was also delighted by the extraordinarily innovative contemporary works presented this season. From Ainadamar to La beauté du monde, hats off to the Opéra de Montréal for their outstanding creativity!

With renewed enthusiasm, we will continue to nurture the growth that began last year and will continue to work on new initiatives and projects. Whether that involves the development of a new brand image, or organization-wide reflection on equity, diversity, and inclusion, I am convinced that the work underway is the is just the beginning of many great things to come!

Thanks to all of you — donors, partners, and volunteers — for your invaluable support of our opera company.
