MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY MASTERS
2
Preface Opera Gallery Singapore is delighted to present our 2018 Masters exhibition, featuring a selection of works by esteemed Modern and Contemporary Masters. The exhibition highlights the extraordinary artistic innovations that have defined the history of art, presenting works by early pioneers of Modernism such as Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Claude Monet, and Henri Matisse, Post-war artists Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann, and contemporary masters Fernando Botero and Manolo Valdés. The early 20th century saw the emergence of an artistic avant-garde that responded to the rapidly industrialising modern world. These artists revolted against tradition, experimenting with new ways to approach the canvas, giving rise to a plethora of movements including Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Among these visionaries was Marc Chagall. Drawing his inspiration from Russian folklore, Jewish artistic tradition, and his childhood memories of Vitebsk, Chagall’s breadth of work spans virtually every artistic medium including painting, stained glass, etching, illustration, and ceramics. By the mid-20th century, mass marketing and popular culture had begun to dominate larger society. Eschewing the elitism of the art world, Pop artists investigated consumer culture, advertising, and mass production. Known widely as the ‘Pope of Pop’, Andy Warhol was among the first to propel images of celebrity culture and everyday objects into the rarefied domain of fine art. Tom Wesselmann, a contemporary no less influential, revitalised New York’s art scene in the 1960s with his bold works that stylised the female body, isolating and emphasising certain features such as red lips or erogenous zones. Moving into the present, the exhibition will also feature paintings and sculptures by Fernando Botero, Colombia’s most famous living artist. Recognised throughout the world for his distinct style of rotund, voluptuous figures, works by the artist can be enjoyed in almost every major city, testifying to the truly international appeal of his work. Unique in their plenitude and abundance, Botero explores volume and sensuality in subjects as diverse as still life, nudes, Latin American street scenes, and portraits of political figures. It is our great pleasure to host such an outstanding collection in the Singapore gallery, presenting museum quality works from distinguished masters of the past, as well as a selection of stunning contemporary pieces.
