Foreword
Cela fait maintenant plus de deux décennies que Julian Opie compte comme figure proéminente de la scène artistique contemporaine britannique. Il a réussi à se distinguer grâce à son travail très stylisé et reconnaissable qui consiste à réduire l’image à l’essentiel en utilisant une technique de son temps : l’outil informatique.
For the past two decades Julian Opie has been a prominent figure of the British contemporary art scene. He distinguished himself with his highly stylized and recognizable work, which is predicated on the reduction of an image to its bare minimum. To achieve this, he uses a technique from his era: the computer technology.
Il scanne des images à partir de photographies et courts métrages qu’il réalise lui-même puis, grâce à un logiciel, produit des œuvres aux épais contours noirs et larges aplats de couleurs vives avec un minimum de détail. Ce même procédé est aussi utilisé pour la création d’œuvres animées et de sculptures. Les nouvelles technologies lui permettent aussi de travailler sur le mouvement, qu’il décompose à la manière du célèbre photographe Eadweard Muybridge.
He scans images from photographs and short movies that he makes. He then uses a special software program to produce artworks with thick black outlines, flat areas of colours and minimalized detail. This technique is also applied to create animated pieces and sculptures. These new technologies enable him to work on movement, which he breaks down like the famous British photographer Eadweard Muybridge.
Cependant, ce maître du « computerized art » est aussi un très bon dessinateur. Julian Opie est né en 1958 à Londres d’une mère institutrice et d’un père économiste et a grandi à Oxford. Dès son plus jeune âge, il dessine et peint sans cesse sur des toiles qu’il tend luimême. Encouragé par ses parents à poursuivre une carrière artistique, il entre à la Chelsea School of Art puis au Goldsmiths College of Art et en sort diplômé en 1982. Son talent est très vite apprécié et dès 1983, il réalise une exposition en solo à la galerie Lisson à Londres. Dès lors, les expositions s’enchaînent dans des galeries et lieux publics du monde entier. Il devient reconnu du grand public en 2000 lorsqu’il réalise la pochette pour l’album Best Of Blur dont ses portraits des musiciens sont sur tous les bus et panneaux d’affichage de Londres ainsi qu’à la National Portrait Gallery. Puis, lors de la tournée Vertigo World Tour du groupe rock irlandais U2, il crée des visuels de personnages en marche projetés sur les écrans géants de la scène. Julian Opie crée un monde de pictogrammes compris par tous et joue avec nos perceptions. Les têtes de ses personnages sont des cercles vides rattachés à des corps sans pieds par un cou invisible. Pour ses portraits, les traits sont souvent réduits à l’essentiel : deux disques noirs pour les yeux et de simples traits pour la bouche et les sourcils. Le spectateur est invité à voir ce qui ne se voit pas, à percevoir et à comprendre non pas la réalité elle-même mais la façon dont il se la représente selon ses humeurs ou étapes de sa vie. Julian Opie nous incite à travailler nos propres interprétations, pensées et sentiments. Son esthétique minimaliste s’impose au spectateur comme une porte de sortie des artifices de la réalité, de la complexité du quotidien. Débarrassées du superflu, les représentations du monde de Opie redeviennent pures et simples. La magie de son œuvre, c’est la liberté et le sentiment de légèreté qu’elle nous procure. Rien n’est figé, à nous de voir ce qu’on a envie de voir, d’imaginer ce qui se cache derrière ces silhouettes épurées et parfois de nous identifier. Monique, Caterina, Maria, Ed, Fabrice, dansant, marchant, au musée, à la maison, c’est nous. C’est là que réside toute la beauté de l’œuvre de Julian Opie, dans sa simplicité. Gilles Dyan Président

This master of “computerized art” is actually very good at drawing. Julian Opie was born in 1958 in London, the son of a schoolteacher mother and an economist father, he grew up in Oxford. From an early age he draws and paints non-stop on canvasses that he stretches himself. He is encouraged by his parents to follow an artistic career and he attends the Chelsea School of Art and then the Goldsmiths College of Art from which he graduates in 1982. His talent is noticed right away and in 1983, he has his first solo show at the Lisson Gallery in London. Exhibitions in private and public venues worldwide follow on. His art is brought to the public eye in 2000 when he is asked to design the cover for the British band, Blur’s Best Of album. His portraits of the musicians are displayed all over London on busses and billboards as well as at the National Portrait Gallery. In 2006, he creates, for the Irish rock group U2’s Vertigo world tour, giant LED screens showing an aimless man figure walking which are displayed on the stage. Julian Opie creates a world of pictograms understandable by everyone and plays with our self-perception. The heads of his characters are empty circles attached to feetless bodies by an invisible neck. In his portraiture, the features are often reduced to their mere basics: two black discs for the eyes and simple black lines for the mouth and eyebrows. The viewer is invited to see what is invisible to the eye, to sense and understand not the true reality but the way he experiences it depending on his mood or stage in life. Julian Opie urges us to reflect on our own interpretations, feelings and thoughts. His minimalist aesthetic is an escapist road away from the effects of reality or the complexity of everyday life. Cleared from the unessential, Opie’s world’s depictions become pure and simple.The magic in his work is the feeling of freedom and lightness it brings us. Nothing is set, we can see what we want to see, imagine what hides behind those uncluttered figures and sometimes identify ourselves. Artiste de la démesure, David Mach s’est tout d’abord fait remarquer par le public dans les années 1980 grâce à ses installations colossales faites de surplus de produits manufacturés, comme Polaris, sous-marin grandeur nature réalisé à Londres avec 6000 pneus de récupération, la réplique d’une Rolls-Royce faite de 1500 vieux livres, ou encore les 50 tonnes de magazines empilés pour former cinq colonnes classiques paraissant soutenir le toit du Brooklyn Museum. Il s’est distingué pour avoir exploité l’esthétique et la prolifération d’objets du quotidien et les avoir fait entrer dans le cénacle de l’art tout en dénonçant avec humour et ironie la consommation à outrance.
Often considered as the artist of immoderation, David Mach caught the public eye in the 1980’s with his colossal installations made out of manufactured products such as Polaris, a life-size replica of a submarine made out of 6000 piled car tyres, the accurate copy of a Rolls-Royce made out of 1500 old books or the 50 tons of piled magazines forming five massive classical columns positioned to appear to be holding the roof of the Brooklyn Museum. He is known for taking advantage of the aesthetics and the proliferation of every day materials and for introducing them into the inner circle of art, exposing the abuse of the consumer society with humour and irony.

David Mach is a Scottish artist who was born in 1956 in Methil and who now works and lives in London. He studied at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and then at the Royal College of Art in London, from which he graduated in 1982. In 1992, he was nominated for the prestigious Turner Pize at the Tate Gallery in London.
Les œuvres de David Mach font aujourd’hui partie des plus prestigieuses collections publiques (The British Council de Londres ou la Tate Gallery de Londres) et privées. Il a réalisé de nombreuses commandes publiques telles un train en briques le long d’une autoroute anglaise ou Out of Order, une série de cabines téléphoniques grandeur nature tombant les unes sur les autres dans une ville de la banlieue londonienne.
The works of David Mach are part of the most prestigious private and public collections such as The British Council of London or the Tate. He has produced some permanent public works, such as a brick train along an English highway or Out of Order, a series of life size telephone booths appearing to fall on each other, exhibited in a town just outside of London.
Parallèlement à ses réalisations monumentales, David Mach manie avec énormément de talent des matériaux plus délicats tels que les allumettes, les cintres métalliques ou les cartes postales ou de jeu. Ainsi, il crée, par exemple, des masques et bustes en allumettes, des animaux en cintres ou des collages de cartes postales qui reprennent ce principe d’une même carte juxtaposée des centaines de fois afin de créer une toute autre image. Il s’empare d’objets du quotidien, appréhensibles par tous, puis les métamorphose en chefsd’œuvre spectaculaires. In addition to his colossal art pieces, David Mach handles with remarkable talent much more delicate materials such as matchsticks, coat hangers, postcards or playing cards to assemble smaller-scale masterpieces. He creates for example masks and busts made out of matchsticks, animals made out of coat hangers or postcards collage pieces. He uses hundreds of the same postcard to produce a totally new image. He deliberately seizes common and plain materials to create spectacular pieces of art. He manages to bring out the beauty of everyday life, transforming the ordinary in extraordinary.
David Mach crée des œuvres qui jouent sur l’illusion et invite le spectateur à regarder audelà des apparences. Il le détourne de la réalité pour qu’il change de regard sur les choses qui l’entourent. Il opère une transfiguration du banal, arrache l’objet industriel à sa fonction utilitaire et tel un magicien le transforme en œuvre d’art spectaculaire. « Je suis accro à la répétition, mais je préfère encore plus l’exagération. David Mach creates art pieces that play with our illusions and pushes the viewer to look beyond appearances. He takes him away from reality so he can take a fresh look on his surroundings. He alters the trivial, diverts the industrial object from its function and just like a magician, he transforms it into a stunning masterpiece. “I am addicted to repetition but I like exaggeration even better.
