오페라 갤러리 서울이 벌써 5주년을 맞았습니다.

Five years have already passed since Opera Gallery Seoul was inaugurated.

매년 개관일을 맞으며 크고 작은 행사를 정성껏 준비했지만 올해는 특별히 갤러리가 더 큰 공간으로 이전하여 갖는 뜻 깊은 기념일이 되었습니다. 그 동안 오페라 갤러리는 친근한 갤러리의 모습으로, 서울 시민과 그림을 통해 소통해 왔습니다.

Here in Seoul we have prepared various events for the opening ceremony of each year, but this year’s is particularly meaningful as the gallery has moved to a bigger and better space. Opera Gallery has continuously communicated with the Seoul citizens through its paintings while continuing to foster their close relations with them.

2012년 11월, 오페라 갤러리는 개관 5주년을 축하하며 한국특별전시‘Collection’展을 선보입니다. 이 전시는 국내에서 쉽게 접할 수 없는 독특하고 이국적인 작품 세계를 가진 오페라갤러리의 주요 작가들뿐만 아니라 세계적으 로 명성을 얻고 있는 유명 아티스트들의 작품, 100여 점이 소개 됩니다. 시대를 함께 호흡하며 글로벌하게 활동 중인 작가 10명의 작품들을 이 곳 서울, 도심 한 가운데서 여유롭게 감상 할 수 있는 아름다운 시간이 될 것입니다.

This November, 2012, Opera Gallery Seoul presents the exhibition ‘Collection,’ celebrating its fifth anniversary. On display are approximately 100 artworks by Opera Gallery’s main and most popular artists with worldwide reputations whose worlds are both distinctive and exotic and thus harder to meet in Korea. Through this exhibition Opera Gallery offers a truly beautiful experience to appreciate the artworks of the 10 globally renowned 10 artists, breathing and developing with the times in downtown Seoul.

개관 5주년을 맞으며 오페라 갤러리의 마음은 새로운 다짐으로 설렙니다. 지난 5년간 그림으로써 여러분 들에게 문화적 즐거움을 제공하고, 휴식과 위로를 드리기 위해 오페라 갤러리는 달려왔습니다. 매 년 5회 이상의 기획전시와 국내 작가 발굴, 국내외 아트페어에 적극적으로 참여하는 전문 활동과 함께, 음악과 그림 이야기가 있는 다양한 프로그램을 제공하고 어린이들에게 미술의 꿈을 심어주는 캠페인 등의 여러 활동을 통해 서울의 문화 랜드마크로 자리매김 해 나가고 있습니다. 여러분께 한 걸음 더, 가까이 가겠습니다. 많이 사랑해 주시고 격려해 주십시오. 진심으로 감사합니다.

On this special occasion, we’re garnering a new vision. We have strived to offer artistic pleasure, relaxation, and solace through the artworks for the last five years. Opera Gallery Seoul has become a cultural landmark in Seoul, through its wide variety of activities; such as holding feature exhibitions over five times a year, discovering domestic, home-grown talent subsequently previewed at Opera Gallery Seoul, active participation in art fairs at home and abroad, offering various programs spiced up with music and painting, participating in and campaigns such as, giving the dream of Art to children. Robert Indiana

(Indiana, 1928)

1928년 미국 인디애나 주 뉴 캐슬에서 태어난 로버트 인디애나는 1954년 뉴욕으로 건너가 실존주의와 어우러진 상업예술 속에 독특한 이미지를 그려 넣으면서 점차적으로‘조각적인 시’라고도 표현되는 오늘날의 인디애나 작품 세계를 형성시켰다. 1962년 엘리너 워드의 스테이블 갤러리에서 인디애나의 첫번째 뉴욕개인전 개최되었고, 1996년 스테이블 갤러리의 일환으로‘Love’의 세리그라프와 실크스크린 판화가 처음 인쇄되었다. 현재 인디애나의 작품들은 뉴욕 현대미술관, 휘트니 미술관, 메트로폴리탄 미술관을 포함 세계 유수의 미술관 컬렉션에 포함되어 있다.

Robert Indiana was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana. He moved to New York City in 1954 and joined the pop art movement. His style uses distinctive imagery, drawing on commercial art approaches blended with existentialism that gradually moved toward what Indiana calls ‘sculptural poems.’ In 1962, Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery hosted Robert Indiana’s first New York solo exhibition. The first serigraph/silkscreen of ‘Love’ was printed as part of an exhibition poster for Stable Gallery in 1966. He has since enjoyed solo exhibitions at over 30 museums and galleries worldwide. Indiana’s works are held in the permanent collections of numerous prominent museums, including Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, The Netherlands; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Brandeis Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts; Albright-Knox Gallery of Art, Buffalo, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C Institute of Contemporary Art.

Damien Hirst

(England, 1965)

1965년 영국 브리스톨 출생으로, 현존하는 최고의 현대미술 작가 중 한 명이다. 1988년 골드스미스 대학 재학 시, 주위의 작가들을 모아 프리즈(Freeze)라는 전시로 YBA(Young British Artists)의 시작을 알렸으며, 1991년 첫 개인전의 성공을 계기로 영국을 대표하는 현대미술 작가로 자리매김하게 된다. 그는 지속적으로 죽음에 관한 철학적 성찰을 주제로 한 작품을 선보여오고 있으며, <자연사 연작 The Natural History Series>, <나비 Butterflies>, <닷 페인팅 Dot Painting>, <신의 사랑을 위하여 For the Love of God>시리즈 등의 작품들을 전개하면서 전세계 의 현대미술계의 센세이션을 일으켜왔다.

Born in Bristol, England in 1965, Damien Hirst is one of today’s leading contemporary artists. A pioneer member of YBA (Young British Artists), Hirst initiated the group exhibition ‘Freeze’ with friends while attending Goldsmith College in 1988. Thanks to the success of his first solo exhibition in 1991, Hirst became one of Britain’s top contemporary artists. Since then, he has subjected ‘Death’ to philosophical introspection in a series entitled The Natural History Series. His other works include Butterflies, Dot Painting and For the Love of God. Hirst’s sensational works have been exhibited around the workd. Damien Hirst currently lives and works in London.

Marc Quinn

(England, 1964)

인간의 삶과 죽음, 그리고 신체의 변형성에 대해 작업을 하는 마크 퀸 은 1964년 영국 런던에서 태어나 캠브리지 대학에서 미술사를 전공했다. 그는 1991년 저명한 컬렉터‘찰스 사치’의 주도로 왕립아카데미에서 열린‘센세이션’전에서 자신의 4.5리터 혈액을 뽑아 자신의 두상 모양으 로 만든 작품으로 이슈화 되었으며, 이후 YBA(Young British Artists)의 대표작가로 떠올랐다.

Born in London, in 1964, Marc Quinn majored in Art History at Cambridge University. His art focuses on dichotomies such as life and death, as well as on the transformation of human body. In 1991, Quinn produced a sculpture that contained 4.5 liters of his own frozen blood (Self). Quinn’s work was part of the famous contemporary art collector Charles Saatchi’s ‘Sensation’ exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts. He is a member of the Young British Artists.

David Mach

(Scotland, 1956)

1956년 스코틀랜드 메틸(Methil)에서 태어난 데이비드 마크는 1974년에 던컨 오브 조단스톤 아트 칼리지(The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art)에 입학해 여러 아이디어와 테크닉들을 실험하며 그것들을 발전시 켜 나아갔고, 졸업 후 런던왕립예술학교에서 석사학위를 받았다. 1988년 터너 프라이즈상 후보에 오르기도 한 그는, 1998년 런던왕립예술학교의 선임 연구원을 거쳐 조각과 교수로 부임한 후 현재도 영국 런던에 거주하 며 활발한 작품 활동을 하고 있다.

Born in 1956 in Methil, Scotland, David Mach began attending the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1974 wherehe experimented with several different techniques. Mach continued to develop these methods long after his graduation. After graduating he received his Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, located in London. In 1988, he was nominated for the Turner Prize, and in 1998 he was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts. He currently lives in London, actively partakes in the educative art world, as well as continuing to work on new projects.

Antonio Seguí

(Argentina, 1934)

1934년에 태어난 아르헨티나 작가 안토니오 세귀는 마드리드 산페르 난도 왕립 미술 아카데미와 파리 에꼴 데 보자르에서 회화와 조각을 공부했다. 그 후 아르헨티나로 돌아가 잡지사 오리엔테이션에서 에디터로 활동하였고, 1957년 아르헨티나에서 첫 개인전을 가졌다. 1963년부터 오늘날까지 세귀는 파리에서 거주하며 작업하고 있으며, 많은 개인전과 그룹전에 참여하고 있다. 세귀의 작품은 대개 사회 풍자적이고 비판적인 메시지를 담고 있으며 도시를 배경으로한 우스꽝스러운 캐틱터들을 등장 시켜 낯선 이야기들을 풀어내고 있다. 그의 작품들은 전세계적으로 전시 되고 있으며, 많은 컬렉터들이 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다.

Born in 1934, Argentine painter Antonio Seguí studied painting and sculpture at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After his return to Argentina, he became a member of the editorial staff of the journal Orientación. In 1957 the artist had his first single exhibition of his paintings in Argentina. In 1961 he returned to his home country, and moved to Paris in 1963, where he lives and works today. Seguí participated in several group and individual painting exhibitions. His paintings are generally satirical, or humorous critiques of society that depict grotesque characters playing out strange stories in an urban setting. His paintings have been exhibited and collected internationally.

Mr. Brainwash

(France, 1966)

본명은 티에리 구에타로, 1966년 프랑스 출생이나, 미국으로 이주한 후, 미스터 브레인워시 라는 작가명으로 활동 중이다. 2008년 LA에서 열린 첫 개인전‘Life is Beautiful’전에는 미술계의 이슈를 불러 일으키며 전시 오프닝에는무려 7천 여명의 관객이 몰렸으며, LA 미디어 대부분이 전면을 할애하여 소개하기도 하였다. 2010년 뉴욕에서 열린 그의 두 번 째 전시인‘Icons’전은 그의 기량을 마음껏 보여준 전시로 1400m2의 버 려진 넓은 창고를 활용하여 500호에 달하는 대형 작품들을 선보이며‘꼭 봐야 하는 전시’로 꼽히기도 하였다. 이 두 전시가 대성공을 거두며 전세계 미술애호가들의 주목을 받게 되었고 미스터 브레인워시는 다음 세기의 기대되는 예술가로 촉망 받고 있다. 또한 2009년 마돈나의 히트곡 모음 집의 앨범 커버 디자인에도 참여하기도 했다. 미국 스미소니언 미술관, LA카운티 미술관, 뉴욕현대 미술관 (MoMA), 런던의 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 미술관등의 세계 유수의 미술관에 그의 작품이 소장되어 있다.

Born in 1966 in France, Thierry Guetta began his career as an artist, working under the pseudonym ‘Mr. Brainwash’ after immigrating to the United States. Mr. Brainwash’s first solo exhibition ‘Life is Beautiful’ held in 2008, Los Angeles, caused a huge uproar in the art world, attracting as many as seven thousand viewers to the opening and filling the front pages of several Los Angeles newspapers introducing the rising star. His second exhibition ‘Icons’ held in 2010, New York fully demonstrated his talent. The exhibition took place in a 1400 m2 warehouse, displaying up to five hundred large-scale works, and was labeled as a ‘must-see exhibition’. Both of these exhibitions achieved huge success, and Mr. Brainwash was the receptor of masses of global attention from all art enthusiasts, anticipating that he would become one of the greatest artists of his century. In 2009, Mr. Brainwash was commissioned to design Madonna’s ‘Celebration’ album cover. Globally renowned art museums including the United States’ Smithsonian American Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the London’s Victoria and Albert Museum etc. all possess works by Mr. Brainwash. Gérard Rancinan

(France, 1953)

1953년 프랑스 보르도 지역에서 태어난 제라드 랑시낭은 전세계를 돌아 다니면서 역사적으로 중요한 사건들을 직접 목격하였다. 자연재앙, 전쟁, 폭동 등 인간성의 다면성과 당시 일어났던 무작위의 사건들을 마주하게 된다. 자기표현에 대한 강한 욕구는 그가 보고 겪었던 이러한 이슈들에게 집중하도록 이끌었고 제라르 랑시낭은 점점 진화하는 심미안을 통해 걸러진, 깜짝 놀랄만한 이미지를 보여주고 있다. 범국 가적으로 잘 알려진 랑시낭의 작품들은 세계 유수의 갤러리와 미술관, 아주 중요한 아트 컬렉션에서 전시 되었다. 2008년 Drouot에서 열린 Etude Million auction 에서 랑시낭은 프랑스 사진가중 가장 상위 랭크에 오른 작가 중 하나가 되었다.

Born in 1953 in Bordeaux, France, Gérard Rancinan has travelled around the world, witnessing important and historic events. The occurrences of environmental crises, war, riots etc. had allowed him to experience the many facets of humanity and its inexplicable series of random events. He uses his desire to self-express as a tool to direct people’s attention to the issues that he had personally witnessed and experienced. His works demonstrate the transformation of aesthetics, and often depict shocking images. Rancinan’s works have been exhibited in globally distinguished galleries, art museums, and important art collections over the years, as his works have gained global attention. At the Étude Millon Auction held in 2008 in Drouot, Rancinan was ranked as one of the highest artists among French photographers.

Lita Cabellut

(Spain, 1961)

1961년 바르셀로나에서 태어난 리타 카발뤼는 가난한 집시 환경에서 태어났다. 그녀의 작업들은 그녀의 불우했던 어린 시절과 깊은 연관이 있다. 태어나자 마자 부모에게 버림받고 13년 동안 길거리에서의 고아 생활 끝에 입양 된다. 그녀는 입양된 후 우연히 마드리드에 위치한 프라도 뮤지엄에서 고야, 발자크, 리베라, 그리고 렘브란트의 작품을 보게 되고 곧 매료되고 말았다. 이후 그녀는 어린 시절의 상처를 고스란 히 담아 번지고 눌린 모습으로 주변인들을 표현하였다. 리타 카발뤼는 바르셀로나의 마스누에 있는 시청사 광장에서 17살에 처음 전시를 하고 19살에 새로운 도전을 위하여 스페인에서 네덜란드로 국적을 바꾼 이후 지금까지 암스테르담에 머물고 있다. 2005년 마이에미 아트페어를 비롯 한 국제미술시장에서 크게 호평 받으며 전 세계적으로 두터운 팬 층을 확보하며 활동하고 있다.

Born into an impoverished gypsy family in 1961 in Barcelona, Lita Cabellut is known for drawing deep connections between her insecure childhood and her works. Abandoned by her parents as an infant, she lived on the streets as an orphan for 13 years until she was adopted. Later on, whilst in Madrid, she came across the Museo Nacional del Prado where she was captivated by the works of Goya, Balzac, Rivera, and Rembrandt. Afterwards, Cabellut began creating portraits of the surrounding people and expressing the pains she experienced during her childhood. At the age of 17, Cabellut launched her first exhibition in the Town Hall Square in Masnou, located in Barcelona. At 19, she changed her nationality from Spanish to Dutch to open herself up to new challenges. She has since been living and working in Amsterdam, and since her acceptance to the 2005 Miami Art Fair, she was able to obtain her rightful, world-wide acclaim and popularity for her works.

Pierre Matter

(France, 1964)

1964년 프랑스 태생인 피에르 마터의 조각에는 강렬하고 남성적인 힘과 우아함과 고상함이 가미된 기계적인 느낌이 공존한다. 작품들은 구리, 알루미늄, 철 또는 나무 등과 같이 다양한 재료로 표현되었으며, 이는 신화 속 동물과 같은 형태를 띤다. 프랑스, 독일, 스위스, 뉴욕, 홍콩, 일본, 싱가폴 등 광범위한 활동 범위와 함께, 전 세계 곳곳에서 지속적인 전시를 개최해오고 있다.

Born in 1964, in France, Pierre Matter’s sculptures combine masculine strength with mechanical elements with a touch of grace and elegance. Matter uses various mediums for his works such as copper, aluminum, steel and wood. Regardless of the materials used, Matter’s sculptures always express his desire to create. His works sometimes take the form of mythological animals. Pierre Matter has exhibited extensively in France, Germany, Switzerland, New York, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. Pierre Matter currently lives and works in Bulh, France.

Jean-François Larrieu

(France, 1960)

어린 나이에 천부적인 예술적 두각을 나타낸 장-프랑소와 라리유는 1960년 프랑스 피레네산맥 출신으로, 10대에 프랑수와 비용 회화 아카 데미(François Villon Painting Academy) 대상, 포 미술관(Musée de Pau)의 베아르네 미술관상(Musée Bearnais prix)을 수여 받으며 작가 로서 화려하게 데뷔하며 작가의 길을 걷게 된다. 1982년 이후 파리에 거주하며 활발한 활동을 벌여 왔으며, 도제식 미술교육을 수여 받은 작가로서는 드물게 자신의 실력만으로 파리 그랑팔레 예술인 협회 (Fédération des Salons du Grand Palais)공동 설립했고, 살롱 콩파 라송(Salon Comparaison)등 예술인 협회 대표를 역임했다. 라리유의 작품은 프랑스를 비롯하여 중국, 일본, 타이완, 스페인, 레바논의 미술관 전시를 통해 전세계에 알려졌으며, 공공기관과 세계적인 재단들의 컬렉 션을 비롯, 전세계에 폭넓은 개인 컬렉터 층을 형성하고 있다.

Born in the metropolitan area of the Midi-Pyrénées (France) in 1960, Jean-François Larrieu distinguished himself as a child with natural talent. He made a spectacular debut as an artist, by winning the Prize François Villon by the François Villon Painting Academy, and the Béarnais Museum Prize by the Pau Museum, in his teens. Since 1982, Larrieu has lived and worked actively in Paris. He co-founded the Grand Palais Paris Artists Association, and became President of the Salon Comparaisons through his ability and perseverance; important qualities for the artist, who received art education only through an apprenticeship. His works are part of the collections of public art museums and prestigious foundations in France, China, Japan, Taiwan, Spain and Lebanon, as well as a wide range of individual collectors around the world.
